The production, purification and crystallization of a pocilloporin pigment from a reef-forming coral

Reef-building corals contain fluorescent pigments termed pocilloporins that function by regulating the light environment of coral and acting as a photoprotectant in excessive sunlight. These pocilloporins are related to the monomeric green fluorescent protein and the tetrameric DsRed fluorescent proteins, which have widespread use as biotechnological tools. An intensely blue-coloured pocilloporin, termed Rtms5, was expressed in Escherichia coli, purified and crystallized. Rtms5 was shown to be tetrameric, with deep blue crystals that diffract to 2.2 Angstrom resolution and belong to space group I4(1)22. The colour of this pocilloporin was observed to be sensitive to pH and a yellow (pH 3.5) and a red form (pH 4.5) of Rtms5 were also crystallized. These crystals belong to space group P4(2)22 and diffract to 2.4 Angstrom resolution or better.

Pacific pandanus fruit: an ethnographic approach to understanding an overlooked source of provitamin A carotenoids

Commonly recommended plant sources of provitamin A, such as dark green leafy vegetables, are not acceptable in many population groups. The objective of this study was to identify other indigenous foods that may be effectively promoted to alleviate vitamin A deficiency (VAD) and to gather information relevant to identification, production, acquisition, and consumption of foods relevant to a food-based VAD prevention strategy in the Federated States of Micronesia. An ethnographic study on edible pandanus cultivars, involving key informant interviews and observation was carried out. Analyses revealed a great range in carotenoid content. Several orange-coloured pandanus cultivars, all highly acceptable, contained high levels of carotenoid, almost meeting daily requirements in usual consumption patterns, whereas light yellow-coloured cultivars contained low levels. Availability has decreased substantially in recent years due to increased consumption of imported foods and general neglect of indigenous foods. High-carotenoid pandanus should be promoted for general enjoyment and health benefits.

Some equitably 3-colourable cycle decompositions

Let G be a graph in which each vertex has been coloured using one of k colours, say c(1), c(2),..., c(k). If an m-cycle C in G has n(i) vertices coloured c(i), i = 1, 2,..., k, and (i) - n(j) less than or equal to 1 for any i, j is an element of {1, 2,..., k}, then C is equitably k-coloured. An m-cycle decomposition C of a graph G is equitably k-colourable if the vertices of G can be coloured so that every m-cycle in C is equitably k-coloured. For m = 4,5 and 6, we completely settle the existence problem for equitably 3-colourable m-cycle decompositions of complete graphs and complete graphs with the edges of a 1-factor removed. Numerical simulation of stochastic ordinary differential equations in biomathematical modelling

In this work we discuss the effects of white and coloured noise perturbations on the parameters of a mathematical model of bacteriophage infection introduced by Beretta and Kuang in [Math. Biosc. 149 (1998) 57]. We numerically simulate the strong solutions of the resulting systems of stochastic ordinary differential equations (SDEs), with respect to the global error, by means of numerical methods of both Euler-Taylor expansion and stochastic Runge-Kutta type.
