Aim: To compare the acidity of sugar-free hard candies dissolved in water and artificial saliva. Methods: Sugar-free Flopi Florestal hard candies (grape, strawberry, cherry, orange, ginger, lemon balm, fennel) were selected and grouped in 2 groups: G-1 (candies dissolved in distilled water) and G-2 (candies dissolved in artificial saliva). Candies were triturated with a porcelain pestle, yielding two samples of 20 g. Samples were dissolved in 120 mL distilled water (G-1) and 120 mL artificial saliva (20 mM NaHCO3, 3 mM NaH2PO4.H2O and 1 mM CaCl2.2H2O) (G-2), obtaining three samples of 30 mL for each of the flavors and groups. pH was measured using potentiometer and combined glass electrode. Titratable acidity was evaluated by adding 100 μL 1M NaOH aliquots until reaching pH 5.5. For statistical analysis, analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used. Means were compared by the Tukey test at 5% significance level (p<0.05) Results: All flavors of G-1 showed pH values below 5.5. Comparison of groups in the same flavor showed a significant increase in pH in flavors of G-2. Comparison of the titratable acidity between G-1 and G-2, showed that fruit flavors were significantly different from each other, with reduced acidity in G-2. Conclusions: All evaluated candies are acid, and dilution in artificial saliva raised their pH and lowered their titratable acidity, reducing their erosive potential.

The voltage source inverter (VSI) and current voltage source inverter (CSI) are widely used in industrial application. But the traditional VSIs and CSIs have one common problem: can’t boost or buck the voltage come from battery, which make them impossible to be used alone in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV/EV) motor drive application, other issue is the traditional inverter need to add the dead-band time into the control sequence, but it will cause the output waveform distortion. This report presents an impedance source (Z-source network) topology to overcome these problems, it can use one stage instead of two stages (VSI or CSI + boost converter) to buck/boost the voltage come from battery in inverter system. Therefore, the Z-source topology hardware design can reduce switching element, entire system size and weight, minimize the system cost and increase the system efficiency. Also, a modified space vector pulse-width modulation (SVPWM) control method has been selected with the Z-source network together to achieve the best efficiency and lower total harmonic distortion (THD) at different modulation indexes. Finally, the Z-source inverter controlling will modulate under two control sequences: sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM) and SVPWM, and their output voltage, ripple and THD will be compared.

Every space launch increases the overall amount of space debris. Satellites have limited awareness of nearby objects that might pose a collision hazard. Astrometric, radiometric, and thermal models for the study of space debris in low-Earth orbit have been developed. This modeled approach proposes analysis methods that provide increased Local Area Awareness for satellites in low-Earth and geostationary orbit. Local Area Awareness is defined as the ability to detect, characterize, and extract useful information regarding resident space objects as they move through the space environment surrounding a spacecraft. The study of space debris is of critical importance to all space-faring nations. Characterization efforts are proposed using long-wave infrared sensors for space-based observations of debris objects in low-Earth orbit. Long-wave infrared sensors are commercially available and do not require solar illumination to be observed, as their received signal is temperature dependent. The characterization of debris objects through means of passive imaging techniques allows for further studies into the origination, specifications, and future trajectory of debris objects. Conclusions are made regarding the aforementioned thermal analysis as a function of debris orbit, geometry, orientation with respect to time, and material properties. Development of a thermal model permits the characterization of debris objects based upon their received long-wave infrared signals. Information regarding the material type, size, and tumble-rate of the observed debris objects are extracted. This investigation proposes the utilization of long-wave infrared radiometric models of typical debris to develop techniques for the detection and characterization of debris objects via signal analysis of unresolved imagery. Knowledge regarding the orbital type and semi-major axis of the observed debris object are extracted via astrometric analysis. This knowledge may aid in the constraint of the admissible region for the initial orbit determination process. The resultant orbital information is then fused with the radiometric characterization analysis enabling further characterization efforts of the observed debris object. This fused analysis, yielding orbital, material, and thermal properties, significantly increases a satellite’s Local Area Awareness via an intimate understanding of the debris environment surrounding the spacecraft.

Artificial reefs are used as management tools for coastal fisheries and ecosystems and the knowledge of habitat use and fish movements around them is necessary to understand their performance and improve their design and location. In this study wild specimens of Diplodus sargus were tagged with acoustic tags and their movements were tracked using passive acoustic telemetry. The monitored area enclosed a natural rocky reef, an adjacent artificial reef (AR) and shallower sandy bottoms. Most of the fish were close to full time residents in the monitored area. Results revealed that D. sargus use the natural reef areas on a more frequent basis than the AR. However, excursions to the adjacent AR and sandy bottoms were frequently detected, essentially during daytime. The use of acoustic telemetry allowed a better understanding of the use of artificial reef structures and its adjacent areas by wild D. sargus providing information that is helpful towards the improvement of AR design and location. The vapor pressure of four liquid 1H,1H-perfluoroalcohols (CF3(CF2)n(CH2)OH, n ¼ 1, 2, 3, 4), often called odd-fluorotelomer alcohols, was measured as a function of temperature between 278 K and 328 K. Liquid densities were also measured for a temperature range between 278 K and 353 K. Molar enthalpies of vaporization were calculated from the experimental data. The results are compared with data from the literature for other perfluoroalcohols as well as with the equivalent hydrogenated alcohols. The results were modeled and interpreted using molecular dynamics simulations and the GC-SAFT-VR equation of state.

Digital soil mapping is an alternative for the recognition of soil classes in areas where pedological surveys are not available. The main aim of this study was to obtain a digital soil map using artificial neural networks (ANN) and environmental variables that express soillandscape relationships. This study was carried out in an area of 11,072 ha located in the Barra Bonita municipality, state of São Paulo, Brazil. A soil survey was obtained from a reference area of approximately 500 ha located in the center of the area studied. With the mapping units identified together with the environmental variables elevation, slope, slope plan, slope profile, convergence index, geology and geomorphic surfaces, a supervised classification by ANN was implemented. The neural network simulator used was the Java NNS with the learning algorithm "back propagation." Reference points were collected for evaluating the performance of the digital map produced. The occurrence of soils in the landscape obtained in the reference area was observed in the following digital classification: medium-textured soils at the highest positions of the landscape, originating from sandstone, and clayey loam soils in the end thirds of the hillsides due to the greater presence of basalt. The variables elevation and slope were the most important factors for discriminating soil class through the ANN. An accuracy level of 82% between the reference points and the digital classification was observed. The methodology proposed allowed for a preliminary soil classification of an area not previously mapped using mapping units obtained in a reference area

Despite numerous therapeutic interventions cancer is still today the second leading cause of death. A growing interest has been addressed to isothiocytanates and more recently, the 6- (methylsulfonyl) hexyl isothiocyanate (6-MITC), the main constituent of the rhizome of Wasabia Japonica, has stimulated the interest of researchers. Aim of the research was to study if 6-MITC is able to modulate the main mechanisms underlying chemopreventive process in leukemic cells lines, verify the selectivity of action and the safety of use in terms of mutagenicity. The study was conducted on different cell types. In particular, Jurkat and HL-60 cells were treated with increasing concentrations of 6-MITC and cell viability, induction of apoptosis, cell cycle analysis, autophagy modulation and stimulation of differentiation were evaluated by flow cytometry. PBL, the non-transformed counterparty of leukemia cells, was used to analyse the selectivity of action by studying the same mechanisms previously indicated. Finally, safety of use and antimutagenicity were studied in TK6 cells adopting an automated protocol in flow cytometry. The achieved results have demonstrated that isothiocyanate modulates many signaling pathways involved in chemopreventive mechanism. In fact, 6-MITC induces apoptosis of both transformed cells, limits tumor growth by slowing down the cell cycle of Jurkat cells and blocks HL-60 cell cycle, increases the autophagic flux and induces cytodifferentiation of promyelocytic HL-60 into macrophage and granulocytic phenotypes. Furthermore, the results obtained with 6-MITC on PBL from healthy donors suggest that the isothiocyante is a good selective cytotoxic agent. Essential feature of a good chemopreventive agent is selectivity toward cancer cells and low toxicity towards non-transformed cells. Finally, the analysis of the micronuclei revealed that 6-MITC is not mutagenic, ensuring safe use, and that instead, it is able to counteract the mutagenic activity of the aneuploidogen Vinblastine, demonstrating another important and interesting chemopreventive activity.

The time-dependent CP asymmetries of the $B^0\to\pi^+\pi^-$ and $B^0_s\toK^+K^-$ decays and the time-integrated CP asymmetries of the $B^0\toK^+\pi^-$ and $B^0_s\to\pi^+K^-$ decays are measured, using the $p-p$ collision data collected with the LHCb detector and corresponding to the full Run2. The results are compatible with previous determinations of these quantities from LHCb, except for the CP-violation parameters of the $B^0_s\to K^+K^-$ decays, that show a discrepancy exceeding 3 standard deviations between different data-taking periods. The investigations being conducted to understand the discrepancy are documented. The measurement of the CKM matrix element $|V_{cb}|$ using $B^0_{s}\to D^{(*)-}_s\mu^+ \nu_\mu$ is also reported, using the $p-p$ collision data collected with the LHCb detector and corresponding to the full Run1. The measurement leads to $|V_{cb}| = (41.4\pm0.6\pm0.9\pm1.2)\times 10^{-3}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third is due to external inputs. This measurement is compatible with the world averages and constitutes the first measurement of $|V_{cb}|$ at a hadron collider and the absolute first one with decays of the $B^0_s$ meson. The analysis also provides the very first measurements of the branching ratio and form factors parameters of the signal decay modes. The study of the characteristics ruling the response of an electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) to profitably operate in the high luminosity regime foreseen for the Upgrade2 of LHCb is reported in the final part of this Thesis. A fast and flexible simulation framework is developed to this purpose. Physics performance of different configurations of the ECAL are evaluated using samples of fully simulated $B^0\to \pi^+\pi^-\pi^0$ and $B^0\to K^{*0}e^+e^-$ decays. The results are used to guide the development of the future ECAL and are reported in the Framework Technical Design Report of the LHCb Upgrade2 detector.

Over the course of evolution, Nature has elegantly learned to use light to drive chemical reactions. On the other hand, humans have only recently started learning how to play with this powerful tool to carry out chemical transformations. In particular, a step forward was possible thanks to molecules and materials that can absorb light and trigger a series of processes that can drive chemical reactions. However, scarce elements are extensively employed in the design of most of these compounds and considerations on their scarcity and toxicity have sparked interest on alternatives based on earth-abundant elements. In this framework, the focus of this thesis has been the development and employment of heavy-metal free chromophores and of earth-abundant oxides. The first chapter regards the functionalization of boron-dipyrromethenes (BODIPYs) so as to allow access to their triplet excited state and tune their redox potentials, which was achieved thanks to the design of orthogonal donor-acceptor dyads. The BODIPY dyads were used to promote a photoredox reaction, and the mechanism of the reaction was clarified. In the second chapter, organic chromophores that display thermally-activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) were studied. These were used to perform enantioselective photoredox reactions, and a mechanistic investigation allowed to elucidate the fate of these photosensitizers in the reaction. Thanks to their stronger reducing power, it was possible to demonstrate the employability of TADF dyes in artificial photosynthesis, as well. Last, the oxidation of biomass-derived compounds was studied in a photoelectrochemical cell. For this purpose, hematite photoanodes were synthesized in collaboration with Prof. Caramori’s group at the University of Ferrara (Italy) and they were tested in the presence of a redox mediator. In addition to this, the possibility of repurposing a copper(II) water oxidation catalyst for the oxidation of biomass was investigated in collaboration with Prof. Llobet’s group at ICIQ (Tarragona, Spain).

The work presented in this thesis aims to contribute to innovation in the Urban Air Mobility and Delivery sector and represents a solid starting point for air logistics and its future scenarios. The dissertation focuses on modeling, simulation, and control of a formation of multirotor aircraft for cooperative load transportation, with particular attention to environmental sustainability. First, a simulation and test environment is developed to assess technologies for suspended load stabilization. Starting from the mathematical model of two identical multirotors, formation-flight-keeping and collision-avoidance algorithms are analyzed. This approach guarantees both the safety of the vehicles within the formation and that of the payload, which may be made of people in the very near future. Afterwards, a mathematical model for the suspended load is implemented, as well as an active controller for its stabilization. The key focus of this part is represented by both analysis and control of payload oscillatory motion, by thoroughly investigating load kinetic energy decay. At this point, several test cases were introduced, in order to understand which strategy is the most effective and safe in terms of future applications in the field of air logistics.

In this thesis, the study and the simulation of two advanced sensorless speed control techniques for a surface PMSM are presented. The aim is to implement a sensorless control algorithm for a submarine auxiliary propulsion system. This experimental activity is the result of a project collaboration with L3Harris Calzoni, a leader company in A&D systems for naval handling in military field. A Simulink model of the whole electric drive has been developed. Due to the satisfactory results of the simulations, the sensorless control system has been implemented in C code for STM32 environment. Finally, several tests on a real brushless machine have been carried out while the motor was connected to a mechanical load to simulate the real scenario of the final application. All the experimental results have been recorded through a graphical interface software developed at Calzoni.

Scheduling resolution requires the intervention of highly skilled human problemsolvers. This is a very hard and challenging domain because current systems are becoming more and more complex, distributed, interconnected and subject to rapidly changing. A natural Autonomic Computing evolution in relation to Current Computing is to provide systems with Self-Managing ability with a minimum human interference. This paper addresses the resolution of complex scheduling problems using cooperative negotiation. A Multi-Agent Autonomic and Meta-heuristics based framework with self-configuring capabilities is proposed.
