La recerca s'ha desenvolupat a través d'un estudi que ha interrelacionat el procés d'integració social i cultural de la comunitat marroquina en la societat d'assentament amb la integració escolar dels infants i joves en els centres d'educació obligatòria. El que suposa una anàlisi del paper integrador que l'escola desenvolupa i pot desenvolupar, i també una reflexió sobre la interculturalitat i l' educació intercultural com a posicionament que afavoreix la integració plural. Tot aquest treball s'ha desenvolupat des d' una perspectiva articulada, ja que permet una major comprensió del fet migratori que es viu a una i altra banda de la Mediterrània. La investigació s 'ha desenvolupat en un paradigma sociocrític i a través d'un procés etnogràfic (observació, relats de vida, entrevistes ... ) al llarg de quasi tres anys, que ha estudiat i ha analitzat des d' una perspectiva comprensiva i transformadora, com la comunitat marroquina valora l'escolarització dels infants i joves des de les concepcions d'educació i d'escola que ha construït a través: 1. El procés migratori, entenent-lo mitjançant l' emigració i la immigració, en una perspectiva articulada. 2. El procés d'integració sociocultural en la societat d'arribada. El treball realitzat ha plantejat un marc teòric de tipus interdisciplinar -que s'ha estès al llarg de la investigació- per tal de situar el procés migratori, el concepte d'integració en la societat d'avui, des d'una perspectiva habermasiana i el paper de l'educació i de l'escola des d'una posicionament comunicatiu. Un cop presentat el marc teòric s'ha estudiat el procés migratori situant-se primer en el context de partida, el Marroc, realitzant una anàlisi que s'ha desenvolupat mitjançant factors socioculturals i educatius que en aquest darrer cas s'han ubicat sobre: l'educació en l'islam i en l'actual sistema d'ensenyament nacional. Posteriorment s'ha estudiat el context d'immigració a través d'aspectes demogràfics, jurídics, socioculturals i educatius. Presentant en aquest darrers un perfil socioformatiu de l'alumnat d'origen marroquí a través d'un estudi realitzat a la província de Girona. En els últims capítols s'exposen, primer situant-se en el Rif Oriental (Marroc), la ciutat de Nador i el seu entorn, de forma mes breu, i després amb extensió sobre l'espai de les comunitats marroquines d'Angles i Palafrugell a Catalunya, localitats de les comarques gironines, les característiques del context sociocutural i escolar, com a elements sobre el quals analitzar el procés d'integració sociocultural i escolar en el context d'assentament. La recerca també ha recollit l'opinió i l'experiència dels treballadors i famílies d'origen marroquí sobre l'escolarització dels infants i joves de la comunitat marroquina i sobre les expectatives que els pares i adults tenen de l'escola corn a institució formativa i integradora. Finalment es presenta una anàlisi, partint de la inforrnació obtinguda, que interrelaciona el procés d'integració sociocultural i escolar en el país d' assentament que ha aportat els següents referents i orientacions: 1. El procés d'integració de la comunitat marroquina mostra que es dóna un replegament sobre si mateixa que dificulta la integració plural. Aquest replegament es dóna mitjançant els valors de la tradició i de l'islam que són simultàniament, elements de cultura i de control. 2. Cal analitzar la integració en funció del model d' integració dominant en la societat d'arribada que es basa sobretot en aspectes funcionals: econòmics, jurídics i productius. 3. La integració en els àmbits morals: drets i deures, i en els aspectes simbòlics: identitats i identificacions són dominats en el primer cas per l'assimilació en els aspectes socials, culturals i productius, i pels estereotips en els aspectes identitaris i d'identificació. Aquesta situació comporta la necessitat de desenvolupar un model d'integració escolar que ha de tenir corn a referent que l'escola no pot integrar ni l'alumnat pot integrar-se si viu un procés de marginació o exclusió fora del centre i si el centre educatiu no és conscient d'allò que succeeix al seu entorn i a l'alumnat més enllà del context escolar. 1- Ha de procurar la integració de l'alumnat en la xarxa relacional i formativa del centre. 2- Ha d'aconseguir la integració de l'alumnat a l'aula. 3- Ha de tenir present que les accions integradores, abans esmentades, han d'afavorir la integració de l'alumnat fora de l'espai escolar i en una perspectiva de futur, ha d' afavorir la integració sociolaboral. Per tant, l'escola ha de plantejar-se que és necessari establir un diàleg amb totes les famílies a través d'un nou model de participació en el qual l'escola passi de ser un lloc de pas a un lloc de trobada. Aquesta dinàmica també replanteja ara les actuals fronteres entre allò públic i privat, entre l'escola i la família, amb l' objectiu de descobrir les coincidències entre els projectes social, cultural i educatiu d'ambdues institucions.

Esta Tese tem como objectivo, contribuir para a construção de uma Creche e Jardim de Infância num bairro social de modo a minimizar a realidade actual, bem como a problemática nos "Bairros Sociais". Este estudo incidiu sobre o Bairro da Cova da Moura, situado no concelho da Amadora, sendo considerado um dos mais perigosos da cidade de Lisboa. O Trabalho iniciou-se com uma análise á origem do Bairro da Cova da Moura, ao seu desenvolvimento e, posteriormente aos seus habitantes a fim de, compreender as suas características e vivências. Na sequência deste trabalho, verificou-se a existência de inúmeras carências afectas ao bairro e à sua população, constatando-se que são nas camadas mais jovens, nomeadamente da infância à adolescência que incidem a maioria destas adversidades. Neste contexto, a proposta de trabalho será a concepção do Projecto de uma Creche e Jardim de Infância, apelando a uma educação mais eficaz e proveitosa, proporcionada em condições de conforto arquitectónico, tendo em conta a zona onde se insere e a população que servirá, tentando interligar o bairro e a convivência dos seus habitantes com as populações periféricas. Mediante a análise destes espaços serão mostradas algumas apreciações feitas para a concepção deste tipo de Equipamento, bem como de alguns conceitos e renovações nos mesmos referentes a questões antropológicas, ergonómicas, tipológicas, funcionais e de alguns problemas e dificuldades associados.

Since the advent of the internet in every day life in the 1990s, the barriers to producing, distributing and consuming multimedia data such as videos, music, ebooks, etc. have steadily been lowered for most computer users so that almost everyone with internet access can join the online communities who both produce, consume and of course also share media artefacts. Along with this trend, the violation of personal data privacy and copyright has increased with illegal file sharing being rampant across many online communities particularly for certain music genres and amongst the younger age groups. This has had a devastating effect on the traditional media distribution market; in most cases leaving the distribution companies and the content owner with huge financial losses. To prove that a copyright violation has occurred one can deploy fingerprinting mechanisms to uniquely identify the property. However this is currently based on only uni-modal approaches. In this paper we describe some of the design challenges and architectural approaches to multi-modal fingerprinting currently being examined for evaluation studies within a PhD research programme on optimisation of multi-modal fingerprinting architectures. Accordingly we outline the available modalities that are being integrated through this research programme which aims to establish the optimal architecture for multi-modal media security protection over the internet as the online distribution environment for both legal and illegal distribution of media products.

Studies on aging and emotion suggest an increase in reported positive affect, a processing bias of positive over negative information, as well as increasingly adaptive regulation in response to negative events with advancing age. These findings imply that older individuals evaluate information differently, resulting in lowered reactivity to, and/or faster recovery from, negative information, while maintaining more positive responding to positive information. We examined this hypothesis in an ongoing study on Midlife in the US (MIDUS II) where emotional reactivity and recovery were assessed in a large number of respondents (N = 159) from a wide age range (36–84 years). We recorded eye-blink startle magnitudes and corrugator activity during and after the presentation of positive, neutral and negative pictures. The most robust age effect was found in response to neutral stimuli, where increasing age is associated with a decreased corrugator and eyeblink startle response to neutral stimuli. These data suggest that an age-related positivity effect does not essentially alter the response to emotion-laden information, but is reflected in a more positive interpretation of affectively ambiguous information. Furthermore, older women showed reduced corrugator recovery from negative pictures relative to the younger women and men, suggesting that an age-related prioritization of well-being is not necessarily reflected in adaptive regulation of negative affect.

Investigations of memory deficits in older individuals have concentrated on their increased likelihood of forgetting events or details of events that were actually encountered (errors of omission). However mounting evidence demonstrates that normal cognitive aging also is associated with an increased propensity for errors of commission-shown in false alarms or false recognition. The present study examined the origins of this age difference. Older and younger adults each performed three types of memory tasks in which details of encountered items might influence performance. Although older adults showed greater false recognition of related lures on a standard (identical) old/new episodic recognition task, older and younger adults showed parallel effects of detail on repetition priming and meaning-based episodic recognition (decreased priming and decreased meaning-based recognition for different relative to same exemplars). The results suggest that the older adults encoded details but used them less effectively than the younger adults in the recognition context requiring their deliberate, controlled use.

In two separate studies, the cholesterol-lowering efficacy of a diet high in monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) was evaluated by means of a randomized crossover trial. In both studies subjects were randomized to receive either a high-MUFA diet or the control diet first, which they followed for a period of 8 weeks; following a washout period of 4–6 weeks they were transferred onto the opposing diet for a further period of 8 weeks. In one study subjects were healthy middle-aged men (n 30), and in the other they were young men (n 23) with a family history of CHD recruited from two centres (Guildford and Dublin). The two studies were conducted over the same time period using identical foods and study designs. Subjects consumed 38% energy as fat, with 18% energy as MUFA and 10% as saturated fatty acids (MUFA diet), or 13% energy as MUFA and 16% as saturated fatty acids (control diet). The polyunsaturated fatty acid content of each diet was 7%. The diets were achieved by providing subjects with manufactured foods such as spreads, ‘ready meals’, biscuits, puddings and breads, which, apart from their fatty acid compositions, were identical for both diets. Subjects were blind to which of the diets they were following on both arms of the study. Weight changes on the diets were less than 1 kg. In the groups combined (n 53) mean total and LDL-cholesterol levels were significantly lower at the end of the MUFA diet than the control diet by 0×29 (SD 0×61) mmol/l (P,0×001) and 0×38 (SD 0×64) mmol/l (P, 0×0001) respectively. In middle-aged men these differences were due to a mean reduction in LDL-cholesterol of ¹11 (SD 12) % on the MUFA diet with no change on the control diet (¹1×1 (SD 10) %). In young men the differences were due to an increase in LDL-cholesterol concentration on the control diet of þ6×2 (SD 13) % and a decrease on the MUFA diet of ¹7×8 (SD 20) %. Differences in the responses of middle-aged and young men to the two diets did not appear to be due to differences in their habitual baseline diets which were generally similar, but appeared to reflect the lower baseline cholesterol concentrations in the younger men. There was a moderately strong and statistically significant inverse correlation between the change in LDLcholesterol concentration on each diet and the baseline fasting LDL-cholesterol concentration (r¹0×49; P,0×0005). In conclusion, diets in which saturated fat is partially replaced by MUFA can achieve significant reductions in total and LDL-cholesterol concentrations, even when total fat and energy intakes are maintained. The dietary approach used to alter fatty acid intakes would be appropriate for achieving reductions in saturated fat intakes in whole populations.

It is widely accepted, based on data from the last few decades and on model simulations, that anthropogenic climate change will cause increased fire activity. However, less attention has been paid to the relationship between abrupt climate changes and heightened fire activity in the paleorecord. We use 35 charcoal and pollen records to assess how fire regimes in North America changed during the last glacial–interglacial transition (15 to 10 ka), a time of large and rapid climate changes. We also test the hypothesis that a comet impact initiated continental-scale wildfires at 12.9 ka; the data do not support this idea, nor are continent-wide fires indicated at any time during deglaciation. There are, however, clear links between large climate changes and fire activity. Biomass burning gradually increased from the glacial period to the beginning of the Younger Dryas. Although there are changes in biomass burning during the Younger Dryas, there is no systematic trend. There is a further increase in biomass burning after the Younger Dryas. Intervals of rapid climate change at 13.9, 13.2, and 11.7 ka are marked by large increases in fire activity. The timing of changes in fire is not coincident with changes in human population density or the timing of the extinction of the megafauna. Although these factors could have contributed to fire-regime changes at individual sites or at specific times, the charcoal data indicate an important role for climate, and particularly rapid climate change, in determining broad-scale levels of fire activity.

Abstract. The extent to which cognitive behaviour therapy can be used with children is unclear. In meta analyses older children and teenagers seem to derive greater benefit than young children. This may be because the cognitive immaturity of young children means that they cannot manage the cognitive demands of cognitive behaviour therapy. This paper seeks to establish how well children aged 7–8 and aged 10–11 can complete a task requiring them to distinguish between thoughts and behaviours (based on Greenberger & Padesky, 1995). Half of the children were provided with a visual cue and half were not. The effects of age, the visual cue, and verbal IQ on performance were examined. Seventy-two children were randomized to the cue and no-cue condition and individually tested during school time. Both age groups performed well and there was a significant difference between older and younger children, with the older children performing better. Visual cues did not aid performance. Verbal IQ was significantly associated with performance in the younger but not the older children. The implications of these results for the delivery of cognitive behaviour therapy with children and future research are discussed. Keywords: Children, thoughts, behaviours, cognitive, development

The Jaguarao stratoid dacites (Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil) are limited in areal extent, are comprised of about 3.2 km(3) of preserved erupted material, and outcrop only in areas of the region underlain by mylonitic and ultramylonitic rocks. They are S-type volcanic rocks containing cordierite, orthopyroxene, plagioclase, and ilmenite as liquidus phases, and partially melted granite, gneiss, and migmatite enclaves that are very similar to the Precambrian basement rocks. The Jaguarao lavas have distinct geochemical signatures and Sr-Nd isotopes with respect to other volcanic rocks of the region. Available geochronological data for Jaguarao dacites range between 157 +/- 5 Ma and 139.6 +/- 7.4 Ma. Considering the errors, the younger ages obtained for Jaguarao lavas overlap the 138-128 Ma age of rocks of the Serra Geral Group, and thus indicate that the dacites were erupted prior to the break-up of Gondwana in this region. Petrographic, mineralogical, and petrochemical data, as well as the tectonic context of the Jaguarao lavas, suggest that magma genesis was linked, at least in part, to friction melts. The dacitic magma was generated by partial melting reactions involving biotite breakdown in a dominantly quartz-feldspathic source terrane, leaving a granulite facies residue in subsurface. These melts were probably generated as a consequence of crustal thinning linked to simple shear extension just prior to Gondwana break-up and rifting of the southern Atlantic Ocean. The Itaiacoca Belt is a sequence of metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks that crop out east of Parana and southeast of Sao Paulo states, in southern Brazil. This geologic-geochronologic study supports division of the Itaiacoca Belt into two major lithologic sequences. The older is a carbonate platform sequence (dolomitic meta-limestones/metamarls/calc-phyllites/ carbonate phyllites) with minimum deposition ages related to the end of the Mesoproterozoic/beginning of the Neoproterozoic (1030-908 Ma:U-Pb, zircon of metabasic rocks). The younger sequence contains mainly clastics deposits (meta-arkoses/metavolcanics/metaconglomerates/metapelites) with deposition ages related to the Neoproterozoic (645-628 Ma:U-Pb,zircon of metavolcanic rocks). These ages are quite close to K-Ar ages (fine fraction) of the 628-610 Ma interval, associated with metamorphism and cooling of the Itaiacoca Belt. The contact between the dolomitic meta-limestones and meta-arkoses is marked by intense stretching and high-angle foliation, suggesting that the discontinuity between these associations resulted from shearing. It is proposed here that the term Itaiacoca Sequence, should represent the dolomitic meta-limestones, and the term Abapa Sequence represents the meta-arkoses/metavolcanics/phyllites. in a major tectonic context, these periods are related to the break-up of Rodinia Supercontinent (1030-908 Ma) and the amalgamation of the Gondwana Supercontinent (645-628 Ma). Zircon recrystallization is a common process during high-grade metamorphism and promotes partial or complete resetting of the original isotopic and chemical characteristics of the mineral and thus complicates U-Pb geochronological interpretation. In Central Brazil, this complexity may be illustrated by three composite mafic-ultramafic intrusions metamorphosed under amphibolite-to-granulite conditions. Their ages of emplacement and metamorphic ages have been a matter of controversy for the last thirty years. The Serra da Malacacheta and Barro Alto complexes make up the southernmost of these layered bodies and four samples from distinct rock types were investigated in order to verify the consequences of metamorphic alteration of zircon for U-Pb dating. Cathodoluminescent imaging reveals internal features which are typical of concomitant dissolution-reprecipitation processes, such as convolute zoning and inward-moving recrystallization fronts, even in samples in which partially preserved igneous textures are observed. Due to this extensive alteration, LA-ICPMS U-Pb isotopic analysis yielded inconclusive data. However, in situ Hf isotopic and trace-element analyses help to clarify the real meaning of the geochronological data. Low Lu/Hf (<0.004) and homogeneous (176)Hf/(177)Hf(t) values imply that the zircon populations within individual samples have crystallized in a single episode, despite the observed variations in age values. Trace element signatures of zircon grains from garnet-bearing samples reveal that they were unreactive to the development of the peak metamorphism mineral assemblage and, thus, the main chemical feature in such grains is attributed to a coupled dissolution-reprecipitation process. However, in the Cafelandia amphibolite an additional alteration process is identified, probably related to the influx of late-stage fluids. Combined isotopic and geochemical investigation on zircon grains allowed the distinction of two magmatic events. The first corresponds to the crystallization of the Serra da Malacacheta Complex and characterizes a juvenile magmatism at similar to 1.3 Ga. The younger episode, recognized in the Barro Alto Complex, is dated at ca. 800 Ma and is represented by mafic and ultramafic rocks showing intense contamination with continental crust, implying that the emplacement took place, most likely, in a continental back-arc setting. Altered zircon domains as well as titanite grains date the metamorphic event at ca. 760-750 Ma. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Patriarchal values: girls are more apt to change How has the family value system changed between generations, especially when taking into account the gender dimension? This article presents some results from a study carried outin 2007 in one village of the Gourani tribe where the people are followers of Ahle Hagh in Islamabad Gharb (west of Iran). The differences between generations (those born and raised before and after the Islamic Revolution) in patriarchal values in the family are statistically significant. The older generation opts for the man of the family to make most of the decisions; on children’s education, marriage, naming, the families expenditure, the place for residence, the social network of the family and even the number of children. The younger generation has a different value system and it has moved towards a more egalitarian type of family. With the gender variable included in the findings we see that although the values of the younger male population have evolved toward a less patriarchal decision making structure inthe family, the degree of changes among the young women is much higher. Looking into the preferences for male sex for the first child as well as a larger number of boys in the family, the difference between generations is significant. However data on the differences analyzed with the gender variable proves that the changes concerning the equality of sexes are mainly due to drastic changes in the young women’s value system. That is, the male population, young or old, still prefer to have a boy as their first born and to have more sons in the family. But the young female generation in the rural area sees less difference in having boys or girls in the family. It is concluded that reforms in the old value system is an evolving process of everyday life and that the girls are the main social force for change.

Bakgrund: Unga vuxna som sökte vård sökte oftast inte för den psykiska ohälsan utan istället för något somatiskt. Det är viktigt att få de yngre vuxna att söka sig till vården när behov uppstår och underlätta till en god förbindelse mellan sjukvården och de unga vuxna. Syfte: Syftet med denna studie var att beskriva unga vuxnas upplevelser av sjuksköterskans bemötande av psykisk ohälsa vid kontakt med hälso- och sjukvården. Metod: Studien genomfördes som en litteraturöversikt. Resultat: För de unga vuxna var det inte lätt att komma in i vården på rätt vårdnivå om personen inte kom i kontakt med en sjuksköterska som hade ett holistiskt synsätt. Vården för de unga med psykisk ohälsa bör vara tillgänglig och informationen om tillgängligheten behöver ständigt upprepas. Slutsats: Det är viktigt att sjuksköterskor har kunskap och erfarenhet av unga psykiska människor för att kunna hjälpa dem med den psykiska ohälsan när de söker vård. Relationen mellan patienten och sjuksköterskan är av stor vikt för den fortsatta kontakten med vården för den unge vuxna. Det är viktigt att de känner tillit och förtroende.

Drawing onobservations in texts from the national test in Swedish, the report discusses tworelated questions: 1) whether students develop their writing abilities betweengrades 5 and 9, two measuring points in the system of national tests in Swedish,and 2) how this development might be measured. In the study, two samples ofschool texts – from grades 5 and 9 respectively – were compared in terms of textlength, sentence length and genre match at a macro level. A more detailedanalysis of lexical concentration and text structure was performed on a narrowersample of twenty texts from each school grade. The comparison showed that theolder pupils write longer texts, with longer sentences and a more varied textstructure. The younger children, however, produce texts with higher lexicalconcentration – which might be construed as a higher degree of textual content –and they follow the given genre instructions more closely.

Spring into Summer is a novel based on my experiences as a student living in London for a year. The central character, an American under-graduate student studying history, attempts to complete a piece of work by his older brother who is killed in a car accident several months prior to his brother's departure for England. The narrative traces the younger brother's efforts and eventual failure to work on the history; in so doing, he also fails to become more like his older brother whom he greatly loved and admired. Thus, a doppelganger, or "Double" of sorts is used. Most of the action of the novel is set in London. However, the main character also travels to Dublin, York, and several other places in the British Isles, thereby giving a more complete picture of the experiences an American student undergoes while living abroad. During a year which many people might see as an escape from the problems and pressures of everyday life, the central character is forced to undergo a painful process of self-examination, resulting in his reevaluation of himself, his priorities, and his ambitions.
