This study deals with mastodont teeth found near Lisbon in Lower Langhian (lower Middle Miocene) fluviatile, feldspathic sands (Vb division). Conclusions are as follows: 1. Tetralophodont molars (even if at a still primitive stade of the tetralophodont condition) do exist at least since lower Langhian times, and not only since late Middle Miocene as was previously known. 2. Tri- and tetralophodont structures may (and indeed do) coexist in the same individual: such examples do not correspond to transitional forms, but instead to a mosaic of juxtaposed characters (however this does not mean there are no transitional forms in other instances). 3. So these structures coexisted in a population not yet geneticaliy separated beyond fertile cross-breeding, i.e. beyond species'level. 4. Origin of the tetralophodont molar was due to some mutation (s). but without crossing species, limits and even more genus' ones. 5. At this times probably soon after the first appearance of tetralophodont mutants, animals with such characters were a small but signifiant minority among the population (17% if account is taken on D4's: only 2% after M2's). 6. There was not then any direct and clear correlation between number of lophs (transversal crests) and tooth size, even if the increase of such number goes along with length's increase. 7. Dimensions (length in special) in tetralophodont teeth tend to exceed those in «normal» trilophodont teeth, this being particularly clear in D4, even if there is no clear distinction: the situation is quite the same, maybe less marked, with the M2. 8. According to the preceding conclusions there are no reasons to segregate different taxa among such mastodont population on the grounds of the presence in D4, M1 and M2 of 3 or 4 crests (this character being regarded as diagnostic of the genus Tetralophodon). 9. On the contrary, if any natural (in biological sense) classification is disregarded and a morphological parataxonomy is adopted there should be considered both Gomphotherium angustidens and Tetralophodon sp.: however this is absolutely not our opinion.

This study on middle Miocene Charophytes from the Tagus' basin indicates the presence of two species, hitherto undescribed from these strata in Portugal. Correlation diagrams of height and width of gyrogonite demonstrate that the populations of Nitellopsis (Tectochara) etrusca from the localities Póvoa de Santarém and Pêro Filho are identical to that from La Grenatière (Hérault, France), The population of Lychnothamnus duplicicarinatus from Tremês is identical to that already known from Anwill (Switzerland). The age of this flora is therefore suggested as being the upper part of the middle Miocene. The results of Charophyte studies are in accordance with stratigraphical conclusions from previously conducted mammalian studies (Antunes and Mein). A table showing the distribution of species in the three portuguese localities is given.

The lignite-clays of Póvoa de Santarém dated as Upper «Vindobonian» (mammalian zone MN6), fielded abundant remains of animals and plants (spores, pollens, seeds, etc.). The forms identified are indicative of several environments. Plants, either aquatic or belonging to swampy areas are predominant (Nuphar sp., Sparganium sp., Stratiotes kaltennordheimensis, cf. Ranunculus sp.). There are also remains of plants characteristiques of a humid rather than a swampy soil such as Polypodiaceae, Myrica ceriferiformis, Toddalia maii, Spirematospermum wetzeleri. The genera Vitis and Ephedra, although rare, point fowards the existence of drier regions in the neighbourhood. The presence of polens such as Picea indicate the presence at some distance less warm upland forest areas.

This paper presents a resume of the results achieved by researchers of the Centro de Estratigrafia e Paleobiologia da U. N. L. on the Neogene of Algarve, since 1977. The detailed study of several profiles as well as that af calcareous nannoplanton, planktonic foraminifera, ostracoda, fishes and mammals allowed to obtain data and correlation elements leading to a new interpretation of the Miocene of Algarve. It was possible to date and to characterize the following units: a) Carbonate formation of Lagos-Portimão, of marine facies, ascribed to the Lower Miocene (Aquitanian? and mainly Burdigalian), possibly attaining the Lower Langhian. b) Essentially arenaceous series of continental facies with a marine intercalation of Arrifão, Olhos de Água and Auramar Hotel beach, middle Miocene (Langhian-Serravallian) in age. c) Marine (tripoli, conglomerates, sands and limestones) deposits of Tunes-Mem Moniz, Ponte das Lavadeiras (Faro), Arroteia (Fuzeta) and Luz de Tavira, corresponding, at least partially, to the first part of the upper Miocene (Lower Tortonian). d) Cacela formation with three members: The lower member (conglomerates and sands), the middle (yellow silts) and the upper ones (gray silts), uppermost Tortonian and mainly Messinian in age. An interpretation of the tectonic and paleogeographic evolution of the portuguese littoral during the Miocene is also presented considering its insertion in the meridional part of the Peninsula (Guadalquivir depression, Betic massif basins and in the spanish Levant in general). Comparisons among the Neogene vulcanism of this region and similar manifestations documented in Algarve (basanite of Figueira-Portimão, etc) are established.

Forty-five species of ostracoda from the Aquitanian of the Lisbon area, belonging in thirty-two genera, are presented. These are the first species belonging to this group reported for the Miocene formations in Portugal. Ostracoda assemblages are typical of fresh water, brackish and marine environments (littoral and inner continental shelf). References are made to the stratigraphically more significant species. Data on the paleoenvironments are also presented. A list of the studied species includes a comparison with their distribution in the Aquitaine and Rhone Miocene basins.

A canine tooth from Vale Furado is classified as Paralophiodon cf. leptorhynchum. The genus Paralophiodon indicates an age from Lower Lutetian to Auversian, Middle Eocene. As it belongs in the lineage of P. leptorhynchum, possible age span is furth~L~uced from Middle Lutetian to Auversian. This conclusion remains valid or nearly so even in the less probable case of confusion with some form included in P. isselensis lineage. Our previous (1975) datation for sandstones and pelites from Vale Furado is thus confirmed, and more accurately recognized. Paralophiodon and the crocodilian Iberosuchus are a rather sound basis for correlation with stratigraphical units near Zamora and Salamanca in Spain.

These work presents the quantitative and qualitative inventory and the stratigraphic distribution of fossil plants (spores, pollens, sterns, leaves and seeds) recognized the Miocene of the portuguese part of Tagus basin. For each lithostratigraphic unit, associations with ecological (paleoclimatic) meaning are defined. It was also possible to follow the evolution of the vegetation and the climate during the considered cronostratigraphic interval which includes most of the Miocene (Aquitanian to lower-middle Tortonian).

The Middle Liassic outcrops of the Coimbra region (Portugal) show, at Carixian-Domerian boundary, an unusual high frequence of the Falsopalmula, morphogenus, that is generally well represented in the Lower Toarcian. The study of the Nodosaridea association shows that the massive presence of this morphogenus excludes the Lenticulina s. st. genus. These faunistic particularities should be ascribed to the environment and to the sedimentation pattern. The development of the Falsopalmula morphogenus should have been simultaneous to that of the pelitic sedimentation.

New elements about the stratigraphy of the Serra de Candeeiros Dogger and Lower «Lusitanian» are presented. The Lower Aalenian was recognized for the first time. Bathonian (more than 50 metres thick) is dated on brachiopods and foraminifera. It corresponds to a series of massive micritic, biodetritical, coral-reef, chaetetid, bryozoa and oolitic-limestones. Callovian (120 m) begins by whitish or yellowish limestones with ammonites and brachiopods of the Gracilis zone. It is followed by regressive limestone sequences ending with thick oncolitic layers. The «Lusitanian» base is formed by greyish lagoon brackish limestones; it lies unconformably on the Dogger, with or without angular and/or cartographic unconformity. This radical facies change is related to tectonic deformation of several blocks between the Nazaré and Tagus faults during Oxfordian times.

The study of new abundant coral crops and a systematic revision of the historic collections allow us to extend significantly the data about the Upper Oligocene and Miocene Scleractinia of the French atlantic basins. The SW and W-NW France faunas have been considered, and complete lists of the different defined taxa are presented. The generallines of the evolution of this group are specified, and linked to the paleoclimatic and paleobiogeographic changes.

The Aquitaine Basin (southwestern France) is known since long ago for its richness in marine miocene deposits of various facies. A few stratotypes concerning this period have been described in the investigated area. The stratigraphical framework has been recently revised and the study of new exposures completes our knowledge on these levels. In the present work, the authors produce a biostratigraphical distribution of about 160 species (larger and smaller foraminifera), found in the surface exposures of Aquitaine, from the topmost Oligocene (Chattian) through to Middle Miocene (including Serravallian). As a rule, the common species without significant ranges have not bcen mentioned. The microfaunas of several exposures have been thoroughly revised, which has allowed to precise the distribution of many species and induced a few modifications of the results previously produced. Synonymy problems and new taxonomical revisions have been taken into account. Of course, this work will be probably submitted to some changes according to new research on the already known exposures or other more recently discovered.

Abundant crops of Glycymeris have been made in the neritic bioclastic deposits of the Aquitaine Basin. After an outline about the Chattian taxa, the 5 Lower Miocene lineages are presented; G. cor is plainly predominant. Then, the Middle Miocene faunas are also detaiIed, G. inflatus and G. bimaculatus being the most frequent taxa. A test of biometrical analysis about the G. cor species is presented.
