Originally named University House,the third structure on the Modesto A. Maidique Campus (MMC) (formerly University Park) was completed on June 15th, 1974. The building was designed by Anson/Grove/Haack & Associates and constructed by McDevitt & Street of Palm Beach. The building's first dedication took place on May 13th, 1975. Toward equity through participation in Modeling Instruction in introductory university physics

We report the results of a five year evaluation of the reform of introductory calculus-based physics by implementation of Modeling Instruction (MI) at Florida International University (FIU), a Hispanic-serving institution. MI is described in the context of FIU���s overall effort to enhance student participation in physics and science broadly. Our analysis of MI from a ���participationist��� perspective on learning identifies aspects of MI including conceptually based instruction, culturally sensitive instruction, and cooperative group learning, which are consistent with research on supporting equitable learning and participation by students historically under-represented in physics (i.e., Black, Hispanic, women). This study uses markers of conceptual understanding as measured by the Force Concept Inventory (FCI) and odds of success as measured by the ratio of students completing introductory physics and earning a passing grade (i.e., C��� or better) by students historically under-represented in physics to reflect equity and participation in introductory physics. A comparison of upper division performance of community college transfer students to native university students

The purpose of this study was to examine the hypothesis that no differences existed in the upper division performance of academically excellent community college transfer students when compared to native university students. The relationship of enrollment patterns such as skipped terms, dropped terms, summer session utilization, college of major, credits attempted, credits received, test scores, and current status were also studied.^ The data were collected through a hand analysis of 673 student transcripts which provided the information for a database designed specifically for this study. The subjects were 229 transfers from Miami-Dade Community College and 444 natives from Florida International University. The students all began their studies in the lower division in the Fall term of 1982, 1983 or 1984 and eventually transferred to the upper division at FIU. This longitudinal study followed the upper division performance and enrollment patterns through the Spring term of 1991.^ Data analysis included chi-square for all categorical and numerical variables; t-tests were performed for the numerical variables. Correlation coefficients, Two-Way Analysis of Variance and Three-Way Crosstabulations were also used when indicated. There were significant differences among the upper division performance of community college transfer students and native university students for the graduation rate and the GPA range. A significant difference was also found between the math and essay CLAST scores, number of summer terms utilized, number of terms to graduation, current enrollment status, and credits attempted and received for the groups. ^

Campus Design: Locating a new center of international studies

FIU's campus master plan should portray an overall concept of the University's vision. Its design should represent a distinctive sense of institutional purpose. Its architecture should support the campus design in the realization of an ideal academic environment. The present master plan of Florida International University (FIU) offers neither a clear typology of architectural elements nor adequate relationships and connections between buildings. FIU needs to enhance its master plan with an architectural and urban vocabulary that creates a better environment. This thesis will examine FIU's present master plan, explaining the history of its development. Further, it will critically examine the quality of the campus, highlighting the success and failure of its various parts. The unrealized potential of the campus' original vision will be juxtaposed to the built reality. In addition, FlU's planning strategies will be parallel with the planning of several master plans of American universities. Finally, this thesis will propose a set of criteria for the inclusion of a new building in the campus master plan. The Center of International Study will be the catalyst that would bring into focus the university's vision. As a means to prove the validity of these criteria, a new location for the center of international studies will be selected, and a schematic architectural proposal will be made.

Relations Between Acculturation And Alcohol Use Among International Students

In the current study, 226 international students attending Florida International University responded to an Web-based questionnaire that assessed self-reported scores for: acculturation, acculturative stress, alcohol use patterns, perceived peer alcohol use, and perceived injunctive social norms for alcohol use. The purpose of the study was to evaluate structural relations among this set of variables using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) via AMOS 17.0. The results of SEM analyses documented acceptable fit of a model which hypothesized that relations between acculturation and alcohol use variables are mediated partially by acculturative stress, perceived peer alcohol use, and perceived injunctive social norms. While significant path coefficients were documented for paths between (a) acculturation and acculturative stress and (b) acculturative stress and alcohol use, the coefficients had negative signs, contrary to existing studies investigating these relations among immigrant youth. While paths between (a) perceived peer alcohol use or (b) perceived injunctive social norms and participants��� alcohol use were significant, path coefficients between acculturation and either (a) perceived peer alcohol use or (b) perceived injunctive social norms were not statistically significant. In addition, multiple-group comparisons suggested that social support had a significant moderating influence on several significant paths in the structural model. Specifically, international students reporting higher social support reported lower scores for acculturative stress and alcohol use, in contrast to their counterparts who reported lower scores for social support.
