Background. Among Hispanics, the HPV vaccine has the potential to eliminate disparities in cervical cancer incidence and mortality but only if optimal rates of vaccination are achieved. Media can be an important information source for increasing HPV knowledge and awareness of the vaccine. Very little is known about how media use among Hispanics affects their HPV knowledge and vaccine awareness. Even less is known about what differences exist in media use and information processing among English- and Spanish-speaking Hispanics.^ Aims. Examine the relationships between three health communication variables (media exposure, HPV-specific information scanning and seeking) and three HPV outcomes (knowledge, vaccine awareness and initiation) among English- and Spanish-speaking Hispanics.^ Methods. Cross-sectional data from a survey administered to Hispanic mothers in Dallas, Texas was used for univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses. Sample used for analysis included 288 mothers of females aged 8-22 recruited from clinics and community events. Dependent variables of interest were HPV knowledge, HPV vaccine awareness and initiation. Independent variables were media exposure, HPV-specific information scanning and seeking. Language was tested as an effect modifier on the relationship between health communication variables and HPV outcomes.^ Results. English-speaking mothers reported more media exposure, HPV-specific information scanning and seeking than Spanish-speakers. Scanning for HPV information was associated with more HPV knowledge (OR = 4.26, 95% CI = 2.41 - 7.51), vaccine awareness (OR = 10.01, 95% CI = 5.43 - 18.47) and vaccine initiation (OR = 2.54, 95% CI = 1.09 - 5.91). Seeking HPV-specific information was associated with more knowledge (OR = 2.27, 95% CI = 1.23 - 4.16), awareness (OR = 6.60, 95% CI = 2.74 - 15.91) and initiation (OR = 4.93, 95% CI = 2.64 - 9.20). Language moderated the effect of information scanning and seeking on vaccine awareness.^ Discussion. Differences in information scanning and seeking behaviors among Hispanic subgroups have the potential to lead to disparities in vaccine awareness.^ Conclusion. Findings from this study underscore health communication differences among Hispanics and emphasize the need to target Spanish language media as well as English language media aimed at Hispanics to improve knowledge and awareness.^

Results from epidemiologic studies suggest that persons working in occupations with presumed electric and magnetic field (EMF) exposures are at increased risk of brain cancer. This study utilized data from a completed, population-based, interview case-control study of central nervous system (CNS) tumors and employment in the petrochemical industry to test the hypothesis that employment in EMF-related occupations increases CNS tumor risk. A total of 375 male residents of the Texas-Louisiana Gulf Coast Area, age 20 to 79, with primary neuroglial CNS tumors diagnosed during the period 1980-84 were identified. A population-based comparison group of 450 age, race and geographically matched males was selected. Occupational histories and potential risk factor data were collected via personal interviews with study subjects or their next-of-kin.^ Adjusted odds ratios were less than 1.0 for persons ever employed in an electrical occupation (OR = 0.65; 95% CI = 0.40-1.09) or whose usual occupation was electrical (OR = 0.76; 95% CI = 0.33-1.73). Relative risk estimates did not increase significantly as time since first employment or duration of employment increased. Examination of CNS tumor risk by high (OR = 0.80), medium (OR = 0.88) and low (OR = 0.45) exposure categories for persons whose usual occupation was electrical did not indicate a dose-response pattern. In addition, the mean age of exposed cases was not significantly younger than that for unexposed cases. Analysis of risk by probability of exposure to EMFs showed non-significant elevations in the adjusted odds ratio for definite exposed workers defined by their usual occupation (OR = 1.78; 95% CI = 0.70-4.51) and ever/never employed status (OR = 1.54; 95% CI = 0.17-4.91).^ These findings suggest that employment in occupations with presumed EMF exposures does not increase CNS tumor risk as was suggested by previous investigations. The results of this study also do not support the EMF-tumor promotion hypothesis. ^

The genetic factors that influence bladder cancer clinical outcomes are largely unknown. In this clinical outcomes study, I assessed genetic variations in the Wnt/β-catenin stem-cell pathway genes for association with recurrence and progression. A total of 230 SNPS in 40 genes from the Wnt/β-catenin pathway were genotyped in 419 histologically confirmed non-muscle invasive bladder cancer cases. Several significant associations were observed in the clinical outcomes analysis. Under the dominant model WNT8B: rs4919464 (HR: 1.55, 95% CI: 1.17-2.06, P=2.2x10-3) and WNT8B: rs3793771 (HR: 1.54, 95% CI: 1.09-1.62, P=4.6x10-3 ) were statistically significantly associated with an increase risk of recurrence while two other variants, APC2: rs11668593 (HR: 2.50, 95% CI: 1.43-4.35, P=1.2x10-3) and LRP5 : rs312778 (HR: 1.81, 95% CI: 1.23-2.65, P=2.7x10-3), were significantly associated with recurrence risk under the recessive model of inheritance. Four SNPs in the recessive model were associated with an increased risk of progression (AXIN2: rs1544427, LRP5: rs312778, AXIN1: rs370681, AXIN1: rs2301522). LRP5: rs312778 had the most significant increased risk of progression with a 2.68 (95% CI: 1.52-4.72, P=6.4x10-4)-fold increased risk. Stratification analysis based on treatment regimen (transurethral resection (TUR) and Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG)) was also performed. Individuals with at least one variant in AXIN2: rs2007085 were found to have a 2.09 (95% CI: 1.24-3.52, P=5.4x10-3) -fold increased risk of recurrence in those that received TUR only, and no statistically significant effect was seen in those that received BCG. Individuals who received TUR with at least one variant in LEF1: rs10516550 were found to have a 2.26 (95% CI: 1.22-4.18, P=9.7x10-3)-fold increase risk of recurrence and no statistically significant effect was found in individuals who received BCG. Also, the recessive model of LRP6: rs2302684 in TUR only treatment was shown to have a 1.95 (95%CI: 1.18-3.21, P=8.8x10 -3)-fold increased risk of recurrence, and a suggested protective effect associated with a (HR: 0.83, 95% CI: 0.51-1.37, P=0.468) decreased risk of recurrence. Together, these findings implicate the Wnt/β-catenin stem-cell pathway as playing a role in bladder cancer clinical outcomes and have important implications for personalization of future treatment regimens. ^

A case-referent study of occupational injuries sustained by 474 workers employed in the heavy equipment machinery industry over a two year period, 1985-1986, was undertaken to examine the association of occupational injuries with non-work-related morbidity. Its specific aim was to evaluate whether employees who experienced a work-related injury had an increased prevalence of non-work-related morbidity, specifically for injuries, cardiovascular disease, mental disorders, all other disease outcomes and total morbidity, compared to employees who did not experience a work-related injury. In order to determine the direction of the relationship, the use of the previous calendar year was employed to assess non-work-related morbidity. A secondary objective of the study was the evaluation of the utility of two existing data sources, workers' compensation and group health insurance claims, and the feasibility of conducting studies based on these data.^ The association of non-work-related non-back injuries and subsequent occupational injury was statistically significant (OR = 1.31, 95% CI 1.02-1.67) for all WC claims. The strength of the association was supported by the elevated odds ratio for non-work-related injuries when severity of occupational injury was assessed by WC claim costs of $100 and greater (OR = 1.47, 1.09--1.97), and by lost workdays (OR = 1.37). Factors that predispose an individual to a non-back injury, such as personal attributes and lifestyle characteristics, also influence that individual's risk of subsequent occupational injury. These factors may be reflected in an employee's reaction to life stressors which influence susceptibility to injury. The role of employee assistance programs as a component of injury prevention strategies is suggested.^ An increased but nonsignificant prevalence of non-work-related injuries, cardiovascular disease, mental disorders, and other morbidity conditions was noted among cases. These findings do not provide support of a causal factor in the etiology of occupational injuries. In contrast to non-back injuries, these conditions are chronic in nature and their influence on risk of occupational injuries uncertain.^ In general, cases tended to file more group health insurance claims for other morbidity than did referents. The association with increased total morbidity was consistent whether worker compensation claims were analyzed by total number of claims, claims with costs of $100 and greater, or by lost workdays. Whether persons who sustained an occupational injury were in fact in poor general health than referents, warrant further investigation. ^

Geochemical analyses of organic matter were carried out on Quaternary sediments from Sites 582 and 583 (Nankai Trough) and on Pliocene to Miocene sediments from Site 584 (Japan Trench), DSDP Leg 87, to evaluate petroleum-generating potential and to characterize the organic matter. The vitrinite-huminite reflectances of indigenous materials for these sites are less than 0.3% indicating the immature nature of the sediments. The sediments, however, contain remarkable amounts of recycled organic materials. The Quaternary sediments from Sites 582 and 583 contain small amounts of amorphous organic matter (less than 0.75 wt.% organic carbon and 66-90% amorphous debris), which is composed of predominantly recycled, oxidized, and over-matured (or matured) Type III material. The amount of hydrocarbon yield indicates that those sediments have lean-source potential for commercial hydrocarbon generation. The Pliocene to Miocene sediments from Site 584 contain organic matter (0.3-1.09 wt.% organic carbon) of predominantly amorphous debris (68-96%) that originated in two sources, an indigenous Type II material and a recycled, over-matured material. Pyrolysis shows an upward increase in the section of hydrocarbon yield and the same trend is also observed in organic-carbon content. The amount of the yield indicates that the Miocene sediments have lean-to-fair source potential and the Pliocene sediments have fair-to-good source potential.

Knots arrive on Ellesmere Island in late May or early June. At Hazen Camp small flocks were present on 3 June 1966, but the main influx occurred 5 June when many flocks were seen ranging in size from 6 to 60 individuals. The sexes appeared to arrive together, but the manner of pair-formation was not determined. By 7 June pairs were distributed over the tundra with large feeding flocks forming at snowfree wet marshy areas. Most nests were on Dryas-hummocked slopes and tundra, either dry or moist, with some on clay plains and summits in a mixed Dryas and Salix vegetation. A census area of 240 ha supported at least 3 breeding pairs, and possibly 5; the total number of pairs breeding in the Hazen Camp study area was estimated to be about 25 (1.09 pairs/km**2). Egg-laying (4 nests) extended from 15 to 28 June, with 3 of the 4 sets completed between 20 and 23 June. Both sexes incubated, one of the pair more regularly than the other. The song-flight display of the male was performed most frequently during egglaying and incubation. The incubation period of the last egg in one clutch was established as being between 21.5 and 22.4 days. Four nests hatched between 12 and 20 July, and the hatching period of the entire clutch was less than 24 hours. Four of 7 nests (57 %) survived and egg survival (53 %) was low. Families left the nesting area so on after hatching, concentrating at ponds where food was readily available for the young. Both adults attended the young during the pre-fledging period, but the females apparently departed before the young had hedged. Males left once the young could fly and the adult fall migration was complete by early August. Most 01 the young departed belore mid-August. Fall migration is complete by late August or early September. The breeding season appears to be timed to peak load supply for the young. Adult Chironomidae emergence was highest between 3 and 17 July, the period during which most successful nests hatched. The increasing scarcity of adult insects for the young after mid-July was offset by family movements over the tundra and the early departure of half the adult population. Food also seemed to influence the distribution of breeding pairs aver the tundra, restricting them to the general vicinity of marshes, streams, and ponds where food is most available when the young hatch. Territoriality in the Knot appears to be closely associated with the protection of the nest against predators and has at least a local effect in regulating the number of breeding pairs. Plant material was important in the diet of adult Knots throughout the summer and the primary food from the time of arrival until mid-June. After mid-June the percentage of animal matter increased as dipterous insects became available (especially adult Chironomidae), but plant materials continued to constitute a large part of the diet, usually more than 50 %. The food of the young before fledging consisted principally of adult chironomids.
