Due to the existence of free software and pedagogical guides, the use of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) has been further democratized in recent years. Nowadays, it is quite usual for practitioners and decision makers with no or little knowledge in operational research to run their own efficiency analysis. Within DEA, several alternative models allow for an environmental adjustment. Four alternative models, each user-friendly and easily accessible to practitioners and decision makers, are performed using empirical data of 90 primary schools in the State of Geneva, Switzerland. Results show that the majority of alternative models deliver divergent results. From a political and a managerial standpoint, these diverging results could lead to potentially ineffective decisions. As no consensus emerges on the best model to use, practitioners and decision makers may be tempted to select the model that is right for them, in other words, the model that best reflects their own preferences. Further studies should investigate how an appropriate multi-criteria decision analysis method could help decision makers to select the right model.

Focal epilepsy is increasingly recognized as the result of an altered brain network, both on the structural and functional levels and the characterization of these widespread brain alterations is crucial for our understanding of the clinical manifestation of seizure and cognitive deficits as well as for the management of candidates to epilepsy surgery. Tractography based on Diffusion Tensor Imaging allows non-invasive mapping of white matter tracts in vivo. Recently, diffusion spectrum imaging (DSI), based on an increased number of diffusion directions and intensities, has improved the sensitivity of tractography, notably with respect to the problem of fiber crossing and recent developments allow acquisition times compatible with clinical application. We used DSI and parcellation of the gray matter in regions of interest to build whole-brain connectivity matrices describing the mutual connections between cortical and subcortical regions in patients with focal epilepsy and healthy controls. In addition, the high angular and radial resolution of DSI allowed us to evaluate also some of the biophysical compartment models, to better understand the cause of the changes in diffusion anisotropy. Global connectivity, hub architecture and regional connectivity patterns were altered in TLE patients and showed different characteristics in RTLE vs LTLE with stronger abnormalities in RTLE. The microstructural analysis suggested that disturbed axonal density contributed more than fiber orientation to the connectivity changes affecting the temporal lobes whereas fiber orientation changes were more involved in extratemporal lobe changes. Our study provides further structural evidence that RTLE and LTLE are not symmetrical entities and DSI-based imaging could help investigate the microstructural correlate of these imaging abnormalities.

Classical Monte Carlo simulations were carried out on the NPT ensemble at 25°C and 1 atm, aiming to investigate the ability of the TIP4P water model [Jorgensen, Chandrasekhar, Madura, Impey and Klein; J. Chem. Phys., 79 (1983) 926] to reproduce the newest structural picture of liquid water. The results were compared with recent neutron diffraction data [Soper; Bruni and Ricci; J. Chem. Phys., 106 (1997) 247]. The influence of the computational conditions on the thermodynamic and structural results obtained with this model was also analyzed. The findings were compared with the original ones from Jorgensen et al [above-cited reference plus Mol. Phys., 56 (1985) 1381]. It is notice that the thermodynamic results are dependent on the boundary conditions used, whereas the usual radial distribution functions g(O/O(r)) and g(O/H(r)) do not depend on them.

This paper re-examines the null of stationary of real exchange rate for a panel of seventeen OECD developed countries during the post-Bretton Woods era. Our analysis simultaneously considers both the presence of cross-section dependence and multiple structural breaks that have not received much attention in previous panel methods of long-run PPP. Empirical results indicate that there is little evidence in favor of PPP hypothesis when the analysis does not account for structural breaks. This conclusion is reversed when structural breaks are considered in computation of the panel statistics. We also compute point estimates of half-life separately for idiosyncratic and common factor components and find that it is always below one year.

In this article, the results of a modified SERVQUAL questionnaire (Parasuraman et al., 1991) are reported. The modifications consisted in substituting questionnaire items particularly suited to a specific service (banking) and context (county of Girona, Spain) for the original rather general and abstract items. These modifications led to more interpretable factors which accounted for a higher percentage of item variance. The data were submitted to various structural equation models which made it possible to conclude that the questionnaire contains items with a high measurement quality with respect to five identified dimensions of service quality which differ from those specified by Parasuraman et al. And are specific to the banking service. The two dimensions relating to the behaviour of employees have the greatest predictive power on overall quality and satisfaction ratings, which enables managers to use a low-cost reduced version of the questionnaire to monitor quality on a regular basis. It was also found that satisfaction and overall quality were perfectly correlated thus showing that customers do not perceive these concepts as being distinct

A damage model for the simulation of delamination propagation under high-cycle fatigue loading is proposed. The basis for the formulation is a cohesive law that links fracture and damage mechanics to establish the evolution of the damage variable in terms of the crack growth rate dA/dN. The damage state is obtained as a function of the loading conditions as well as the experimentally-determined coefficients of the Paris Law crack propagation rates for the material. It is shown that by using the constitutive fatigue damage model in a structural analysis, experimental results can be reproduced without the need of additional model-specific curve-fitting parameters

Over 50 years, several scientists and industries have developed new alternatives for wastewater treatment and remediation. Recently, electrochemical technology has been largely developed mainly because of its versatility and environmental compatibility. Scientific contributions about role of the electrode material have allowed determining that the influence of material in the selectivity is an important parameter. However, to interpret this behavior, comprehensive physical chemistry models for organics destruction, related to electrochemical phenomena and material surfaces, were proposed in the last decades. So, this paper presents a critical and comprehensive review about the principles and recent mechanism advances in electrocatalysis for wastewater treatment.

In the power market, electricity prices play an important role at the economic level. The behavior of a price trend usually known as a structural break may change over time in terms of its mean value, its volatility, or it may change for a period of time before reverting back to its original behavior or switching to another style of behavior, and the latter is typically termed a regime shift or regime switch. Our task in this thesis is to develop an electricity price time series model that captures fat tailed distributions which can explain this behavior and analyze it for better understanding. For NordPool data used, the obtained Markov Regime-Switching model operates on two regimes: regular and non-regular. Three criteria have been considered price difference criterion, capacity/flow difference criterion and spikes in Finland criterion. The suitability of GARCH modeling to simulate multi-regime modeling is also studied.

Asian rust of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merril] is one of the most important fungal diseases of this crop worldwide. The recent introduction of Phakopsora pachyrhizi Syd. & P. Syd in the Americas represents a major threat to soybean production in the main growing regions, and significant losses have already been reported. P. pachyrhizi is extremely aggressive under favorable weather conditions, causing rapid plant defoliation. Epidemiological studies, under both controlled and natural environmental conditions, have been done for several decades with the aim of elucidating factors that affect the disease cycle as a basis for disease modeling. The recent spread of Asian soybean rust to major production regions in the world has promoted new development, testing and application of mathematical models to assess the risk and predict the disease. These efforts have included the integration of new data, epidemiological knowledge, statistical methods, and advances in computer simulation to develop models and systems with different spatial and temporal scales, objectives and audience. In this review, we present a comprehensive discussion on the models and systems that have been tested to predict and assess the risk of Asian soybean rust. Limitations, uncertainties and challenges for modelers are also discussed.

Preference relations, and their modeling, have played a crucial role in both social sciences and applied mathematics. A special category of preference relations is represented by cardinal preference relations, which are nothing other than relations which can also take into account the degree of relation. Preference relations play a pivotal role in most of multi criteria decision making methods and in the operational research. This thesis aims at showing some recent advances in their methodology. Actually, there are a number of open issues in this field and the contributions presented in this thesis can be grouped accordingly. The first issue regards the estimation of a weight vector given a preference relation. A new and efficient algorithm for estimating the priority vector of a reciprocal relation, i.e. a special type of preference relation, is going to be presented. The same section contains the proof that twenty methods already proposed in literature lead to unsatisfactory results as they employ a conflicting constraint in their optimization model. The second area of interest concerns consistency evaluation and it is possibly the kernel of the thesis. This thesis contains the proofs that some indices are equivalent and that therefore, some seemingly different formulae, end up leading to the very same result. Moreover, some numerical simulations are presented. The section ends with some consideration of a new method for fairly evaluating consistency. The third matter regards incomplete relations and how to estimate missing comparisons. This section reports a numerical study of the methods already proposed in literature and analyzes their behavior in different situations. The fourth, and last, topic, proposes a way to deal with group decision making by means of connecting preference relations with social network analysis.

Julkisen sektorin itsensä synnyttämien innovaatioiden ja innovoinnin näkökulma on verrattain tuore innovaatiotutkimuksen tutkimuskohde. Vielä uudempaa lähestymistapaa edustaa käyttäjälähtöinen ja käyttäjää osallistava palveluinnovaatiotutkimus julkisella sektorilla. Käyttäjälähtöisen ja käyttäjää osallistavan palveluinnovoinnin lähestymistavan toteuttamisesta ollaan kiinnostuneita, mutta tieteelliseen tutkimukseen perustuva tieto lähestymistavasta on vielä kohtuullisen niukkaa. Tämän käyttäjälähtöiseen palvelujen innovointiin keskittyvän väitöskirjatutkimuksen päätavoitteena on mikrotasolla tunnistaa ja ryhmitellä käyttäjää osallistavan palveluinnovoinnin lähestymistavan toteuttamisen haasteita julkisella sektorilla. Väitöskirjatutkimuksen alatavoitteena on tutkimuksesta saatavan tiedon avulla muodostaa kysymyslista tukemaan lähestymistavan käyttöönottamista ja toteuttamista julkisen sektorin palveluorganisaatioissa ja -verkostoissa. Julkisen palvelusektorin ohella väitöskirjan tutkimustuloksia voivat soveltuvin osin hyödyntää myös yksityisen ja kolmannen sektorin palveluorganisaatiot ja -verkostot sekä käyttäjälähtöisen innovaatiopolitiikan suunnitteluun ja sen jalkauttamiseen osallistuvat tahot. Haasteita lähestytään tutkimuksessa käyttäjälähtöisen ja käyttäjää osallistavan palveluinnovoinnin lähestymistavan piirteiden kautta ja haasteita tarkastellaan kehittäjäviranomaisten (ryhmätaso) näkökulmasta. Kuntasektori on valittu tutkimukseen edustamaan julkista sektoria. Lähestymistavan piirteiksi tutkimuksessa määritellään käyttäjänäkökulman ohjaava rooli organisaation innovaatiotoiminnan strategisella tasolla ja palvelujen uudistamisprosessien tasoilla, avoimuus (erityisesti käyttäjärajapinta) ja tulkinnallisuus innovaatioprosessien varhaisessa vaiheessa sekä laaja-alainen käsitys innovaatioiden lähteistä käyttäjänäkökulmaa muodostettaessa. Tutkimuksen kohteena on hyvinvointipalveluinnovaatioprosessien varhainen vaihe, jolloin keskeisessä asemassa on uusien ideoiden sekä uuden tiedon ja ymmärryksen hankinta hyödynnettäväksi innovaatioprosessien seuraavissa vaiheissa. Tutkimuksessa rajaudutaan käyttäjälähtöisen palveluinnovoinnin muotoon, jossa käyttäjät intentionaalisesti ja konkreettisesti osallistetaan kehittäjäviranomaisjohtoisiin palveluinnovaatioprosesseihin. Käyttäjiksi tutkimuksessa ymmärretään palvelun loppukäyttäjät palvelujen ”ulkoisina hyödyntäjinä” ja yli sektorialisten palveluprosessien henkilöstö palvelujen ”sisäisinä hyödyntäjinä”. Hyvinvointipalveluista tutkimuksessa ovat edustettuina sosiaali- ja terveyspalvelut sekä ikäihmisten palvelukeskusten tarjoamat palvelut. Kuntasektorin innovaatiotoiminnan kenttä ymmärretään tutkimuksessa verkostomaisena kokonaisuutena, joka ylittää kuntien hallinnolliset rajat. Artikkeliväitöskirjana toteutetun väitöskirjatutkimuksen metodologia perustuu usean tapauksen tapaustutkimukseen (multiple case-studies) ja kvalitatiiviseen tutkimusotteeseen. Työn empiirinen osuus koostuu viidestä artikkelina julkaistusta osatutkimuksesta. Osatutkimuksissa käytetään tapaustutkimuksen eri variaatioita, ja tutkimusaineistot on kerätty kolmesta eri perustutkimusympäristöstä. Osatutkimuksien tapaukset on valittu palvelun käyttäjien ”äänen jatkumon” (the voice of the customer) eri kohdista. Käyttäjän ääntä käytetään tutkimuksessa metodisena ratkaisuna ja metaforana. Lisäksi käyttäjän ääni ymmärretään tutkimuksessa paremminkin kollektiivisena ja laajemmista palvelujen kehittämisnäkökulmista kertovana tekijänä kuin yksittäisten palvelun käyttäjien tarpeista ja toiveista kertovana metaforana. Käyttäjää osallistavan palveluinnovoinnin lähestymistavan toteuttamisen haasteiksi julkisella sektorilla tutkimuksessa tunnistetaan viisi haastetta. Tiivistetysti haasteena on 1. palvelujen käyttäjien subjektiuteen perustuva käyttäjälähtöisyys palvelujen uudistamisessa 2. tunnistaa palvelun käyttäjät innovaatiotoiminnan voimavarana ja rohkaistua heidän osallistamiseensa 3. sitoutuminen yhteistoiminnallisuuteen käyttäjä- ja muita rajapintoja ylittävissä palvelujen uudistamisprosesseissa ja innovaatiohakuisuus työskentelyssä 4. oivaltaa palvelutoivelistoja ja asiakaspalautteita laajempia kehittämisnäkökulmia 5. synnyttää luottamukseen perustuva hyvä kierre palvelun käyttäjien ja kehittäjien välille. Tutkimustuloksena syntyneet haasteet paikannetaan tutkimuksessa käyttäjän äänen jatkumolle erilaisin painotuksin. Lisäksi tutkimustulosten pohjalta tehdään kolme keskeistä johtopäätöstä. Ensinnäkin palvelun kehittäjätahon sekä palvelun loppukäyttäjien ja palvelujen sisäisten hyödyntäjien väliltä on tunnistettavissa innovaatiopotentiaalia sisältäviä rakenteellisia aukkoja. Toiseksi kehittäjäviranomaistahon valmius ja halu laajentaa tiedonmuodostustaan palvelujen uudistamisessa palvelun käyttäjien kanssa yhteisöllisen tiedonmuodostuksen suuntaan on puutteellinen. Kolmanneksi palvelujen kehittäjätaho ei ole sisäistänyt riittävässä määrin käyttäjää osallistavan palveluinnovoinnin lähestymistavan metodologisia perusajatuksia. Tutkimuksessa tunnistetut viisi haastetta osoittavat, että käyttäjää osallistavan palveluinnovoinnin lähestymistavan käyttöönotto hyvinvointipalveluorganisaation tai -verkoston palvelujen innovoinnin lähestymistavaksi ei ole mekaaninen toimenpide. Lähestymistavan käyttöönottoa tukeva kysymyslista perustuu tutkimuksessa tunnistettuihin haasteisiin. Kysymyslista on laadittu siten, että kysymykset liittyvät laajasti julkisten palveluorganisaatioiden ja -verkostojen innovaatiokulttuuriin. Kaksiosaisen kysymyslistan ensimmäisen osan kysymykset käsittelevät innovointia ohjaavia mentaalisia malleja. Ensimmäisessä osassa esitetään esimerkiksi seuraava kysymys: ”Millaista käsitystäpalvelun käyttäjistä (kuntalaisista) sekä käyttäjien ja kehittäjien (viranomaisten) välisestä suhteesta ilmennämme palvelujen innovoinnissa; onko palvelujen käyttäjä (kuntalainen) kohde, jolle kehitetään palveluja, vai onko hän jopa välttämätön kehittämiskumppani?”. Kysymyslistan toisen osan kysymykset liittyvät innovaatiokäytänteisiin ja valmiuksiin. Esimerkkinä voidaan mainita seuraava kaksiosainen kysymys: ”Tukevatko innovaatiokäytänteemme käyttäjärajapinnan ylittäviä innovaatioprosesseja ja sitoudummeko avoimin mielin työskentelyyn palvelun käyttäjien, potentiaalisten käyttäjien tai ei-käyttäjien kanssa? Mitä hyötyjä koemme yhteistoiminnallisuudesta koituvan meille ja käyttäjille sekä innovaation laatuominaisuuksiin?”. Mitä tulee tutkimuksen otsikon alkuosaan ”kuulla vai kuunnella”, vastaus on, että pääpaino on sanalla ”kuulla”. Pohdintaluvussa tuodaan myös esille tarve – tai ainakin kriittisen tarkastelun tarve – käyttäjälähtöisen ja käyttäjää osallistavan palveluinnovoinnin käsitteen ja sen luonteen sekä tavoitteiden määrittelemiselle julkisen sektorin ominaispiirteistä käsin vastapainona alkuperältään yksityisen sektorin liiketoimintakontekstista lähtöisin oleville määrittelyille.

Currently, the standards that deal with the determination of the properties of rigidity and strength for structural round timber elements do not take in consideration in their calculations and mathematical models the influence of the existing irregularities in the geometry of these elements. This study has as objective to determine the effective value of the modulus of longitudinal elasticity for structural round timber pieces of the Eucalyptus citriodora genus by a technique of optimization allied to the Inverse Analysis Method, to the Finite Element Method and the Least Square Method.

Modern machine structures are often fabricated by welding. From a fatigue point of view, the structural details and especially, the welded details are the most prone to fatigue damage and failure. Design against fatigue requires information on the fatigue resistance of a structure’s critical details and the stress loads that act on each detail. Even though, dynamic simulation of flexible bodies is already current method for analyzing structures, obtaining the stress history of a structural detail during dynamic simulation is a challenging task; especially when the detail has a complex geometry. In particular, analyzing the stress history of every structural detail within a single finite element model can be overwhelming since the amount of nodal degrees of freedom needed in the model may require an impractical amount of computational effort. The purpose of computer simulation is to reduce amount of prototypes and speed up the product development process. Also, to take operator influence into account, real time models, i.e. simplified and computationally efficient models are required. This in turn, requires stress computation to be efficient if it will be performed during dynamic simulation. The research looks back at the theoretical background of multibody dynamic simulation and finite element method to find suitable parts to form a new approach for efficient stress calculation. This study proposes that, the problem of stress calculation during dynamic simulation can be greatly simplified by using a combination of floating frame of reference formulation with modal superposition and a sub-modeling approach. In practice, the proposed approach can be used to efficiently generate the relevant fatigue assessment stress history for a structural detail during or after dynamic simulation. In this work numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the proposed approach in practice. The results show that approach is applicable and can be used as proposed.

In this work mathematical programming models for structural and operational optimisation of energy systems are developed and applied to a selection of energy technology problems. The studied cases are taken from industrial processes and from large regional energy distribution systems. The models are based on Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP), Mixed Integer Non-Linear Programming (MINLP) and on a hybrid approach of a combination of Non-Linear Programming (NLP) and Genetic Algorithms (GA). The optimisation of the structure and operation of energy systems in urban regions is treated in the work. Firstly, distributed energy systems (DES) with different energy conversion units and annual variations of consumer heating and electricity demands are considered. Secondly, district cooling systems (DCS) with cooling demands for a large number of consumers are studied, with respect to a long term planning perspective regarding to given predictions of the consumer cooling demand development in a region. The work comprises also the development of applications for heat recovery systems (HRS), where paper machine dryer section HRS is taken as an illustrative example. The heat sources in these systems are moist air streams. Models are developed for different types of equipment price functions. The approach is based on partitioning of the overall temperature range of the system into a number of temperature intervals in order to take into account the strong nonlinearities due to condensation in the heat recovery exchangers. The influence of parameter variations on the solutions of heat recovery systems is analysed firstly by varying cost factors and secondly by varying process parameters. Point-optimal solutions by a fixed parameter approach are compared to robust solutions with given parameter variation ranges. In the work enhanced utilisation of excess heat in heat recovery systems with impingement drying, electricity generation with low grade excess heat and the use of absorption heat transformers to elevate a stream temperature above the excess heat temperature are also studied.

This Thesis discusses the phenomenology of the dynamics of open quantum systems marked by non-Markovian memory effects. Non-Markovian open quantum systems are the focal point of a flurry of recent research aiming to answer, e.g., the following questions: What is the characteristic trait of non-Markovian dynamical processes that discriminates it from forgetful Markovian dynamics? What is the microscopic origin of memory in quantum dynamics, and how can it be controlled? Does the existence of memory effects open new avenues and enable accomplishments that cannot be achieved with Markovian processes? These questions are addressed in the publications forming the core of this Thesis with case studies of both prototypical and more exotic models of open quantum systems. In the first part of the Thesis several ways of characterizing and quantifying non-Markovian phenomena are introduced. Their differences are then explored using a driven, dissipative qubit model. The second part of the Thesis focuses on the dynamics of a purely dephasing qubit model, which is used to unveil the origin of non-Markovianity for a wide class of dynamical models. The emergence of memory is shown to be strongly intertwined with the structure of the spectral density function, as further demonstrated in a physical realization of the dephasing model using ultracold quantum gases. Finally, as an application of memory effects, it is shown that non- Markovian dynamical processes facilitate a novel phenomenon of timeinvariant discord, where the total quantum correlations of a system are frozen to their initial value. Non-Markovianity can also be exploited in the detection of phase transitions using quantum information probes, as shown using the physically interesting models of the Ising chain in a transverse field and a Coulomb chain undergoing a structural phase transition.
