The purpose or this investigation is primarily to determine the best conditions for plating chromium on aluminum. The work was carried out with the hope of obtaining coherent deposits, and of determining the conditions under which such deposits may be duplicated.

In the deposition of metallic zinc by electrolysis from neutral or acid solution, little difficulty is experienced provided certain impurities are absent from the electrolyte. The use of the process has long been considered as a potential source, patents on the process having been issued as early as 1880. However, the early experimenters failed to realize the importance of impurities in the electrolyte, and for this reason, the process suffered several severe setbacks when commercial plants were built.

Throughout the entire experiment the electrolysis were conducted in an eight-hundred cubic centimeter beaker. An excellent circulation of the solution was assured by means of an electric stirrer, vigorous gas evolution from the anodes, and by means of a regulated feed-discharge system. By means of this balance, solution of the same impurity concentration as that of the electrolyte was fed in the cell just as fast as the discharge was syphoned out.

The formation of monomolecular films is possible because of the action of the heteropolar molecules of certain fatty acids, especially stearic. Under the proper conditions the acid will spread out until a monomolecular film is formed.

In the past few years a great deal of attention has been given to the electrodeposition of alloys. For the main part, this investigation has been of scientific interest only; but in a few instances, such work has attained commercial importance.

Since it is very toxic and accumulates in organisms, particularly in fish, mercury is a very important pollutant and one of the most studies. And this concern over the toxicity and human health risks of mercury has prompted efforts to regulate anthropogenic emissions. As mercury pollution problem is getting increasingly serious, we are curious about how serious this problem will be in the future. What is more, how the climate change in the future will affect the mercury concentration in the atmosphere. So we investigate the impact of climate change on mercury concentration in the atmosphere. We focus on the comparison between the mercury data for year 2000 and for year 2050. The GEOS-Chem model shows that the mercury concentrations for all tracers (1 to 3), elemental mercury (Hg(0)), divalent mercury (Hg(II)) and primary particulate mercury (Hg(P)) have differences between 2000 and 2050 in most regions over the world. From the model results, we can see the climate change from 2000 to 2050 would decrease Hg(0) surface concentration in most of the world. The driving factors of Hg(0) surface concentration changes are natural emissions(ocean and vegetation) and the transformation reactions between Hg(0) and Hg(II). The climate change from 2000 to 2050 would increase Hg(II) surface concentration in most of mid-latitude continental parts of the world while decreasing Hg(II) surface concentration in most of high-latitude part of the world. The driving factors of Hg(II) surface concentration changes is deposition amount change (majorly wet deposition) from 2000 to 2050 and the transformation reactions between Hg(0) and Hg(II). Climate change would increase Hg(P) concentration in most of mid-latitude area of the world and meanwhile decrease Hg(P) concentration in most of high-latitude regions of the world. For the Hg(P) concentration changes, the major driving factor is the deposition amount change (mainly wet deposition) from 2000 to 2050.

In this thesis the purpose was to obtain a good iron deposit from a relatively simple bath. The deposit was to be of good nature and low in Carbon content. Also included is a summary of the uses to which electrolytic iron can be put as well as a summary of work done by other researchers in depositing iron electrolytically.

Iron was electro-deposited from a ferrous chloride bath. Studies were made of deposits formed when current density was varied, and finally when both current density and temperature were changed. An attempt was made to lay the ground work for a long range study of the chloride bath, and to determine the most simple conditions possible for obtaining a smooth, even, and thick deposit.

OBJECTIVES: False-positive results of anti-tissue-transglutaminase (tTG) IgA autoantibodies have been reported in subjects with a genetic risk for celiac disease (CD). The aims of this retrospective study were to assess the prevalence of false-positive tTG titers in patients at risk of CD compared with symptomatic children and to evaluate the influence of age and indication for testing on tTG titers. PATIENTS AND METHODS: All tTG results measured in our institution during a 33-month period were evaluated. Patients with known CD were excluded. Indications for testing were either symptoms suggestive of CD (group 1) or history of being at risk for CD (group 2). Duodenal biopsies were recommended if titers were positive (> or =10 U/mL) and offered if borderline (> or =4 to <10 U/mL). RESULTS: The final analysis included 2056 patients, 1707 belonged to group 1, and 349 to group 2. All 65 patients with positive tTG results underwent biopsy (group 1: 57, group 2: 8). Celiac disease was confirmed in 61 subjects (median titer: 107.8 U/mL, range 12.0-1748 mL, NS between group 1 and 2), whereas 4 had normal histology (10.2-25.2 U/mL). Three out of 16 patients with borderline results underwent biopsy and had normal histology. Borderline titers were more common in group 2 patients (2.6% vs 0.4%, P<0.001). Multiple regression analysis in patients with negative tTG results (n=1975) revealed that titers were independently related to age (P<0.05) and indication for testing (P<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The influence of age and genetic predisposition/risk has to be taken into account when interpreting tTG results.

BACKGROUND: High sugar and fat intakes are known to increase intrahepatocellular lipids (IHCLs) and to cause insulin resistance. High protein intake may facilitate weight loss and improve glucose homeostasis in insulin-resistant patients, but its effects on IHCLs remain unknown. OBJECTIVE: The aim was to assess the effect of high protein intake on high-fat diet-induced IHCL accumulation and insulin sensitivity in healthy young men. DESIGN: Ten volunteers were studied in a crossover design after 4 d of either a hypercaloric high-fat (HF) diet; a hypercaloric high-fat, high-protein (HFHP) diet; or a control, isocaloric (control) diet. IHCLs were measured by (1)H-magnetic resonance spectroscopy, fasting metabolism was measured by indirect calorimetry, insulin sensitivity was measured by hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp, and plasma concentrations were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry; expression of key lipogenic genes was assessed in subcutaneous adipose tissue biopsy specimens. RESULTS: The HF diet increased IHCLs by 90 +/- 26% and plasma tissue-type plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (tPAI-1) by 54 +/- 11% (P < 0.02 for both) and inhibited plasma free fatty acids by 26 +/- 11% and beta-hydroxybutyrate by 61 +/- 27% (P < 0.05 for both). The HFHP diet blunted the increase in IHCLs and normalized plasma beta-hydroxybutyrate and tPAI-1 concentrations. Insulin sensitivity was not altered, whereas the expression of sterol regulatory element-binding protein-1c and key lipogenic genes increased with the HF and HFHP diets (P < 0.02). Bile acid concentrations remained unchanged after the HF diet but increased by 50 +/- 24% after the HFHP diet (P = 0.14). CONCLUSIONS: Protein intake significantly blunts the effects of an HF diet on IHCLs and tPAI-1 through effects presumably exerted at the level of the liver. Protein-induced increases in bile acid concentrations may be involved. This trial was registered at www.clinicaltrials.gov as NCT00523562.

BACKGROUND: Both nutritional and genetic factors are involved in the pathogenesis of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and insulin resistance. OBJECTIVE: The aim was to assess the effects of fructose, a potent stimulator of hepatic de novo lipogenesis, on intrahepatocellular lipids (IHCLs) and insulin sensitivity in healthy offspring of patients with type 2 diabetes (OffT2D)--a subgroup of individuals prone to metabolic disorders. DESIGN: Sixteen male OffT2D and 8 control subjects were studied in a crossover design after either a 7-d isocaloric diet or a hypercaloric high-fructose diet (3.5 g x kg FFM(-1) x d(-1), +35% energy intake). Hepatic and whole-body insulin sensitivity were assessed with a 2-step hyperinsulinemic euglycemic clamp (0.3 and 1.0 mU x kg(-1) x min(-1)), together with 6,6-[2H2]glucose. IHCLs and intramyocellular lipids (IMCLs) were measured by 1H-magnetic resonance spectroscopy. RESULTS: The OffT2D group had significantly (P < 0.05) higher IHCLs (+94%), total triacylglycerols (+35%), and lower whole-body insulin sensitivity (-27%) than did the control group. The high-fructose diet significantly increased IHCLs (control: +76%; OffT2D: +79%), IMCLs (control: +47%; OffT2D: +24%), VLDL-triacylglycerols (control: +51%; OffT2D: +110%), and fasting hepatic glucose output (control: +4%; OffT2D: +5%). Furthermore, the effects of fructose on VLDL-triacylglycerols were higher in the OffT2D group (group x diet interaction: P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: A 7-d high-fructose diet increased ectopic lipid deposition in liver and muscle and fasting VLDL-triacylglycerols and decreased hepatic insulin sensitivity. Fructose-induced alterations in VLDL-triacylglycerols appeared to be of greater magnitude in the OffT2D group, which suggests that these individuals may be more prone to developing dyslipidemia when challenged by high fructose intakes. Calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate (CPPD) crystal deposition disease may manifest clinically as septic fever (40 degrees C), acute pseudogout attack of knee, wrist and shoulders, or as a variety of patterns of chronic inflammatory or degenerative joint disease. The association of pseudogout with fever is less widely recognised and may lead to over-investigation, delay in appropriate treatment and disproportionate costs. We report on a 67-year-old woman with a history of recurrent episodes of fever and polyarthritis every 2 months for the last 3 years. Because of this she was hospitalised several times, finally with suspected culture-negative endocarditis, and was treated for 6 weeks with gentamicin, rifampicin and vancomycin. During this therapy the patient again developed septic fever and acute arthritis of the right wrist. Radiographs of the wrist, knee and symphysis pubis revealed prominent chondrocalcinosis and destructive arthropathy.

Abies alba (fir), a submontane tree from Central European mountains and uplands, is of special interest for palaeoecological and palaeoclimate interpretations due to its sensitivity to air and soil humidity. Its present distribution limit in the uplands of SE Poland is still a matter of debate. In the Holocene fir expanded to Poland very late, but early fir populations are supposed to occur in the Šumava Mts (Czech Republic). The study aims: to estimate pollen thresholds for fir presence/absence in Bohemia (Czech Republic) and Poland on the basis of modified Tauber pollen traps; to use these thresholds for tracing fir presence in two pollen diagrams from Poland (Słone and Bezedna lakes) in the border zone between the Roztocze region (with fir forest stands today) and Polesie (where fir has never played an important role); and to investigate how the percentage presence/absence threshold can be used to trace the occurrence and abundance of fir trees in the Šumava Mts based on the pollen diagrams of Rokytecká slat' and Mrtvý luh. The fir pollen thresholds estimated in terms of PAR (pollen accumulation rates or pollen influx) range from 843 (grains cm− 2 year− 1) (Roztocze) to 61 (Krkonoše) and 49 (Šumava). Percentage thresholds range from 0.3% in Krkonoše where fir trees are not present within 4 km to 22% in fir-dominated woodland of the Roztocze, providing evidence of strong underrepresentation of fir in the pollen deposition. Application of these percentage thresholds to the Słone and Bezedna pollen diagrams indicates that occurrence of fir in the region is possible from 3.5 cal ky BP onwards, though the evidence is not decisive. In the Šumava, a low representation of fir pollen (1–2%) reflecting presence of scattered fir trees was detected as early as ca. 7.0 cal ky BP.
