Optical differentiators constitute a basic device for analog all-optical signal processing [1]. Fiber grating approaches, both fiber Bragg grating (FBG) and long period grating (LPG), constitute an attractive solution because of their low cost, low insertion losses, and full compatibility with fiber optic systems. A first order differentiator LPG approach was proposed and demonstrated in [2], but FBGs may be preferred in applications with a bandwidth up to few nm because of the extreme sensitivity of LPGs to environmental fluctuations [3]. Several FBG approaches have been proposed in [3-6], requiring one or more additional optical elements to create a first-order differentiator. A very simple, single optical element FBG approach was proposed in [7] for first order differentiation, applying the well-known logarithmic Hilbert transform relation of the amplitude and phase of an FBG in transmission [8]. Using this relationship in the design process, it was theoretically and numerically demonstrated that a single FBG in transmission can be designed to simultaneously approach the amplitude and phase of a first-order differentiator spectral response, without need of any additional elements. © 2013 IEEE.

In this paper, we explore theoretically a novel amplifier scheme, that combines second order bidirectional pumping and fiber Bragg grating reflectors to achieve quasi-lossless transmission over long spans. The scheme is shown to significantly reduce the signal power variation over the span as compared to commonly used schemes with the same number of pump sources. It is concluded that it can be practical to analyze a simplified system of three equations, obtained by neglecting noise terms, that would allow us to better understand the physical mechanisms and to find analytical estimates for the required pump power or the power variations along the fibre span

A compact high-power yellow-green continuous wave (CW) laser source based on second-harmonic generation (SHG) in a 5% MgO doped periodically poled congruent lithium niobate (PPLN) waveguide crystal pumped by a quantum-dot fiber Bragg grating (QD-FBG) laser diode is demonstrated. A frequency-doubled power of 90.11 mW at the wavelength of 560.68 nm with a conversion efficiency of 52.4% is reported. To the best of our knowledge, this represents the highest output power and conversion efficiency achieved to date in this spectral region from a diode-pumped PPLN waveguide crystal, which could prove extremely valuable for the deployment of such a source in a wide range of biomedical applications.

The use of the Type I and Type II scheme, first introduced and used by fiber Bragg grating researchers, has recently been adopted by the ultrafast laser direct-write photonics community to classify the physical geometry of waveguides written into glasses and crystals. This has created confusion between the fiber Bragg grating and direct-write photonics community. Here we propose a return to the original basis of the classification based on the characteristics of the material modification rather than the physical geometry of the waveguide.

We propose and demonstrate a microfiber Fabry-Perot interferometer (MFPI) fabricated by taper-drawing microfiber at the center of a uniform fiber Bragg grating (FBG). The MFPI employing the two separated sections of FBG as reflectors and a length of microfiber as its cavity is derived. Theoretic study shows that the reflection spectrum of such MFPI is consisted of two parts-interference fringes induced by multi-beam interference and reflection spectrum envelope induced by FBGs. Temperature affects both interference fringes and reflection wavelength of FBGs while ambient refractive index (RI) only influences the interference fringes, i.e., MFPI has different response to temperature and RI. Therefore, MFPI for simultaneous sensing of RI and temperature is experimentally demonstrated by tracking a reflection peak of interference fringes and the Bragg wavelength of the FBGs, which are respectively assisted by frequency domain processing and Gaussian fitting of the optical spectrum. Consequently, wavelength measurement resolution of 0.5 pm is realized. © 1983-2012 IEEE.

Graphene-based silica fiber-optic sensors, with high sensitivity, fast response, and low cost, have shown great promise for gas sensing applications. In this letter, by covering a monolayer of p-doped graphene on a D-shaped microstructured polymer fiber Bragg grating (FBG), we propose and demonstrate a novel biochemical probe sensor, the graphene-based D-shaped polymer FBG (GDPFBG). Due to the graphene-based surface evanescent field enhancement, this sensor shows high sensitivity to detect surrounding biochemical parameters. By monitoring the Bragg peak locations of the GDPFBG online, human erythrocyte (red blood cell) solutions with different cellular concentrations ranging from 0 to 104 ppm were detected precisely, with the maximum resolution of sub-ppm. Such a sensor is structurally compact, is clinically acceptable, and provides good recoverability, offering a state-of-the-art polymer-fiber-based sensing platform for highly sensitive in situ and in vivo cell detection applications.

Over the last decade advances and innovations from Silicon Photonics technology were observed in the telecommunications and computing industries. Nonlinear thermo-mechanical properties of advanced polymers are crucial to accurate prediction of the process induced warpage and residual stress of electronics packages. The Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor based method is advanced and implemented to determine temperature and time dependent nonlinear properties. The FBG sensor is embedded in the center of the cylindrical specimen, which deforms together with the specimen. The strains of the specimen at different loading conditions are monitored by the FBG sensor. Two main sources of the warpage are considered: curing induced warpage and coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) mismatch induced warpage. The effective chemical shrinkage and the equilibrium modulus are needed for the curing induced warpage prediction. Considering various polymeric materials used in microelectronic packages, unique curing setups and procedures are developed for elastomers (extremely low modulus, medium viscosity, room temperature curing), underfill materials (medium modulus, low viscosity, high temperature curing), and epoxy molding compound (EMC: high modulus, high viscosity, high temperature pressure curing), most notably, (1) zero-constraint mold for elastomers; (2) a two-stage curing procedure for underfill materials and (3) an air-cylinder based novel setup for EMC. For the CTE mismatch induced warpage, the temperature dependent CTE and the comprehensive viscoelastic properties are measured. The cured cylindrical specimen with a FBG sensor embedded in the center is further used for viscoelastic property measurements. A uni-axial compressive loading is applied to the specimen to measure the time dependent Young’s modulus. The test is repeated from room temperature to the reflow temperature to capture the time-temperature dependent Young’s modulus. A separate high pressure system is developed for the bulk modulus measurement. The time temperature dependent bulk modulus is measured at the same temperatures as the Young’s modulus. The master curve of the Young’s modulus and bulk modulus of the EMC is created and a single set of the shift factors is determined from the time temperature superposition. The supplementary experiments are conducted to verify the validity of the assumptions associated with the linear viscoelasticity. The measured time-temperature dependent properties are further verified by a shadow moiré and Twyman/Green test.
