The objective of the present study was to determine the possibility of using stayability (STAY) of dams as a selection criterion for fertility in the Nelore breed. STAY was defined as whether or not a cow calved in a herd at a specific age or after this age given that she had calved at an earlier age. The specific ages studied were 5 (STAY5), 6 (STAY6) and 7 (STAY7) years. Data on 53 271, 46 011 and 41517 animals were analyzed for the respective ages. The Method 91 was used to estimate the variance components and a maximum threshold a posteriori model was used to predict the genetic values. The analyses provided h(2) estimates of 0.117+/-0.003, 0.122+/-0.004 and 0.171+/-0.005 for STAY5, STAY6 and STAY7, respectively. The ease with which the trait can be recorded and the h 2 estimates indicate that the use of this trait as a selection criterion can contribute to increased dam fertility. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. Blood samples from lactating, weaned and adult Holstein-Fresiean and Nelore cattle and Murrah buffaloes were tested through the study of hemogram and serum constituents. Red cell and leukocyte counts, and blood pH, fibrinogen, glucose, calcium, and phosphorus levels were similar in cattle and buffalo. Total protein, urea, creatinine, hemoglobin, magnesium, iron and aspartato aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase activities were higher in buffalo than cattle. Leukocyte counts were higher for weaned Holstein cattle than for Nelore cattle but similar to buffalo and Nelore cattle had the lowest neutrophil counts. Bilirrubin levels were lower for buffalo than for cattle. Phosphatase alkalyne activities were lower for weaned buffalo than for other animals. Gammaglutamyltransferase activities were the highest for lactating and weaned buffalo.

The present study was undertaken to evaluate the protein composition of the sperm membranes (SM) of Nelore bulls, assessing protein markers associated with bull fertility, and whether these markers can be used for predicting bull fertility. Samples were obtained of 20 Nelore bulls, with fertility ranked and divided into three groups (greater, normal and least). To rank the bull's fertility weighted classification was used (according to the number of pregnant cows, number of AI cows and number of herds, considering three different breeding seasons), using the PROC GENMOD as a statistical model, with 99% significance. A total of 7897 Nelore cows, randomly distributed among 28 different farms, were considered in the statistical analyses. The bulls were divided into three fertility groups (pregnancy rates): greater (%F > 80), normal (79 <%F > 71) and least (< 68%F) with 3, 13 and 4 bulls, respectively. Two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2DE) of sperm membranes indicated in 27 spots (SM40, SM53, SM69, SM93, SM102, SM111, SM137, SM138, SM189, SM196, SM201, SM202, SM204, SM225, SM236, SM237, SM239, SM241, SM246, SM247, SM275, SM283, SM342, SM346, SM355, SM372, SM391) was prevalent in the higher fertility group, and just one spot (SM244) was prevalent in the lower fertility group. Spots SM244 and SM239 had their identification defined by PMF/MALDI-MS, as BSP-A3 and aSFP, respectively. Both these proteins showed a great potential for predicting bull's fertility. The amount of aSFP was 8.5 times greater in the sperm membrane protein profile of the higher fertility groups of Nelore bulls. Besides that, the BSP-A3 was 2.5 times greater in the lower fertility group. For the other spots potentially associated with fertility not yet identified, additional tests will be necessary, but it is clear that the 2D electrophoresis of the sperm membrane can be used for a new approach to predict Nelore bull fertility. Puberty in Zebu heifers follows a pattern characterized by a decrease in the steroid feedback mechanism and an increase in LH concentration, which result in the first ovulation followed by a short estrous cycle and the onset of normal cycles thereafter. These events are similar to those observed in Bos taurus cattle but occur at a later age. The late onset of puberty is both genetic and environmental in origin and is reflected by the age at first calving that can be at 40 months of age or older in these animals. Age at puberty in Zebu heifers has been shown to have a high heritability. Consequently, selecting precocious heifers may be an effective means of reducing age at puberty in these animals and this approach is being adopted in commercial practice. Genetic selection is not the sole solution to the problem because environmental improvements are necessary, particularly in terms of improved nutrition. South American Zebu cattle are usually subject to sub-optimum nutritional and management conditions and, hence, exhibit late onset of puberty. Hybrids of Zebu and Bos taurus cattle exhibit heterosis in respect of the age of puberty with earlier onset than expected in crossbred animals. Recently, purebred South American Zebu cattle have been shown to have Bos taurus genes, indicating that there have been previous attempts to improve their productivity using this approach. It was concluded that the age at first calving in South American Zebu cattle can be reduced by exposing well-fed, yearling heifers to bulls and selecting, over several generations, those animals that become pregnant at an early age. Follicle ablation has been recognized as an efficient method of follicular wave synchronization. Treatment with recombinant bovine somatotropin (BST) has been shown to enhance follicular development in <(Bos taurus)under bar>. This experiment assessed the effects of these treatments in Nelore (<(B. indicus)under bar>) heifers. Eight cycling Nelore heifers were randomly assigned to 3 different treatments. on Day 2 of a synchronized cycle (Day 0 = day of ovulation), heifers assigned to Treatments 1 and 2 received 2 mL of saline, whereas heifers assigned to Treatment 3 received 320 mg of BST. on Day 5, the first-wave dominant follicle was ablated by ultrasoundguided transvaginal aspiration in heifers in Treatments 2 and 3, and all heifers received an injection of prostaglandin on Day 11. Aspiration of the dominant follicle advanced and synchronized (P < 0.05) the day of second-wave emergence (6.9 +/- 0.1 vs. 8.4 +/- 0.4) and the day of the pre-wave FSH peak (6.0 +/- 0.0 vs. 6.9 +/- 0.4), and increased FSH peak concentrations (381 +/- 21 vs. 292 +/- 30; pg/mL; P < 0.01). Recombinant bovine somatotropin treatment caused a two-fold increase in plasma insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) concentrations (P < 0.001) and resulted in a 36% increase in the number of small follicles (<5 mm; P < 0.001) compared with saline-treated heifers. In summary, in agreement with previous reports on <(B. taurus)under bar>, dominant follicle aspiration synchronized ovarian follicular development, and BST treatment increased peripheral concentrations of IGF-I in Nelore heifers. Recombinant bovine somatotropin also increased the number of small follicles, but this response appeared to be inferior to that reported for <(B. taurus)under bar>. (C) 2000 by Elsevier B.V.

ContentThis case study reported the presence of short tail sperm defect in the semen of three Nelore breed bulls. The sperm presented 0% of motility in the three animals evaluated and a total of 70%, 61% and 34% of pathologies of the intermediate piece of the tail respectively for animals 1, 2 and 3. It was identified that animals 2 and 3 had high degree of inbreeding, although no relationship was found with animal 1. Animal 2 was the only one that presented inbreeding coefficient (6.25%). His half-sib (animal 3) and animal 1, from the same herd, had shown no inbreeding, showing that inheritance is not the only determinant factor for its incidence on Nelore males.
