The paper considers questions of the nature, extent and role of the third sector in the development of welfare strategies in Australia. Based upon both qualitative and quantitative data, a typology of third sector welfare  organisations is discussed together with the identification of current operational models of welfare: charity; activism; welfare state industry and market. The organisational types of third sector welfare organisations in Australia are outlined and the field characterised as being large, diverse and growing. The paper reflects on the claims that the third sector provides a site for the establishment of active, pluralistic forms of welfare. Le papier considè re des questions de la nature, de l'ampleur et du rôle du troisième secteur dans le dèveloppement des stratègies d'assistance sociale en Australie. As D' Augelli and Grossman point out, there is an underrepresentation in LGB research of "youth who have had sexual experiences with both males and females." Indeed, Heath (2005) refers to the "silent B" in much GLBT research. And, Owens (1998, p. 55) discusses how heterosexism "formalizes a societal dichotomy of heterosexuality versus homosexuality with little room for bisexuals" in educational research. Most of the information on bisexuality has been obtained from studies with adult samples, and it is "unclear to what extent a separate bisexual cultural identity is consolidated during adolescence" (Ryan & Rivers, 2003, p.105). As Bryan, a 17-year-old bisexual young man in my research, declared: "It's simple bullshit logic! They don't have evidence of bi kids in schools because they don't want to find it and so don't write their research looking for it."

Alzheimer's disease is characterized by the accumulation of amyloid-ß peptide, which is cleaved from the amyloid-ß precursor protein (APP). Reduction in levels of the potentially toxic amyloid-ß has emerged as one of the most important therapeutic goals in Alzheimer's disease. Key targets for this goal are factors that affect the regulation of the APP gene. Recent in vivo and in vitro studies have illustrated the importance of copper in Alzheimer's disease neuropathogenesis and suggested a role for APP and amyloid-ß in copper homeostasis. We hypothesized that metals and in particular copper might alter APP gene expression. To test the hypothesis, we utilized human fibroblasts overexpressing the Menkes protein (MNK), a major mammalian copper efflux protein. MNK deletion fibroblasts have high intracellular copper, whereas MNK overexpressing fibroblasts have severely depleted intracellular copper. We demonstrate that copper depletion significantly reduced APP protein levels and down-regulated APP gene expression. Furthermore, APP promoter deletion constructs identified the copper-regulatory region between -490 and +104 of the APP gene promoter in both basal MNK overexpressing cells and in copper-chelated MNK deletion cells. Overall these data support the hypothesis that copper can regulate APP expression and further support a role for APP to function in copper homeostasis. Copper-regulated APP expression may also provide a potential therapeutic target in Alzheimer's disease.

Whilst the overall effectiveness of offender rehabilitation programmes in reducing recidivism is now well established, there has been less discussion of the reasons why rehabilitation programmes may be unsuccessful for some offenders. In this paper we suggest that models of change developed in counselling and psychotherapy may have utility in explaining how offender rehabilitation programmes bring about change, and argue that the dominance of cognitive-behavioural treatments in the rehabilitation field means that those offenders who have particularly low levels of problem awareness may be at increased risk of treatment failure. Understanding more about the mechanisms by which programmes help offenders to desist from offending is likely to lead to the development of more responsive and, ultimately, more effective programmes. Some suggestions for those involved in the delivery of offender rehabilitation programmes include: being mindful of the sequence of components of programmes, the development of preparation (or readiness) programmes and offering a broad suite of programmes to cater for different stages of problem awareness and assimilation among offenders.

It is increasingly accepted that psychological therapies have an important role to play in the management and treatment of those who are considered to have disorders of personality, particularly those with forensic histories. Whilst there appears to be an emerging evidence base supporting the effectiveness of treatment for this group, there have been relatively few attempts to link treatment approaches to current models of normal personality. In this paper we use McAdams' (1994) triarchic model of personality as a basis for understanding the effective treatment of personality disorders. We conclude that the model may be useful in assisting clinicians to engage patients in treatment, identify innovative methods of intervention, and conceptualise therapeutic progress.

In this paper we suggest that the Assimilation model of change (Stiles et al., 1991) may have utility in explaining how offender rehabilitation programs bring about change, and argue that those offenders who have particularly low levels of problem awareness may be at increased risk of treatment failure. Methods of measuring problem awareness and treatment readiness are discussed along with possible methods of intervention, including the Pennebaker method.
