Polymer blends of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) (SAN) with an acrylonitrile content of about 30 wt % were prepared by means of solution-casting and characterized by virtue of pressure-volume-temperature (PVT) dilatometry. The Sanchez-Lacombe (SL) lattice fluid theory was used to calculate the spinodals, the binodals, the Flory-Huggins (FH) interaction parameter, the enthalpy of the mixing, the volume change of the mixing, and the combinatorial and vacancy entropies of the mixing for the PMMA/SAN system. A new volume-combining rule was used to evaluate the close-packed volume per mer, upsilon*, of the PMMA/SAN blends. The calculated results showed that the new and the original volume-combining rules had a slight influence on the FH interaction parameter, the enthalpy of the mixing, and the combinatorial entropy of the mixing. Moreover, the spinodals and the binodals calculated with the SL theory by means of the new volume-combining rule could coincide with the measured data for the PMMA/SAN system with a lower critical solution temperature, whereas those obtained by means of the original one could not.

Individual hydrophobically modified ethyl hydroxyethyl cellulose (HM-EHEC) molecules under different conditions were elongated using a new atomic force microscope (AFM) based technique-single-molecule force spectroscopy (SMFS). The critical concentration of HM-EHEC for micelle-like clusters at a solid/liquid interface was around 0.8 wt %, which is lower than that in solution. The different mechanical properties of HM-EHEC below and above the critical concentration were displayed on force-extension curves. Through a comparison with unmodified hydroxyethyl cellulose, substituent-induced effects on nanomechanical features of HM-EHEC were investigated. Because of hydrophobic interactions and cooperative binding with the polymer, surfactants such as sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) dramatically influence the elastic properties of HM-EHEC below the critical concentration, and further addition of SDS reduces the interactions between the hydrophobic groups and the surfactant.

By fitting the spinodals of poly(vinyl methyl ether)/deuterated polystyrene (PVME/PSD) systems, the adjustable parameters epsilon (12)* and delta epsilon* in the Sanchez-Balasz lattice fluid (SBLF) theory could be determined for different molecular weights. According to these parameters, Flory-Huggins and scattering interaction parameters were calculated for PVME/PSD with different molecular weights by means of the SELF theory. From our calculation, Flory-Huggins and scattering interaction parameters are both Linearly dependent on the reciprocal of the temperature, and almost linearly on the concentration of PSD. Compared with the scattering interaction parameters, the Flory-Huggins interaction parameters decreased more slowly with an increase in the concentration for all three series of blends.

Phase behaviors and heats of mixing of the miscible blends of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) with different molecular weights were investigated by DSC. A method proposed by Natasohn and Ebert et al. was adopted to estimate the binodal temperatures and the enthalpies of mixing from onset temperatures and values of areas of a series of endothermic peaks (corresponding to heats of demixing), respectively, in their heating scanning thermograms obtained with different heating rates. Phase diagrams and heats of mixing of this blending system were also predicted by using Sanchez-Lacombe lattice fluid theory. A very good agreement was obtained for both. phase behaviors and heats of mixing obtained with two different methods.

Polyaniline (PAn) was doped with phosphonic acid containing hydrophilic tails. The solubility of the doped PAn in water was controlled by changing the length of hydrophilic chain in the dopant. When poly(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether (PEGME) with molecular weight M-w = 550 was used as the hydrophilic chain of the dopant, the doped PAn was entirely soluble in water. The film cast from aqueous solution showed good electrochemical redox reversibility, Aqueous solution blending of PAn with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG, M-w = 20 000) and poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP, M-w = 360 000) was achieved. Percolation threshold of the composite film was lower than 3 wt.%. Electrical conductivity of the composite film was in the range of 10(-1)-10(-5) S cm(-1), depending on molecular weight of the acid and the content of PAn in the composite. Cloud-point curves reported for the system polyethersulfone (PES)/phenoxy were calculated by means of the Sanchez-Lacombe (SL) lattice fluid theory. The one adjustable parameter epsilon(12)*/k (quantifying the interaction energy between mers of the different components) can be evaluated by comparison of the theoretical and experimental phase diagrams. The Flory-Huggins (FH) interaction parameters are computed based on the evaluated epsilon(12)*/k and are approximately a linear function of volume fraction and of inverse temperature. The calculated enthalpies of mixing of PES/phenoxy blends for different compositions are consistent with the experimental values obtained previously by Singh and Walsh [1].
Low-temperature relaxation of polymers around doped dyes studied by persistent spectral hole burning
Resumo:
Persistent spectral hole burning spectroscopy is applied to evaluate the low-temperature relaxation around the dye molecules doped in several types of polymers. The doped dye is tetraphenylporphine, and the measured polymers are vinyl polymers and main chain aromatic polymers. The changes of microscopic environments around the dye are evaluated from the changes in the hole profiles during temperature cycling experiments. The relaxation behavior of the polymers is discussed in relation to their chemical structures. (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Compatibilization of blends of Linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE)-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and LLDPE-copolymer of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and 4-vinylpyridine (poly(MMA-co-4VP) with poly(ethylene-co-methacrylic acid) (EMAA) have been studied. Mechanical properties of the LLDPE-PMMA blends increase upon addition of EMAA. In order to further improve interfacial adhesion of LLDPE and PMMA, 4-vinyl pyridine units are introduced into PMMA chains, or poly(MMA-co-4VP) is used as the polar polymer. In LLDPE-poly(MMA-co-4VP)-EMAA blends, interaction of MAA in EMAA with 4VP of poly(MMA-co-4VP) causes a band shift in the infrared (IR) spectra. Chemical shifts of N-1s binding energy in X-ray photoelectronic spectroscopy (XPS) experiments indicate a transfer of proton from MAA to 4VP. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) pictures show that the morphology of the blends were improved upon addition of EMAA. Nonradiative energy transfer (NRET) fluorescence results attest that there exists interdiffusion of chromophore-labeled LLDPE chains and chromophore-labeled poly(MMA-co-4VP) chains in the interface. Based on experimental results, the mechanism of compatibilization is studied in detail. Compatibilization is realized through the interaction between MAA in EMAA with 4VP in poly(MMA-co-4VP). A novel poly(vinyl alcohol) grafting 4-vinylpyridine self-gelatinizable copolymer was adapted to immobilize glucose oxidase. The reduction of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) was detected at a Prussian Blue (PB) modified graphite electrode. A stable and sensitive glucose amperometric biosensor is described. The copolymer is a good biocompatible polymer in which the glucose oxidase retains high activity. Moreover, the copolymer can adhere firmly to the inorganic PB membrane. The sensor showed an apparent Michaelis-Menten constant of 18 +/- 0.2 mM and a maximum current density of 1.14 mu A cm(-2) mM(-1). The linear range is from 5 mu M to 4.5 mM glucose and the detection limit is 0.5. mu M glucose. The catalytic efficiency of PB for the reduction of H2O2 is higher than that for the oxidation of H2O2. Glucose concentrations in serum samples from healthy persons and diabetic patients were determined using the sensor. The results compared well with those provided by the hospital using a spectroscopy method.

A new type of sol-gel organic-inorganic hybrid material was developed and used for the production of biosensors. This material is composed of silica sol and a grafting copolymer of poly(vinyl alcohol) with 4-vinylpyridine. It prevents the cracking of conventional sol-gel-derived glasses and eliminates the swelling of the hydrogel. The optimum composition of the hybrid material was first examined, and then glucose oxidase was immobilized in this matrix to demonstrate its application. The characteristics of the biosensor were studied by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry. The biosensor exhibited a series of good properties: high sensitivity (600 nA mmol(-1)L(-1)), short response time (11 s) and remarkable long-term stability in storage (at least 5 months). In addition, the characteristics of the second-generation biosensor with the use of tetrathiafulvalene as a mediator mere discussed.

Endohedral metallofullerenes Tb@C-2n were synthesized and extracted with high-yield by K-H carbon-are evaporation and an effective pyridine extraction technique at high-temperature high-pressure. Laser-desorption-ionization time-of-flight (LD-TOF) mass spectrometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), solid-state fluorescent emission spectroscopy and gas phase derivation reaction with the self-chemical ionization mass spectrometric ion system of vinyl acetate were employed for studying the electronic structures, fluorescent properties and gas phase reactivities of metallofullerenes Tb@C-2n. The experimental results suggest that endohedral metallofullerenes Tb@C-2n would have the approximate structures of Tb3+@C-2n(3-) similar to other metallofullerenes, good fluorescent emission properties and active reactivities in gas phase ion-molecular reactions.

Gas phase ion-molecular reactions of endohedral metallofullerenes with the self-chemical ionization ion system of vinyl acetate, benzene and acetone in the ion source of the mass spectrometer have been studied. Several derivatized endohedral metallofullerene cations [M@C-82-C2H3O](+), [M-2@C-80-C2H3O](+), [M@C-82-C6H6](+) and [M@C-82-CO-CH3](+) are observed as the major products. The experimental results indicate that endohedral metallofullerenes have active gas phase reactivities and can be efficiently derivatized by some small organic cations.

A poly(4-vinyl)pyridine (PVP)/Pd film electrode was constructed for the electrocatalytic detection of hydrazine. The preparation of the PVP/GC electrode was performed by electropolymerization of the monomer 4-vinylpyridine onto the surface of a glassy carbon electrode. Subsequently, palladium is electrodeposited onto the polymer modified electrode surface. The ion-exchange function of PVP polymer is helpful to this process in view of the tetrachlorapalladate anion. Compared with the Pd/GC electrode, the modified electrode displays a better mechanical stability in a flowing stream. The PVP/Pd film electrode exhibits higher sensitivity when detecting hydrazine with a detection limit of 0.026 ng (S/N=3).

Endohedral metallofullerenes Ce@C-82, Ce-2@C-80, Nd@C-82 and Nd-2@C-80 undergo gas phase ion/molecule reactions with the ion system from self-chemical ionization of vinyl acetate, and exohedral derivatives are thus generated, A new heterocycle is formed from metallofullerenes and a C2H3O+ cation, Endohedral metallofullerenes show much higher reactivities than empty fullerenes during the association and the charge and proton transfer processes, The strong electron-donating character of endohedral metallofullerenes is due to their unique super-atom-like electronic structures. Application of the Sanchez-Lacombe lattice fluid theory to the system pvme/ps and model calculations
Resumo:
Cloud point curves reported in the literature for five representatives of the system poly(vinyl methyl ether)/polystyrene were evaluated theoretically by means of the Sanchez-Lacombe lattice fluid theory. The measured phase separation behavior can be described within experimental error using only one adjustable parameter (quantifying the interaction between the unlike mers). The Flory-Huggins interaction parameters calculated from this theoretical description depend in good approximation linearly on composition (volume fractions) and on the inverse temperature. An evaluation of these data yields a maximum heat effect which is almost one order of magnitude less (ca. -0.25 J/cm(3)) than obtained via Hess's cycle (dissolution of the components and of the blend) from calorimetric measurements. Model calculations on the basis of the present theory demonstrate that the critical points shift to a different extent upon a certain relative change in the molar mass of the blend components. The sensitivity of the calculated phase diagrams against changes in the scaling parameter decreases in the following order: interaction energies between unlike mers, differences in the scaling temperatures, pressures and densities.
