A unified and general vision of different space-time processors is presented. Many popular receivers can beaccomodated, like V-RAKE receivers, weighted V-RAKE, or spatial narrowband beamforming. By makingappropriate assumptions on the space/time characteristic of the interference it is possible to enhance theperformance of the receiver through spatial/temporal pre-processors. These receivers will be tested in the FDDmode of UTRA.

Cooperative transmission can be seen as a "virtual" MIMO system, where themultiple transmit antennas are in fact implemented distributed by the antennas both at the source and the relay terminal. Depending on the system design, diversity/multiplexing gainsare achievable. This design involves the definition of the type of retransmission (incrementalredundancy, repetition coding), the design of the distributed space-time codes, the errorcorrecting scheme, the operation of the relay (decode&forward or amplify&forward) and thenumber of antennas at each terminal. Proposed schemes are evaluated in different conditionsin combination with forward error correcting codes (FEC), both for linear and near-optimum(sphere decoder) receivers, for its possible implementation in downlink high speed packetservices of cellular networks. Results show the benefits of coded cooperation over directtransmission in terms of increased throughput. It is shown that multiplexing gains areobserved even if the mobile station features a single antenna, provided that cell wide reuse of the relay radio resource is possible.

In robotics, having a 3D representation of the environment where a robot is working can be very useful. In real-life scenarios, this environment is constantly changing for example by human interaction, external agents or by the robot itself. Thus, the representation needs to be constantly updated and extended to account for these dynamic scene changes. In this work we face the problem of representing the scene where a robot is acting. Moreover, we ought to improve this representation by reusing the information obtained in previous scenes. Our goal is to build a method to represent a scene and to update it while changes are produced. In order to achieve that, different aspects of computer vision such as space representation or feature tracking are discussed

PURPOSE: Drug delivery to treat diseases of the posterior segment of the eye, such as choroidal neovascularization and its complications, is hampered by poor intraocular penetration and rapid elimination of the drug from the eye. The purpose of this study was to investigate the feasibility and tolerance of suprachoroidal injections of poly(ortho ester) (POE), a bioerodible and biocompatible polymer, as a biomaterial potentially useful for development of sustained drug delivery systems. METHODS: After tunnelization of the sclera, different formulations based on POE were injected (100 microL) into the suprachoroidal space of pigmented rabbits and compared with 1% sodium hyaluronate. Follow-up consisted of fundus observations, echography, fluorescein angiography, and histologic analysis over 3 weeks. RESULTS: After injection, POE spread in the suprachoroidal space at the posterior pole. It was well tolerated and progressively disappeared from the site of injection without sequelae. No bleeding or retinal detachment occurred. Echographic pictures showed that the material was present in the suprachoroidal space for 3 weeks. Angiography revealed minor pigment irregularities at the site of injection, but no retinal edema or necrosis. Histology showed that POE was well tolerated in the choroid. CONCLUSIONS: POE suprachoroidal injections, an easy, controllable, and reproducible procedure, were well tolerated in the rabbit eye. POE appears to be a promising biomaterial to deliver drugs focally to the choroid and the retina.

Most corporate codes of conduct and multi-stakeholder sustainability standards guarantee workers' rights to freedom of association and collective bargaining, but many authors are sceptical about the concrete impact of codes and standards of this kind. In this paper we use Hancher and Moran's (1998) concept of 'regulatory space' to assess the potential of private transnational regulation to support the growth of trade union membership and collective bargaining relationships, drawing on some preliminary case study results from a project on the impact of the International Finance Corporation's (IFC) social conditionality on worker organization and social dialogue. One of the major effects of neoliberal economic and industrial policy has been the routine exclusion of workers' organizations from regulatory processes on the grounds that they introduce inappropriate 'political' motives into what ought to be technical decision-making processes. This, rather than any direct attack on their capacity to take action, is what seems best to explain the global decline in union influence (Cradden 2004; Howell 2007; Howe 2012). The evidence we present in the paper suggests that private labour regulation may under certain conditions contribute to a reversal of this tendency, re-establishing the legitimacy of workers' organizations within regulatory processes and by extension the legitimacy of their use of economic and social power. We argue that guarantees of freedom of association and bargaining rights within private regulation schemes are effective to the extent that they can be used by workers' organizations in support of a claim for access to the regulatory space within which the terms and conditions of the employment relationship are determined. Our case study evidence shows that certain trade unions in East Africa have indeed been able to use IFC and other private regulation schemes as levers to win recognition from employers and to establish collective bargaining relationships. Although they did not attempt to use formal procedures to make a claim for the enforcement of freedom of association rights on behalf of their members, the unions did use enterprises' adherence to private regulation schemes as a normative point of reference in argument and political exchange about worker representation. For these unions, the regulation was a useful addition to the range of arguments that they could deploy as means to justify their demand for recognition by employers. By contrast, the private regulation that helps workers' organizations to win access to regulatory processes does little to ensure that they are able to participate meaningfully, whether in terms of technical capacity or of their ability to mobilize social power as a counterweight to the economic power of employers. To the extent that our East African unions were able to make an impact on terms and conditions of employment via their participation in regulatory space it was solely on the basis of their own capacities and resources and the application of national labour law.

Breathing-induced bulk motion of the myocardium during data acquisition may cause severe image artifacts in coronary magnetic resonance angiography (MRA). Current motion compensation strategies include breath-holding or free-breathing MR navigator gating and tracking techniques. Navigator-based techniques have been further refined by the applications of sophisticated 2D k-space reordering techniques. A further improvement in image quality and a reduction of relative scanning duration may be expected from a 3D k-space reordering scheme. Therefore, a 3D k-space reordered acquisition scheme including a 3D navigator gated and corrected segmented k-space gradient echo imaging sequence for coronary MRA was implemented. This new zonal motion-adapted acquisition and reordering technique (ZMART) was developed on the basis of a numerical simulation of the Bloch equations. The technique was implemented on a commercial 1.5T MR system, and first phantom and in vivo experiments were performed. Consistent with the results of the theoretical findings, the results obtained in the phantom studies demonstrate a significant reduction of motion artifacts when compared to conventional (non-k-space reordered) gating techniques. Depuis le séminaire H. Cartan de 1954-55, il est bien connu que l'on peut trouver des éléments de torsion arbitrairement grande dans l'homologie entière des espaces d'Eilenberg-MacLane K(G,n) où G est un groupe abélien non trivial et n>1. L'objectif majeur de ce travail est d'étendre ce résultat à des H-espaces possédant plus d'un groupe d'homotopie non trivial. Dans le but de contrôler précisément le résultat de H. Cartan, on commence par étudier la dualité entre l'homologie et la cohomologie des espaces d'Eilenberg-MacLane 2-locaux de type fini. On parvient ainsi à raffiner quelques résultats qui découlent des calculs de H. Cartan. Le résultat principal de ce travail peut être formulé comme suit. Soit X un H-espace ne possédant que deux groupes d'homotopie non triviaux, tous deux finis et de 2-torsion. Alors X n'admet pas d'exposant pour son groupe gradué d'homologie entière réduite. On construit une large classe d'espaces pour laquelle ce résultat n'est qu'une conséquence d'une caractéristique topologique, à savoir l'existence d'un rétract faible X K(G,n) pour un certain groupe abélien G et n>1. On généralise également notre résultat principal à des espaces plus compliqués en utilisant la suite spectrale d'Eilenberg-Moore ainsi que des méthodes analytiques faisant apparaître les nombres de Betti et leur comportement asymptotique. Finalement, on conjecture que les espaces qui ne possédent qu'un nombre fini de groupes d'homotopie non triviaux n'admettent pas d'exposant homologique. Ce travail contient par ailleurs la présentation de la « machine d'Eilenberg-MacLane », un programme C++ conçu pour calculer explicitement les groupes d'homologie entière des espaces d'Eilenberg-MacLane. <br/><br/>By the work of H. Cartan, it is well known that one can find elements of arbitrarilly high torsion in the integral (co)homology groups of an Eilenberg-MacLane space K(G,n), where G is a non-trivial abelian group and n>1. The main goal of this work is to extend this result to H-spaces having more than one non-trivial homotopy groups. In order to have an accurate hold on H. Cartan's result, we start by studying the duality between homology and cohomology of 2-local Eilenberg-MacLane spaces of finite type. This leads us to some improvements of H. Cartan's methods in this particular case. Our main result can be stated as follows. Let X be an H-space with two non-vanishing finite 2-torsion homotopy groups. Then X does not admit any exponent for its reduced integral graded (co)homology group. We construct a wide class of examples for which this result is a simple consequence of a topological feature, namely the existence of a weak retract X K(G,n) for some abelian group G and n>1. We also generalize our main result to more complicated stable two stage Postnikov systems, using the Eilenberg-Moore spectral sequence and analytic methods involving Betti numbers and their asymptotic behaviour. Finally, we investigate some guesses on the non-existence of homology exponents for finite Postnikov towers. We conjecture that Postnikov pieces do not admit any (co)homology exponent. This work also includes the presentation of the "Eilenberg-MacLane machine", a C++ program designed to compute explicitely all integral homology groups of Eilenberg-MacLane spaces. <br/><br/>Il est toujours difficile pour un mathématicien de parler de son travail. La difficulté réside dans le fait que les objets qu'il étudie sont abstraits. On rencontre assez rarement un espace vectoriel, une catégorie abélienne ou une transformée de Laplace au coin de la rue ! Cependant, même si les objets mathématiques sont difficiles à cerner pour un non-mathématicien, les méthodes pour les étudier sont essentiellement les mêmes que celles utilisées dans les autres disciplines scientifiques. On décortique les objets complexes en composantes plus simples à étudier. On dresse la liste des propriétés des objets mathématiques, puis on les classe en formant des familles d'objets partageant un caractère commun. On cherche des façons différentes, mais équivalentes, de formuler un problème. Etc. Mon travail concerne le domaine mathématique de la topologie algébrique. Le but ultime de cette discipline est de parvenir à classifier tous les espaces topologiques en faisant usage de l'algèbre. Cette activité est comparable à celle d'un ornithologue (topologue) qui étudierait les oiseaux (les espaces topologiques) par exemple à l'aide de jumelles (l'algèbre). S'il voit un oiseau de petite taille, arboricole, chanteur et bâtisseur de nids, pourvu de pattes à quatre doigts, dont trois en avant et un, muni d'une forte griffe, en arrière, alors il en déduira à coup sûr que c'est un passereau. Il lui restera encore à déterminer si c'est un moineau, un merle ou un rossignol. Considérons ci-dessous quelques exemples d'espaces topologiques: a) un cube creux, b) une sphère et c) un tore creux (c.-à-d. une chambre à air). a) b) c) Si toute personne normalement constituée perçoit ici trois figures différentes, le topologue, lui, n'en voit que deux ! De son point de vue, le cube et la sphère ne sont pas différents puisque ils sont homéomorphes: on peut transformer l'un en l'autre de façon continue (il suffirait de souffler dans le cube pour obtenir la sphère). Par contre, la sphère et le tore ne sont pas homéomorphes: triturez la sphère de toutes les façons (sans la déchirer), jamais vous n'obtiendrez le tore. Il existe un infinité d'espaces topologiques et, contrairement à ce que l'on serait naïvement tenté de croire, déterminer si deux d'entre eux sont homéomorphes est très difficile en général. Pour essayer de résoudre ce problème, les topologues ont eu l'idée de faire intervenir l'algèbre dans leurs raisonnements. Ce fut la naissance de la théorie de l'homotopie. Il s'agit, suivant une recette bien particulière, d'associer à tout espace topologique une infinité de ce que les algébristes appellent des groupes. Les groupes ainsi obtenus sont appelés groupes d'homotopie de l'espace topologique. Les mathématiciens ont commencé par montrer que deux espaces topologiques qui sont homéomorphes (par exemple le cube et la sphère) ont les même groupes d'homotopie. On parle alors d'invariants (les groupes d'homotopie sont bien invariants relativement à des espaces topologiques qui sont homéomorphes). Par conséquent, deux espaces topologiques qui n'ont pas les mêmes groupes d'homotopie ne peuvent en aucun cas être homéomorphes. C'est là un excellent moyen de classer les espaces topologiques (pensez à l'ornithologue qui observe les pattes des oiseaux pour déterminer s'il a affaire à un passereau ou non). Mon travail porte sur les espaces topologiques qui n'ont qu'un nombre fini de groupes d'homotopie non nuls. De tels espaces sont appelés des tours de Postnikov finies. On y étudie leurs groupes de cohomologie entière, une autre famille d'invariants, à l'instar des groupes d'homotopie. On mesure d'une certaine manière la taille d'un groupe de cohomologie à l'aide de la notion d'exposant; ainsi, un groupe de cohomologie possédant un exposant est relativement petit. L'un des résultats principaux de ce travail porte sur une étude de la taille des groupes de cohomologie des tours de Postnikov finies. Il s'agit du théorème suivant: un H-espace topologique 1-connexe 2-local et de type fini qui ne possède qu'un ou deux groupes d'homotopie non nuls n'a pas d'exposant pour son groupe gradué de cohomologie entière réduite. S'il fallait interpréter qualitativement ce résultat, on pourrait dire que plus un espace est petit du point de vue de la cohomologie (c.-à-d. s'il possède un exposant cohomologique), plus il est intéressant du point de vue de l'homotopie (c.-à-d. il aura plus de deux groupes d'homotopie non nuls). Il ressort de mon travail que de tels espaces sont très intéressants dans le sens où ils peuvent avoir une infinité de groupes d'homotopie non nuls. Jean-Pierre Serre, médaillé Fields en 1954, a montré que toutes les sphères de dimension >1 ont une infinité de groupes d'homotopie non nuls. Des espaces avec un exposant cohomologique aux sphères, il n'y a qu'un pas à franchir...

Abstract The main objective of this work is to show how the choice of the temporal dimension and of the spatial structure of the population influences an artificial evolutionary process. In the field of Artificial Evolution we can observe a common trend in synchronously evolv¬ing panmictic populations, i.e., populations in which any individual can be recombined with any other individual. Already in the '90s, the works of Spiessens and Manderick, Sarma and De Jong, and Gorges-Schleuter have pointed out that, if a population is struc¬tured according to a mono- or bi-dimensional regular lattice, the evolutionary process shows a different dynamic with respect to the panmictic case. In particular, Sarma and De Jong have studied the selection pressure (i.e., the diffusion of a best individual when the only selection operator is active) induced by a regular bi-dimensional structure of the population, proposing a logistic modeling of the selection pressure curves. This model supposes that the diffusion of a best individual in a population follows an exponential law. We show that such a model is inadequate to describe the process, since the growth speed must be quadratic or sub-quadratic in the case of a bi-dimensional regular lattice. New linear and sub-quadratic models are proposed for modeling the selection pressure curves in, respectively, mono- and bi-dimensional regu¬lar structures. These models are extended to describe the process when asynchronous evolutions are employed. Different dynamics of the populations imply different search strategies of the resulting algorithm, when the evolutionary process is used to solve optimisation problems. A benchmark of both discrete and continuous test problems is used to study the search characteristics of the different topologies and updates of the populations. In the last decade, the pioneering studies of Watts and Strogatz have shown that most real networks, both in the biological and sociological worlds as well as in man-made structures, have mathematical properties that set them apart from regular and random structures. In particular, they introduced the concepts of small-world graphs, and they showed that this new family of structures has interesting computing capabilities. Populations structured according to these new topologies are proposed, and their evolutionary dynamics are studied and modeled. We also propose asynchronous evolutions for these structures, and the resulting evolutionary behaviors are investigated. Many man-made networks have grown, and are still growing incrementally, and explanations have been proposed for their actual shape, such as Albert and Barabasi's preferential attachment growth rule. However, many actual networks seem to have undergone some kind of Darwinian variation and selection. Thus, how these networks might have come to be selected is an interesting yet unanswered question. In the last part of this work, we show how a simple evolutionary algorithm can enable the emrgence o these kinds of structures for two prototypical problems of the automata networks world, the majority classification and the synchronisation problems. Synopsis L'objectif principal de ce travail est de montrer l'influence du choix de la dimension temporelle et de la structure spatiale d'une population sur un processus évolutionnaire artificiel. Dans le domaine de l'Evolution Artificielle on peut observer une tendence à évoluer d'une façon synchrone des populations panmictiques, où chaque individu peut être récombiné avec tout autre individu dans la population. Déjà dans les année '90, Spiessens et Manderick, Sarma et De Jong, et Gorges-Schleuter ont observé que, si une population possède une structure régulière mono- ou bi-dimensionnelle, le processus évolutionnaire montre une dynamique différente de celle d'une population panmictique. En particulier, Sarma et De Jong ont étudié la pression de sélection (c-à-d la diffusion d'un individu optimal quand seul l'opérateur de sélection est actif) induite par une structure régulière bi-dimensionnelle de la population, proposant une modélisation logistique des courbes de pression de sélection. Ce modèle suppose que la diffusion d'un individu optimal suit une loi exponentielle. On montre que ce modèle est inadéquat pour décrire ce phénomène, étant donné que la vitesse de croissance doit obéir à une loi quadratique ou sous-quadratique dans le cas d'une structure régulière bi-dimensionnelle. De nouveaux modèles linéaires et sous-quadratique sont proposés pour des structures mono- et bi-dimensionnelles. Ces modèles sont étendus pour décrire des processus évolutionnaires asynchrones. Différentes dynamiques de la population impliquent strategies différentes de recherche de l'algorithme résultant lorsque le processus évolutionnaire est utilisé pour résoudre des problèmes d'optimisation. Un ensemble de problèmes discrets et continus est utilisé pour étudier les charactéristiques de recherche des différentes topologies et mises à jour des populations. Ces dernières années, les études de Watts et Strogatz ont montré que beaucoup de réseaux, aussi bien dans les mondes biologiques et sociologiques que dans les structures produites par l'homme, ont des propriétés mathématiques qui les séparent à la fois des structures régulières et des structures aléatoires. En particulier, ils ont introduit la notion de graphe sm,all-world et ont montré que cette nouvelle famille de structures possède des intéressantes propriétés dynamiques. Des populations ayant ces nouvelles topologies sont proposés, et leurs dynamiques évolutionnaires sont étudiées et modélisées. Pour des populations ayant ces structures, des méthodes d'évolution asynchrone sont proposées, et la dynamique résultante est étudiée. Beaucoup de réseaux produits par l'homme se sont formés d'une façon incrémentale, et des explications pour leur forme actuelle ont été proposées, comme le preferential attachment de Albert et Barabàsi. Toutefois, beaucoup de réseaux existants doivent être le produit d'un processus de variation et sélection darwiniennes. Ainsi, la façon dont ces structures ont pu être sélectionnées est une question intéressante restée sans réponse. Dans la dernière partie de ce travail, on montre comment un simple processus évolutif artificiel permet à ce type de topologies d'émerger dans le cas de deux problèmes prototypiques des réseaux d'automates, les tâches de densité et de synchronisation.

This thesis is about detection of local image features. The research topic belongs to the wider area of object detection, which is a machine vision and pattern recognition problem where an object must be detected (located) in an image. State-of-the-art object detection methods often divide the problem into separate interest point detection and local image description steps, but in this thesis a different technique is used, leading to higher quality image features which enable more precise localization. Instead of using interest point detection the landmark positions are marked manually. Therefore, the quality of the image features is not limited by the interest point detection phase and the learning of image features is simplified. The approach combines both interest point detection and local description into one phase for detection. Computational efficiency of the descriptor is therefore important, leaving out many of the commonly used descriptors as unsuitably heavy. Multiresolution Gabor features has been the main descriptor in this thesis and improving their efficiency is a significant part. Actual image features are formed from descriptors by using a classifierwhich can then recognize similar looking patches in new images. The main classifier is based on Gaussian mixture models. Classifiers are used in one-class classifier configuration where there are only positive training samples without explicit background class. The local image feature detection method has been tested with two freely available face detection databases and a proprietary license plate database. The localization performance was very good in these experiments. Other applications applying the same under-lying techniques are also presented, including object categorization and fault detection.

Perceiving the world visually is a basic act for humans, but for computers it is still an unsolved problem. The variability present innatural environments is an obstacle for effective computer vision. The goal of invariant object recognition is to recognise objects in a digital image despite variations in, for example, pose, lighting or occlusion. In this study, invariant object recognition is considered from the viewpoint of feature extraction. Thedifferences between local and global features are studied with emphasis on Hough transform and Gabor filtering based feature extraction. The methods are examined with respect to four capabilities: generality, invariance, stability, and efficiency. Invariant features are presented using both Hough transform and Gabor filtering. A modified Hough transform technique is also presented where the distortion tolerance is increased by incorporating local information. In addition, methods for decreasing the computational costs of the Hough transform employing parallel processing and local information are introduced.

This paper aims at detecting spatio-temporal clustering in fire sequences using space?time scan statistics, a powerful statistical framework for the analysis of point processes. The methodology is applied to active fire detection in the state of Florida (US) identified by MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) during the period 2003?06. Results of the present study show that statistically significant clusters can be detected and localized in specific areas and periods of the year. Three out of the five most likely clusters detected for the entire frame period are localized in the north of the state, and they cover forest areas; the other two clusters cover a large zone in the south, corresponding to agricultural land and the prairies in the Everglades. In order to analyze if the wildfires recur each year during the same period, the analyses have been performed separately for the 4 years: it emerges that clusters of forest fires are more frequent in hot seasons (spring and summer), while in the southern areas, they are widely present during the whole year. The recognition of overdensities of events and the ability to locate them in space and in time can help in supporting fire management and focussing on prevention measures.
