The structure of the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) is modelled with the limited- length-scale k-ε model of Apsley and Castro. Contrary to the standard k-ε model, the limited-length-scale k-ε model imposes a maximum mixing length which is derived from the boundary layer height, for neutral and unstable atmospheric situations, or by Monin-Obukhov length when the atmosphere is stably stratified. The model is first verified reproducing the famous Leipzig wind profile. Then the performance of the model is tested with measurements from FINO-1 platform using sonic anemometers to derive the appropriate maximum mixing length.

In the area of the professional competition, the coach is a fundamental part in the management of a team and more concretely in the game planning. During the competition, the management of the times of pause and times out as well as the conduct of the coach during the same ones is an aspect to analyze in the sports performance. It is for this that it becomes necessary to know some of the behaviors that turn out to be more frequent by the coach and that are more related to a positive performance of his players. For it there has been realized a study of 7 cases of expert coaches in those that his verbal behavior has observed during 4 games. It has focused on the content of the information only to verbal level, on his meaning. The information that have been obtained in the study shows a major quantity of information elaborated during the pauses of the games and a major tactical content with regard to the moments of game. On the other hand, a relation exists between a major number of questions and a minor number of psychological instructions when the score is adverse, whereas in case of victory, a direct relation does not exist with any category. The rest of categories of the speech do not meet influenced directly for the result, for what it is not possible to consider a direct and immediate relation between the coach verbal behavior during the pauses and the result of the game, except in punctual moments.

In previous papers, the type-I intermittent phenomenon with continuous reinjection probability density (RPD) has been extensively studied. However, in this paper type-I intermittency considering discontinuous RPD function in one-dimensional maps is analyzed. To carry out the present study the analytic approximation presented by del Río and Elaskar (Int. J. Bifurc. Chaos 20:1185-1191, 2010) and Elaskar et al. (Physica A. 390:2759-2768, 2011) is extended to consider discontinuous RPD functions. The results of this analysis show that the characteristic relation only depends on the position of the lower bound of reinjection (LBR), therefore for the LBR below the tangent point the relation {Mathematical expression}, where {Mathematical expression} is the control parameter, remains robust regardless the form of the RPD, although the average of the laminar phases {Mathematical expression} can change. Finally, the study of discontinuous RPD for type-I intermittency which occurs in a three-wave truncation model for the derivative nonlinear Schrodinger equation is presented. Neutron diffraction data of DyCrO4 oxide, prepared at 4 GPa and 833 K from the ambient pressure zircon-type, reveal that crystallize with the scheelite-type structure, space group I41/a. Accompanying this structural phase transition induced by pressure the magnetic properties change dramatically from ferromagnetism in the case of zircon to antiferromagnetism for the scheelite polymorph with a T N= 19 K. The analysis of the neutron diffraction data obtained at 1.2 K has been used to determine the magnetic structure of this DyCrO4-scheelite oxide which can be described with a k = [0, 0, 0] as propagation vector, where the Dy and Cr moments are lying in the ab-plane of the scheelite structure. The ordered magnetic moments are 10 µB and 1 µB for Dy+3 and Cr+5 respectively

Recent studies suggested that modification of the membrane contact site of vitamin K-dependent proteins may enhance the membrane affinity and function of members of this protein family. The properties of a factor VII mutant, factor VII-Q10E32, relative to wild-type factor VII (VII, containing P10K32), have been compared. Membrane affinity of VII-Q10E32 was about 20-fold higher than that of wild-type factor VII. The rate of autoactivation VII-Q10E32 with soluble tissue factor was 100-fold faster than wild-type VII and its rate of activation by factor Xa was 30 times greater than that of wild-type factor VII. When combined with soluble tissue factor and phospholipid, activated factor VII-Q10E32 displayed increased activation of factor X. Its coagulant activity was enhanced in all types of plasma and with all sources of tissue factor tested. This difference in activity (maximum 50-fold) was greatest when coagulation conditions were minimal, such as limiting levels of tissue factor and/or phospholipid. Because of its enhanced activity, factor VII-Q10E32 and its derivatives may provide important reagents for research and may be more effective in treatment of bleeding and/or clotting disorders.

Incubation of Na/K-ATPase with ascorbate plus H2O2 produces specific cleavage of the α subunit. Five fragments with intact C termini and complementary fragments with intact N termini were observed. The β subunit is not cleaved. Cleavages depend on the presence of contaminant or added Fe2+ ions, as inferred by suppression of cleavages with nonspecific metal complexants (histidine, EDTA, phenanthroline) or the Fe3+-specific complexant desferrioxamine, or acceleration of cleavages by addition of low concentrations of Fe2+ but not of other heavy metal ions. Na/K-ATPase is inactivated in addition to cleavage, and both effects are insensitive to OH⋅ radical scavengers. Cleavages are sensitive to conformation. In low ionic strength media (E2) or media containing Rb ions [E2(Rb)], cleavage is much faster than in high ionic strength media (E1) or media containing Na ions (E1Na). N-terminal fragments and two C-terminal fragments (N-terminals E214 and V712) have been identified by amino acid sequencing. Approximate positions of other cleavages were determined with specific antibodies. The results suggest that Fe2+ (or Fe3+) ions bind with high affinity at the cytoplasmic surface and catalyze cleavages of peptide bonds close to the Fe2+ (or Fe3+) ion. Thus, cleavage patterns can provide information on spatial organization of the polypeptide chain. We propose that highly conserved regions of the α subunit, within the minor and major cytoplasmic loops, interact in the E2 or E2(Rb) conformations but move apart in the E1 or E1Na conformations. We discuss implications of domain interactions for the energy transduction mechanism. Fe-catalyzed cleavages may be applicable to other P-type pumps or membrane proteins.

Human ether-a-gogo related gene (HERG) K+ channels are key elements in the control of cell excitability in both the cardiovascular and the central nervous systems. For this reason, the possible modulation by reactive oxygen species (ROS) of HERG and other cloned K+ channels expressed in Xenopus oocytes has been explored in the present study. Exposure of Xenopus oocytes to an extracellular solution containing FeSO4 (25–100 μM) and ascorbic acid (50–200 μM) (Fe/Asc) increased both malondialdehyde content and 2′,7′-dichlorofluorescin fluorescence, two indexes of ROS production. Oocyte perfusion with Fe/Asc caused a 50% increase of the outward K+ currents carried by HERG channels, whereas inward currents were not modified. This ROS-induced increase in HERG outward K+ currents was due to a depolarizing shift of the voltage-dependence of channel inactivation, with no change in channel activation. No effect of Fe/Asc was observed on the expressed K+ currents carried by other K+ channels such as bEAG, rDRK1, and mIRK1. Fe/Asc-induced stimulation of HERG outward currents was completely prevented by perfusion of the oocytes with a ROS scavenger mixture (containing 1,000 units/ml catalase, 200 ng/ml superoxide dismutase, and 2 mM mannitol). Furthermore, the scavenger mixture also was able to reduce HERG outward currents in resting conditions by 30%, an effect mimicked by catalase alone. In conclusion, the present results seem to suggest that changes in ROS production can specifically influence K+ currents carried by the HERG channels.
