This work describes the synthesis, IR and UV-Vis spectroscopic characterization as well the thermal behavior of the [NiCl2(HIPz)(4)]center dot C3H6O (1), [Ni(H2O)(2)(HIPz)(4)](NO3)(2) (2), [Ni(NCS)(2)(HIPz)(4)] (3) and [Ni(N-3)(2)(HIPz)(4)] (4) (HIPz = 4-iodopyrazole) pyrazolyl complexes. TG experiments reveal that the compounds 1-4 undergo thermal decomposition in three or four mass loss steps yielding NiO as final residue, which was identified by X-ray powder diffraction.

Complexes of the type [PdX(PPh3)(1)]X [1 = 4-phenyl-3- thiosemicarbazide; X = Cl- (2), Br- (3), I- (4), and SCN- (5)] have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses and IR, UV/Vis, and 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. The molecular structure of complex 4 was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The binding of the complexes with a purine base (guanosine) was investigated by 1H NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry, which showed the complexes to coordinate to guanosine through N7. A gel electrophoresis assay demonstrated the ability of 2-5 to cleave DNA plasmid. All the complexes were tested in vitro by means of the MTT assay for their cytotoxicity against two murine cell lines, LM3 (mammary adenocarcinoma) and LP07 (lung adenocarcinoma), and compared with cisplatin. Complexes 2-5 exhibited good cytotoxicity that surpasses that of cisplatin in the case of LM3. A series of thiosemicarbazide/phosphane palladium(II) complexes have been synthesized and fully characterized. These complexes are able to cleave DNA plasmid and show cytotoxicity against adenocarcinoma (mammary LM3 and lung LP07), surpassing the cytotoxicity of cisplatin in the case of LM3. The preparation and characterization of a series of trinuclear mixed-valence cyano-bridged Co-III-Fe-II-Co-III compounds derived from known dinuclear [{LnCoIII(mu-NC)}Fe-II(CN)(5)](-) complexes (L-n = N-5 or N3S2 n-membered pendant amine macrocycle) are presented. All of the new trinuclear complexes were fully characterized spectroscopically (UV-vis, IR, and C-13 NMR). Complexes exhibiting a trans and cis arrangement of the Co-Fe-Co units around the [Fe(CN)(6)](4-) center are described (i.e., cis/trans-[{LnCoIII(mu-NC)}(2)Fe-II(CN)(4)](2+)), and some of their structures are determined by X-ray crystallography. Electrochemical experiments revealed an expected anodic shift of the Fe-III/II redox potential upon addition of a tripositively charged {(CoLn)-L-III} moiety. The Co-III/II redox potentials do not change greatly from the di- to the trinuclear complex, but rather behave in a fully independent and noncooperative way. In this respect, the energies and extinction coefficients of the MMCT bands agree with the formal existence of two mixed-valence Fe-II-CN-Co-III units per molecule. Solvatochromic experiments also indicated that the MMCT band of these compounds behaves as expected for a class II mixed-valence complex. Nevertheless, its extinction coefficient is dramatically increased upon increasing the solvent donor number.

The whole set of the nickel(II) complexes with no derivatized edta-type hexadentate ligands has been investigated from their structural and electronic properties. Two more complexes have been prepared in order to complete the whole set: trans(O5)-[Ni(ED3AP)]2- and trans(O5O6)-[Ni(EDA3P)]2- complexes. trans(O5) geometry has been verified crystallographically and trans(O5O6) geometry of the second complex has been predicted by the DFT theory and spectral analysis. Mutual dependance has been established between: the number of the five-membered carboxylate rings, octahedral/tetrahedral deviation of metal-ligand/nitrogen-neighbour-atom angles and charge-transfer energies (CTE) calculated by the Morokuma’s energetic decomposition analysis; energy of the absorption bands and HOMO–LUMO gap.

Electropolymerized films of teraaminometallophthalocyanines (MTAPc; M = Ni and Co) with amino groups at α- (4α-MTAPc) and β- (4β-MTAPc) positions were prepared on glassy carbon (GC) and indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes. It was found that the electropolymerization growth rate of 4α-MTAPc was less than that of 4β-MTAPc prepared under identical conditions. Further, the surface coverage of the polymerized 4β-MTAPc film was greater than that of 4α-MTAPc polymerized film. Atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and UV–visible spectroscopic studies were carried out for the polymerized films of 4α-NiIITAPc (p-4α-NiIITAPc) and 4β-NiIITAPc (p-4β-NiIITAPc) alone because both Ni(II) and Co(II) polymerized films show similar trend in electropolymerization and surface coverage values. AFM images show that p-4α-NiIITAPc film contains islands and the thickness of this film was nearly three times less than that of p-4β-NiIITAPc. XRD patterns for the two polymerized films reveal that p-4β-NiIITAPc film was relatively more crystalline than p-4α-NiIITAPc film. Further, the compactness of these films was scrutinized from their barrier properties toward [Fe(CN)6]3−/4− redox couple. The differences in the polymerization growth rate of 4α-MTAPc and 4β-MTAPc, and the thicknesses of the resultant polymerized films suggest that unlike 4β-MTAPc one or two amino groups might have not involved in electropolymerization in the case of 4α-MTAPc. Further, the influence of surface coverage on the electrocatalytic properties of the polymerized films was studied by taking p-4β-CoIITAPc and p-4α-CoIITAPc films as examples. The electrocatalytic oxygen reduction current was almost same at both the electrodes suggesting that only the surface species were involved in the electrocatalytic reduction of oxygen.

Three distinct coordination complexes, viz., [Co(imi)(2)(tmb)(2)] (1) [where imi = imidazole], {[Ni(tmb)(2)(H2O)(3)]center dot 2H(2)O}(n) (2) and [Cu-2(mu-tmb)(4)(CH3OH)(2)] (3), have been synthesized hydrothermally by the reactions of metal acetates,2,4,6-trimethylbenzoic acid (Htmb) and with or without appropriate amine. The Ni analogue of 1 and the Co analogue of 2 have also been synthesized. X-ray single-crystal diffraction suggests that complex 1 represents discrete mononuclear species and complex 2 represents a 1D chain coordination polymer in which the Ni(H) ions are connected by the bridging water molecules. Complex 3 represents a neutral dinuclear complex. In 1, the central metal ions are associated by the carboxylate moiety and imidazole ligands, whereas the central metal atom is coordinated to the carboxylate moiety and the respective solvent molecules in 2 and 3. In 3, the four 2,4,6-trimethylbenzoate moieties act as a bridge connecting two copper (11) ions and the 0 atoms of methanol coord geometry, with the methanol molecule at the apical position. In all the three structures the central metal atom sits on a crystallographic inversion centre. In all the cases, the coordination entities are further organized via hydrogen bonding interactions to generate multifarious supramolecular networks. Complexes 1, 2 and 3 have also been characterized by spectroscopic (UV/Vis and IR) and thermal analysis (TGA). In addition, the complexes were found to exhibit antimicrobial activity. The magnetic susceptibility measurements, measured from 8 to 300 K, revealed antiferromagnetic interactions between the Co(II) ions in compound 1 and the Ni(II) ions in la, respectively.

I-isonitroso-imine ligand complexes of nickel(II), namely, bis(isonitrosomethylacetoacetate-imino)Ni(II), Ni(IMI)(IMI); bis(isonitrosobenzoylacetoneimino)Ni(II), Ni(IBI)(IBI) and bis(isonitrosoacetoacetanilideimino)Ni(II), Ni(IANI)(IANI), have been prepared and characterized. On the basis of their spectroscopic and magnetic properties, these complexes are suggested to have a square-planar stereochemistry around the metal ion with both nitrogen (ligand denoted without prime) and oxygen (ligand denoted with prime) coordinated isonitroso groups. The i.r. and NMR spectra of these and other similar complexes are discussed.

Neutral and cationic organometallic ruthenium(II) piano stool complexes of the type [(eta(6)-cymene)R-uCl(X)(Y)] (complexes R1-R8) has been synthesized and characterized. In cationic complexes, X, Y is either a eta(2) phosphorus ligand such as 1,1-bis(diphenylphosphino)methane (DPPM) and 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane (DPPE) or partially oxidized ligands such as 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)methane monooxide (DPPMO) and 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane monooxide (DPPEO) which are strong hydrogen bond acceptors. In neutral complexes. X is chloride and Y is a monodentate phosphorous donor. Complexes with DPPM and DPPMO ligands ([(eta(6)-cymene)Ru(eta(2)-DPPM)Cl]PF6 (R2), [(eta(6)-cymene)Ru(eta(2)-DPPMO)Cl]PF6 (R3), [(eta(6)-cymene)Ru(eta(1)-DPPM)Cl-2] (R5) and [(eta(6)-cymene)Ru(eta(1)-DPPMO)Cl-2] (R6) show good cytotoxicity. Growth inhibition study of several human cancer cell lines by these complexes has been carried out. Mechanistic studies for R5 and R6 show that inhibition of cancer cell growth involves both cell cycle arrest and apoptosis induction. Using an apoptosis PCR array, we identified the sets of antiapoptotic genes that were down regulated and pro-apoptotic genes that were up regulated. These complexes were also found to be potent metastasis inhibitors as they prevented cell invasion through matrigel. The complexes were shown to bind DNA in a non intercalative fashion and cause unwinding of plasmid DNA in cell-free medium by competitive ethidium bromide binding, viscosity measurements, thermal denaturation and gel mobility shift assays.

Transition metal [Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II) and Cd(II)] complexes of a new Schiff base, 3-acetylcoumarin-o-aminobenzoylhydrazone were synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, magnetic moments, conductivity measurements, spectral [Electronic, IR, H-1 and C-13 NMR, EPR] and thermal studies. The ligand crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group P2(1)/n with a = 9.201(5), b = 16.596( 9), c = 11.517(6) angstrom, beta= 101.388(9)degrees, V = 1724.2 (17) angstrom(3) and Z = 4. Conductivity measurements indicated Mn(II) and Co(II) complexes to be 1 : 1 electrolytes whereas Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II) and Cd(II) complexes are non-electrolytes. Electronic spectra reveal that all the complexes possess four-coordinate geometry around the metal.

A novel chelate exchange reaction, leading to the formation of a series of N-alkyl substituent dependent mixed ligand isomeric complexes of the type Ni(R-AB)(AC') and Ni(R-AC)(AB') (Figure 1) are discussed. Here, AB and AC denote two different N-bonded isonitroso-β-keto-imino ligand moieties, while AB' and AC' are the corresponding O-bonded ligand moieties and R is an N-alkyl substituent. The isomeric complexes are suggested to be monomeric, neutral and diamagnetic with an asymmetric square planar geometry. The bonding isomerism of the isonitroso group in these complexes is discussed on the basis of the infrared and proton magnetic resonance spectral studies. A probable mechanism for the preparative route is also proposed.

Transition metal ammonium double sulphates (NH4)2M(SO4)2· 6H2O, where M = Fe, Co and Ni react with hydrazine hydrate in air giving crystalline compounds of the general formula (N2H5) [M(N2H3COO)3] H2O. The reaction proceeds through (N2H5)2 M(SO4)2, · 3N2H4, (N2H5)2 [M(OH)4 · (N2H4)2], M(N2H3COO)2 · (N2H4)2 and N2H5 [M(N2 H3 COO)3] intermediates. The reaction sequence is followed by chemical analysis and infrared spectra. A possible reaction mechanism has been suggested.

The synthesis and thermal analysis studies of several hydroxobridged homo and hetero trinuclear cobalt(III) complexes are reported. The complexes are of the type [M(H2O)(x) {(OH)(2)Co(en)(2)}(2)](SO4)(2). nH(2)O and [M(H2O)(x){(OH)(2)Co(NH3)(4)}(2)] (SO4)(2). nH(2)O where en denotes ethylenediamine and M =Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) with x=0 for Cu(II), and 2 for other metal ions, and n =3, 4 or 5. The TG and DTA studies of these compounds show that one or more intermediate compounds are formed in each case before the metal oxides are produced.
