In the distributed storage setting introduced by Dimakis et al., B units of data are stored across n nodes in the network in such a way that the data can be recovered by connecting to any k nodes. Additionally one can repair a failed node by connecting to any d nodes while downloading at most beta units of data from each node. In this paper, we introduce a flexible framework in which the data can be recovered by connecting to any number of nodes as long as the total amount of data downloaded is at least B. Similarly, regeneration of a failed node is possible if the new node connects to the network using links whose individual capacity is bounded above by beta(max) and whose sum capacity equals or exceeds a predetermined parameter gamma. In this flexible setting, we obtain the cut-set lower bound on the repair bandwidth along with a constructive proof for the existence of codes meeting this bound for all values of the parameters. An explicit code construction is provided which is optimal in certain parameter regimes.

Convolutional network-error correcting codes (CNECCs) are known to provide error correcting capability in acyclic instantaneous networks within the network coding paradigm under small field size conditions. In this work, we investigate the performance of CNECCs under the error model of the network where the edges are assumed to be statistically independent binary symmetric channels, each with the same probability of error pe(0 <= p(e) < 0.5). We obtain bounds on the performance of such CNECCs based on a modified generating function (the transfer function) of the CNECCs. For a given network, we derive a mathematical condition on how small p(e) should be so that only single edge network-errors need to be accounted for, thus reducing the complexity of evaluating the probability of error of any CNECC. Simulations indicate that convolutional codes are required to possess different properties to achieve good performance in low p(e) and high p(e) regimes. For the low p(e) regime, convolutional codes with good distance properties show good performance. For the high p(e) regime, convolutional codes that have a good slope ( the minimum normalized cycle weight) are seen to be good. We derive a lower bound on the slope of any rate b/c convolutional code with a certain degree.

The bipolar point spread function (PSF) corresponding to the Wiener filter tor correcting linear-motion-blurred pictures is implemented in a noncoherent optical processor. The following two approaches are taken for this implementation: (1) the PSF is modulated and biased so that the resulting function is non-negative and (2) the PSF is split into its positive and sign-reversed negative parts, and these two parts are dealt with separately. The phase problem associated with arriving at the pupil function from these modified PSFs is solved using both analytical and combined analytical-iterative techniques available in the literature. The designed pupil functions are experimentally implemented, and deblurring in a noncoherent processor is demonstrated. The postprocessing required (i.e., demodulation in the first approach to modulating the PSF and intensity subtraction in the second approach) are carried out either in a coherent processor or with the help of a PC-based vision system. The deblurred outputs are presented.

Hard, low stress diamond-like carbon films have been deposited by plasma assisted chemical vapour deposition technique, The various substrates include soft IR components like ZnS and ZnSe windows, Gaseous precursors such as propene, ethyl alcohol and acetone have been used to synthesize the films to study the nature of precursors in determining the film compatibility with the underlying component (substrate), The residual compressive stresses, the Young's modulus and the adhesion energy of the films have been estimated to be 10(10) dynes/cm(2), 10(10) N/m(2) and 1000 ergs/cm(2) respectively. To alleviate film failure, a study on the effects of additive gases such as hydrogen and the use of buffer layers such as ZrO2, has been undertaken, The diamond-like carbon films produced here are hard (5000 kg/mm(2)), specularly smooth in the wavelength region from 2.5 mu m to 20 mu m, with no microstructural features and have excellent adhesion on ZnS and ZnSe windows. The figure of merit of these films for aero-space applications has been evaluated by subjecting the film-buffer layer ZnS or ZnSe composite stack to wind, dust and rain erosion studies and by establishing the integrity of the specular IR transmittance of the stack upto 16 or 20 mu m as the case may be.

We present a method for measuring the local velocities and first-order variations in velocities in a timevarying image. The scheme is an extension of the generalized gradient model that encompasses the local variation of velocity within a local patch of the image. Motion within a patch is analyzed in parallel by 42 different spatiotemporal filters derived from 6 linearly independent spatiotemporal kernels. No constraints are imposed on the image structure, and there is no need for smoothness constraints on the velocity field. The aperture problem does not arise so long as there is some two-dimensional structure in the patch being analyzed. Among the advantages of the scheme is that there is no requirement to calculate second or higher derivatives of the image function. This makes the scheme robust in the presence of noise. The spatiotemporal kernels are of simple form, involving Gaussian functions, and are biologically plausible receptive fields. The validity of the scheme is demonstrated by application to both synthetic and real video images sequences and by direct comparison with another recently published scheme Biol. The advent of high intensity lasers coupled with the recent advances in crystal technology has led to rapid progress in the field of nonlinear optics. This article traces the history of materials development that has taken place over the past forty odd years and dwells on the current status in this important area. The materials aspect is discussed under three classes viz. inorganic, organic and semiorganic crystals. In the end, some of the crystal growth work that has been carried out in author's laboratory is presented.

Attempts to prepare hydrogen-bond-directed nonlinear optical materials from a 1:1 molar mixture Of D-(+)-dibenzoyltartaric acid (DBT, I) and 4-aminopyridine (4-AP, II) resulted in two salts of different stoichiometry. One of them crystallizes in an unusual 1.5:1 (acid:base) monohydrate salt form III while the other one crystallizes as 1:1 (acid:base) salt IV. Crystal structures of both of the salts were determined from single-crystal X-ray diffraction data. The salt III crystallizes in a monoclinic space group C2 with a = 30.339(l), b = 7.881(2), c = 14.355(1) angstrom, beta = 97.48(1)degrees, V = 3403.1(9) angstrom3, Z = 4, R(w) = 0.058, R(w)= 0.058. The salt IV also crystallizes in a monoclinic space group P2(1) with a = 7.500(1), b = 14.968(2), c = 10.370(1) angstrom, beta = 102.67(1)degrees, V = 1135.9(2) angstrom3, Z = 2, R = 0.043, R(w) = 0.043. Interestingly, two DBT molecules with distinctly different conformation are present in the same crystal lattice of salt III. Extensive hydrogen-bonding interactions are found in both of the salts, and both of them show SHG intensity 1.4-1.6 times that of urea.

Optical absorption and photoluminescence studies have been carried out at room temperature in 25 R2O-25 GeO2-49.5 B2O3-0.5 Nd2O3 glass systems, (Composition in mol%, R= Li, Na, K and Rb). Judd Ofelt Intensity parameters and other parameters like Racah (E-1, E-2 and E-3), Slater-Condon-Shortley (F-2, F-4 and F-6) Spin-Orbit Coupling (xi(4f)) and Configuration Interaction (alpha, beta and gamma) for Nd3+ ion in the glass system are calculated. The variation of the 02 parameters are interpreted in terms of the covalency of the RE ion in the glass matrix. Further the hypersensitive transition I-4(9/2) -> (4)G(5/2), (2)G(7/2) is analyzed with respect to the intensity ratio I-L/I-S and is found to be dependent on the type of alkali in the glass matrix. The Photoluminescence studies do not show any appreciable shift in the peak emission wavelength of the F-4(3/2) to I-4(11/2) transition with the change in alkali type. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. Large MIMO systems with tens of antennas in each communication terminal using full-rate non-orthogonal space-time block codes (STBC) from Cyclic Division Algebras (CDA) can achieve the benefits of both transmit diversity as well as high spectral efficiencies. Maximum-likelihood (ML) or near-ML decoding of these large-sized STBCs at low complexities, however, has been a challenge. In this paper, we establish that near-ML decoding of these large STBCs is possible at practically affordable low complexities. We show that the likelihood ascent search (LAS) detector, reported earlier by us for V-BLAST, is able to achieve near-ML uncoded BER performance in decoding a 32x32 STBC from CDA, which employs 32 transmit antennas and sends 32(2) = 1024 complex data symbols in 32 time slots in one STBC matrix (i.e., 32 data symbols sent per channel use). In terms of coded BER, with a 16x16 STBC, rate-3/4 turbo code and 4-QAM (i.e., 24 bps/Hz), the LAS detector performs close to within just about 4 dB from the theoretical MIMO capacity. Our results further show that, with LAS detection, information lossless (ILL) STBCs perform almost as good as full-diversity ILL (FD-ILL) STBCs. Such low-complexity detectors can potentially enable implementation of high spectral efficiency large MIMO systems that could be considered in wireless standards.

Cooperative communication using rateless codes, in which the source transmits an infinite number of parity bits to the destination until the receipt of an acknowledgment, has recently attracted considerable interest. It provides a natural and efficient mechanism for accumulating mutual information from multiple transmitting relays. We develop an analysis of queued cooperative relay systems that combines the communication-theoretic transmission aspects of cooperative communication using rateless codes over Rayleigh fading channels with the queuing-theoretic aspects associated with buffering messages at the relays. Relay cooperation combined with queuing reduces the message transmission times and also helps distribute the traffic load in the network, which improves throughput significantly.

We highlight our recent experimental work on an efficient molecular nonlinear optical crystal, 3-methoxy 4-hydroxy benzaldehyde (MHBA). Optical quality single crystals of MHBA were grown from mixtures of solvents and from melt. The overall absorption and transparency window were improved by growing them in a mixture of chloroform and acetone. The grown crystals were characterized for their optical transmission, mechanical hardness and laser damage. We have observed a strong correlation between mechanical properties and laser induced damage.

Transparent BaNaB9O15 (BNBO), BaLiB9O15 (BLBO) and SrLiB9O15 (SLBO) glasses were fabricated via the conventional melt-quenching technique. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Differential thermal analysis (DTA) studies carried out on the as-quenched glasses confirmed their amorphous and glassy nature, respectively. The optical properties for these as-quenched glasses were investigated. The refractive index, optical band gap. Urbach energy and Fermi energy were determined. The average electronic polarizability calculated from the refractive index expression. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

For the number of transmit antennas N = 2(a) the maximum rate (in complex symbols per channel use) of all the Quasi-Orthogonal Designs (QODs) reported in the literature is a/2(a)-1. In this paper, we report double-symbol-decodable Space-Time Block Codes with rate a-1/2(a)-2 for N = 2(a) transmit antennas. In particular, our code for 8 and 16 transmit antennas offer rates 1 and 3/4 respectively, the known QODs offer only 3/4 and 1/2 respectively. Our construction is based on the representations of Clifford algebras and applicable for any number of transmit antennas. We study the diversity sum and diversity product of our codes. We show that our diversity sum is larger than that of all known QODs and hence our codes perform better than the comparable QODs at low SNRs for identical spectral efficiency. We provide simulation results for various spectral efficiencies.
