A sample of 21 light duty vehicles powered by Otto cycle engines were tested on a chassis dynamometer to measure the exhaust emissions of nitrous oxide (N2O). The tests were performed at the Vehicle Emission Laboratory of CETESB (Environmental Company of the State of Sao Paulo) using the US-FTP-75 (Federal Test Procedure) driving cycle. The sample tested included passenger cars running on three types of fuels used in Brazil: gasohol, ethanol and CNG. The measurement of N2O was made using two methods: Non Dispersive InfraRed (NDIR) analyzer and Fourier Transform InfraRed spectroscopy (FTIR). Measurements of regulated pollutants were also made in order to establish correlations between N2O and NOx. The average N2O emission factors obtained by the NDIR method was 78 +/- 41 mg.km(-1) for vehicles running with gasohol, 73 +/- 45 mg.km(-1) for ethanol vehicles and 171 +/- 69 mg.km(-1) for CNG vehicles. Seventeen results using the FTIR method were also obtained. For gasohol vehicles the results showed a good agreement between the two methods, with an average emission factor of 68 +/- 41 mg.km(-1). The FTIR measurement results of N2O for ethanol and CNG vehicles were much lower than those obtained by the NDIR method. The emission factors were 17 +/- 10 mg.km(-1) and 33 +/- 17 mg.km(-1), respectively, possibly because of the interference of water vapor (present at a higher concentration in the exhaust gases of these vehicles) on measurements by the NDIR method.

Nowadays, there is a great interest in the economic success of direct ethanol fuel cells; however, our atomistic understanding of the designing of stable and low-cost catalysts for the steam reforming of ethanol is still far from satisfactory, in particular due to the large number of undesirable intermediates. In this study, we will report a first-principles investigation of the adsorption properties of ethanol and water at low coverage on close-packed transition-metal (TM) surfaces, namely, Fe(110), Co(0001), Ni(111), Cu(111), Ru(0001), Rh(111), Pd(111), Ag(111), Os(0001), Ir(111), Pt(111), and Au(111), employing density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We employed the generalized gradient approximation with the formulation proposed by Perdew, Burke, and Erzenholf (PBE) to the exchange correlation functional and the empirical correction proposed by S. Grimme (DFT+D3) for the van der Waals correction. We found that both adsorbates binds preferentially near or on the on top sites of the TM surfaces through the 0 atoms. The PBE adsorption energies of ethanol and water decreases almost linearly with the increased occupation of the 4d and 5d d-band, while there is a deviation for the 3d systems. The van der Waals correction affects the linear behavior and increases the adsorption energy for both adsorbates, which is expected as the van der Waals energy due to the correlation effects is strongly underestimated by DFT-PBE for weak interacting systems. The geometric parameters for water/TM are not affected by the van der Waals correction, i.e., both DFT and DFT+D3 yield an almost parallel orientation for water on the TM surfaces; however, DFT+D3 changes drastically the ethanol orientation. For example, DFT yields an almost perpendicular orientation of the C-C bond to the TM surface, while the C-C bond is almost parallel to the surface using DFT +D3 for all systems, except for ethanol/Fe(110). Thus, the van der Waals correction decreases the distance of the C atoms to the TM surfaces, which might contribute to break the C-C bond. The work function decreases upon the adsorption of ethanol and water, and both follow the same trends, however, with different magnitude (larger for ethanol/TM) due to the weak binding of water to the surface. The electron density increases mainly in the region between the topmost layer and the adsorbates, which explains the reduction of the substrate work function.

Aims: Adrenomedullin (AM) is a peptide that displays cardiovascular protective activity. We investigated the effects of chronic ethanol consumption on arterial blood pressure, vascular reactivity to AM and the expression of AM system components in the rat mesenteric arterial bed (MAB). Methods: Male Wistar rats were treated with ethanol (20% vol/vol) for 6 weeks. Systolic, diastolic and mean arterial blood pressure were monitored in conscious rats. Vascular reactivity experiments were performed on isolated rat MAB. Matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) levels were determined by gelatin zymography. Nitrite and nitrate generation were measured by chemiluminescence. Protein and mRNA levels of pre-pro-AM, CRLR (calcitonin receptor-like receptor) and RAMP1, 2 and 3 (receptor activity-modifying proteins) were assessed by western blot and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction, respectively. Results: Ethanol consumption induced hypertension and decreased the relaxation induced by AM and acetylcholine in endothelium-intact rat MAB. Phenylephrine-induced contraction was increased in endothelium-intact MAB from ethanol-treated rats. Ethanol consumption did not alter basal levels of nitrate and nitrite, nor did it affect the expression of MMP-2 or the net MMP activity in the rat MAB. Ethanol consumption increased mRNA levels of pre-pro-AM and protein levels of AM in the rat MAB. Finally, no differences in protein levels or mRNA of CRLR and RAMP1, 2 and 3 were observed after treatment with ethanol. Conclusion: Our study demonstrates that ethanol consumption increases blood pressure and the expression of AM in the vasculature and reduces the relaxation induced by this peptide in the rat MAB.

In this paper we present results on the electro-oxidation of ethanol on unsupported (carbon free) platinum nanoparticles, considering the effects of the alcohol concentration. The case of the so-called dual pathway mechanism during the electro-oxidation of ethanol showed to be influenced by the surface coverage of adsorbed carbon monoxide (COad) at unsupported platinum. The influences of adsorbed intermediates were followed by in situ infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and by electrochemical experiments. Unsupported platinum showed that the reaction leads to the formation of CO2 and acetic acid as main products at low concentrations of ethanol (0.01 to 0.1 mol L-1). At least in this case of 0.01 mol L-1 ethanol, most formation of CO2 occurred via COad (indirect pathway). At higher concentration of ethanol, however, most CO2 was formed via a reactive intermediate such as acetaldehyde (direct pathway). In addition, in this higher concentration of ethanol, the acetic acid was produced via formation of adsorbed acetaldehyde (via acetate) at higher overpotentials. In case of the acetic acid formation, a dual pathway was identified during the electro-oxidation of ethanol at low alcohol concentrations, whereas a parallel pathway occurred without the formation of adsorbed acetate intermediates at low overpotentials. EFFECTS OF ADDING LANTHANUM TO Ni/ZrO2 CATALYSTS ON ETHANOL STEAM REFORMING. The catalytic performance of Ni/ZrO2 catalysts loaded with different lanthanum content for steam reforming of ethanol was investigated. Catalysts were characterized by BET surface area, X-ray diffraction, UV-vis spectroscopy, temperature programmed reduction, and X-ray absorption fine structure techniques. Results showed that lanthanum addition led to an increase in the degree of reduction of both NiO and nickel surface species interacting; with the support, due to the higher dispersion effect. The best catalytic performance at 450 degrees C was found for the Ni/2LZ catalyst, which exhibited an effluent gaseous mixture with the highest H-2 yield.

The effect of support on the properties of rhodium and cobalt-based catalysts for ethanol steam reforming was studied in this work, by comparing the use of magnesia, alumina and Mg-Al oxide (obtained from hydrotalcite) as supports. It was found that metallic rhodium particles with around 2.4-2.6 nm were formed on all supports, but Mg-Al oxide led to the narrowest particles size distribution; cobalt was supposed to be located on the support, affecting its acidity. Rhodium interacts strongly with the support in the order: alumina> Mg-Al oxide > magnesia. The magnesium-containing catalysts showed low ethene selectivity and high hydrogen selectivity while the alumina-based ones showed high ethene selectivity, assigned to the Lewis sites of alumina. The Mg-Al oxide-supported rhodium and cobalt catalyst was the most promising sample to produce hydrogen by ethanol reforming, showing the highest hydrogen yield, low ethene selectivity and high specific surface area during reaction. We investigated the role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and nitric oxide (NO) in ethanol-induced relaxation. Vascular reactivity experiments showed that ethanol (0.03-200 mmol/L) induced relaxation in endothelium-intact and denuded rat aortic rings isolated from male Wistar rats. Pre-incubation of intact or denuded rings with L-NAME (non selective NOS inhibitor, 100 mu mol/L), 7-nitroindazole (selective nNOS inhibitor, 100 mu mol/L), ODQ (selective inhibitor of guanylyl cyclase enzyme, I mu mol/L), glibenclamide (selective blocker of ATP-sensitive K+ channels, 3 mu mol/L) and 4-aminopyridine (selective blocker of voltage-dependent K+ channels, 4-AP, 1 mmol/L) reduced ethanol-induced relaxation. Similarly, tiron (superoxide anion (O-2(-)) scavenger, 1 mmol/L) and catalase (hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) scavenger, 300 U/mL) reduced ethanol-induced relaxation to a similar extent in both endothelium-intact and denuded rings. Finally, prodifen (non-selective cytochrome P450 enzymes inhibitor, 10 mu mol/L) and 4-methylpyrazole (selective alcohol dehydrogenase inhibitor, 10 mu mol/L) reduced ethanol-induced relaxation. In cultured aortic vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs), ethanol stimulated generation of NO, which was significantly inhibited by L-NAME. In endothelial cells, flow cytometry studies showed that ethanol increased cytosolic Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]c), O-2(-) and cytosolic NO concentration ([NO]c). Tiron inhibited ethanol-induced increase in [Ca-2]c and [NO]c. The major new finding of this work is that ethanol induces relaxation via redox-sensitive and NO-cGMP-dependent pathways through direct effects on ROS production and NO signaling. These findings identify putative molecular mechanisms whereby ethanol, at pharmacological concentrations, influences vascular reactivity. (C) 2011 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Carbon supported Pt-Sn catalysts were prepared by reduction of Pt and Sn precursors with formic acid and characterized in terms of structure, morphology and surface properties. The electrocatalytic activity for ethanol oxidation was studied in a direct ethanol fuel cell (DEFC) at 70 degrees C and 90 degrees C. Electrochemical and physico-chemical data indicated that a proper balance of Pt and Sn species in the near surface region was necessary to maximize the reaction rate. The best atomic surface composition, in terms of electrochemical performance, was Pt:Sn 65:35 corresponding to a bulk composition 75:25 namely Pt3Sn1/C. The reaction products of ethanol electro-oxidation in single cell and their distribution as a function of the nature of catalyst were determined. Essentially, acetaldehyde and acetic acid were detected as the main reaction products; whereas, a lower content of CO2 was formed. The selectivity toward acetic acid vs. acetaldehyde increased with the increase of the Sn content and decreased by decreasing the concentration of the reducing agent used in the catalyst preparation. According to the recent literature, these results have been interpreted on the basis of ethanol adsorption characteristics and ligand effects occurring for Sn-rich electrocatalysts. The xylose conversion to ethanol by Pichia stipitis was studied. In a first step, the necessity of supplementing the fermentation medium with urea. MgSO(4) x 7H(2)O, and/or yeast extract was evaluated through a 2(3) full factorial design. The simultaneous addition of these three nutritional sources to the fermentation medium, in concentrations of 2.3, 1.0, and 3.0 g/l, respectively, showed to be important to improve the ethanol production in detriment of the substrate conversion to cell. In a second stage, fermentation assays performed in a bioreactor under different K(L)a (volumetric oxygen transfer coefficient) conditions made possible understanding the influence of the oxygen transfer on yeast performance, as well as to define the most suitable range of values for an efficient ethanol production. The most promising region to perform this bioconversion process was found to be between 2.3 and 4.9 h(-1), since it promoted the highest ethanol production results with practically exhaustion of the xylose from the medium. These findings contribute for the development of an economical and efficient technology for large scale production of second generation ethanol. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This research reports liquid liquid equilibrium data for the system lard (swine fat), cis-9-octadecenoic acid (oleic acid), ethanol, and water at 318.2 K, as well as their correlation with the nonrandom two-liquid (NRTL) and universal quasichemical activity coefficient (UNIQUAC) thermodynamic equations, which have provided global deviations of 0.41 % and 0.53 %, respectively. Additional equilibrium experiments were also performed to obtain cholesterol partition (or distribution) coefficients to verify the availability of the use of ethanol plus water to reduce the cholesterol content in lard. The partition experiments were performed with concentrations of free fatty acids (commercial oleic acid) that varied from (0 to 20) mass % and of water in the solvent that varied from (0 to 18) mass %. The percentage of free fatty acids initially present in lard had a slight effect on the distribution of cholesterol between the phases. Furthermore, the distribution coefficients decreased by adding water in the ethanol; specifically, it resulted in a diminution of the capability of the solvent to remove the cholesterol.

The photophysics of the 1-nitronaphthalene molecular system, after the absorption transition to the first singlet excited state, is theoretically studied for investigating the ultrafast multiplicity change to the triplet manifold. The consecutive transient absorption spectra experimentally observed in this molecular system are also studied. To identify the electronic states involved in the nonradiative decay, the minimum energy path of the first singlet excited state is obtained using the complete active space self-consistent field//configurational second-order perturbation approach. A near degeneracy region was found between the first singlet and the second triplet excited states with large spin-orbit coupling between them. The intersystem crossing rate was also evaluated. To support the proposed deactivation model the transient absorption spectra observed in the experiments were also considered. For this, computer simulations using sequential quantum mechanic-molecular mechanic methodology was used to consider the solvent effect in the ground and excited states for proper comparison with the experimental results. The absorption transitions from the second triplet excited state in the relaxed geometry permit to describe the transient absorption band experimentally observed around 200 fs after the absorption transition. This indicates that the T-2 electronic state is populated through the intersystem crossing presented here. The two transient absorption bands experimentally observed between 2 and 45 ps after the absorption transition are described here as the T-1 -> T-3 and T-1 -> T-5 transitions, supporting that the intermediate triplet state (T-2) decays by internal conversion to T-1. There has been much discussion on the importance of Brazilian ethanol in promoting a more sustainable society. However, there is a lack of analysis of whether sugarcane plants/factories that produce this ethanol are environmentally suitable. Thus, the objective of this study was to analyse stages of environmental management at four Brazilian ethanol-producing plants, examining the management practices adopted and the factors behind this adoption. The results indicate that (1) only one of the four plants is in the environmentally proactive stage; (2) all plants are adopting operational and organisational environmental management practices; (3) all plants have problems in communicating environmental management practices; and (4) the plant with the most advanced environmental management makes intense use of communication practices and is strongly oriented towards a more environmentally aware international market. This paper is an attempt to explain the complex relationship between the evolution of environmental management, environmental practices and motivation using a framework. The implications for society, plant directors and scholars are described, as well as the study's limitations.

The ethanol electro-oxidation reaction was evaluated using a polycrystalline Au substrate modified with two different amounts of Pt using the galvanic exchange methodology. FTIR results suggest that Pt deposits have a greater ability to break the C-C bond present in the ethanol molecule. However, under potentiostatic conditions both modified Au surfaces undergo faster deactivation in comparison with polycrystalline platinum as indicated by the chronoamperometric results. XPS results indicate the presence of two phases depending on the Pt content. These are: (i) Pt-Au alloy and (ii) segregated Pt. The structural and electronic properties of these phases were related to the differences observed in the catalytic activity.

This work describes the study of the ethanol oxidation reaction of a Pt/C Etek electrocatalyst that was supported on different substrates, such as gold, glassy carbon and carbon cloth treated with PTFE. In the ethanol oxidation reaction, the activity varies with the substrate, as well as the pathways for ethanol oxidation, as studied by an ATR-FTIR in situ setup using the carbon cloth as the electrocatalyst support. The electrocatalyst Pt/C supported on gold starts acetaldehyde production from ethanol oxidation at an onset potential of 0.1 V less than that observed for the same process on Teflon-treated carbon cloth. The Pt/C supported on the carbon cloth starts its CO2 production for the same oxidation process at 0.2 V less than on the Pt/C supported on gold substrate. The differences in catalytic activity for the ethanol oxidation reaction depend not only on the electrocatalyst but also on various electrode factors, such as the substrate, the roughness of the electrode and the charge transfer resistance.

BACKGROUND: Alkaline sulfite/anthraquinone (ASA) cooking of Pinus radiata and Pinus caribaea wood chips followed by disk refining was used as a pretreatment for the production of low lignified and high fibrillated pulps. The pulps produced with different delignification degrees and refined at different energy inputs (250, 750 and 1600 Wh) were saccharified with cellulases and fermented to ethanol with Saccharomyces cerevisiae using separated hydrolysis and fermentation (SHF) or semi-simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSSF) processes. RESULTS: Delignification of ASA pulps was between 25% and 50%, with low glucans losses. Pulp yield was from 70 to 78% for pulps of P. radiata and 60% for the pulp of P. caribaea. Pulps obtained after refining were evaluated in assays of enzymatic hydrolysis. Glucans-to-glucose conversion varied from 20 to 70%, depending on the degree of delignification and fibrillation of the pulps. The best ASA pulp of P. radiata was used in SHF and SSSF experiments of ethanol production. Such experiments produced maximum ethanol concentration of 20 g L-1, which represented roughly90% of glucose conversion and an estimated amount of 260 L ethanol ton(-1) wood. P. caribaea pulp also presented good performance in the enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation but, due to the low amount of cellulose present, only 140 L ethanol would be obtained from each ton of wood. CONCLUSION: ASA cooking followed by disk refining was shown to be an efficient pretreatment process, which generated a low lignified and high-fibrillated substrate that allowed the production of ethanol from the softwoods with high conversion yields.
