In this article, we analyse several discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods for the Stokes problem under minimal regularity on the solution. We assume that the velocity u belongs to H-0(1)(Omega)](d) and the pressure p is an element of L-0(2)(Omega). First, we analyse standard DG methods assuming that the right-hand side f belongs to H-1(Omega) boolean AND L-1(Omega)](d). A DG method that is well defined for f belonging to H-1(Omega)](d) is then investigated. The methods under study include stabilized DG methods using equal-order spaces and inf-sup stable ones where the pressure space is one polynomial degree less than the velocity space.

The present article describes a working or combined calibration curve in laser-induced breakdown spectroscopic analysis, which is the cumulative result of the calibration curves obtained from neutral and singly ionized atomic emission spectral lines. This working calibration curve reduces the effect of change in matrix between different zone soils and certified soil samples because it includes both the species' (neutral and singly ionized) concentration of the element of interest. The limit of detection using a working calibration curve is found better as compared to its constituent calibration curves (i.e., individual calibration curves). The quantitative results obtained using the working calibration curve is in better agreement with the result of inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy as compared to the result obtained using its constituent calibration curves.

This paper deals with the Schrodinger equation i partial derivative(s)u(z, t; s) - Lu(z, t; s) = 0; where L is the sub-Laplacian on the Heisenberg group. Assume that the initial data f satisfies vertical bar f(z, t)vertical bar less than or similar to q(alpha)(z, t), where q(s) is the heat kernel associated to L. If in addition vertical bar u(z, t; s(0))vertical bar less than or similar to q(beta)(z, t), for some s(0) is an element of R \textbackslash {0}, then we prove that u(z, t; s) = 0 for all s is an element of R whenever alpha beta < s(0)(2). This result holds true in the more general context of H-type groups. We also prove an analogous result for the Grushin operator on Rn+1.

In this article, we obtain explicit solutions of a linear PDE subject to a class of radial square integrable functions with a monotonically increasing weight function |x|(n-1)e(beta vertical bar x vertical bar 2)/2, beta >= 0, x is an element of R-n. This linear PDE is obtained from a system of forced Burgers equation via the Cole-Hopf transformation. For any spatial dimension n > 1, the solution is expressed in terms of a family of weighted generalized Laguerre polynomials. We also discuss the large time behaviour of the solution of the system of forced Burgers equation.

Given a point set P and a class C of geometric objects, G(C)(P) is a geometric graph with vertex set P such that any two vertices p and q are adjacent if and only if there is some C is an element of C containing both p and q but no other points from P. We study G(del)(P) graphs where del is the class of downward equilateral triangles (i.e., equilateral triangles with one of their sides parallel to the x-axis and the corner opposite to this side below that side). For point sets in general position, these graphs have been shown to be equivalent to half-Theta(6) graphs and TD-Delaunay graphs. The main result in our paper is that for point sets P in general position, G(del)(P) always contains a matching of size at least vertical bar P vertical bar-1/3] and this bound is tight. We also give some structural properties of G(star)(P) graphs, where is the class which contains both upward and downward equilateral triangles. We show that for point sets in general position, the block cut point graph of G(star)(P) is simply a path. Through the equivalence of G(star)(P) graphs with Theta(6) graphs, we also derive that any Theta(6) graph can have at most 5n-11 edges, for point sets in general position. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. One of the greatest challenges in contemporary condensed matter physics is to ascertain whether the formation of glasses from liquids is fundamentally thermodynamic or dynamic in origin. Although the thermodynamic paradigm has dominated theoretical research for decades, the purely kinetic perspective of the dynamical facilitation (DF) theory has attained prominence in recent times. In particular, recent experiments and simulations have highlighted the importance of facilitation using simple model systems composed of spherical particles. However, an overwhelming majority of liquids possess anisotropy in particle shape and interactions, and it is therefore imperative to examine facilitation in complex glass formers. Here, we apply the DF theory to systems with orientational degrees of freedom as well as anisotropic attractive interactions. By analyzing data from experiments on colloidal ellipsoids, we show that facilitation plays a pivotal role in translational as well as orientational relaxation. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the introduction of attractive interactions leads to spatial decoupling of translational and rotational facilitation, which subsequently results in the decoupling of dynamical heterogeneities. Most strikingly, the DF theory can predict the existence of reentrant glass transitions based on the statistics of localized dynamical events, called excitations, whose duration is substantially smaller than the structural relaxation time. Our findings pave the way for systematically testing the DF approach in complex glass formers and also establish the significance of facilitation in governing structural relaxation in supercooled liquids.

For a domain Omega in C and an operator T in B-n(Omega), Cowen and Douglas construct a Hermitian holomorphic vector bundle E-T over Omega corresponding to T. The Hermitian holomorphic vector bundle E-T is obtained as a pull-back of the tautological bundle S(n, H) defined over by Gr(n, H) a nondegenerate holomorphic map z bar right arrow ker(T - z), z is an element of Omega. To find the answer to the converse, Cowen and Douglas studied the jet bundle in their foundational paper. The computations in this paper for the curvature of the jet bundle are rather intricate. They have given a set of invariants to determine if two rank n Hermitian holomorphic vector bundle are equivalent. These invariants are complicated and not easy to compute. It is natural to expect that the equivalence of Hermitian holomorphic jet bundles should be easier to characterize. In fact, in the case of the Hermitian holomorphic jet bundle J(k)(L-f), we have shown that the curvature of the line bundle L-f completely determines the class of J(k)(L-f). In case of rank Hermitian holomorphic vector bundle E-f, We have calculated the curvature of jet bundle J(k)(E-f) and also obtained a trace formula for jet bundle J(k)(E-f).

Fix a prime p. Given a positive integer k, a vector of positive integers Delta = (Delta(1), Delta(2), ... , Delta(k)) and a function Gamma : F-p(k) -> F-p, we say that a function P : F-p(n) -> F-p is (k, Delta, Gamma)-structured if there exist polynomials P-1, P-2, ..., P-k : F-p(n) -> F-p with each deg(P-i) <= Delta(i) such that for all x is an element of F-p(n), P(x) = Gamma(P-1(x), P-2(x), ..., P-k(x)). For instance, an n-variate polynomial over the field Fp of total degree d factors nontrivially exactly when it is (2, (d - 1, d - 1), prod)- structured where prod(a, b) = a . b. We show that if p > d, then for any fixed k, Delta, Gamma, we can decide whether a given polynomial P(x(1), x(2), ..., x(n)) of degree d is (k, Delta, Gamma)-structured and if so, find a witnessing decomposition. The algorithm takes poly(n) time. Our approach is based on higher-order Fourier analysis.

A comprehensive experimental study has been made on angular sand to investigate various aspects of mechanical behavior. A hollow cylinder torsion testing apparatus is used in this program to apply a range of stress conditions on this angular quartzitic fine sand under monotonic drained shear. The effect of the magnitude and inclination of the principal stresses on an element of sand is studied through these experiments. This magnitude and inclination of the principal stresses are presented as an ``ensemble measure of fabric in sands''. This ensemble measure of fabric in the sands evolves through the shearing process, and reaches the final state, which indeed has a unique fabric. The sand shows significant variation in strength with changing inclination of the principal stresses. The locus of the final stress state in principal stress space is also mapped from these series of experiments. Additional aspects of non-coaxiality, a benchmarking exercise with a few constitutive models is presented here. This experimental approach albeit indirect shows that a unique state which is dependent on the fabric, density and confining stress exists. This suite of experiments provides a well-controlled data set for a clear understanding on the mechanical behavior of sands.

This work deals with the homogenization of an initial- and boundary-value problem for the doubly-nonlinear system D(t)w - del.(z) over right arrow = g(x, t, x/epsilon) (0.1) w is an element of alpha(u, x/epsilon) (0.2) (z) over right arrow is an element of (gamma) over right arrow (del u, x/epsilon) (0.3) Here epsilon is a positive parameter; alpha and (gamma) over right arrow are maximal monotone with respect to the first variable and periodic with respect to the second one. The inclusions (0.2) and (0.3) are here formulated as null-minimization principles, via the theory of Fitzpatrick MR 1009594]. As epsilon -> 0, a two-scale formulation is derived via Nguetseng's notion of two-scale convergence, and a (single-scale) homogenized problem is then retrieved. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Communication and environmental monitoring play a major role in underground mining both from production and safety point of view. However, underground mining communication as well as monitoring devices encounter several challenges because of the nature of underground features and characteristics. Lack of real time information from underground workings may hamper production and create serious safety risks. Proper communication and monitoring devices are inevitable requirements for better production and improved safety. Communication and environmental monitoring devices are basic element of underground mine infrastructure. This paper describes the performance of communication and monitoring devices being used in underground mines. An attempt has been made to assess the safety risks by these devices which may dictate future research directions.

Let Gamma subset of SL2(Z) be a principal congruence subgroup. For each sigma is an element of SL2(Z), we introduce the collection A(sigma)(Gamma) of modular Hecke operators twisted by sigma. Then, A(sigma)(Gamma) is a right A(Gamma)-module, where A(Gamma) is the modular Hecke algebra introduced by Connes and Moscovici. Using the action of a Hopf algebra h(0) on A(sigma)(Gamma), we define reduced Rankin-Cohen brackets on A(sigma)(Gamma). Moreover A(sigma)(Gamma) carries an action of H 1, where H 1 is the Hopf algebra of foliations of codimension 1. Finally, we consider operators between the levels A(sigma)(Gamma), sigma is an element of SL2(Z). We show that the action of these operators can be expressed in terms of a Hopf algebra h(Z).

The input-constrained erasure channel with feedback is considered, where the binary input sequence contains no consecutive ones, i.e., it satisfies the (1, infinity)-RLL constraint. We derive the capacity for this setting, which can be expressed as C-is an element of = max(0 <= p <= 0.5) (1-is an element of) H-b (p)/1+(1-is an element of) p, where is an element of is the erasure probability and Hb(.) is the binary entropy function. Moreover, we prove that a priori knowledge of the erasure at the encoder does not increase the feedback capacity. The feedback capacity was calculated using an equivalent dynamic programming (DP) formulation with an optimal average-reward that is equal to the capacity. Furthermore, we obtained an optimal encoding procedure from the solution of the DP, leading to a capacity-achieving, zero-error coding scheme for our setting. DP is, thus, shown to be a tool not only for solving optimization problems, such as capacity calculation, but also for constructing optimal coding schemes. The derived capacity expression also serves as the only non-trivial upper bound known on the capacity of the input-constrained erasure channel without feedback, a problem that is still open.

Compression, tension and high-velocity plate impact experiments were performed on a typical tough Zr41.2Ti13.8Cu10Ni12.5Be22.5 (Vit 1) bulk metallic glass (BMG) over a wide range of strain rates from similar to 10(-4) to 10(6) s(-1). Surprisingly, fine dimples and periodic corrugations on a nanoscale were also observed on dynamic mode I fracture surfaces of this tough Vit 1. Taking a broad overview of the fracture patterning of specimens, we proposed a criterion to assess whether the fracture of BMGs is essentially brittle or plastic. If the curvature radius of the crack tip is greater than the critical wavelength of meniscus instability [F. Spaepen, Acta Metall. 23 615 (1975); A.S. Argon and M. Salama, Mater. Sci. Eng. 23 219 (1976)], microscale vein patterns and nanoscale dimples appear on crack surfaces. However, in the opposite case, the local quasi-cleavage/separation through local atomic clusters with local softening in the background ahead of the crack tip dominates, producing nanoscale periodic corrugations. At the atomic cluster level, energy dissipation in fracture of BMGs is, therefore, determined by two competing elementary processes, viz. conventional shear transformation zones (STZs) and envisioned tension transformation zones (TTZs) ahead of the crack tip. Finally, the mechanism for the formation of nanoscale periodic corrugation is quantitatively discussed by applying the present energy dissipation mechanism.
