The rheology of a poly(alpha-olefin) base oil (PAO) in a sliding point contact has been investigated by total internal reflection (TIR) Raman spectroscopy. TIR Raman has the sensitivity to analyse nanometer-thick lubricant films in a tribological contact. The Raman signal generated from the sliding contact was used to determine the lubricant film thickness. The experimentally obtained film thicknesses were compared with theoretical calculations and a transition from Newtonian to non-Newtonian behaviour was observed at high shear rates. The Raman spectra showed no significant changes in the conformation of the PAO chains under the applied conditions of pressure and shear, but the polarisation dependence of the spectra revealed a preferred orientation of the hydrocarbon side chains in the shear-thinned region. Monolayers formed by a boundary lubricant, arachidic acid, dissolved in the PAO could be detected on the surfaces in the elastohydrodynamic regime.

Early diagnosis of disease is important, because therapeutic intervention is most successful before it spread to the subject. The best health screenings method could be the blood test because the blood contains thousands of bio-molecules coming as by-products from the diseased part of the organism and would be non-invasive approach. The major limitation of this approach is the very low concentrations of the analytes need to be detected. Raman spectroscopy has been proven as one of the cutting edge technique applied in the field of histology, cytology and clinical chemistry. The primary obstacle of Raman spectroscopy is the low signal intensities. One of the promising approaches to overcome that is surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) which has opened novel opportunities for chemical and biomedical analytics. Albumin is one of the most abundant proteins in blood, produced by liver. The state of albumin in serum determines the health of the liver and kidney. Serum albumin helps to transport many small molecules such as fatty acids, bilirubin, calcium, drugs through the blood. In this study, SERS is being used for the quantification and to understand of binding mechanism serum albumin.

We report inelastic light scattering studies on Ca(Fe0.97Co0.03)(2)As-2 in a wide spectral range of 120-5200 cm(-1) from 5 to 300 K, covering the tetragonal to orthorhombic structural transition as well as magnetic transition at T-sm similar to 160 K. The mode frequencies of two first-order Raman modes B-1g and E-g, both involving the displacement of Fe atoms, show a sharp increase below T-sm. Concomitantly, the linewidths of all the first-order Raman modes show anomalous broadening below T-sm, attributed to strong spin-phonon coupling. The high frequency modes observed between 400 and 1200 cm(-1) are attributed to electronic Raman scattering involving the crystal field levels of d-orbitals of Fe2+. The splitting between xz and yz d-orbital levels is shown to be similar to 25 meV, which increases as temperature decreases below T-sm. A broad Raman band observed at similar to 3200 cm(-1) is assigned to two-magnon excitation of the itinerant Fe 3d antiferromagnet.

Using a diagrammatic superoperator formalism we calculate optical signals at molecular junctions where a single molecule is coupled to two metal leads which are held at different chemical potentials. The molecule starts in a nonequilibrium steady state whereby it continuously exchanges electrons with the leads with a constant electron flux. Expressions for frequency domain optical signals measured in response to continuous laser fields are derived by expanding the molecular correlation functions in terms of its many-body states. The nonunitary evolution of molecular states is described by the quantum master equation. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

Fe0.05Co0.95Sb2.875Te0.125, a double-element-substituted skutterudite, was prepared by induction melting, annealing, and hot pressing (HP). The hot-pressed sample was subjected to high-pressure torsion (HPT) with 4 GPa pressure at 673 K. X-ray diffraction was performed before and after HPT processing of the sample; the skutterudite phase was observed as a main phase, but an additional impurity phase (CoSb2) was observed in the HPT-processed sample. Surface morphology was determined by high-resolution scanning electron microscopy. In the HP sample, coarse grains with sizes in the range of approximately 100 nm to 300 nm were obtained. They changed to fine grains with a reduction in grain size to 75 nm to 125 nm after HPT due to severe plastic deformation. Crystallographic texture, as measured by x-ray diffraction, indicated strengthening of (112), (102) poles and weakening of the (123) pole of the HPT-processed sample. Raman-active vibrational modes showed a peak position shift towards the lower energy side, indicating softening of the modes after HPT. The distortion of the rectangular Sb-Sb rings leads to broadening of Sb-Sb vibrational modes due to local strain fluctuation. In the HPT process, a significant effect on the shorter Sb-Sb bond was observed as compared with the longer Sb-Sb bond.

We report inelastic light scattering experiments on superconductor Ce0.6Y0.4FeAsO0.8F0.2 from 4K to 300K covering the superconducting transition temperature T-c similar to 48.6K. A strong evidence of the superconductivity induced phonon renormalization for the A(1g) phonon mode near 150cm(-1) associated with the Ce/Y vibrations is observed as reflected in the anomalous red-shift and decrease in the linewidth below T-c. Invoking the coupling of this mode with the superconducting gap, the superconducting gap (2 Delta) at zero temperature is estimated to be similar to 20meV i.e the ratio 2 Delta(0)/k(B)T(c) is similar to 5, suggesting Ce0.6Y0.4FeAsO0.8F0.2 to belong to the class of strong coupling superconductors. In addition, the mode near 430cm(-1) associated with Ce3+ crystal field excitation also shows anomalous increase in its linewidth below T-c suggesting strong coupling between crystal field excitation and the superconducting quasi-particles.

A systematic study of Raman spectra on Yttrium doped NdMnO3 polycrystalline samples was undertaken to understand the lattice dynamics in this compound. Raman active phonons were analyzed and the observed peak were assigned to elucidate various phonon modes in the range (200 - 800) cm(-1). It was observed that at 325 cm(-1) phonon frequency shifts upward as much as upto 4 % with increase in Yttrium content. Lattice distortions manifest themselves by frequency shifts in both bending and tilt modes of MnO6 octahedra, resulting in increase of Raman band line-widths.

We report on Raman and Ni K-edge x-ray absorption investigations of a NiS2-xSex (with x = 0.00, 0.50/0.55, 0.60, and 1.20) pyrite family. The Ni K-edge absorption edge shows a systematic shift going from an insulating phase (x = 0.00 and 0.50) to a metallic phase (x = 0.60 and 1.20). The near-edge absorption features show a clear evolution with Se doping. The extended x-ray absorption fine structure data reveal the evolution of the local structure with Se doping which mainly governs the local disorder. We also describe the decomposition of the NiS2-xSex Raman spectra and investigate the weights of various phonon modes using Gaussian and Lorentzian profiles. The effectiveness of the fitting models in describing the data is evaluated by means of Bayes factor estimation. The Raman analysis clearly demonstrates the disorder effects due to Se alloying in describing the phonon spectra of NiS2-xSex pyrites.

The stress states in Si particles of cast Al-Si based alloys depend on its morphology and the heat treatment given to the alloy. The Si particles fracture less on modification and fracture more in the heat treated condition. An attempt has been made in this work to study the effect of heat treatment and Si modification on the stress states of the particles. Such understanding will be valuable for predicting the ductility of the alloy. The stress states of Si particles are estimated by Raman technique and compared with the microstructure-based FEM simulations. Combination of Electron Back-Scattered Diffraction (EBSD) and frequency shift, polarized micro-Raman technique is applied to determine the stress states in Si particles with (111) orientations. Stress states are measured in the as-received state and under uniaxial compression. The residual stress, the stress in the elastic-plastic regime and the stress which causes fracture of the particles is estimated by Raman technique. FEM study demonstrates that the stress distribution is uniform in modified Si, whereas the unmodified Si shows higher and more complex stress states. The onset of plastic flow is observed at sharp corners of the particles and is followed by localization of strain between particles. Clustering of particles generates more inhomogeneous plastic strain in the matrix. Particle stress estimated by Raman technique is in agreement with FEM calculations. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. SERS substrate was fabricated by depositing silver on anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) template. The thickness of the AA0 template was 200 nm with 40 nm circular pore and 15 nm spacing. SERS effect was observed on these metal coated structures due to electric field enhancement around the edge of the pores. Para-Nitrophenol (pnp) solution of 10(-6) M concentration was detected which refers to an enhancement factor of 10(4).

Solvent effects play a vital role in various chemical, physical, and biological processes. To gain a fundamental understanding of the solute-solvent interactions and their implications on the energy level re-ordering and structure, UV-VIS absorption, resonance Raman spectroscopic, and density functional theory calculation studies on 9,10-phenanthrenequinone (PQ) in different solvents of diverse solvent polarity has been carried out. The solvatochromic analysis of the absorption spectra of PQ in protic dipolar solvents suggests that the longest (1n-pi(1)*; S-1 state) and the shorter (1 pi-pi(1)*; S-2 state) wavelength band undergoes a hypsochromic and bathochromic shift due to intermolecular hydrogen bond weakening and strengthening, respectively. It also indicates that hydrogen bonding plays a major role in the differential solvation of the S-2 state relative to the ground state. Raman excitation profiles of PQ (400-1800 cm(-1)) in various solvents followed their corresponding absorption spectra therefore the enhancements on resonant excitation are from single-state rather than mixed states. The hyperchromism of the longer wavelength band is attributed to intensity borrowing from the nearby allowed electronic transition through vibronic coupling. Computational calculation with C-2 nu symmetry constraint on the S-2 state resulted in an imaginary frequency along the low-frequency out-of-plane torsional modes involving the C=O site and therefore, we hypothesize that this mode could be involved in the vibronic coupling. Myopathies are among the major causes of mortality in the world. There is no complete cure for this heterogeneous group of diseases, but a sensitive, specific, and fast diagnostic tool may improve therapy effectiveness. In this study, Raman spectroscopy is applied to discriminate between muscle mutants in Drosophila on the basis of associated changes at the molecular level. Raman spectra were collected from indirect flight muscles of mutants, upheld1 (up1), heldup(2) (hdp(2)), myosin heavy chain7 (Mhc7), actin88F(KM88) (Act88F(KM88)), upheld101 (up101), and Canton-S (CS) control group, for both 2 and 12 days old flies. Difference spectra (mutant minus control) of all the mutants showed an increase in nucleic acid and beta-sheet and/or random coil protein content along with a decrease in a-helix protein. Interestingly, the 12th day samples of up1 and Act88F(KM88) showed significantly higher levels of glycogen and carotenoids than CS. A principal components based linear discriminant analysis classification model was developed based on multidimensional Raman spectra, which classified the mutants according to their pathophysiology and yielded an overall accuracy of 97% and 93% for 2 and 12 days old flies, respectively. The up1 and Act88F(KM88) (nemaline-myopathy) mutants form a group that is clearly separated in a linear discriminant plane from up101 and hdp2 (cardiomyopathy) mutants. Notably, Raman spectra from a human sample with nemaline-myopathy formed a cluster with the corresponding Drosophila mutant (up1). In conclusion, this is the first demonstration in which myopathies, despite their heterogeneity, were screened on the basis of biochemical differences using Raman spectroscopy.

Temperature-dependent Raman and dielectric measurements have been carried out on (C2H5NH3)(2)CdCl4 single crystals. Raman studies reveal the presence of two structural phase transitions below room temperature at 216 K and 114 K. The phase transitions are marked by anomalies in temperature dependence of wave-number and full width half maximum (FWHM) of several vibrational modes. The transitions are also accompanied by anomalies in dielectric measurements. Raman and dielectric data indicate that the transition at 216 K is order-disorder in nature and is driven by re-orientation of organic ions, while the transition at 114 K is due to coupling between the CdCl6 octahedron and the organic chain. Further high temperature dielectric measurements reveal the presence of one more structural phase transition around 473 K across which dispersion in dielectric parameters is observed. The activation energies and relaxation time obtained for high temperature dielectric phases are characteristic of combined reorientation motions of alkyl ammonium cations.
