The feasibility of using AlGaInAs lasers for high-speed modulation at high temperatures was evaluated and compared with performance of GaInAsP devices. Both drift-diffusion and rate equation simulation were involved so that the temperature dependence of material parameters was found in terms of overall dynamic performance. Differential gain was estimated by means of drift-diffusion simulations.

Operating limits of a chirped fibre grating dispersion compensator are determined using a complete optical system model. A 10cm compensator extends the transmission range of an optimised 10Gbit/s MQW electroabsorption modulator from 80km to 425km.

155Mb/s operation of an optical wireless link is achieved by using the spectral characteristics and angular emission spectra of a 7-element tracking array of 980nm RC-LEDs. Preliminary results show extension to 200 Mb/s/channel. © 2006 Optical Society of America.

Previous studies have shown that several types of stress can induce memory impairment. However, the memory effects of paradoxical sleep deprivation (PSD), a stressor in itself, are unclear. We therefore compared passive avoidance behavior of rats undergoing PSD and PSD stress yoked-control (PSC) using the "reversed flowerpot method." When rats were kept isolated on a PSC platform for 24 It immediately after criterion training, retention trials showed impaired aversive memory storage. When delayed for 24 h after criterion training, PSC stress did not disrupt retention performance. In rats subjected to PSD, either immediately or 24 It after criterion training, there was no disruption of aversive memory consolidation. These results suggest that, during stress, paradoxical sleep plays a role in erasing aversive memory traces, in line with the theory that we "dream in order to forget." (C) 2003 Elsevier Inc. Communication permeates every aspect of an engineer's work-from clarifying product specifications to shaping social ties. This paper offers an overview of recommendations from literature to improve communication within and among engineering teams. We assume communication problems are often the outcome of underlying factors and that it is fruitful to study and improve these influences. Having been empirically elicited in prior research, 24 factors considered in this paper include, e.g., availability of information about product specifications, roles and responsibilities, and overview of sequence of tasks. To improve these factors in order to enable effective communication, this paper collates more than hundred recommendations from journal articles and textbooks published in the fields of engineering design, management science, sociology, and psychology. Recommendations include, for example, identify priorities through risk and bottleneck analysis, give clear descriptions and role expectations, and employ effective process modeling tools. Contributions of this paper are a list of recommendations for industry practitioners and an effort-benefit evaluation of individual recommendations. Copyright © 2002-2012 The Design Society.
