The presence of toxic cyanobacteria in drinking water reservoirs renders the need to develop treatment methods for the 'safe' removal of their associated toxins. Chlorine has been shown to successfully remove a range of cyanotoxins including microcystins, cylindrospermopsin and saxitoxins. Each cyanotoxin requires specific treatment parameters, particularly solution pH and free chlorine residual. However, currently there has not been any investigation into the toxicological effect of solutions treated for the removal of these cyanotoxins by chlorine. Using the P53(def) transgenic mouse model mate and female C57BL/6J hybrid mice were used to investigate potential cancer inducing effects from such oral dosing solutions. Both purified cyanotoxins and toxic cell-free extract cyanobacterial solutions were chlorinated and administered over 90 and 170 days (respectively) in drinking water. No increase in cancer was found in any treatment. The parent cyanotoxins, microcystins, cylindrospermopsin and saxitoxins were readily removed by chlorine. There was no significant increase in the disinfection byproducts trihalomethanes or haloacetic acids, levels found were well below guideline values. Histological examination identified no effect of treatment solutions except male mice treated with chlorinated cylindrospermopsin (as a cell free extract). In this instance 40% of males were found to have fatty vacuolation in their livers, cause unknown. It is recommended that further toxicology be undertaken on chlorinated cyanobacterial solutions, particularly for non-genotoxic carcinogenic compounds, for example the Tg.

Backcrossing has been little used in cacao breeding, particularly due to the long time required to transfer genes and recover the genetic background of the recurrent parent. The objective of this study was to select individuals, resulting from the backcross CEPEC-42 x SIC-19, genetically related to the recurrent parent SIC-19 by using RAPD molecular markers, among those with resistance to witches' broom. Of the 31 plants that clustered with SIC-19, 18 from the replanted material remained free of the disease in the field, with good vegetative aspect and, therefore can be used for backcross to reach the desired objective.

The effect of several desilication experimental parameters (base concentration, temperature and time) on the characteristics of MOR zeolite was studied. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Al-27 and Si-29 MAS-NMR, chemical analysis, and FTIR (framework vibration region). The textural characterization was made by N-2 adsorption and the acidity was evaluated by pyridine adsorption followed by FTIR and by the catalytic model reaction of n-heptane cracking. The alkaline treatments promoted the Si extraction from the zeolite framework, without considerable loss of crystallinity and, as it was envisaged, an important increase of the mesoporous structure was attained. A linear correlation between the number of framework Si per unit cell. N-Si and the asymmetric stretching wavenumber, nu(i), was observed. The acidity characterization shows that the desilicated samples exhibit practically the same acid properties than the parent HMOR zeolite. The optimum desilication conditions were those used to obtain sample M/0.2/85/2, i.e., sample treated with 0.2 M NaOH solution at 85 degrees C for 2 h.

A copper C(2)-symmetric bis(oxazoline), CuBox, was introduced in two forms of commercial Y zeolite: a sodium form (NaY) and an ultrastable form (NaUSY). CuBox was introduced by first partially exchanging the sodium cations of both zeolites for copper and then by refluxing the obtained materials with a solution of bis(oxazoline) (Box). Two different loadings were prepared for each form of zeolite. The materials were characterized by copper ICP-AES, elemental analysis, XPS, FTIR, TG, and nitrogen adsorption isotherms at -196 degrees C. Evidence for Box ligand location in the supercages of NaY and NaUSY zeolites and its coordination to the exchanged copper(II) was obtained by the several techniques used. The materials were all active in the cyclopropanation of styrene with ethyldiazoacetate at room temperature and diastereoselective toward trans cydopropanes. Although the materials containing Box showed low enantioselectivities, their catalytic activities were higher than the parent copper exchanged zeolites, and did not decrease with reuse, at least during three consecutive cycles.

MOR zeolites were modified via desilication treatments with NaOH, under conventional and microwave heating. The samples were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, (27)Al and (29)Si NMR spectroscopy. TEM and N(2) adsorption at -196 degrees C. The acidity of the samples and the space available inside the pores were evaluated through a catalytic model reaction, the isomerization of m-xylene, for which the profiles of the coke thermal decomposition were also analyzed. Powder X-ray diffraction and (29)Si and (27)Al MNR results show that in comparison with conventional heating, microwave irradiation (a less time consuming process) leads to identical amount of Si extraction from the zeolite framework. With this treatment. in addition to the customary mesopores development promoted by conventional heating, a partial conversion of the zeolite microporosity into larger micropores, is observed. The microwave irradiated and conventionally heated samples show different catalytic behavior in the m-xylene isomerization model reaction. It was observed that, by controlling the experimental conditions, it is possible to obtain samples with catalytic properties closer to the parent material, which is also confirmed by the respective coke analysis. - ABSTRACT This study aimed to characterize the families of rural and urban areas that receive support from Early Intervention Teams. It has been proposed yet whether professionals IP suit their practices to the characteristics of these families and communities integrated in different cultural contexts. Interviews were conducted semidirective, participants were ten respondents and teachers with educational intervention teams, five in direct support to families in rural areas and five interventions with families in urban areas. This study resulted in a number of qualitative data that then analyzed and discussed, led to several conclusions that comes to answer the questions and problems early. The families included in these contexts have characteristics that differentiate them; qualifications, resources, needs and behaviors in the community. Has cultural aspects that influence their attitudes, participation and autonomy and are not decisive in the development of the child. In the rural households have a greater number of needs compared to urban families. The greatest needs of families in rural settings are located in financial matters, training and technical support and expertise. The greatest needs of the urban households are located at the level of weak family support and social networks. Common needs lie in information needs and promoting autonomy and parenting skills. The home visits and interventions may allow improved identification of needs and resources of families and understand the benchmarks of some children. Learning opportunities are greater in these meetings at home, are present in many cases, elements of the extended family, which often plays a key role in education and stimulation of these children. Teachers IP intervention in the urban compared with rural teachers placed in context, support families in general include professional areas more financially advantageous. These families will have better starting conditions for access to more resources and support. In both contexts there is a common need, lack of information and some autonomy and parenting skills in relation to the growth of children. The meetings of parents or creating parent groups that are based on the sharing of information and experiences are planned but are not a reality in these teams. In quality practices, the professional must act in natural contexts like the family or the community, but may also include routines, jokes, and parties’ etc. scenarios that v facilitate the day-to-day. Families have their own contexts and routines that professionals should identify, collect the data indicate that the need for more careful assessment of the needs of families. Best practices and legislative environment are taken into account by teachers and professional teams, the documentary resources are mostly common to all participating teams, following the guidelines and documents / drafts provided by the coordinating committee SNIPI (National Intervention Early Childhood) Despite the theoretical recommendations for quality practices family-centered, we see that these are part of the concerns of teachers, but are not always implemented. The issue of child seems to be still the most important programs and plans and even the decisive criterion for delineating the duration and frequency of interventions whether in urban or rural.

- ABSTRACT Associated with an increased number of support structures for early childhood, we have witnessed a growing interest in studying the quality of these listed structures due to the impact that this will have on the quality development of children. Parents, as primary educators and educational agents privileged child, assume a key role in this regard. Through this study is to evaluate which representations and concept of parents about the quality of daycare. We performed a literature search in order to fit theoretically the main concepts covered in this study. We analyzed investigations already carried out on Nursery and Regulations and Guidelines for National Nursery. In terms of empirical studies we conducted two studies on the Representations about the Parent Nursery: A Qualitative Analysis using interviews with 20 parents and a Quantitative Study applying questionnaires to 180 parents. The main results of both studies revealed that parents value the nursery as a space to promote child development; value the affective dimension of work in nursery; qualified educators and desire for a good and respectful relationship between nursery and the family. These results pave the way for a deeper reflection about the representations, beliefs and values from the family about nursery.

OBJECTIVE: To explore whether parents' engagement in shift work affects the sleep habits of their adolescent children who attend school in two shifts. METHODS: The data were drawn from an extensive survey of sleep and daytime functioning of adolescents attending school one week in the morning and the other in the afternoon. The participants were 1,386 elementary and high school students (11-18 years old) whose parents were both employed. The data were analyzed using MANOVA, with parents' work schedule, adolescents' gender and type of school as between-subject factors. RESULTS: Parents' working schedule significantly affected the sleep patterns of high school adolescents. When attending school in the morning, adolescents whose parents were both day workers woke up somewhat later than adolescents with one shiftworking parent. In addition, they slept longer than adolescents whose parents were both shift workers. On weekends, adolescents whose parents both worked during the day went to bed earlier than adolescents whose parents were both shiftworkers. They also had smaller bedtime delay on weekends with respect to both morning and afternoon shifts than adolescents for whom one or both parents worked shifts. A significant interaction between parents' working schedule, adolescents' gender and type of school was found for sleep extension on weekends after afternoon shift school. CONCLUSIONS: Parental involvement in shift work has negative effects on the sleep of high school adolescents. It contributes to earlier wake-up time and shorter sleep in a week when adolescents attend school in the morning, as well as to greater bedtime irregularity.

Childhood excessive weight and obesity are a major public health concern from early childhood. Early childhood is an important period of development for developing healthy eating habits, that may be associated with an adequate present/future BMI. There is extensive evidence that children’s food intake is shaped by early experiences, suggesting ways in which parenting practices may be promoting obesity. But what leads parents to endorse healthier or detrimental educational practices and routines needs further study. 1. Perception of children’s weight: parents of overweight or obese children often fail to correctly perceive their children as overweight; failing to recognize their children’s excessive weight may impeach parents from implementing the best educational practices. 2. Concern: relation between the adequacy of mothers perception of their children’s weight and the level of concern - parental concern is be associated with parental practices. 3. Attribution of control: also, if parents do not consider their children’s eating behavior at least partially controllable by them, they may relinquish some of their responsibility in this area. Self-efficacy: evidence linking parental self-efficacy to parent competence and to parenting practices and behaviors; low parental self-efficacy related to the control of everyday behavior of young children may lead parents to abandon more consistent health practices and endorse permissive and inconsistent strategies. We designed 2 sequential studies that aim to contribute to the understanding of cognitive determinants of children’s eating patterns.

The 5-Isopropyl-3-[4-(6-methoxy-quinolin-8-ylamino)-pentyl]-2,2-dimethyl-imidazolidin-4-one (ValPQacet) was sinthesized through acylation of the anti-malarial primaquine with α-valine and subsequent reaction of the resulting -aminoamide with propanone (Sheme 1).Imidazolidin-4-ones of the anti malarial primaquine are being sinthesized to develop new variants in order to improve more effective treatments against malaria . Recently it has been observed that primaquine derivates could have effect in a new kind of yeast . To study the fungicidal activity against Candida albicans, Candida tropicalis, Issatchenkia orientalis, Sacharomyces cerevisae, the ValPQacet was put in the form of the hydrochloride salt. The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) could be determined for all yeast in the concentration range assayed. Also was determined MIC’s of primaquine hydrochloride salt for all yeast, and this shows that the parent drug is less active than our compound. Further studies are being performed to determine viability and cellular injury with this drugs.

Pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP) is one of the most frequent causes of mortality among HIV-infected patients. Primaquine (PQ) is an antimalarial 8-aminoquinoline effective against PCP when given in combination with clindamycin. This has drawn the attention of Medicinal Chemists towards the anti-PCP activity of 8-aminoquinolines, not only confined to those exhibiting antimalarial activity [1]. It is thought that anti-PCP 8-aminoquinolines exert their anti-PCP activity by acting on the electronic transport and redox system of the P. carinii pathogen [1]. Recently, our research group has been developing imidazolidin-4-one derivatives of PQ (Scheme 1), targeting novel compounds with improved therapeutic action, namely, higher resistance to metabolic inactivation, lower toxicity and equal or higher antimalarial activity than that of the parent drug [2,3]. These imidazolidin-4-ones were seen to block the transmission of rodent malaria, caused by Plasmodium berghei on BalbC mice, to the mosquito vector Anopheles stephensi [3]. The anti-PCP activity of our PQ derivatives is now under study and preliminary in vitro assays [4] show that some of the compounds exhibit slight to moderate activity after a 72 h incubation period against P. carinii. In one case, the IC50 was comparable to that of parent PQ. Both these studies and forthcoming results from ongoing biological assays will be presented and discussed.
