This work assesses the performance of small biogas-fuelled engines and explores high-efficiency strategies for power generation in the very low power range of less than 1000 W. Experiments were performed on a small 95-cc, single-cylinder, four-stroke spark-ignition engine operating on biogas. The engine was operated in two modes, i.e., `premixed' and `fuel injection' modes, using both single and dual spark plug configurations. Measurements of in-cylinder pressure, crank angle, brake power, air and fuel flow rates, and exhaust emissions were conducted. Cycle-to-cycle variations in engine in-cylinder pressure and power were also studied and assessed quantitatively for various loading conditions. Results suggest that biogas combustion can be fairly sensitive to the ignition strategies thereby affecting the power output and efficiency. Further, results indicate that continuous fuel injection shows superior performance compared to the premixed case especially at low loads owing to possible charge stratification in the engine cylinder. Overall, this study has demonstrated for the first time that a combination of technologies such as lean burn, fuel injection, and dual spark plug ignition can provide highly efficient and stable operation in a biogas-fuelled small S.I. engine, especially in the low power range of 450-1000W. Elaborate male traits with no apparent adaptive value may have evolved through female mate discrimination. Tusks are an elaborate male-only trait in the Asian elephant that could potentially influence female mate choice. We examined the effect of male body size, tusk possession and musth status on female mate choice in an Asian elephant population. Large/musth males received positive responses from oestrous females towards courtship significantly more often than did small/non-musth males. Young, tusked non-musth males attempted courtship significantly more often than their tuskless peers, and received more positive responses (though statistically insignificant) than did tuskless males. A positive response did not necessarily translate into mating because of mate-guarding by a dominant male. Female elephants appear to choose mates based primarily on traits such as musth that signal direct fertility benefits through increased sperm received than for traits such as tusks that may signal only indirect fitness benefits.

A Circular Economy (CE) values material, technical or biological, as nutrient. CE thinking seeks to accelerate the conversion of technical nutrient cycles along the lines of biological nutrient cycles by re-designing systems till the scale of the economy. Though the notion of products being technical nutrient exists, its situation as an outcome of design intent is not contextually made. One objective of this article is to situate design and nutrient cycles of the earth system as and within natural cycles. This situation emphasizes the mechanism by which design affects nutrient availability to vital earth systems and draws attention to the functions that nutrients afford and serve by default before being embodied in products by human intent. The first principle of CE seeks to eliminate waste and re-purpose nutrients with minimal energy. Towards this, the historic trend of perceiving waste is drawn and Gestalts identified to arrive at the concept of tenancy and inform design. Tenancy is defined as the duration for which the nutrient embodied serves some purpose. Identifying the 6R scenarios as nutrient re-purposing functions, corresponding design strategies are stated.

A synthetic strategy is described for the co-crystallization of four-and five-component molecular crystals, based on the fact that if any particular chemical constituent of a lower cocrystal is found in two different structural environments, these differences may be exploited to increase the number of components in the solid. 2-Methylresorcinol and tetramethylpyrazine are basic template molecules that allow for further supramolecular homologation. Ten stoichiometric quaternary cocrystals and one quintinary cocrystal with some solid solution character are reported. Cocrystals that do not lend themselves to such homologation are termed synthetic dead ends.

A synthetic strategy is outlined whereby a binary cocrystal may be developed in turn into a ternary and finally into a quaternary cocrystal. The strategy hinges on the concept of the long-range synthon Aufbau module (LSAM) which is a large supramolecular synthon containing more than one type of intermolecular interaction. Modulation of these interactions may be possible with the use of additional molecular components so that higher level cocrystals are produced. We report six quaternary cocrystals here. All are obtained as nearly exclusive crystallization products when four appropriate solid compounds are taken together in solution for crystallization.

We study an s-channel resonance R as a viable candidate to fit the diboson excess reported by ATLAS. We compute the contribution of the similar to 2 TeV resonance R to semileptonic and leptonic final states at the 13 TeV LHC. To explain the absence of an excess in the semileptonic channel, we explore the possibility where the particle R decays to additional light scalars X, X or X, Y. A modified analysis strategy has been proposed to study the three-particle final state of the resonance decay and to identify decay channels of X. Associated production of R with gauge bosons has been studied in detail to identify the production mechanism of R. We construct comprehensive categories for vector and scalar beyond-standard-model particles which may play the role of particles R, X, Y and find alternate channels to fix the new couplings and search for these particles.

This paper describes the development of the 2003 CU-HTK large vocabulary speech recognition system for Conversational Telephone Speech (CTS). The system was designed based on a multi-pass, multi-branch structure where the output of all branches is combined using system combination. A number of advanced modelling techniques such as Speaker Adaptive Training, Heteroscedastic Linear Discriminant Analysis, Minimum Phone Error estimation and specially constructed Single Pronunciation dictionaries were employed. The effectiveness of each of these techniques and their potential contribution to the result of system combination was evaluated in the framework of a state-of-the-art LVCSR system with sophisticated adaptation. The final 2003 CU-HTK CTS system constructed from some of these models is described and its performance on the DARPA/NIST 2003 Rich Transcription (RT-03) evaluation test set is discussed.

Chemical control of surface functionality and topography is an essential requirement for many technological purposes. In particular, the covalent attachment of monomeric proteins to surfaces has been the object of intense studies in recent years, for applications as varied as electrochemistry, immuno-sensing, and the production of biocompatible coatings. Little is known, however, about the characteristics and requirements underlying surface attachment of supramolecular protein nanostructures. Amyloid fibrils formed by the self-assembly of peptide and protein molecules represent one important class of such structures. These highly organized beta-sheet-rich assemblies are a hallmark of a range of neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer's disease and type II diabetes, but recent findings suggest that they have much broader significance, potentially representing the global free energy minima of the energy landscapes of proteins and having potential applications in material science. In this paper, we describe strategies for attaching amyloid fibrils formed from different proteins to gold surfaces under different solution conditions. Our methods involve the reaction of sulfur containing small molecules (cystamine and 2-iminothiolane) with the amyloid fibrils, enabling their covalent linkage to gold surfaces. We demonstrate that irreversible attachment using these approaches makes possible quantitative analysis of experiments using biosensor techniques, such as quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) assays that are revolutionizing our understanding of the mechanisms of amyloid growth and the factors that determine its kinetic behavior. Moreover, our results shed light on the nature and relative importance of covalent versus noncovalent forces acting on protein superstructures at metal surfaces.

This paper discusses the Cambridge University HTK (CU-HTK) system for the automatic transcription of conversational telephone speech. A detailed discussion of the most important techniques in front-end processing, acoustic modeling and model training, language and pronunciation modeling are presented. These include the use of conversation side based cepstral normalization, vocal tract length normalization, heteroscedastic linear discriminant analysis for feature projection, minimum phone error training and speaker adaptive training, lattice-based model adaptation, confusion network based decoding and confidence score estimation, pronunciation selection, language model interpolation, and class based language models. The transcription system developed for participation in the 2002 NIST Rich Transcription evaluations of English conversational telephone speech data is presented in detail. In this evaluation the CU-HTK system gave an overall word error rate of 23.9%, which was the best performance by a statistically significant margin. Further details on the derivation of faster systems with moderate performance degradation are discussed in the context of the 2002 CU-HTK 10 × RT conversational speech transcription system. © 2005 IEEE.
