OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to investigate the associations between phase angle, anthropometric measurements, and lipid profile in patients chronically infected with the hepatitis C virus. METHODS: A total of 160 consecutive patients chronically infected with the hepatitis C virus and who received treatment at the hepatitis C outpatient unit of our hospital from April 2010 to May 2011 were prospectively evaluated. Bioelectrical impedance analysis, anthropometric measurements, and serum lipid profile analysis were performed. RESULTS: Twenty-five patients were excluded. A total of 135 patients with a mean age of 49.8±11.4 years were studied. Among these patients, 60% were male. The phase angle and BMI means were 6.5±0.8° and 26.5±4.8 kg/m2, respectively. Regarding anthropometric variables, mid-arm circumference, mid-arm muscle circumference, and arm muscle area had a positive correlation with phase angle. In contrast, when analyzing the lipid profile, only HDL was inversely correlated with phase angle. However, in multiple regression models adjusted for age and gender, only mid-arm circumference (p = 0.005), mid-arm muscle circumference (p = 0.003), and arm muscle circumference (p = 0.001) were associated with phase angle in hepatitis C virus-infected patients. CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, phase angle is positively correlated with anthropometric measures in our study. However, there is no association between phase angle and lipid profile in these patients. Our results suggest that phase angle is related to lean body mass in patients chronically infected with hepatitis C virus.

The use of mobile robots turns out to be interesting in activities where the action of human specialist is difficult or dangerous. Mobile robots are often used for the exploration in areas of difficult access, such as rescue operations and space missions, to avoid human experts exposition to risky situations. Mobile robots are also used in agriculture for planting tasks as well as for keeping the application of pesticides within minimal amounts to mitigate environmental pollution. In this paper we present the development of a system to control the navigation of an autonomous mobile robot through tracks in plantations. Track images are used to control robot direction by pre-processing them to extract image features. Such features are then submitted to a support vector machine and an artificial neural network in order to find out the most appropriate route. A comparison of the two approaches was performed to ascertain the one presenting the best outcome. The overall goal of the project to which this work is connected is to develop a real time robot control system to be embedded into a hardware platform. In this paper we report the software implementation of a support vector machine and of an artificial neural network, which so far presented respectively around 93% and 90% accuracy in predicting the appropriate route. The aim of this study was to perform a physicochemical and morphological characterization and compare the mechanical behavior of an experimental Ti-Mo alloy to the analogous metallic Ti-based fixation system, for mandibular angle fractures. Twenty-eight polyurethane mandibles were uniformly sectioned on the left angle. These were divided into 4 groups: group Eng 1P, one 2.0-mm plate and 4 screws 6 mm long; group Eng 2P, two 2.0-mm plates, the first fixed with 4 screws 6 mm long and the second with 4 screws 12 mm long. The same groups were created for the Ti-15Mo alloy. Each group was subjected to linear vertical loading at the first molar on the plated side in a mechanical testing unit. Means and standard deviations were compared with respect to statistical significance using ANOVA. The chemical composition of the Ti-15Mo alloy was close to the nominal value. The mapping of Mo and Ti showed a homogeneous distribution. SEM of the screw revealed machining debris. For the plates, only the cpTi plate undergoes a surface treatment. The metallographic analysis reveals granular microstructure, from the thermomechanical trials. A statistically significant difference was found (P < 0.05) when the comparison between both internal fixation techniques was performed. The 2P technique showed better mechanical behavior than 1P.

During the orthodontic correction planning in addition to dental-jaw correction, facial aesthetics is the orthodontist's and patient's major concern. To prevent facial aesthetics damage is really important to take into account the type of craniofacial growth: mesofacial (balanced), dolichofacial (vertical) or brachyfacial (horizontal). We evaluated 152 documentation files from the Department of Orthodontics of Dental University of Sao Jose dos Campos- UNESP in order to analyze what kind of growth occurs in most Class I malocclusions, Class II and Class III Angle of treated individuals from 6 to 12 years old. From the randomly collected samples, 15 of them belonged to Class I Angle malocclusions; 123 belonged to Angle Class II and 14 to Class III malocclusion. The results showed that in Class I, 66.67% were classified as dolicocephalic; in Class II, 64.23% were classified as dolicocephalic and in Class III, 50% were brachycephalic. We conclude that the dolichofacial was the type which ocurred the most, both in females and males and both in malocclusion Class I and Class II. The brachyfacial type most occurred in Class III malocclusion and the mesofacial type occurred in smaller numbers in the three malocclusions studied

In this study, it is proposed to evaluate the anteroposterior position of mandible in children with Angle Class II, division 1 malocclusions, to compare two different methods of evaluating the jaw position and verifying the correlation between these two methods. We selected 26 Brazilian children with vertical growth pattern and Angle Class II, division 1 malocclusions, aged between 7 years and 8 months to 9 years and 6 months. The evaluation of the anteroposterior position of the mandible was performed with the use of lateral cephalograms by cephalometric angular SNB and linear Pog-Nperp. Based on the results obtained, it was concluded that the SNB identified more children with mandibular retrusion than Pog-Nperp; the increased tip of the SN plane may have decreased values of SNB; Pog-Nperp minimizes the possibility of error in the anteroposterior position of the mandible, since it eliminates the variable tip of the anterior skull base (SN plane); none of the cephalometric measurements used are able to eliminate the influence of the nasion point in the anterior-posterior and vertical position; correlation between SNB and Pog-Nperp is very low.

Due to its high prevalence in general population, Angle Class II malocclusion has been widely studied by several authors, as well as the methods for its treatment. Among the possible treatment methods stands out the Herbst appliance. Reintroduced more than three decades ago in the orthodontics community, it became the most utilized appliance because it does not require patient compliance, and provides continued action through bilateral telescopic tubes. The objective of the present article was to demonstrate the early treatment of Class II Division 1 malocclusion with mandibular retrusion using Herbst appliance.

The Herbst appliance is currently one of the most used appliances for the correction of Class II division 1 with mandibular retrusion. When used in peak, or just after the peak of growth it can result in some skeletal gain, which is favorable to the correction of anteroposterior discrepancy with effective and stable results. This article aims to report a case of a patient with malocclusion Class II division 1 with mandibular retrusion, associated with maxillary protusion, treated in two stages: with Herbst splint metallic appliance followed by fixed appliance orthodontic treatment.

The present study aims to compare three types of internal fixation for fractures of the mandibular angle. Mechanical testing was performed on replicas of polyurethane hemimandibles sectioned at the angle region to simulate a fracture and fixed with three different hardwares. Fixation devices enrolled on this survey included the grid plates with and without an intermediate bar and the method described by Champy and colleagues in 1978 and the sample consisted of 10 hemimandibles for each group. Vertical loadings were applied on each hemimandible and recorded after a vertical displacement of 3 and 5 mm. Statistical analysis was made by means of the variance analysis (ANOVA) and the Duncan test with a significance level of 5%. The Champy technique showed a statistically significant increased resistance when compared to the grid plates after vertical displacements of 3 and 5 mm. The results of this survey suggest that the Champy technique, when compared to the grid plate positioned at the middle of the mandibular bone (placement site selected for this study), is more resistant than the grid plate and that the inclusion or not of an intermediate bar to the grid plates does not improve its resistance after linear vertical loadings.
