The responses of a cryohydrogel tyrosinase enzyme electrode to four substrates in three pure water immiscible organic solvents were investigated. Kinetic parameters, the maximum kinetic current, I-max, the apparent Michaelis-Menten constant, K-m(app), and I-max/K-m(app), were calculated. The I-max/K-m(app) value was taken as an indicator of the catalytic efficiency of the sensor. The effect of the substrate hydrophobicity on I-max/K-m(app) and response time of the sensor were discussed. The effects of both hydrophobicity (log P) and dielectric constant (epsilon) of the organic solvent on the catalytic efficiency of the enzyme in the organic phase were studied. The perturbation method is developed to investigate the effective nonlinear dielectric response of Kerr composites when the external ac and dc electric field is applied. Under the external ac and dc electric field E-app=E-a(1+sin omegat), the effective coupling nonlinear response can be induced by the cubic nonlinearity of Kerr nonlinear materials at the zero frequency, the finite basic frequency omega, the second and the third harmonics, 2omega and 3omega, and so on. As an example, we have investigated the cylindrical inclusions randomly embedded in a host and derived the formulas of the effective nonlinear dielectric response at harmonics in dilute limit. For a higher concentration of inclusions, we have proposed a nonlinear effective-medium approximation by introducing the general effective nonlinear response. With the relationships between the effective nonlinear response at harmonics and the general effective nonlinear response, we have derived a set of formulas of the effective nonlinear dielectric responses at harmonics for a larger volume fraction. Effective dielectric responses of graded cylindrical composites are investigated when an external uniform field is applied to the composites. Considering linear random composites of cylindrical particles with a specific dielectric function, which varies along the radial direction of the particles, we have studied three cases of dielectric profiles: exponential function, linear and power-law profiles. For each case, the effective dielectric response of graded composites is given on the basis of exact solutions of the local potentials of composites in the dilute limit. For a larger volume fraction, we have proposed an effective medium approximation to estimate the effective dielectric response.

Under an external alternating current (ac) field, the effective ac dielectric response of graded composites consisting of the graded cylindrical inclusion having complex permittivity profiles has been investigated theoretically. A model that the dielectric function is assumed to be a constant while the conductivity has a power-law dependence on the radial variable r, namely epsilon(i)(r) = A + cr(k)/i omega. is studied and the local analytical potentials of the inclusion and the host regions are derived in terms of hyper-geometric function. In the dilute limit, the effective ac dielectric response is predicted. Meanwhile, we have given the exact proof of the differential effective dipole approximation (DEDA) method, which is suitable to arbitrary graded profiles. Furthermore, we have given the analytical potentials and the effective ac dielectric responses of coated graded cylindrical composites for two cases, case (a) graded core and case (b) graded coated layer, having the graded dielectric profiles, respectively. A graded piezoelectric composite consisting of a spherically anisotropic graded piezoelectric inclusion imbedded in an infinite nonpiezoelectric matrix, with the physical properties of the graded spherical inclusion having a power-law profile with respect to the radial variable r, is studied theoretically. Under an external uniform electric field, the electric displacement field and the elastic stress tensor field of this spherically anisotropic graded piezoelectric composite are derived exactly by means of displacement separation technique, based on the governing equations in the dilute limit. A piezoelectric response mechanism, in which the effective piezoelectric response vanishes along the z direction (or x,y directions), is revealed in this kind of graded piezoelectric composites. Furthermore, it is found that the effective dielectric constant decreases (or increases) with the volume fraction p of the inclusions if the exponent parameter k of the grading profile is larger (or smaller) than a critical value. The transformation field method (TFM) originated from Eshelby's transformation field theory is developed to estimate the effective permittivity of an anisotropic graded granular composite having inclusions of arbitrary shape and arbitrary anisotropic grading profile. The complicated boundary-value problem of the anisotropic graded composite is solved by introducing an appropriate transformation field within the whole composite region. As an example, the effective dielectric response for an anisotropic graded composite with inclusions having arbitrary geometrical shape and arbitrary grading profile is formulated. The validity of TFM is tested by comparing our results with the exact solution of an isotropic graded composite having inclusions with a power-law dielectric grading profile and good agreement is achieved in the dilute limit. Furthermore, it is found that the inclusion shape and the parameters of the grading profile can have profound effect on the effective permittivity at high concentrations of the inclusions. It is pointed out that TFM used in this paper can be further extended to investigate the effective elastic, thermal, and electroelastic properties of anisotropic graded granular composite materials.

The changes of corrosion potential (E-corr) of metals immersed in seawater were investigated with electrochemical technology and epifluoresence microscopy. In natural seawater, changes of E-corr were determined by the surface corrosion state of the metal. E-corr of passive metals exposed to natural seawater shifted to noble direction for about 150 mV in one day and it didn't change in sterile seawater. The in-situ observation showed that biofilms settled on the surfaces of passive metals when E-corr moved in noble direction. The bacteria number increased on the metal surface according to exponential law and it was in the same way with the ennoblement of E-corr. The attachment of bacteria during the initial period played an important role in the ennoblement of E-corr and it is believed that the carbohydrate and protein in the biofilm are reasons for this phenomenon. The double layer capacitance (C-dl) of passive metals decreased with time when immersed in natural seawater, while remained almost unchanged in sterile seawater. The increased thickness and reduced dielectric constant of C-dl may be reasons.

Dual-layer frequency-selective subwavelength grid polarizers on thin-film dielectric substrates are proposed for THz and sub-THz applications. The dual-layer grids possess enhanced (squared) polarizing efficiency at a sequence of discrete frequencies in reflection and within extended frequency bands in transmission as compared to conventional single grids.

The idealized system of an atomically flat metallic surface [highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG)] and an organic monolayer (porphyrin) was used to determine whether the dielectric function and associated properties of thin films can be accessed with scanning-near-field scanning optical microscopy (s-NSOM). Here, we demonstrate the use of harmonics up to fourth order and the polarization dependence of incident light to probe dielectric properties on idealized samples of monolayers of organic molecules on atomically smooth substrates. An analytical treatment of light/sample interaction using the s-NSOM tip was developed in order to quantify the dielectric properties. The theoretical analysis and numerical modeling, as well as experimental data, demonstrate that higher order harmonic scattering can be used to extract the dielectric properties of materials with tens of nanometer spatial resolution. To date, the third harmonic provides the best lateral resolution (∼50 nm) and dielectric constant contrast for a porphyrin film on HOPG. © 2009 American Institute of Physics.

The use of flexible substrates is growing in many applications such as computer peripherals, hand held devices, telecommunications, automotive, aerospace, etc. The drive to adopt flexible circuits is due to their ability to reduce size, weight, assembly time and cost of final product. they also accommodate flexibility by allowing relative movement between component parts and provide a route for three dimensional packaging. This paper will describe some of the current research results from the Flex-No-Lead project, European Commission sponsored programme. The principle aim of this project is to investigate the processing, performance and reliability of flexible substrates when subjected to new environmentally friendly, lead-free soldering technologies. This paper will discuss the impact of specific design variables on performance and reliability. In particular the paper will focus on copper track designs, substrate material, dielectric material and solder mask defined joints

It is shown how the Debye rotational diffusion model of dielectric relaxation of polar molecules (which may be described in microscopic fashion as the diffusion limit of a discrete time random walk on the surface of the unit sphere) may be extended to yield the empirical Havriliak-Negami (HN) equation of anomalous dielectric relaxation from a microscopic model based on a kinetic equation just as in the Debye model. This kinetic equation is obtained by means of a generalization of the noninertial Fokker-Planck equation of conventional Brownian motion (generally known as the Smoluchowski equation) to fractional kinetics governed by the HN relaxation mechanism. For the simple case of noninteracting dipoles it may be solved by Fourier transform techniques to yield the Green function and the complex dielectric susceptibility corresponding to the HN anomalous relaxation mechanism.

We introduce a novel method to simulate hydrated macromolecules with a dielectric continuum representation of the surrounding solvent. In our approach, the interaction between the solvent and the molecular degrees of freedom is described by means of a polarization density free energy functional which is minimum at electrostatic equilibrium. After a pseudospectral expansion of the polarization and a discretization of the functional, we construct the equations of motion for the system based on a Car-Parrinello technique. In the limit of the adiabatic evolution of the polarization field variables, our method provides the solution of the dielectric continuum problem "on the fly," while the molecular coordinates are propagated. In this first study, we show how our dielectric continuum molecular dynamics method can be successfully applied to hydrated biomolecules, with low cost compared to free energy simulations with explicit solvent. To our knowledge, this is the first time that stable and conservative molecular dynamic simulations of solutes can be performed for a dielectric continuum model of the solvent. Thin film capacitor structures in which the dielectric is composed of superlattices of the relaxors [0.2Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O- 3-0.8BaTiO(3)] and Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3 have been fabricated by pulsed laser deposition. Superlattice wavelength (Lambda) was varied between similar to3 and similar to 600 nm, and dielectric properties were investigated as a function of Lambda. Progressive enhancement of the dielectric constant was observed on decreasing Lambda, and, in contrast to previous work, this was not associated with the onset of Maxwell-Wagner behavior. Polarization measurements as a function of temperature suggested that the observed enhancement in dielectric constant was associated with the onset of a coupled response. The superlattice wavelength (Lambda =20 nm) at which coupled functional behavior became apparent is comparable to that found in literature for the onset of coupled structural behavior (between Lambda =5 nm and Lambda =10 nm). Measurements on 'free-standing' single-crystal barium titanate capacitors with thickness down to 75 nm show a dielectric response typical of large single crystals, rather than conventional thin films. There is a notable absence of any broadening or temperature shift of the dielectric peak or loss tangent. Peak dielectric constants of similar to25 000 are observed, and Curie-Weiss analysis demonstrates first order transformation behaviour. This is in dramatic contrast to results on conventionally deposited thin film capacitor heterostructures, which show large dielectric peak broadening and temperature shifts (e.g. Parker et al 2002 Appl. Phys. Lett. 81 340), as well as an apparent change in the nature-of the paraelectric-ferroelectric transition from first to second order. Our data are compatible with a recent model by Bratkovsky and Levanyuk (2004 Preprint cond-mat/0402100), which attributes dielectric peak broadening to gradient terms that will exist in any thin film capacitor heterostructure. The observed recovery of first order transformation behaviour is consistent with the absence of significant substrate clamping in our experiment, as modelled by Pertsev et al (1998,Phys. Rev. Lett. 80 1988), and illustrates that the second order behaviour seen in conventionally deposited thin films cannot be attributed to the effects of reduced dimensionality in the system, nor to the influence of an intrinsic universal interfacial capacitance associated with the electrode- ferroelectric interface.
