La nécessité d'une multiplicité de concepts de gène en biologie

Le concept de gène est central en biologie. Certains ont avancé (Ruse (1971, 1976)) que la génétique classique pouvait être réduite à la génétique moléculaire. Dans le même ordre d'idée, Richard Dawkins, dans The Extended Phenotype, offre une double définition de son concept de gène qui présuppose qu'il soit possible d'opérer cette réduction. Nous comptons montrer que la génétique moléculaire et la génétique des populations ont chacune leurs problématiques propres en reconstituant l'histoire de la génétique depuis Darwin. Ensuite, nous expliciterons la position de Dawkins et soulignerons les contradictions auxquelles il parvient en raison de cette réduction infondée. À la suite de quoi, nous nous attarderons aux nouvelles découvertes moléculaires qui montrent qu'il n'est pas possible d'opérer la réduction d'un des concepts à l'autre. Nous terminerons en soulignant que la thèse génocentriste de Dawkins n'est pas mise en péril par l'abandon de la réduction, mais qu'il est nécessaire de tempérer ces prétentions. La conclusion globale de ce mémoire est qu'il est possible d'admettre le concept de Dawkins, mais pas la manière dont il l'utilise. Le concept est bon, il n'est tout simplement pas dans le bon cadre théorique.

La filosofía marxista entre Francia y América Latina : Una lectura de la correspondencia entre Louis Althusser y Fernanda Navarro

En 1988, fue publicado por Siglo XXI México Filosofía y marxismo, un pequeño libro de entrevistas al filósofo marxista francés Louis Althusser realizadas por la profesora de filosofía mexicana Fernanda Navarro. En dicho volumen, Althusser retomaba varios de los aspectos fundamentales que habían caracterizado su intervención durante las décadas de 1960 y 1970 e introducía elementos absolutamente novedosos como las formulaciones alrededor del materialismo aleatorio y la filosofía del encuentro. La correspondencia mantenida entre Althusser y Navarro entre la entrevista de 1984 y la publicación de Filosofía y marxismo en 1988, habilita un horizonte interpretativo que permite integrar el vínculo establecido entre ambos filósofos en el marco más general del itinerario teórico-político de Althusser en Francia y de las proyecciones del althusserianismo hacia América Latina. Veremos de qué manera aquel encuentro entre Althusser y Navarro estuvo originado en un intercambio epistolar previo entre el filósofo francés y Mauricio Malamud, un comunista argentino difusor de la obra de Althusser en Argentina y por entonces exiliado en Morelia. Asimismo, la correspondencia entre Althusser y Navarro nos permite ver que el hecho de que el libro haya sido publicado únicamente en América Latina fue resultado de un interés específico de Althusser en los procesos políticos latinoamericanos. Finalmente, el intercambio permite captar el tenor filosófico del mencionado libro en el marco más general de la especificidad de la intervención althusseriana

Color and Shape: A Plea for Equal Treatment

Many philosophers, especially in the wake of the 17th century, have favored an inegalitarian view of shape and color, according to which shape is mind-independent while color is mind-dependent. In this essay, I advance a novel argument against inegalitarianism. The argument begins with an intuition about the modal dependence of color on shape, namely: it is impossible for something to have a color without having a shape (i.e. without having some sort of spatial extension, or at least spatial location). I then argue that, given reasonable assumptions, inegalitarianism contradicts this modal-dependence principle. Given the plausibility of the latter, I conclude that we should reject inegalitarianism in favor of some form of egalitarianism—either a subjective egalitarianism on which both shape and color are mind-dependent or an objective egalitarianism on which both shape and color are mind-independent.

On the Interest in Beauty and Disinterest

Contemporary philosophical attitudes toward beauty are hard to reconcile with its importance in the history of philosophy. Philosophers used to allow it a starring role in their theories of autonomy, morality, or the good life. But today, if beauty is discussed at all, it is often explicitly denied any such importance. This is due, in part, to the thought that beauty is the object of “disinterested pleasure”. In this paper I clarify the notion of disinterest and develop two general strategies for resisting the emphasis on it, in the hopes of getting a clearer view of beauty’s significance. I present and discuss several literary depictions of the encounter with beauty that motivate both strategies. These depictions illustrate the ways in which aesthetic experience can be personally transformative. I argue that they present difficulties for disinterest theories and suggest we abandon the concept of disinterest to focus instead on the special kind of interest beauty fuels. I propose a closer look at the Platonic thought that beauty is the object of love.
