O objetivo da pesquisa foi avaliar os indicadores de risco para a hipertensão arterial em crianças e adolescentes. Estudo transversal desenvolvido com 342 indivíduos de seis a 18 anos de uma escola da cidade de Fortaleza (CE). A maioria eram homens (51,5%).

The active fragment derived from factor XII (factor XIIf) was purified from human plasma and administered intravenously to normotensive conscious rats. Factor XIIf-mediated hypotension was dose-dependent and augmented by pretreatment with captopril, an inhibitor of the bradykinin-processing enzyme kininase II. These results therefore suggest that factor XIIf-mediated hypotension is due to the formation of bradykinin.

In natural conditions, basidiomycete ectomycorrhizal fungi such as Laccaria bicolor are typically in the dikaryotic state when forming symbioses with trees, meaning that two genetically different individuals have to fuse or 'mate'. Nevertheless, nothing is known about the molecular mechanisms of mating in these ecologically important fungi. Here, advantage was taken of the first sequenced genome of the ectomycorrhizal fungus, Laccaria bicolor, to determine the genes that govern the establishment of cell-type identity and orchestrate mating. The L. bicolor mating type loci were identified through genomic screening. The evolutionary history of the genomic regions that contained them was determined by genome-wide comparison of L. bicolor sequences with those of known tetrapolar and bipolar basidiomycete species, and by phylogenetic reconstruction of gene family history. It is shown that the genes of the two mating type loci, A and B, are conserved across the Agaricales, but they are contained in regions of the genome with different evolutionary histories. The A locus is in a region where the gene order is under strong selection across the Agaricales. By contrast, the B locus is in a region where the gene order is likely under a low selection pressure but where gene duplication, translocation and transposon insertion are frequent.

This study analyzed the development of bacterial endocarditis following dental extraction in rats with periodontal disease. Periodontal disease was produced in rats by tying silk ligatures around the two maxillary first molars, and placing the animals on a high sucrose diet. Sterile aortic valve vegetations were produced by means of a transaortic catheter, and 24 hours later the maxillary first molars were extracted. The animals were killed 72 hours after the extractions. In rats with periodontal disease induced for 10 and 14 weeks, extractions resulted in an incidence of bacterial endocarditis of 24% and 50%, respectively, most of which were due to streptococcal species (two were caused by Staphylococcus [corrected] aureus). The difference, though not statistically significant (p = 0.10, chi 2 with Yates correction), shows a trend toward increased incidence of endocarditis with increasing severity of periodontal disease. This model demonstrates that one can reliably induce bacterial endocarditis after dental extractions in rats with periodontal disease.

A detailed carbon-isotope stratigraphic study for the uppermost Pliensbachian lowermost Aalenian interval in the Median Subbetic palaeogeographic domain (External zones of the Betic Cordillera, southern Spain) has been carried out. During the Early Jurassic, the Median Subbetic, which represents a typical basin of the Hispanic Corridor connecting the Tethys and the Eastern Pacific, was located in the westernmost Tethys. The analyzed sections encompass the entire Toarcian stage as represented in the southern Iberian palaeomargin. Rocks are mainly rhythmic sequences of grey marls and marly limestones containing a rich ammonite fauna, nannofossils, and benthic foraminifers-all these provide an accurate biostratigraphic control. The lower and upper Toarcian boundaries are well represented in some of these sections and therefore represent optimal sites to link the carbon-isotope curves to ammonite zones, and to nannofossil events. delta C-13 values of bulk carbonates from the different localities of the Subbetic basin have similar variations from the uppermost Pliensbachian to the lowermost Aalenian, suggesting changes in the original DIC carbon isotope composition along the Hispanic corridor. The transition from Pliensbachian to Toarcian is marked by increasing delta C-13 values from similar to 12 to 2.0 parts per thousand, interrupted in the Serpentinum Zone by a negative shift concomitant with the Toarcian oceanic anoxic event (T-OAE), with the major ammonite extinction event of the Toarcian, and an important turnover of calcareous nannoplankton. The negative shift observed in the Serpentinum Zone confirms the global perturbation of the carbon cycling documented along the Tethys and the palaeo-Pacific in organic material and in marine carbonates. However, the amplitude of the negative excursion (similar to - 1.5 parts per thousand) is not compatible with an isotopic homogeneous seawater DIC and/or CO2 atmospheric reservoirs. The interval from the middle to the top of the Toarcian delta C-13 shows relatively constant values, minor ammonite turnovers, and is associated with increasing diversity of calcareous nannoplankton. The peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) family comprises three distinct isotypes: PPARalpha, PPARbeta/delta and PPARgamma. PPARs are nuclear hormone receptors that mediate the effects of fatty acids and their derivatives at the transcriptional level. Until recently, the characterisation of the important role of PPARalpha in fatty acid oxidation and of PPARgamma in lipid storage contrasted with the sparse information concerning PPARbeta/delta. However, evidence is now emerging for a role of PPARbeta/delta in tissue repair and energy homeostasis. Experiments with tissue-specific overexpression of PPARbeta/delta or treatment of mice with selective PPARbeta/delta agonists demonstrated that activation of PPARbeta/delta in vivo increases lipid catabolism in skeletal muscle, heart and adipose tissue and improves the serum lipid profile and insulin sensitivity in several animal models. PPARbeta/delta activation also prevents the development of obesity and improves cholesterol homeostasis in obesity-prone mouse models. These new insights into PPARbeta/delta functions suggest that targeting PPARbeta/delta may be helpful for treating disorders associated with the metabolic syndrome. Although these perspectives are promising, several independent and contradictory reports raise concerns about the safety of PPARbeta/delta ligands with respect to tumourigenic activity in the gut. Thus, it appears that further exploration of PPARbeta/delta functions is necessary to better define its potential as a therapeutic target.
