It is known that tailoring a hot stamping part, to achieve locally graded properties, can improve the crash behavior. Depending on the role of the structural part (carrying either bending or axial crash load), the best position for the local regions with lower strength and higher ductility can be different. The distribution of these local regions and their mechanical properties affects the crash behavior of the part in each loading case and therefore can be effectively designed to improve the crash performance. To investigate these effects and examine the improvement possibilities, a numerical thermalmechanical-metallurgical model of a hot stamping process and a representative side impact crash model were created and analysed. The hot stamping model was used to predict the consequent phase fractions and mechanical properties of tailored hot stamping parts produced with different tailoring scenarios. In the metallurgical model, a modified phase transformation model based on Scheil’s additive principle was incorporated. The geometry and mesh of the stamped part was exported to a crash numerical model with a 3-point bending configuration. A constitutive model was used to define the plastic behavior of the stamped part corresponding to different hardness values. Various possibilities in locally positioning the high strength or high ductility zones of material were examined. The results show that the positioning of the soft zones has a more significant effect on the crash performance than the variation in their mechanical properties of these soft zones.

The use of rapid solidification processes such as direct strip casting (DSC) is a good way to refine the Fe-intermetallics and decrease their detrimental effects. DSC creates out-ofequilibrium supersaturated microstructures. In this work, we explore the precipitation phenomena in direct strip cast Al-Fe and Al-Cu-Fe alloys and related corrosion and mechanical properties. The precipitates are characterised with differential scanning calorimetry and transmission electron microscopy. The corrosion performances are evaluated with immersion tests and weight loss measurements and the yield strength and ductility are estimated with tensile tests. A strong correlation between the microstructure and the bulk properties is revealed with a significant improvement of properties of DSC alloys.

Application of damage model in combination with finite element analysis to design and optimization of equal channel angular pressing - conform of commercially pure titanium against ductile failure is demonstrated. The properties required for precise simulation of the process and prediction of damage accumulation (equivalent stress as function of equivalent strain and temperature and low bound ductility function) are obtained in the temperature interval 20-400 °C and described in details.

Aluminium-titanium (Al/Ti) composite sheets were fabricated via asymmetric accumulative roll bonding (AARB), which capitalises on additional shear to enhance plastic deformation. Multi-layers of Al alloy (AA1050) and commercially-pure Ti sheets were alternatively stacked and rolled-bonded with varied roll diameter ratios (dr) ranging from 1 to 2, for up to four passes. Annealing of selected composite sheets was subsequently carried out at 600°C for 24h to compare the rates of solid-state diffusion reactions between Al and Ti components. Mechanical tests revealed that both tensile strength and ductility of the sheets increase systematically with dr. The microstructures and the Al/Ti interfaces of the sheets were analysed in detail using TEM, SEM and FIB techniques. It is shown that not only does AARB lead to a more refined grain size of the Al matrix but also it promotes the development of a nanostructured surface layer on Ti that comprises crystallites of 50-100nm in size, which is otherwise absent in the case of symmetric ARB (i.e. dr=1). The AARB-processed sheets exhibit a larger thickness of the interdiffusion layer at the Al/Ti interfaces than the counterparts processed via the symmetric ARB route, the difference being in excess of 15%. The effects and the implications of AARB processing on mechanical behaviour and diffusion kinetics are discussed with respect to the microstructural evolutions.

Al and Mg machining chip blends were compacted by equal-channel angular pressing with back pressure. By varying the weight fraction of the constituent materials, temperature and processing route, as well as employing subsequent heat treatment, the microstructure and the mechanical properties of the compact were varied. The width of the interdiffusion zone and the formation of intermetallic phases near the interfaces between the two metals were studied by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and nanoindentation. It was shown that substantial improvement of mechanical properties, such as an increase of strength, strain-hardening capability and ductility, can be obtained. This is achieved by changing the processing parameters of equal-channel angular pressing and the annealing temperature, as well as by optimising the weight fraction of the constituent metals. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media New York.

It is generally believed that thermo-hydrogen processing has a beneficial effect on tensile ductility and fatigue properties of titanium. This study was concerned with investigating whether this also applies to titanium of commercial purity (CP) with an ultrafine-grained structure obtained by equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP). It was shown that despite the possibility to manipulate the microstructure of titanium the thermo-hydrogen processing offers, temporary hydrogenation was not able to improve ductility and low cycle fatigue life of CP titanium over the levels achievable by straight ECAP.

In ultrafine-grained (UFG) materials produced by severe plastic deformation (SPD) techniques such as ECAP (equal channel angular pressing), bimodal grain size distributions have been observed under different circumstances, for example shortly after ECAP, after rest or anneal and/or after mild cyclic deformation at rather low homologous temperature. It has been shown that the mechanical monotonic and fatigue properties of some UFG materials can be modified (sometimes enhanced) by introducing a bimodal grain size distribution by a mild annealing treatment which leads, in some cases, to a good combination of strength and ductility. Here, the conditions under which bimodal grain size distributions evolve by (adiabatic) heating during ECAP and during subsequent annealing or cyclic deformation will be explored, and the effects on the mechanical properties, as studied by the authors and as reported so far in the literature, will be reviewed and discussed. In particular, the role of temperature rise during ECAP will be considered in some detail.

A novel ultra-high strength TRIP (transformation induced plasticity) steel, with ~1.5. GPa strength and good ductility of ~26% has been produced. The microstructure consists of ultrafine ferrite, and a large volume fraction of austenite. The flow stress was significantly increased by a reduction in the grain size, but the effect of strain rate on the flow stress was negligible. The formation of stress induced martensite was found to increase linearly with strain, and a reduction in the grain size correlated with an increase in the stress required to form the martensite.

Microstructure evolution, mechanical properties, formability, and texture development were determined for AA6111 samples processed by asymmetric rolling (ASR) with different roll friction, velocity, or diameters, conventional rolling (CR), and equal-channel-angular pressing (ECAP). Highly elongated or sheared grain structures were developed during ASR/CR and ECAP, respectively. ASR led to improved r-values and formability compared with CR primarily as a result of the development of moderate shear-texture components analogous to those developed during ECAP of billet material. ASR based on different roll diameters gave the best combination of strength, ductility, and formability.

The characterisation of strain path with respect to the directionality of defect formation is discussed. The criterion of non-monotonic strain path is used in the scalar and tensor models for damage accumulation and recovery. Comparable analysis of models and their verification has been obtained by simulation of crack initiation in a two-stage metal forming operation consisting of wire drawing followed by constrained upsetting.

Mechanical and physical properties of polypropylene (PP)/polystyrene (PS) blend, PP/PS/polystyrene-block-poly(ethylene-ran-butylene)-block-polystyrene (SEBS) ternary blend and their composites with carbon nanofibers (CNF) were investigated. Composites of ternary blend exhibited superior properties compared to those of binary blends. Mechanical performance of nanocomposites was intimately related to their phase morphology. PP/PS/SEBS/0.1 wt% CNF hybrid composites exhibited excellent impact strength (Four-fold increase compared to PP/PS blend) and ductility (12-fold increase in elongation at break, with respect to PP/PS blend). Moreover, these composites displayed good tensile strength and modulus (15% increase in Young's modulus, compared to PP/PS/SEBS blend) and are suitable for various end-use applications including automobile applications. Although crystallinity of PP phase is decreased by the incorporation of CNF, thermal stability of the composites remained almost unaffected. Contact angle measurements revealed that ternary composites exhibited maximum hydrophobicity.

 Strengthened concrete structures using advanced materials such as CFRP composites has been proved an efficient technique. The bonding agent (epoxy resin) used to bond the CFRP composites with the concrete structures is the main parameter that contributes to premature failure. I was able to recommend to a new modified epoxy resin to enhance the general behavior of the strengthened concrete structure with respect to durability and ductility.

Ultra-high strength steel sheets have been subjected to heat treatments that simulate the thermal cycles in hot-dip galvanising and galvannealing processes and evaluated with respect to their resulting mechanical properties and microstructures. The steels contained suitable contents of carbon (∼0.2%), manganese (1.2%) and chromium (0.4%) to ensure that they could be fully transformed to martensite after austenitisation followed by rapid cooling in a continuous annealing line, prior to galvanising. Different contents of vanadium (0–0.1%) and nitrogen (0.002–0.012%) were used to investigate the possible role of these microalloying elements on the strength of the tempered martensite. Vanadium, especially when in combination with a raised nitrogen content, helps to resist the effect of tempering so that a larger proportion of the initial strengthening is preserved after the galvanising cycle, giving tensile strength levels exceeding 1000 MPa. Different deoxidation practices using aluminium or silicon have also been included. These showed similar strength levels at corresponding carbon contents but the bendability of the Si-killed steel sheet was considerably superior. Microstructural examinations have been made on the annealed steels but the reason for the beneficial effect of vanadium is still not fully explained. It is concluded that microalloying with vanadium is a very promising approach in the development of corrosion-resistant ultra-high strength steel sheet products.

It is known that tailored hot stamped parts, which have locally graded properties, can improve car crashworthiness. In this experimental study, a heated tool was used to decrease the temperature difference between the hot blank and the tool which led to lower cooling rates and softer properties. First, a flat heated tool was used to investigate the effects of process parameters on metallurgical and mechanical properties. Based on the range of parameters examined, press force and quenching time did not have a significant effect on the post-formed mechanical properties. In the next step, a hatshaped channel tool with heating system was used to produce tailored hot stamping parts. The results show considerable differences between hardness values of the top and side faces in the soft section, while the hardness was almost uniform in the hard section. These experimental results generally compare well with the results of previous numerical parametric studies performed by the authors, which identified less robustness of the tailored hot stamping process compared to conventional hot stamping.
