The recent announcement of the first genome sequence of a brown macroalga, the filamentous Ectocarpus, has been accompanied by a number of companion papers in New Phytologist. In a paper which contributes to this special issue, we classified the core cell cycle components of Ectocarpus, comparing them to the previously studied cell cycle components of diatoms. We then carried out fluorescence microscopy experiments to show that the Ectocarpus cell cycle could be deregulated during early development to give endopolyploid adults. We discuss here how our findings complement recent studies on endopolyploidy in plant and algal systems.

Art History is often seen as a mandatory core course in the curricula of design programs but it is rarely tailored to the needs and goals of such programs. Instead, the traditional chronological organization of lecture topics, invariably beginning with the “Venus of Willendorf” (c. 25,000 BC) is presented in order to impart to the students a supposed holistic “big picture.” This essay outlines the re-structuring of a two-semester first-year faculty-wide introductory art history course, entitled “History of Art and Design,” in the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design at Izmir University of Economics, Izmir, Turkey. The course was re-configured from a conventional chronologically-presented (time-oriented) lecture series to a thematically presented (topic-oriented) lecture series more relevant to the students of the faculty – architecture, interior architecture, graphic design, industrial design, and fashion design students.

A wide tuning range voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) with novel architecture is proposed in this work. The entire circuit consists of a VCO core, a summing circuit, a single-ended to differential (STD) converter and a buffer amplifier. The VCO core oscillates at half the desired frequency and the second harmonic of the VCO core is extracted by the summing circuit, which is then converted to a differential pair by the STD. The entire VCO circuit operates from 58.85 to 70.85 GHz with 20% frequency tuning range. The measured VCO gain is less than 1.6 GHz/V. The measured phase noise at 3 MHz offset is less than -78 dBc/Hz across the entire tuning range. The differential phase error of the output signals is measured by down converting the VCO output signals to low gigahertz frequency using an on-chip mixer. The measured differential phase error is less than 8°. The VCO circuit, which is constructed using 0.35 µm SiGe technology, occupies 770 × 550 µm2 die area and consumes 62 mA under 3.5 V supply.

The quality factor of microwave resonators miniaturised by virtue of periodic loading is assessed. Five X-band resonators in E-plane technology with different miniaturisation factors have been designed to resonate at approximately the same frequency. The loaded quality factor is extracted from the fractional bandwidth and subsequently employed to estimate the unloaded quality factor. The study reveals that the unloaded quality factor drops approximately linearly with the miniaturisation. Subsequently design guidelines for E-plane filters with periodically loaded resonators are provided by means of an example involving a fifth-order filter. Full-wave simulated and experimental results are presented to validate the study.

In this paper, we address the problem of designing multirate codes for a multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) system by restricting the receiver to be a successive decoding and interference cancellation type, when each of the antennas is encoded independently. Furthermore, it is assumed that the receiver knows the instantaneous fading channel states but the transmitter does not have access to them. It is well known that, in theory, minimum-mean-square error (MMSE) based successive decoding of multiple access (in multi-user communications) and MIMO channels achieves the total channel capacity. However, for this scheme to perform optimally, the optimal rates of each antenna (per-antenna rates) must be known at the transmitter. We show that the optimal per-antenna rates at the transmitter can be estimated using only the statistical characteristics of the MIMO channel in time-varying Rayleigh MIMO channel environments. Based on the results, multirate codes are designed using punctured turbo codes for a horizontal coded MIMO system. Simulation results show performances within about one to two dBs of MIMO channel capacity.

Many insect species vary in their degree of foraging specialisation, with many bee species considered polyphagic (polylectic). Wild, non-managed bee species vary in their conservation status, and species-specific biological traits such as foraging specialisation may play an important role in determining variance in population declines. Current agri-environment schemes (AESs) prescribe the introduction of flower seed mixes for agricultural systems to aid the conservation of wild bees. However, the extent to which flower combinations adequately meet bee foraging requirements is poorly known. We quantitatively assessed pollen use and selectivity using two statistical approaches: Bailey's Intervals and Compositional Analysis, in an examplar species, a purportedly polylectic and rare bee, Colletes floralis, across 7 sites through detailed analysis of bee scopal pollen loads and flower abundance. Both approaches provided good congruence, but Compositional Analysis was more robust to small sample sizes. We advocate its use for the quantitative determination of foraging behaviour and dietary preference. Although C. floralis is polylectic, it showed a clear dietary preference for plants within the family Apiaceae. Where Apiaceae was uncommon, the species exploited alternative resources. Other plant families, such as the Apiaceae, could be included, or have their proportion increased in AES seed mixes, to aid the management of C. floralis and potentially other wild solitary bees of conservation concern. © 2011 The Authors. A detailed investigation on planar two dimensional metallodielectric dipole arrays with enhanced near-fields for sensing applications was carried out. Two approaches for enhancing the near-fields and increasing the quality factor were studied. The reactive power stored in the vicinity of the array at resonance increases rapidly with increasing periodicity. Higher quality factors are produced as a result. The excitation of the odd mode in the presence of a perturbation gives rise to a sharp resonance with near-field enhanced by at least an order of magnitude compared to unperturbed arrays. The trade-off between near-field enhancement and thermal losses was also studied, and the effect of supporting dielectric layers on thermal losses and quality factors were examined. Secondary transmissions due to the dielectric alone were found to enhance and reduce cyclically the quality factor as a function of the thickness of the dielectric material. The performance of a perturbed frequency selective surface in sensing nearby materials was investigated. Finally, unperturbed and perturbed arrays working at infrared frequencies were demonstrated experimentally. (C) 2011 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE). [DOI: 10.1117/1.3604785]
