Yttrium oxide (Y203) thin films have been deposited by radio frequency plasma assisted metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) process using (2,2,6,6-tetramethy1-3,5-heptanedionate) yttrium (commonly known as Y(thd)3) precursor in a plasma of argon and oxygen gases at a substrate temperature of 350 C. The films have been deposited under influence of varying RF self-bias (-50 V to 175 V) on silicon, quartz, stainless steel and tantalum substrates. The deposited coatings are characterized by glancing angle X-ray diffraction (GIXRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), spectroscopic ellipsometry and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). GIXRD and FTIR results indicate deposition of Y2 03 (BCC structure) in all cases. However, XPS results indicate nonstoichiometric cubic phase deposition on the surface of deposited films. The degree of nonstoichiometry varies with bias during deposition. Ellipsometry results indicate that the refractive index for the deposited films is varying from 1.70 to 1.83 that is typical for Y203. All films are transparent in the investigated wavelength range 300-1200 nm. SEM results indicate that the microstructure of the films is changing with applied bias. Results indicate that it is possible to deposit single phase cubic Y203 thin films at low substrate temperature by RF plasma MOCVD process. RF self-bias that decides about the energy of impinging ions on the substrates plays an important role in controlling the texture of deposited Y203 films on the substrates. Results indicate that to control the structure of films and its texture, it is important to control the bias on the substrate during deposition. The films deposited at high bias level show degradation in the crystallinity and reduction of thickness. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Generalized spatial modulation (GSM) is a relatively new modulation scheme for multi-antenna wireless communications. It is quite attractive because of its ability to work with less number of transmit RF chains compared to traditional spatial multiplexing (V-BLAST system). In this paper, we show that, by using an optimum combination of number of transmit antennas (N-t) and number of transmit RF chains (N-rf), GSM can achieve better throughput and/or bit error rate (BER) than spatial multiplexing. First, we quantify the percentage savings in the number of transmit RF chains as well as the percentage increase in the rate achieved in GSM compared to spatial multiplexing; 18.75% savings in number of RF chains and 9.375% increase in rate are possible with 16 transmit antennas and 4-QAM modulation. A bottleneck, however, is the complexity of maximum-likelihood (ML) detection of GSM signals, particularly in large MIMO systems where the number of antennas is large. We address this detection complexity issue next. Specifically, we propose a Gibbs sampling based algorithm suited to detect GSM signals. The proposed algorithm yields impressive BER performance and complexity results. For the same spectral efficiency and number of transmit RF chains, GSM with the proposed detection algorithm achieves better performance than spatial multiplexing with ML detection.

Thin films of nanocrystalline MgO were deposited on glass/Si substrates by rf/dc sputtering from metallic Mg, and ceramic MgO targets. The purpose of this study is to identify the differences in the properties, magnetic in particular, of MgO films obtained on sputter deposition from 99.99% pure metallic Mg target in a controlled Nitrogen + Oxygen partial pressure (O(2)pp)] atmosphere as against those deposited using an equally pure ceramic MgO target in argon + identical oxygen ambience conditions while maintaining the same total pressure in the chamber in both cases. Characterization of the films was carried out by X-ray diffraction, focussed ion beam cross sectioning, atomic force microscopy and SQUID-magnetometry. The `as-obtained' films from pure Mg target are found to be predominantly X-ray amorphous, while the ceramic MgO target gives crystalline films, (002) oriented with respect to the film plane. The films consisted of nano-crystalline grains of size in the range of about 0.4 to 4.15 nm with the films from metallic target being more homogeneous and consisting of mostly subnanometer grains. Both the types of films are found to be ferromagnetic to much above room temperature. We observe unusually high maximum saturation magnetization (MS) values of 13.75 emu/g and similar to 4.2 emu/g, respectively for the MgO films prepared from Mg, and MgO targets. The origin of magnetism in MgO films is attributed to Mg vacancy (V-Mg), and 2p holes localized on oxygen sites. The role of nitrogen in enhancing the magnetic moments is also discussed.

This paper presents a technique to vary the electric field within a cylindrical ion trap (CIT) mass spectrometer while it is in operation. In this technique, the electrodes of the CIT are split into number of mini-electrodes and different voltages are applied to these split-electrodes to achieve the desired field. In our study we have investigated two geometries of the split-electrode CIT. In the first, we retain the flat endcap electrodes of the CIT but split the ring electrode into five mini-rings. In the second configuration, we split the ring electrode of the CIT into three mini-rings and also divide the endcaps into two mini-discs. By applying different potentials to the mini-rings and mini-discs of these geometries we have shown that the field within the trap can be optimized to desired values. In our study, two different types of fields were targeted. In the first, potentials were adjusted to obtain a linear electric field and, in the second, a controlled higher order even multipole field was obtained by adjusting the potential. We have shown that the different potentials required can be derived from a single RF generator by connecting appropriate capacitor terminations to split electrodes. The field within the trap can be modified by changing the values of the external capacitors. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Hit-to-kill interception of high velocity spiraling target requires accurate state estimation of relative kinematic parameters describing spiralling motion. In this pa- per, spiraling target motion is captured by representing target acceleration through sinusoidal function in inertial frame. A nine state unscented Kalman filter (UKF) formulation is presented here with three relative positions, three relative velocities, spiraling frequency of target, inverse of ballistic coefficient and maneuvering coef-ficient. A key advantage of the target model presented here is that it is of generic nature and can capture spiraling as well as pure ballistic motions without any change of tuning parameters. Extensive Six-DOF simulation experiments, which includes a modified PN guidance and dynamic inversion based autopilot, show that near Hit-to-Kill performance can be obtained with noisy RF seeker measurements of gimbal angles, gimbal angle rates, range and range rate.

The present experimental study investigates the influence of post-deposition annealing on the transverse piezoelectric coefficient (d(31)) value of ZnO thin films deposited on a flexible metal alloy substrate, and its relationship with the vibration sensing performance. Highly c-axis oriented and crystalline ZnO thin films were deposited on flexible Phynox alloy substrate via radio frequency (RF) reactive magnetron sputtering. ZnO thin film samples were annealed at different temperatures ranging from 100 degrees C to 500 degrees C, resulting in the temperature of 300 degrees C determined as the optimum annealing temperature. The crystallinity, morphology, microstructure, and rms surface roughness of annealed ZnO thin films were systematically investigated by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), respectively. The piezoelectric d(31) coefficient value was measured by 4-point bending method. ZnO thin film annealed at 300 degrees C was highly c-axis oriented, crystalline, possesses fine surface morphology with uniformity in the grain size. This film showed higher d(31) coefficient value of 7.2 pm V-1. A suitable in-house designed and developed experimental set-up, for evaluating the vibration sensing performance of annealed ZnO thin films is discussed. As expected the ZnO thin film annealed at 300 degrees C showed relatively better result for vibration sensing studies. It generates comparatively higher peak output voltage of 147 mV, due to improved structural and morphological properties, and higher piezoelectric d(31) coefficient value. (C) 2014 Elsevier B. V. Vacancy, void incorporation and Si-H-x configuration in hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) thin films was studied. Films were grown by Direct Current (DC), pulsed DC and Radio Frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic analysis has been carried out on the films and found that, the a-Si: H films grown by DC magnetron sputtering are of good quality compared to pulsed DC and RF deposited films. The effect of Substrate temperature (T-S) on the total hydrogen concentration (C-H), configuration of hydrogen bonding, density (decided by the vacancy and void incorporation) and the microstructure factor (R*) was studied. T-S is found to be an active parameter in affecting the above said properties of the films. The films contain both vacancies and voids. At low hydrogen dilutions the films are vacancy dominated and at high hydrogen dilutions they are void dominated. It is found that T-S favors monohydride (Si-H) bonding at the cost of dihydride (Si-H-2) bonding. This dividing line is at C-H=14 at.% H for DC sputter deposited films. The microstructure structure factor R* is found to be zero for as deposited DC films at T-S=773K. The threshold C-H for void dominated region is found to be C-H=23 at.% H for RF, C-H=18 at.% H for PDC and C-H similar to 14 at.%H for DC sputter deposited films.

We report on the systematic comparative study of highly c-axis oriented and crystalline piezoelectric ZnO thin films deposited on four different flexible substrates for vibration sensing application. The flexible substrates employed for present experimental study were namely a metal alloy (Phynox), metal (aluminum), polyimide (Kapton), and polyester (Mylar). ZnO thin films were deposited by an RF reactive magnetron sputtering technique. ZnO thin films of similar thicknesses of 700 +/- 30 nm were deposited on four different flexible substrates to have proper comparative studies. The crystallinity, surface morphology, chemical composition, and roughness of ZnO thin films were evaluated by respective material characterization techniques. The transverse piezoelectric coefficient (d(31)) value for assessing the piezoelectric property of ZnO thin films on different flexible substrates was measured by a four-point bending method. ZnO thin films deposited on Phynox alloy substrate showed relatively better material characterization results and a higher piezoelectric d(31) coefficient value as compared to ZnO films on metal and polymer substrates. In order to experimentally verify the above observations, vibration sensing studies were performed. As expected, the ZnO thin film deposited on Phynox alloy substrate showed better vibration sensing performance. It has generated the highest peak to peak output voltage amplitude of 256 mV as compared to that of aluminum (224 mV), Kapton (144 mV), and Mylar (46 mV). Therefore, metal alloy flexible substrate proves to be a more suitable, advantageous, and versatile choice for integrating ZnO thin films as compared to metal and polymer flexible substrates for vibration sensing applications. The present experimental study is extremely important and helpful for the selection of a suitable flexible substrate for various applications in the field of sensor and actuator technology.

This paper explains the reason behind pull-in time being more than pull-up time of many Radio Frequency Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (RF MEMS) switches at actuation voltages comparable to the pull-in voltage. Analytical expressions for pull-in and pull-up time are also presented. Experimental data as well as finite element simulations of electrostatically actuated beams used in RF-MEMS switches show that the pull-in time is generally more than the pull-up time. Pull-in time being more than pull-up time is somewhat counter-intuitive because there is a much larger electrostatic force during pull-in than the restoring mechanical force during the release. We investigated this issue analytically and numerically using a 1D model for various applied voltages and attribute this to energetics, the rate at which the forces change with time, and softening of the overall effective stiffness of the electromechanical system. 3D finite element analysis is also done to support the 1D model-based analyses.

Alumina thin films were deposited on titanium (Ti) and fused quartz by both direct and reactive pulsed rf magnetron sputtering techniques. X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy were utilized to study the phases and surface morphology of the films. The as-deposited alumina thin films were amorphous. However, after annealing at 500 degrees C in vacuum, the crystalline peaks corresponding to the Theta (0), Delta (8) and Chi ()) alumina phases were obtained. The optical transmittance and reflectance as well as IR emittanc,e data were also evaluated for the thin films. The transmittance, e.g., (similar to 90%) of the bare quartz substrate was not changed even when the alumina thin films were deposited for an hour. However, further increase in deposition time (e.g., 7 h) of the alumina thin films showed only a marginal decrease (e.g., similar to 5%) in average transmittance of the bare quartz substrate. The direct and indirect optical band gaps and extinction coefficient of the alumina films were estimated from the transmittance spectra. The IR emittance of the Ti substrate (e.g., similar to 16%) was almost constant after depositing alumina thin films for an hour. Further increase in deposition time showed only a marginal increase (e.g., similar to 9%) in IR emittance value. Therefore, it is proposed that the alumina films developed in the present work can act as a protective cover for the Ti substrate while retaining the thermo-optical properties of the same. The nanohardness and Young's modulus of the alumina thin films were evaluated by the novel nanoindentation technique. The nanohardness was measured as similar to 6 GPa. Further, Young's modulus was evaluated as similar to 116 GPa. The magnitudes of the nanomechanical properties of the thin films were a little smaller than those reported in the literature. This was linked to the lack of crystalline phases in the as-deposited alumina thin films. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. All rights reserved.

The subiculum is a structure that forms a bridge between the hippocampus and the entorhinal cortex (EC), and plays a major role in the memory consolidation process. Here, we demonstrate spike-timing-dependent plasticity (STDP) at the proximal excitatory inputs on the subicular pyramidal neurons of juvenile rat. Causal (positive) pairing of a single EPSP with a single back-propagating action potential (bAP) after a time interval of 10 ms (+10 ms) failed to induce plasticity. However, increasing the number of bAPs in a burst to three, at two different frequencies of 50 Hz (bAP burst) and 150 Hz, induced long-term depression (LTD) after a time interval of +10 ms in both the regular-firing (RF), and the weak burst firing (WBF) neurons. The LTD amplitude decreased with increasing time interval between the EPSP and the bAP burst. Reversing the order of the pairing of the EPSP and the bAP burst induced LTP at a time interval of -10 ms. This finding is in contrast with reports at other synapses, wherein prebefore postsynaptic (causal) pairing induced LTP and vice versa. Our results reaffirm the earlier observations that the relative timing of the pre- and postsynaptic activities can lead to multiple types of plasticity profiles. The induction of timing-dependent LTD (t-LTD) was dependent on postsynaptic calcium change via NMDA receptors in the WBF neurons, while it was independent of postsynaptic calcium change, but required active L-type calcium channels in the RF neurons. Thus the mechanism of synaptic plasticity may vary within a hippocampal subfield depending on the postsynaptic neuron involved. This study also reports a novel mechanism of LTD induction, where L-type calcium channels are involved in a presynaptically induced synaptic plasticity. The findings may have strong implications in the memory consolidation process owing to the central role of the subiculum and LTD in this process.

Amorphous hydrogenated silicon (a-Si:H) is well-known material in the global semiconductor industry. The quality of the a-Si:H films is generally decided by silicon and hydrogen bonding configuration (Si-H-x, x=1,2) and hydrogen concentration (C-H). These quality aspects are correlated with the plasma parameters like ion density (N-i) and electron temperature (T-e) of DC, Pulsed DC (PDC) and RF plasmas during the sputter-deposition of a-Si:H thin films. It was found that the N-i and T-e play a major role in deciding Si-H-x bonding configuration and the C-H value in a-Si:H films. We observed a trend in the variation of Si-H and Si-H-2 bonding configurations, and C-H in the films deposited by DC, Pulsed DC and RF reactive sputtering techniques. Ion density and electron energy are higher in RF plasma followed by PDC and DC plasma. Electrons with two different energies were observed in all the plasmas. At a particular hydrogen partial pressure, RF deposited films have higher C-H followed by PDC and then DC deposited films. The maximum energy that can be acquired by the ions was found to be higher in RF plasma. Floating potential (V-f) is more negative in DC plasma, whereas, plasma potential (V-p) is found to be more positive in RF plasma. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Bi1-xCaxMnO3 (BCMO) thin films with x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4 are successfully deposited on the n-type Si (100) substrate at two different temperatures of 400 degrees C and 800 degrees C using RF magnetron sputtering. The stoichiometry of the films and oxidation state of the elements have been described by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis. Dielectric measurement depicts the insulating property of BCMO films. Magnetic and ferroelectric studies confirm the significant enhancement in spin orientation as well as electric polarization at room temperature due to incorporation of Ca2+ ions into BiMnO3 films. The BCMO (x = 0.2) film grown at 400 degrees C shows better magnetization (M-sat) and polarization (P-s) with the measured values of 869 emu / cc and 6.6 mu(C)/cm(2) respectively than the values of the other prepared films. Thus the realization of room temperature ferromagnetic and ferroelectric ordering in Ca2+ ions substituted BMO films makes potentially interesting for spintronic device applications. Package-board co-design plays a crucial role in determining the performance of high-speed systems. Although there exist several commercial solutions for electromagnetic analysis and verification, lack of Computer Aided Design (CAD) tools for SI aware design and synthesis lead to longer design cycles and non-optimal package-board interconnect geometries. In this work, the functional similarities between package-board design and radio-frequency (RF) imaging are explored. Consequently, qualitative methods common to the imaging community, like Tikhonov Regularization (TR) and Landweber method are applied to solve multi-objective, multi-variable package design problems. In addition, a new hierarchical iterative piecewise linear algorithm is developed as a wrapper over LBP for an efficient solution in the design space.

Plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposition (PECVD) of thick germanium (Ge) films (similar to 1 mu m) on silicon dioxide (SiO2) at low temperatures is described. A diborane pretreatment on SiO2 films is done to seed the Ge growth, followed by the deposition of thick Ge films using germane (GeH4) and argon (Ar). Further, the effect of hydrogen (H-2) dilution on the deposition rate is also investigated. The film thickness and morphology is characterized using SEM. Use of high RF power and substrate temperature show increased deposition rate. EDS analysis indicates that these films contain 97-98 atomic percentage of Ge. A recipe for anisotropic dry etching of the deposited Ge films with 10nm/ min etch rate is also suggested.
