A series of new dicationic dihydrogen complexes of ruthenium of the type cis-[(dppm)(2)Ru(eta(2)-H-2)(L)][BF4](2) (dppm = Ph2PCH2PPh2; L = phosphite) have been prepared by protonating the precursor hydride complexes cis-[(dPPM)(2)Ru(H)(L)][BF4] using HBF4.Et2O. The precursor hydride complexes have been obtained from trans-[(dppm)(2)Ru(H)(L)][BF4][(L = phospfiite) via a rare acid-catalysed isomerization reaction in six coordinate species. The trans-[(dppm)(2)Ru(H)(L)][BF4] complexes (L = phosphine) upon protonation gave the isomerized derivatives, however, further addition of acid resulted in a five-coordinate species, [(dppm)(2)RuCl](+) presumably via an intermediate phosphine dihydrogen complex. The electronic as well as the steric properties of the co-ligands seem to strongly influence the structure-reactivity behaviour of this series of complexes.

Nanoclusters of bimetallic Pt-Ru are electrochemically deposited on conductive polymer, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)(PEDOT), which is also electrochemically deposited on a carbon paper substrate. The bimetallic deposition is carried out in an acidic electrolyte consisting of chloroplatinic acid and ruthenium chloride at 0.0 V versus saturated calomel electrode (SCE) on PEDOT coated carbon paper. A thin layer PEDOT on a carbon paper substrate facilitates the formation of uniform, well-dispersed, nano clusters of Pt-Ru of mean diameter of 123 nm, which consist of nanosize particles. In the absence of PEDOT, the size of the clusters is about 251 nm, which are unevenly distributed on carbon paper substrate. Cyclic voltammetry studies suggest that peak currents of methanol oxidation are several times greater on PtRu-PEDOT electrode than on Pt-Ru electrode in the absence of PEDOT. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. Creativity is crucial for designing products and enabling innovation. Assessing creativity can help identify innovative designers and products, and support improvement of both. The literature variously defines creativity as a function of degree of novelty, usefulness, or both. Most methods for assessing creativity, however, focus only on assessing novelty of products. This research proposes a new method for assessing the creativity of products as a function of their novelty and usefulness. We develop individual methods for assessing novelty and usefulness of products. and then combine these into a method for assessing creativity of products. The proposed methods have been evaluated by benchmarking them, and other methods available from literature, against the collective, intuitive assessment of product creativity of experienced designers. This paper describes the synthesis, characterization and studies of dendrimers possessing an amino acid-metal complex as the core. Using Frechet-type polyaryl ether dendrons, L-tyrosine-metal (Zn-II and Co-II) complex cored dendrimers of 0-4 generations were synthesized. The metal complexation of the tyrosine unit at the focal point of these dendrons took place smoothly, in excellent yields, even though the sizes of the dendrons increase as the generations advance. Spectrophotometric titrations with CoII metal ion confirmed the formation of a 2 : 1 dendritic ligand to metal complex and the existence of a pseudotetrahedral geometry at the metal centre is also inferred. Cyclic voltammetric studies of dendrimer-Co-II complexes showed that while the electron transfer of Co-II to Co-I was facile for generations 0-2, such a process was difficult with generations 3 and 4, indicating a rigid encapsulation of the metal ion centre by proximal dendron groups. Further reduction of Co-I to Co-0 and the corresponding oxidation processes appear to be limited by adsorption at the surfaces of the electrodes.

The compositional evolution in sputter deposited LiCoO(2) thin films is influenced by process parameters involved during deposition. The electrochemical performance of these films strongly depends on their microstructure, preferential orientation and stoichiometry. The transport process of sputtered Li and Co atoms from the LiCoO(2) target to the substrate, through Ar plasma in a planar magnetron configuration, was investigated based on the Monte Carlo technique. The effect of sputtering gas pressure and the substrate-target distance (d(st)) on Li/Co ratio, as well as, energy and angular distribution of sputtered atoms on the substrate were examined. Stable Li/Co ratios have been obtained at 5 Pa pressure and d(st) in the range 5 11 cm. The kinetic energy and incident angular distribution of Li and Co atoms reaching the substrate have been found to be dependent on sputtering pressure. Simulations were extended to predict compositional variations in films prepared at various process conditions. These results were compared with the composition of films determined experimentally using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Li/Co ratio calculated using XPS was in moderate agreement with that of the simulated value. The measured film thickness followed the same trend as predicted by simulation. These studies are shown to be useful in understanding the complexities in multicomponent sputtering. (C) 2011 American Institute of Physics. doi:10.1063/1.3597829]

Submicron size Co, Ni and Co-Ni alloy powders have been synthesized by the polyol method using the corresponding metal malonates and Pd powder by reduction of PdOx in methanol. The kinetics of the hydrogen evolution reaction ( HER) in 6 M KOH electrolyte have been studied on electrodes made from the pressed powders. The d.c. polarization measurements have resulted in a value close to 120 mV decade(-1) for the Tafel slope, suggesting that the HER follows the Volmer-Heyrovsky mechanism. The values of exchange current density (i(o)) are in the range 1-10 mA cm(-2) for electrodes fabricated in the study. The a.c. impedance spectra measured at several potentials in the HER region showed a single semicircle in the Nyquist plots. Exchange current density (i(o)) and energy transfer coefficient (alpha) have been calculated by employing a nonlinear least square-fitting program.

The formation of molecular films of 2,9,16,23-tetraamino metal phthalocyanines [TAM(II)Pc; M (II) = Co, Cu, and TAM(III)Pc; M = Fe] by spontaneous adsorption on gold and silver surfaces is described. The properties of these films have been investigated by cyclic voltammetry, impedance, and FT-Raman spectroscopy. The charge associated with Co(II) and Co(I) redox couple in voltammetric data leads to a coverage of (0.35+/-0.05) x 10(-10) mol cm(-2), suggesting that the tetraamino cobalt phthalocyanine is adsorbed as a monolayer with an almost complete coverage. The blocking behavior of the films toward oxygen and Fe(CN)(6)(3-/4-) redox couple have been followed by cyclic voltammetry and impedance measurements. This leads to an estimate of the coverage of about 85 % in the case of copper and the iron analogs. FT-Raman studies show characteristic bands around 236 cm(-1) revealing the interaction between the metal substrate and the nitrogen of the -NH2 group on the phthalocyanine molecules.

Cathodic reduction of oxygen in fuel cells is known to be enhanced on platinum alloys in relation to the platinum metal. The higher performance of the platinum alloys is as a result of the improved oxygen-reduction kinetics on the alloys but there is hardly any increase in the electrode platinum-surface-areas for the platinum alloys as compared to the platinum metal, and thus the higher performance is solely due to the enhanced electrocatalytic activity of the alloys as compared to the platinum metal. The present X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) study on carbon-supported Pt, Pt–Co and Pt–Co–Cr electrocatalysts suggests the presence of a relatively lower Pt-oxide content on the alloys. The X-ray powder diffraction patterns for these electrocatalysts show that while the carbon-supported platinum electrocatalyst has a face-centered cubic (fcc) phase, carbon-supported Pt–Co and Pt–Co–Cr electrocatalysts exhibit a face-centered tetragonal (fct) phase. But, Pt electrocatalyst has a lower particle-size and, hence, a higher dispersion. Previous studies have shown higher activities on the Pt-alloys than on Pt, and have attributed it to changes in the electronic and structural characteristics of Pt. These changes can be correlated with the lower oxidation-state of Pt sites, as found in this study.

The objective of the present in vitro research was to investigate cardiac tissue cell functions (specifically cardiomyocytes and neurons) on poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) (50:50 wt.%)-carbon nanofiber (CNF) composites to ascertain their potential for myocardial tissue engineering applications. CNF were added to biodegradable PLGA to increase the conductivity and cytocompatibility of pure PLGA. For this reason, different PLGA:CNF ratios (100:0, 75:25, 50:50,25:75, and 0:100 wt.%) were used and the conductivity as well as cytocompatibility of cardiomyocytes and neurons were assessed. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy analysis characterized the microstructure, chemistry, and crystallinity of the materials of interest to this study. The results show that PLGA:CNF materials are conductive and that the conductivity increases as greater amounts of CNF are added to PLGA, from OS m(-1) for pure PLGA (100:0 wt.%) to 5.5 x 10(-3) S m(-1) for pure CNF (0:100 wt.%). The results also indicate that cardiomyocyte density increases with greater amounts of CNF in PLGA (up to 25:75 wt.% PLGA:CNF) for up to 5 days. For neurons a similar trend to cardiomyocytes was observed, indicating that these conductive materials promoted the adhesion and proliferation of two cell types important for myocardial tissue engineering applications. This study thus provides, for the first time, an alternative conductive scaffold using nanotechnology which should be further explored for cardiovascular applications. (C) 2011 Acta Materialia Inc. Perovskite oxides LaMO3 (M = Cr, Co, Ni), have been successfully prepared using microwaves of 2.45 GHz. Microwave preparation is rapid, clean and energy efficient. Preparation of LaCrO3, LaCoO3 and LaNiO3 has been achieved in 3 min, 5 min and 10 min respectively. Direct reaction between component oxides is used for the preparation of LaCrO3 and LaCoO3, whereas nitrates are used as starting materials for LaNiO3 preparation. Products have been characterized using XRD, IR spectroscopy and SEM. Their dc electrical conductivity has also been studied and their fracture behaviour has been examined. All three microwave prepared oxide powders are of submicron size. These perovskite oxides have been sintered to very high densities using microwaves. Possible mechanisms of the microwave-material interaction both during preparation and during sintering have been discussed.

The thiocarbohydrazone Schiff-base ligand with a nitrogen and sulphur donor was synthesized through condensation of pyridine-2-carbaldehyde and thiocarbohydrazide. Schiff-base ligands have the ability to conjugate with metal salts. A series of metal complexes with a general formula [MCl(2)(H(2)L)]center dot nH(2)O (M=Ni, Co, Cu and Zn) were synthesized by forming complexes of the N(1),N5-bis[pyridine-2-methylene]thiocarbohydrazone (H2L) Schiff-base ligand. These metal complexes and ligand were characterized by using ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis), Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR), (1)H and (13)C NMR spectroscopy and mass spectroscopy, physicochemical characterization, CHNS and conductivity. The biological activity of the synthesized ligand was investigated by using Escherichia coli DNA as target. The DNA interaction of the synthesized ligand and complexes on E. coli plasmid DNA was investigated in the aqueous medium by UV-Vis spectroscopy and the binding constant (K(b)) was calculated. The DNA binding studies showed that the metal complexes had an improved interaction due to trans-geometrical isomers of the complexes than ligand isomers in cis-positions. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. Noble metal ion substituted CeO(2) in the form of Ce(0.98)M(0.02)O(2-delta) solid solution (where M = Pt, Pd, Cu) are the new generation catalysts with applications in three-way exhaust catalysis. While adsorption of CO on noble metals ions is well-known, adsorption of CO on noble metal ions has not been studied because creating exclusive ionic sites has been difficult. Using first-principles density functional theory (DFT) we have shown that CO gets adsorbed on the noble metal Pt(2+), Pd(2+), Cu(2+) ionic sites in the respective compounds, and the net energy of the overall system decreases. Adsorption of CO on metal ions is also confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR).
