Four terminally blocked tripeptides containing delta-aminovaleric acid residue self-assemble to form supramolecular beta-sheet structures as are revealed from their FT-IR data. Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies of two representative peptides also show that they form parallel beta-sheet structures. Self-aggregation of these beta-sheet forming peptides leads to the formation of fibrillar structures, as is evident from scanning electron microscopic (SEM) and transmission electron microscopic (TEM) images. These peptide fibrils bind to a physiological dye, Congo red and exhibit a typical green-gold birefringence under polarized light, showing close resemblance to neurodegenerative disease causing amyloid fibrils. The terminally protected tripeptide Boc-Ala(1)-Leu(2)-Ala(3)-OMe 1 forms antiparallel hydrogen-bonded dimers of two different conformers in the asymmetric unit and the individual dimers then self-associate to form supramolecular beta-sheet structures in crystals and amyloid-like fibrils in the solid state.

We have described here the self-assembling properties of the synthetic tripeptides Boc-Ala(1)-Aib(2) -Val (3)-OMe 1, BocAla(l)-Aib(2)-Ile(3)-OMe 2 and Boc-Ala(l)-Gly(2)-Val(3)-OMe 3 (Aib=alpha-arnino isobutyric acid, beta-Ala=beta-alanine) which have distorted beta-turn conformations in their respective crystals. These turn-forming tripeptides self-assemble to form supramolecular beta-sheet structures through intermolecular hydrogen bonding and other noncovalent interactions. The scanning electron micrographs of these peptides revealed that these compounds form amyloid-like fibrils, the causative factor for many neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer's disease, Huntington's disease and Prion-related encephalopathies. A new silver-antimony sulphide, [C6H20N4][Ag5Sb3S8], has been synthesised solvothermally in the presence of triethylenetetramine and characterised by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetry and elemental analysis. The compound crystallises in the space group P2(1)/m (a = 6.2778(7), b = 15.8175(16) and c = 12.4617(15) angstrom and beta = 104.561(5)degrees) and adopts a structure in which honeycomb-like sheets of fused six-membered silver-antimony-sulphide rings are linked through Ag-S bonds to form double layers. The idealised structure can be considered to be derived from that of antifluorite and represents a second structure type for the [Ag5Sb3S8](2-) double layer. (c) 2005 Elsevier Inc. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies of two terminally protected tetrapeptides Boc-Ile-Aib-Val-m-ABA-OMe (I) and Boc-Ile-Aib-Phe-m-ABA-OMe (II) (Aib = alpha-aminoisobutyric acid; m-ABA = meta-aminobenzoic acid) reveal that they form continuous H-bonded helices through the association of double-bend (type III and I) building blocks. NMR Studies support the existence of the double-bend (type Ill and I) structures of the peptides in solution also. Field emission scanning electron-microscopic (FE-SEM) and high-resolution transmission electron-microscopic (HR-TEM) images of the peptides exhibit amyloid-like fibrils in the solid state. The Congo red-stained fibrils of peptide I and II, observed between crossed polarizers, show green-gold birefringence, a characteristic of amyloid fibrils.

The structural characterization of subtilisin mesoscale clusters, which were previously shown to induce supramolecular order in biocatalytic self-assembly of Fmocdipeptides, was carried out by synchrotron small-angle X-ray, dynamic, and static light scattering measurements. Subtilisin molecules self-assemble to form supramolecular structures in phosphate buffer solutions. Structural arrangement of subtilisin clusters at 55 degrees Centigrade was found to vary systematically with increasing enzyme concentration. Static light scattering measurements showed the cluster structure to be consistent with a fractal-like arrangement, with fractal dimension varying from 1.8 to 2.6 with increasing concentration for low to moderate enzyme concentrations. This was followed by a structural transition around the enzyme concentration of 0.5 mg mL-1 to more compact structures with significantly slower relaxation dynamics, as evidenced by dynamic light scattering measurements. These concentration-dependent supramolecular enzyme clusters provide tunable templates for biocatalytic self-assembly.

For many climate forcings the dominant response of the extratropical circulation is a latitudinal shift of the tropospheric mid-latitude jets. The magnitude of this response appears to depend on climatological jet latitude in general circulation models (GCMs): lower latitude jets exhibit a larger shift. The reason for this latitude dependence is investigated for a particular forcing, heating of the equatorial stratosphere, which shifts the jet poleward. Spin-up ensembles with a simplified GCM are used to examine the evolution of the response for five different jet structures. These differ in the latitude of the eddy-driven jet, but have similar sub-tropical zonal winds. It is found that lower latitude jets exhibit a larger response due to stronger tropospheric eddy-mean flow feedbacks. A dominant feedback responsible for enhancing the poleward shift is an enhanced equatorward refraction of the eddies, resulting in an increased momentum flux, poleward of the low latitude critical line. The sensitivity of feedback strength to jet structure is associated with differences in the coherence of this behaviour across the spectrum of eddy phase speeds. In the configurations used, the higher latitude jets have a wider range of critical latitude locations. This reduces the coherence of the momentum flux anomalies associated with different phase speeds, with low phase speeds opposing the effect of high phase speeds. This suggests that, for a given sub-tropical zonal wind strength, the latitude of the eddy driven jet affects the feedback through its influence on the width of the region of westerly winds and the range of critical latitudes on the equatorward flank of the jet.

Microporous carbons are important in a wide variety of applications, ranging from pollution control to supercapacitors, yet their structure at the molecular level is poorly understood. Over the years, many structural models have been put forward, but none have been entirely satisfactory in explaining the properties of the carbons. The discovery of fullerenes and fullerene-related structures such as carbon nanotubes gave us a new perspective on the structure of solid carbon, and in 1997 it was suggested that microporous carbon may have a structure related to that of the fullerenes. Recently, evidence in support of such a structure has been obtained using aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy and other techniques. This article describes the development of ideas about the structure of microporous carbon, and reviews the experimental evidence for a fullerene-related structure. Theoretical models of the structural evolution of microporous carbon are summarised, and the use of fullerene-like models to predict the adsorptive properties of microporous carbons are reviewed.

Many modern cities locate in the mountainous areas, like Hong Kong, Phoenix City and Los Angles. It is confirmed in the literature that the mountain wind system developed by differential heating or cooling can be very beneficial in ventilating the city nearby and alleviating the UHI effect. However, the direct interaction of mountain wind with the natural-convection circulation due to heated urban surfaces has not been studied, to our best knowledge. This kind of unique interaction of two kinds of airflow structures under calm and neutral atmospheric environment is investigated in this paper by CFD approach. A physical model comprising a simple mountain and three long building blocks (forming two street canyons) is firstly developed. Different airflow structures are identified within the conditions of different mountain-building height ratios (R=Hm/Hb) by varying building height but fixing mountain height. It is found that the higher ventilation rate in the street canyons is expected in the cases of smaller mountain-building ratios, indicating the stronger natural convection due to increasing heated building surfaces. However, there is the highest air change rate (ACH) in the lowest-building-height case and most of the air is advective into the street canyon through the top open area, highlighting the important role played by the mountain wind. In terms of the ventilation efficiency, it is shown that the smallest R case enjoys the best air change efficiency followed by the highest R case, while the worst ventilative street canyons occur at the middle R case. In the end, a gap across the streets is introduced in the modeling. The existence of the gap can greatly channel the mountain wind and distribute the air into streets nearby. Thus the ACH can be doubled and air quality can be significantly improved.

In this paper we consider the structure of dynamically evolving networks modelling information and activity moving across a large set of vertices. We adopt the communicability concept that generalizes that of centrality which is defined for static networks. We define the primary network structure within the whole as comprising of the most influential vertices (both as senders and receivers of dynamically sequenced activity). We present a methodology based on successive vertex knockouts, up to a very small fraction of the whole primary network, that can characterize the nature of the primary network as being either relatively robust and lattice-like (with redundancies built in) or relatively fragile and tree-like (with sensitivities and few redundancies). We apply these ideas to the analysis of evolving networks derived from fMRI scans of resting human brains. We show that the estimation of performance parameters via the structure tests of the corresponding primary networks is subject to less variability than that observed across a very large population of such scans. Hence the differences within the population are significant.

We report for the first time a detailed procedure for creating a simulation model of energetically stable, folded graphene-like pores and simulation results of CO2/CH4 and CO2/N2 separation using these structures. We show that folding of graphene structures is a very promising method to improve the separation of CO2 from mixtures with CH4 and N2. The separation properties of the analyzed materials are compared with carbon nanotubes having similar diameters or S/V ratio. The presented results have potential importance in the field of CO2 capture and sequestration.

The self-assembled structure of toll-like receptor agonist lipopeptides containing the CSK4 peptide sequence is examined in aqueous solution. A remarkable dependence of morphology on the number of attached hexadecyl lipid chains is demonstrated, with spherical micelle structures for mono- and di-lipidated structures observed, but flexible wormlike micelles for the homologue containing three lipid chains. The distinct modes of assembly may have an important influence on the bioactivity of this class of lipopeptide.

We report the analysis of a uniform sample of 31 light curves of the nova-like variable UU Aqr with eclipse-mapping techniques. The data were combined to derive eclipse maps of the average steady-light component, the long-term brightness changes, and the low- and high-frequency flickering components. The long-term variability responsible for the ""low-brightness`` and ""high-brightness`` states is explained in terms of the response of a viscous disk to changes of 20%-50% in the mass transfer rate from the donor star. Low- and high-frequency flickering maps are dominated by emission from two asymmetric arcs reminiscent of those seen in the outbursting dwarf nova IP Peg, and they are similarly interpreted as manifestations of a tidally induced spiral shock wave in the outer regions of a large accretion disk. The asymmetric arcs are also seen in the map of the steady light aside from the broad brightness distribution of a roughly steady-state disk. The arcs account for 25% of the steady-light flux and are a long-lasting feature in the accretion disk of UU Aqr. We infer an opening angle of 10 degrees +/- 3 degrees for the spiral arcs. The results suggest that the flickering in UU Aqr is caused by turbulence generated after the collision of disk gas with the density-enhanced spiral wave in the accretion disk.

In Drosophila, telomere retrotransposons counterbalance the loss of telomeric DNA. The exceptional mechanism of telomere recovery characterized in Drosophila has not been found in lower dipterans (Nematocera). However, a retroelement resembling a telomere transposon and termed ""RaTART"" has been described in the nematoceran Rhynchosciara americana. In this work, DNA and protein sequence analyses, DNA cloning, and chromosomal localization of probes obtained either by PCR or by screening a genomic library were carried out in order to examine additional features of this retroelement. The analyses performed raise the possibility that RaTART represents a genomic clone composed of distinct repetitive elements, one of which is likely to be responsible for its apparent enrichment at chromosome ends. RaTART sequence in addition allowed to assess a novel subtelomeric region of R. americana chromosomes that was analyzed in this work after subcloning a DNA fragment from a phage insert. It contains a complex repeat that is located in the vicinity of simple and complex tandem repeats characterized previously. Quantification data suggest that the copy number of the repeat is significantly lower than that observed for the ribosomal DNA in the salivary gland of R. americana. A short insertion of the RaTART was identified in the cloned segment, which hybridized preferentially to subtelomeres. Like RaTART, it displays truncated sequences related to distinct retrotransposons, one of which has a conceptual translation product with significant identity with an endonuclease from a lepidopteran retrotransposon. The composite structure of this DNA stretch probably reflects mobile element activity in the subtelomeric region analyzed in this work.

Fractal structures appear in many situations related to the dynamics of conservative as well as dissipative dynamical systems, being a manifestation of chaotic behaviour. In open area-preserving discrete dynamical systems we can find fractal structures in the form of fractal boundaries, associated to escape basins, and even possessing the more general property of Wada. Such systems appear in certain applications in plasma physics, like the magnetic field line behaviour in tokamaks with ergodic limiters. The main purpose of this paper is to show how such fractal structures have observable consequences in terms of the transport properties in the plasma edge of tokamaks, some of which have been experimentally verified. We emphasize the role of the fractal structures in the understanding of mesoscale phenomena in plasmas, such as electromagnetic turbulence.
