The optical absorption spectra of two samples of grossular have been measured at room temperature. An intense charge transfer band (UVCT) of iron extends to the visible and near infrared region. Some peaks associated to Fe3+ ions in tetrahedral and octahedral positions have been identified and their energy levels were computed. Mn2+ and Fe2+ ions are responsible with some bands and probably these ions occupy dodecahedral positions. No change in the intensity of optical absorption spectra were found after gamma dose, but only the 505 nm band decreases with irradiation. The OH spectra, consisting of OH overtones at 2750nm and asymmetric OH bands in the near infrared region were observed in the two samples. The heat treatment produces Fe2+ -> Fe3+ and Mn2+ -> Mn3+ by oxidation. This last was observed in sample II only. The thermally stimulated luminescence of both grossular samples has been investigated. Due to differences in iron and manganese concentration, not only a large difference has been observed in their optical absorption behavior, but also a striking difference in their thermoluminescent behavior. Actually, it is not clear whether other impurities such as Ti, Na and K that are present in quite different concentration in grossular I and II are also contributing to the thermoluminescenct properties of both samples. The electronic and optical properties of grossular garnet are investigated using density functional theory (DFT) within generalized gradient approximation (GGA). The calculated lattice parameters are in good agreement with the experiment data. The electronic structure shows that grossular has a direct band gap of 5.22 eV. The dielectric functions, reflective index, extinction coefficient, reflectivity and energy-loss spectrum are calculated. The optical properties of grossular are discussed based on the band structure calculations. The O 2p states and Si 3s play a major role in these optical transitions as initial and final states, respectively. The absorption spectrum is localized in the ultraviolet range between 30 and 250 nm. Finally, we concluded that pure grossular crystal does not absorb radiation in the visible range. This study reports the results of ab initio electronic and optical calculations for pure socialite crystal using the linear augmented plane wave (LAPW) method within density functional theory (DFT). The calculated electronic structure revealed predominantly orbital characters of the valence band and the conduction band, and enabled us to determine the type and the value of the fundamental gap of the compound. The imaginary part of the dielectric tensor, extinction coefficient and refraction index were calculated as functions of the incident radiation wavelength. It is shown that the O 2p states and Na 3s states play the major role in optical transitions as initial and final states, respectively. The absorption spectrum is localized in the ultraviolet range between 40 and 250 nm. Furthermore, we concluded that the material does not absorb radiation in the visible range. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. Barium molybdate (BaMoO(4)) powders were synthesized by the co-precipitation method and processed in microwave-hydrothermal at 140 degrees C for different times. These powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform Raman (FT-Raman), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption spectroscopies and photoluminescence (PL) measurements. XRD patterns and FT-Raman spectra showed that these powders present a scheelite-type tetragonal structure without the presence of deleterious phases. FT-IR spectra exhibited a large absorption band situated at around 850.4 cm(-1), which is associated to the Mo-O antisymmetric stretching vibrations into the [MoO(4)] clusters. UV-vis absorption spectra indicated a reduction in the intermediary energy levels within band gap with the processing time evolution. First-principles quantum mechanical calculations based on the density functional theory were employed in order to understand the electronic structure (band structure and density of states) of this material. The powders when excited with different wavelengths (350 nm and 488 nm) presented variations. This phenomenon was explained through a model based in the presence of intermediary energy levels (deep and shallow holes) within the band gap. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

BACKGROUND: Optical spectroscopy is a noninvasive technique with potential applications for diagnosis of oral dysplasia and early cancer. In this study, we evaluated the diagnostic performance of a depth-sensitive optical spectroscopy (DSOS) system for distinguishing dysplasia and carcinoma from non-neoplastic oral mucosa. METHODS: Patients with oral lesions and volunteers without any oral abnormalities were recruited to participate. Autofluorescence and diffuse reflectance spectra of selected oral sites were measured using the DSOS system. A total of 424 oral sites in 124 subjects were measured and analyzed, including 154 sites in 60 patients with oral lesions and 270 sites in 64 normal volunteers. Measured optical spectra were used to develop computer-based algorithms to identify the presence of dysplasia or cancer. Sensitivity and specificity were calculated using a gold standard of histopathology for patient sites and clinical impression for normal volunteer sites. RESULTS: Differences in oral spectra were observed in: (1) neoplastic versus nonneoplastic sites, (2) keratinized versus nonkeratinized tissue, and (3) shallow versus deep depths within oral tissue. Algorithms based on spectra from 310 nonkeratinized anatomic sites (buccal, tongue, floor of mouth, and lip) yielded an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.96 in the training set and 0.93 in the validation set. CONCLUSIONS: The ability to selectively target epithelial and shallow stromal depth regions appeared to be diagnostically useful. For nonkeratinized oral sites, the sensitivity and specificity of this objective diagnostic technique were comparable to that of clinical diagnosis by expert observers. Thus, DSOS has potential to augment oral cancer screening efforts in community settings. Cancer 2009;115:1669-79. (C) 2009 American Cancer Society.

Nanostructural beta-nickel hydroxide (beta-Ni(OH)(2)) plates were prepared using the microwave hydrothermal (MH) method at a low temperature and short reaction times. An ammonia solution was employed as the coordinating agent, which reacts with [Ni(H(2)O)(6)](2+) to control the growth of beta-Ni(OH)(2) nuclei. A trigonal beta-Ni(OH)(2) single phase was observed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses, and the crystal cell was constructed with structural parameters and atomic coordinates obtained from Rietveld refinement. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) images revealed that the samples consisted of hexagonal-shaped nanoplates with a different particle size distribution. Broad absorption bands assigned as transitions of Ni(2+) in oxygen octahedral sites were revealed by UV-vis spectra. Photoluminescence (PL) properties observed with a maximum peak centered in the blue-green region were attributed to different defects, which were produced during the nucleation process. We present a growth process scheme of the beta-Ni(OH)(2) nanoplates. (C) 2011 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Structural, spectroscopic and dielectric properties of thulium-doped laser-heated pedestal Ta(2)O(5) as-grown fibres were studied. Undoped samples grow preferentially with a single crystalline monoclinic structure. The fibre with the lowest thulium content (0.1 at%) also shows predominantly a monoclinic phase and no intra-4f(12) Tm(3+) recombination was observed. For sample with the highest thulium amount (1.0 at%), the appearance of a dominant triclinic phase as well as intraionic optical activation was observed. The dependence of photoluminescence on excitation energy allows identification of different site locations of Tm(3+) ions in the lattice. The absence of recombination between the first and the ground-state multiplets as well as the temperature dependence of the observed transitions was justified by an efficient energy transfer between the Tm(3+) ions. Microwave dielectric properties were investigated using the small perturbation theory. At a frequency of 5 GHz, the undoped material exhibits a dielectric permittivity of 21 and for thulium-doped Ta(2)O(5) samples it decreases to 18 for the highest doping concentration. Nevertheless, the dielectric losses maintain a very low value. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Erbium-doped single crystal fibers, with low phonon energy and fairly high absorption and emission cross sections are interesting laser active media, for compact, near-infrared and/or upconversion lasers. In this work, high optical quality Er3+-doped CaNb2O6 and CaTa2O6 single crystal fibers were successfully grown by the versatile laser-heated pedestal growth technique, and characterized from the structural and spectroscopic points of view. The results indicate that these crystal fiber compositions, which had not been explored so far, offer potential applications, not only as laser active media, but also in other optical devices. High energy band gap hosts doped with lanthanide ions are suitable for optical devices applications To study the potential of Ta(2)O(5) as a host compound pure and Eu(2)O(3)-doped Ta(2)O(5) crystal fibers were grown by the laser-heated pedestal growth technique in diameters ranging from 250 to 2600 pm and in lengths of up to 50 mm The axial temperature gradient at the solid/liquid interface of pure Ta(2)O(5) fibers revealed a critical diameter of 2200 gm above which the fiber cracks X-ray diffraction measurements of the pure Ta(2)O(5) single crystals showed a monoclinic symmetry and a growth direction of [1 (1) over bar 0] An analysis of the pulling rate as a function of the fiber diameter for Eu(2)O(3)-doped Ta(2)O(5) fibers indicated a well defined region in which constitutional supercooling is absent Photoluminescence measurements of pure Ta(2)O(5) crystals using excitation above the band gap (3 8 eV) were dominated by a broad unstructured green band that peaked at 500 nm Three Eu(3+)-related optical centers were identified in the doped samples with nominal concentrations exceeding 1 mol% Two of these centers were consistent with the ion in the monoclinic phase with different oxygen coordinations The third one was visible in the presence of the triclinic phase (C) 2010 Elsevier B V All rights reserved

In this paper, calcium molybdate (CaMoO(4)) crystals (meso- and nanoscale) were synthesized by the coprecipitation method using different solvent volume ratios (water/ethylene glycol). Subsequently, the obtained suspensions were processed in microwave-assisted hydrothermal/solvothermal systems at 140 degrees C for 1 h. These meso- and nanocrystals processed were characterized by X-ray diffraction (X R I)), Fourier transform Raman (FT-Raman), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR). ultraviolet visible (UV-vis) absorption spectroscopies, held-emission gun scanning electron microscopy (FEG-SEM). transmission electron microscopy (TEM). and photoluminescence (PL) measurements. X RI) patterns and FT-Raman spectra showed that these meso- and nanocrystals have a scheelite-type tetragonal structure without the presence of deleterious phases. FT-IR spectra exhibited a large absorption band situated at around 827 cm(-1), which is associated with the Mo-O anti-symmetric stretching vibrations into the [MoO(4)] clusters. FEG-SEM micrographs indicated that the ethylene glycol concentration in the aqueous solution plays an important role in the morphological evolution of CaMoO(4) crystals. High-resolution TEM micrographs demonstrated that the mesocrystals consist of several aggregated nanoparticles with electron diffraction patterns of monocrystal. In addition, the differences observed in the selected area electron diffraction patterns of CaMoO(4) crystals proved the coexistence of both nano- and mesostructures, First-principles quantum mechanical calculations based on the density functional theory at the B3LYP level were employed in order to understand the band structure find density of states For the CaMoO(4). UV-vis absorption measurements evidenced a variation in optical band gap values (from 3.42 to 3.72 cV) for the distinct morphologies. The blue and green PI. emissions observed in these crystals were ascribed to the intermediary energy levels arising from the distortions on the [MoO(4)] clusters clue to intrinsic defects in the lattice of anisotropic/isotropic crystals.

CaNb(2)O(6) single crystal fibers were grown by the laser-heated pedestal growth technique, directly from the starting reagents. Optically transparent fibers were obtained in the form of rods with elliptical cross-section, free from cracks, impurities, and secondary phases, with an average diameter of 0.4 mm and about 20 mm of length. The fibers grew within the orthorhombic Pbcn columbite structure, with the growth axis nearly parallel to the crystallographic a-direction. The parameters b and c were parallel to the shorter and larger ellipsis axes. A special setup using a microscope was developed to obtain the far-infrared reflectivity spectra of these micrometer-sized fibers, allowing the identification and assignment of 34 of the 38 polar phonons foreseen for the material. From these phonons, the intrinsic dielectric constant ( of 185 THz) could be estimated, showing the potential of the material for applications in microwave circuitry. These results, along with previous polarized Raman data (Cryst. Growth Des. 2010, 10, 1569), allow us to present a comprehensive set of optical phonon modes and to discuss the potential use of designed CaNb(2)O(6) microcrystals in compact optical devices.

The synthesis, spectra and X-ray crystal structure of N,N`-(+/-)-trans-1,2-cyclohexylenebis(3-ethoxysalicylideneamine) H-2(t-3-EtOsalchxn), a salen-type ligand, are reported. The Schiff base was characterized by elemental analysis, m.p., IR, electronic spectra, H-1 and C-13 NMR spectra. The spectra are discussed and compared with those of N,N`-(+/-)-trans-1,2-cyclohexylenebis(salicylideneamine), H-2(t-salchxn). The electronic and IR spectra were also resolved by deconvolution. The influence of the ethoxy group on the IR, electronic spectrum, H-1 and C-13 NMR spectra is discussed. Strong intramolecular forces are present as supported by the IR and H-1 NMR spectra and the X-ray crystal structure. An intermolecular hydrogen bond is observed and appears twice in a pair of molecules in the unit cell. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

At the age of multi-media, portable electronic devices such as mobile phones, personal digital assistant and handheld gaming systems have increased the demand for high performance displays with low cost production. Inkjet printing color optical filters (COF) for LCD applications seem to be an interesting alternative to decrease the production costs. The advantage of inkjet printing technology is to be fast, accurate, easy to run and cheaper than other technologies. In this master thesis work, we used various disciplines such as optical microscopy, rheology, inkjet printing, profilometering and colorimetry. The specific aim of the thesis was to investigate the feasibility of using company-A pigment formulation in inkjet production of COF for active matrix LCD applications. Ideal viscosity parameters were determined from 10 to 20mPa·s for easy inkjet printing at room temperature. The red pigments used are fully dispersed into the solvent and present an excellent homogenous repartition after printing. Thickness investigations revealed that the printed COF were equal or slightly thicker than typically manufactured ones. The colorimetry investigations demonstrated color coordinates very close to the NTSC red standard. LED backlighting seems to be a valuable solution to combine with the printed COF regarding to the spectrum and color analysis. The results on this thesis will increase the understanding of inkjet printing company-A pigments to produce COF for LCD applications.

We have focused on the optical absorption edge of nanocrystalline Ga(1-x)Mn(x)N (0.00 <= x <= 0.18) films deposited by reactive RF magnetron sputtering. The films obtained are nanocrystalline with grain sizes of about 25 nm, having wurtzite structure and strong orientation texture in the c-axis direction. The optical characterizations of the absorption edges were obtained in the 190-2600 nm spectral range. The increase of the Mn content causes an increase of the absorption coefficient which can be clearly noticed at low energies, and a quasi-linear decrease of the optical gap. Broad absorption bands observed around similar to 1.3 and similar to 2.2 eV were associated with transitions between the Mn acceptor level and the valence and conduction bands, respectively. The observed changes in the optical properties due to the Mn incorporation observed in these nanocrystalline films are similar to those reported for ferromagnetic GaMnN single-crystal films.
