Vasoactive agents were examined in arteries from control rats and rats exposed to intermittent hypoxia (10% oxygen; 8 h/day) for 3, 5 or 20 days. Hypoxic rats developed right ventricular hypertrophy after 5 days, but became pulmonary hypertensive (elevated right ventricular systolic pressure; RVSP) only after 20 days. In pulmonary arteries (main and intralobar), responses to acetylcholine and ionomycin (endothelium-dependent vasodilators) were reduced after 20 and 5 days of intermittent hypoxia, whereas contractions to 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) were enhanced (potency increase >10-fold) after 20, 5 and 3 days. Contractions to endothelin-1 and a thromboxane-mimetic, but not Ca-2divided by, were also increased. No changes in vascular function occurred in aorta. Since changes in pulmonary vascular function preceded the increase in RVSP they do not result from, but may contribute to, the development of hypoxia-induced pulmonary hypertension. If similar changes occur in humans, they may be important in conditions characterised by intermittent, as opposed to continuous, hypoxia. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Background: The surgical cure rate for primary hyperparathyroidism is greater than 95%. For those who have recurrent or persistent disease, preoperative localization improves reoperation success rates. Selective parathyroid venous sampling (SPVS) for intact parathyroid hormone is particularly useful when non-invasive localization techniques are negative or inconclusive. Methods: We present all known cases (n = 13) between 1994 and 2002 who had venous sampling for localization at our institution prior to reoperation for recurrent or persistent primary hyperparathyroidism. Comparison was made with non-invasive localization procedures. Results of invasive and non-invasive localization were correlated with surgical findings. Results: Of the nine reoperated cases, eight had positive correlations between SPVS and operative findings and histopathology. SPVS did not reveal the parathyroid hormone source in one case with negative non-invasive localization procedures. Comparisons between SPVS, computerized tomography (CT), and parathyroid scintigraphy (MIBI) as expressed in terms of true positive (TP), false positive (FP) and false negative (FN) were: SPVS - TP 88.8%, FP 0%, FN 11.1%; CT - TP 22.2%, FP 22.2%, FN 55.5%; and MIBI - TP 33.3%, FP 0%, FN 66.6%. At least seven of the nine operated cases have been cured; another remained normocalcaemic 2 weeks after subtotal parathyroidectomy. Conclusion: In our institution SPVS has proven to be a valuable tool in cases with recurrent or persistent primary hyperparathyroidism and negative non-invasive localization procedures.

The chemical properties of deep profile samples ( up to 12 m) of Ferrosols from northern Queensland were investigated to provide an understanding of the accumulation of nitrate ( NO3) within these soil profiles. The influence of other cations and anions present in the soil solution or on the exchange and the charge chemistry of the profiles were examined with respect to the NO3 accumulations. The major ions in the soil solution were Na, NO3, and chloride ( Cl). Distinct regions of anion accumulation were observed; SO4 accumulated in the upper profile of all cores, whereas NO3 and Cl accumulations were restricted to the lower profile of cores with appreciable AEC (> 1 cmol(c)/kg). Gaines-Thomas selectivity coefficients were used to indicate exchange preference for cations and anions, and are as follows: Al > Ca similar to Mg > K > Na and sulfate (SO4) > Cl similar to NO3. The selectivity of SO4 increased and the extractable SO4 decreased in the lower profile of all cores. This has important implications for the adsorption of NO3 and Cl. The NO3 and Cl accumulations were shown to correspond to a region of low SO4 occupancy of the exchange sites in the lower profile. Along with the high SO4 selectivity, this suggests that SO4 may control the positioning of the NO3 accumulations. It was concluded that the NO3 accumulations were relatively stable under current management practices, although the reduction in NO3 inputs would likely see the gradual replacement of NO3 with Cl as a result of their comparable selectivity for exchange sites.

Aluminium (At) tolerance in plants may be conferred by reduced binding of Al in the cell wall through low root cation exchange capacity (CEC) or by organic acid exudation. Root CEC is related to the degree of esterification (DE) of pectin in the cell wall, and pectin hydrolysis plays a role in cell expansion. Therefore, it was hypothesised that Al-tolerant plants with a low root CEC maintain pectin hydrolysis in the presence of Al, allowing cell expansion to continue. Irrespective of the DE, binding of Al to pectin reduced the enzymatic hydrolysis of Al-pectin gels by polygalacturonase (E.C. 3.2.1.15). Pectin gels with calcium (Ca) were slightly hydrolysed by polygalacturonase. It was concluded, therefore, that Al tolerance conferred by low root CEC is not mediated by the ability to maintain pectin hydrolysis. Citrate and malate, but not acetate, effectively dissolved Al-pectate gel and led to hydrolysis of the dissolved pectin by polygalacturonase. The organic acids did not dissolve Ca-pectate, nor did they increase pectin hydrolysis by polygalacturonase. It was concluded that exudation of some organic acids can remove Al bound to pectin and this could alleviate toxicity, constituting a tolerance mechanism. As caracterÃsticas das leguminosas e gramÃneas usadas como plantas de cobertura são bastante conhecidas, mas a velocidade com que os nutrientes associados à biomassa vegetal tornam-se disponÃveis à s culturas é ainda pouco estudada. O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar o acúmulo e a taxa de liberação de nutrientes de crotalária e milheto solteiros ou consorciados. O delineamento experimental adotado foi blocos ao acaso, com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos foram crotalária, milheto, crotalária + milheto e vegetação espontânea. O acúmulo de P e Mg foi influenciado pela produção de massa, com valores elevados na crotalária, enquanto o acúmulo de Ca resultou tanto do maior teor quanto da maior produção de massa nos tratamentos com a leguminosa. A liberação de nutrientes dos resÃduos apresentou dinâmica semelhante, com duas fases distintas: a primeira com taxas mais elevadas nos primeiros 15 dias e a segunda mais lenta a partir dessa fase. As taxas de liberação de K, Ca e Mg foram semelhantes, independentemente dos tratamentos. Os resÃduos da crotalária apresentaram maior liberação de P do que as da vegetação espontânea, com meia vida de 11 dias e a vegetação espontânea de 17 dias. O Ca foi liberado mais lentamente do que os demais nutrientes, e o Mg mais rapidamente. As plantas espontâneas e o milheto apresentam importante potencial na reciclagem de K, e a crotalária se destacou na reciclagem de Ca e Mg.

Foram constituÃdos quatro grupos de roedores silvestres para a contagem de células sangüÃneas periféricas, da seguinte forma: Grupo I - formado de animais normais, nascidos em biotério, com 30 dias de vida; Grupo II - formado de animais que foram capturados no campo e considerados não infectados com S. mansoni, após ovohelmintoscopia das fezes, realizada durante 30 dias de observação; Grupo III - animáis capturados no campo, nautralmente infectados com o esquistossomo, e o Grupo IV - de animais nascidos em biotério, com 30 dias de vida, e infectados com 150 cercárias de S. mansoni, oriundas da Região da Baixada Maranhense. Semanalmente, a partir da data da infecção, estes animais foram sangrados e tiveram suas células sangüÃneas periféricas contadas global e especificamente. Os resultados mostraram que o número de hemácias e leucócitos por mm³ não variou nos animais normais, tanto de campo como de biotério. No grupo de animais experimentalmente infectados, foi observado decréscimo do número de hemácias à proporção que a infecção evoluia. Comportamento oposto foi verificado com os leucócitos. Elevados nÃveis de eosinófilos só foram observados nos animais com infecção natural. Estes resultados foram discutidos com dados da literatura e considerados importantes para complementar as informações sobre este hospedeiro natural do trematódeo, oferecido como modelo experimental do verme, e para sua própria história natural.

Roedores silvestres, nascidos em biotério, descendentes de Holochilus b. nanus, capturados na região da Baixada Maranhense, localizada na Pré-Amazônia, foram infectados experimentalmente com Schistosoma mansoni, procedente da mesma Região, com o objetivo de verificar a influência da infecção sobre os nÃveis glicêmicos. Um grupo de roedores não infectados tiveram, também, seus nÃveis glicêmicos determinados, para o conhecimento da concentração normal de glicose. O estudo procedeu distinguindo os animais, tanto os normais quanto os infectados, por sexo, regime alimentar e idade de infecção. A quantificação da glicose sérica foi feita pelo método da Orto-Toluidina, após sangrias semanais pelo plexo oftálmico, sempre no mesmo horário. Os resultados mostraram que ocorreu elevação de pesos corporais de todos os animais normais, durante suas maturações, ao passo que, os animais infectados, tiveram seus pesos em decréscimo, durante a evolução da infecção. Os nÃveis glicêmicos estudados nos animais normais mostraram que as fêmeas possuem nÃvel mais baixo e estável do que os machos, independente de terem sido alimentados ou não. Os animais infectados aos 30 dias de vida tiveram seus nÃveis glicêmicos em declÃnio à proporção que a infecção evoluÃa, provavelmente, devido ao acometimento dos órgãos, como baço, fÃgado e pâncreas; enquanto que, os animais infectados aos 40 dias de vida, tiveram seus nÃveis de glicose, durante as 8 semanas de infecção, sem diferença significativa entre eles. O número de vermes adultos recuperados nos animais infectados com 30 dias de vida foi maior do que o número encontrado nos roedores do outro grupo. Os dados informaram, também, que, a idade ideal para a infecção deste novo modelo experimental, deva ser a de 30 dias de vida, semelhante a outros, como camundongos.

Microarray allow to monitoring simultaneously thousands of genes, where the abundance of the transcripts under a same experimental condition at the same time can be quantified. Among various available array technologies, double channel cDNA microarray experiments have arisen in numerous technical protocols associated to genomic studies, which is the focus of this work. Microarray experiments involve many steps and each one can affect the quality of raw data. Background correction and normalization are preprocessing techniques to clean and correct the raw data when undesirable fluctuations arise from technical factors. Several recent studies showed that there is no preprocessing strategy that outperforms others in all circumstances and thus it seems difficult to provide general recommendations. In this work, it is proposed to use exploratory techniques to visualize the effects of preprocessing methods on statistical analysis of cancer two-channel microarray data sets, where the cancer types (classes) are known. For selecting differential expressed genes the arrow plot was used and the graph of profiles resultant from the correspondence analysis for visualizing the results. It was used 6 background methods and 6 normalization methods, performing 36 pre-processing methods and it was analyzed in a published cDNA microarray database (Liver) available at http://genome-www5.stanford.edu/ which microarrays were already classified by cancer type. All statistical analyses were performed using the R statistical software.
Flavoured versus natural waters: macromineral (Ca, Mg, K, Na) and micromineral (Fe, Cu, Zn) contents

Macro (Ca, Mg, K, Na) and micromineral (Fe, Zn, Cu) composition of 39 waters was analysed. Determinations were made by atomic flame spectrophotometry for macrominerals and electrothermic atomisation in graphite furnace for microminerals. Mineral contents of still or sparkling natural waters (without flavours) changed from brand to brand. Mann–Whitney test was used to search for significant differences between flavoured and natural waters. For that, the concentration of each mineral was compared to the presence of flavours, preservatives, acidifying agents, fruit juice and/or sweeteners, according to the labelled composition. The statistical study demonstrated that flavoured waters generally have increased contents of K, Na, Fe and Cu. The added preservatives also led to significant differences in the mineral composition. Acidifying agents and fruit juice can also be correlated to the increase of Mg, K, Na, Fe and Cu. Sweeteners do not provide any significant difference in Ca, Mg, Fe and Zn contents.

A new species, Pokornyella lusitanica (Ostracoda), from the Lower Miocene (Aquitanian) of the Lisbon area, is described. Some palaeoecological data are presented.
Improving the IEEE 802.15.4 Slotted CSMA/CA MAC for time-critical events in wireless sensor networks

In beacon-enabled mode, IEEE 802.15.4 is ruled by the slotted CSMA/CA Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol. The standard slotted CSMA/CA mechanism does not provide any means of differentiated services to improve the quality of service for timecritical events (such as alarms, time slot reservation, PAN management messages etc.). In this paper, we present and discuss practical service differentiation mechanisms to improve the performance of slotted CSMA/CA for time-critical events, with only minor add-ons to the protocol. The contribution of our proposal is more practical than theoretical since our initial requirement is to leave the original algorithm of the slotted CSMA/CA unchanged, but rather tuning its parameters adequately according to the criticality of the messages. We present a simulation study based on an accurate model of the IEEE 802.15.4 MAC protocol, to evaluate the differentiated service strategies. Four scenarios with different settings of the slotted CSMA/CA parameters are defined. Each scenario is evaluated for FIFO and Priority Queuing. The impact of the hiddennode problem is also analyzed, and a solution to mitigate it is proposed.

In this paper, we analyze the performance limits of the slotted CSMA/CA mechanism of IEEE 802.15.4 in the beacon-enabled mode for broadcast transmissions in WSNs. The motivation for evaluating the beacon-enabled mode is due to its flexibility for WSN applications as compared to the non-beacon enabled mode. Our analysis is based on an accurate simulation model of the slotted CSMA/CA mechanism on top of a realistic physical layer, with respect to the IEEE 802.15.4 standard specification. The performance of the slotted CSMA/CA is evaluated and analyzed for different network settings to understand the impact of the protocol attributes (superframe order, beacon order and backoff exponent) on the network performance, namely in terms of throughput (S), average delay (D) and probability of success (Ps). We introduce the concept of utility (U) as a combination of two or more metrics, to determine the best offered load range for an optimal behavior of the network. We show that the optimal network performance using slotted CSMA/CA occurs in the range of 35% to 60% with respect to an utility function proportional to the network throughput (S) divided by the average delay (D).
