Polyamide (PA)1010 is blended with a saturated polyolefin elastomer, ethylene-cu-olefin copolymer (EOCP). To improve the compatibility of PA1010 with EOCP, different grafting rates of EOCP with maleic anhydride (MA) are used. The reaction between PA1010 and EOCP-g-MA during extrusion is verified through an extraction test. Mechanical properties, such as notched Izod impact strength, elongation at break, etc., are examined as a function of grafting rate and weight fraction of elastomer. It was found that in the scale of grafting rate (0.13-0.92 wt %), 0.51 wt % is an extreme point for several mechanical properties. Elastomer domains of PA1010/ EOCP-g-MA blends show a finer and more uniform dispersion in the matrix than that of PA1010/EOCP blends. For the same grafting rate, the average sizes of elastomer particles are almost independent on the contents of elastomer, but for different grafting rates, the particle sizes are decreased with increasing grafting rate. The copolymer formed during extrusion strengthens the interfacial adhesion and acts as an emulsifier to prevent the aggregation of elastomer in the process of blending. Magnetic microsphere comprises a magnetically responsive metal or metal oxide core surrounded by a polymer shell with active groups. Nowadays, methods of directly coating polymer, monomer polymerazation, impregnation, extrusion and biological synthesis are generally used to prepare magnetic particles. This kind of superparamagnetic microspheres can be attached to chemical, biochemical and biological substances by their active groups, then applying a magnetic field to separate from the media. Preparation and utilization of magnetic microspheres in immunoassay, nucleic acid hybrization assay, gene sequencing, cell isolation, enzyme immoblization, receptor isolation and other Gelds are reviewed with 44 references in this paper. Also, the further development is outlooked.

Blends of a liquid crystalline thermotropic copolyester (LCP70) and an amorphous phenolphthalein based poly(ether-ketone)(PEK-C) with two viscosities were prepared by melt blending. The blends' morphology, rheological and mechanical properties were investigated by DSC, SEM, mechanical and rheological tests. It was observed that the optimum composition of the PEK-C/LCP70 blend was 10 wt% LCP for both mechanical and rheological properties. When the LCP content was less than 10%, the LCP phase existed as finely dispersed fibrous domains with a diameter of about 1 mu m in the matrix, and both tensile and flexural properties were improved. In contrast, when the LCP content reached 20% or more, the LCP domains coalesced to ellipsoidal particles with a diameter of about 5 mu m, and the mechanical properties decreased as a result. It is demonstrated that pure PEK-C with a high viscosity which was difficult to process by melt extrusion, could be extruded conveniently when 10% LCP70 was incorporated. It is emphasized that LCP not only can be used as a reinforcing phase but also an effective processing agent for engineering thermoplastics, especially for those with high viscosity and narrow processing window. The rheological properties of the novel engineering thermoplastic phenophthalein poly(ether ether ketone) (PEK-C) have been investigated using both a rotational and a capillary rheometer. The dependence of the viscosity on the shear rate and temperature was obtained. The activation energy was evaluated both from the Arrhenius and the Williams-Landel-Ferry (WLF) equation. An estimate for the proper E(eta) (dependent only on the chemical structure of the polymer) has been found from the WLF equation at temperatures about T-g + 200 degrees C. Measurements of the die swell have been performed. The first normal stress differences were evaluated from the die swell results and compared with the values obtained from the rotational rheometer at low shear rates.

Noncompatibilized and compatibilized blends of nylon 1010/PP blends having five different viscosity ratios were prepared by melt extrusion. Glycidyl methacrylate-grafted-polypropylene (PP-g-GMA) was used as the compatibilizer to enbance the adhesion between the two polymers and to stabilize the blend morphology. The effect of the viscosity ratio on the morphology of nylon 1010/polypropylene blends was investigated, with primary attention to the phase-inversion behavior and the average particle size of the dispersed phase. The relationship between the mechanical properties and the phase-inversion composition was investigated as well. Investigation of the morphology of the blends by microscopy indicated that the smaller the viscosity ratio (eta(PP)/eta(PA)) the smaller was the polypropylene concentration at which the phase inversion took place and polypropylene became the continuous phase. The compatibilizer induced a sharp reduction of particle size, but did not have a major effect on the phase-inversion point. An improvement :in the mechanical properties was found when nylon 1010 provided the matrix phase. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The miscibility and crystallization behaviour of the blends of poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) with two thermoplastic polyimides (PI), PEI-E and YS-30, prepared by solution blending were studied by the use of small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), differential scanning calorimetry (d.s.c.) and polarizing microscopy techniques. The results obtained show that PEEK/YS-30 is miscible, while PEEK/PEI-E is partially miscible only in the composition range with PEI-E content up to 20 wt%. The crystallization behaviour of PEEK in PEEK/PI blends depends on the crystallization condition of the blend sample as well as the chemical structure and the content of the PI added. Our SAXS results indicate that the segregation of PI molecular chains during crystallization of PEEK chains in the blends is interfibrillar for PEEK/PEI-E blends, but interlamellar for PEEK/YS-30 blends. The compatibility and the crystallization behaviour are discussed in terms of charge transfer interaction between PI and PI molecules and between PI and PEEK molecules.

Phase behavior, thermal, theological and mechanical properties plus morphology have been studied for a binary polymer blend. The blend is phenolphthalein polyethersulfone (PES-C) with a thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer (LCP), a condensation copolymer of p-hydroxybenzoic acid with ethylene terephthalate (PHB-PET). It was found that these two polymers form optically isotropic and homogeneous blends by means of a solvent casting method. The homogeneous blends undergo phase separation during heat treatment. However, melt mixed PES-C/PHB-PET blends were heterogeneous based upon DSC and DMA analysis and SEM examination. Addition of LCP in PES-C resulted in a marked reduction of melt viscosity and thus improved processability. Compared to pure PES-C, the charpy impact strength of the blend containing 2.5% LCP increased 2.5 times. Synergistic effects were also observed for the mechanical properties of blends containing < 10% LCP. Particulates, ribbons, and fibrils were found to be the typical morphological units of PHB-PET in the PES-C matrix, which depended upon the concentration of LCP and the processing conditions.

Polycarbonate (PC) and poly(acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) (ABS) was co-extruded at different weight ratios by a single screw extruder. In order to obtain a finer blend, two times extrusion was carried out. In this case, a ''network'' structure with two-continuous phases was observed for the blends with two compositions of PC/ABS, being 80/20 and 70/30. It is found that the blends with these two compositions just have maximum values on the curves of notched Izod impact strength, flexural modulus and flexural strength vs. composition, respectively. This was never observed in previous publications.

In order to study the oriented (epitaxial) crystallization of thermoplastic polymers on oriented polymer substrates, generally the transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is used. With this instrument, the crystallized material can easily be resolved and orientation relationships can be monitored by electron diffraction. Disadvantages are the time consuming sample preparations and difficulties in the in-situ observations of the crystallization events, because of the radiation sensitivity of the polymer crystals. It is demonstrated that these disadvantages of the TEM can be eleminated by the use of different methods of light optical contrasts under specific preparation conditions of the samples and that the optical microscopy being a supplementary method to the TEM for investigations of epitaxial crystallization.

The use of interlaminar fracture tests to measure the delamination resistance of unidirectional composite laminates is now widespread. However, because of the frequent occurrence of fiber bridging and multiple cracking during the tests, it leads to artificially high values of delamination resistance, which will not represent the behavior of the laminates. Initiation fracture from the crack starter, on the other hand, does not involve bridging, and should be more representative of the delamination resistance of the composite laminates. Since there is some uncertainty involved in determining the initiation value of delamination resistance in mode I tests in the literature, a power law of the form G(IC) = A.DELTA alpha(b) (where G(IC) is mode I interlaminar fracture toughness and DELTA alpha is delamination growth) is presented in this paper to determine initiation value of mode I interlaminar fracture toughness. It is found that initiation values of the mode I interlaminar fracture toughness, G(IC)(ini), can be defined as the G(IC) value at which 1 mm of delamination from the crack starter has occurred. Examples of initiation values determined by this method are given for both carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic and thermosetting polymers.

The structure and properties of presumed block copolymers of polypropylene (PP) with ethylene-propylene random copolymers (EPR), i.e., PP-EPR and PP-EPR-PP, have been investigated by viscometry, transmission electron microscopy, dynamic mechanical analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, gel permeation chromatography, wide-angle x-ray diffraction, and other techniques testing various mechanical properties. PP-EPR and PP-EPR-PP were synthesized using delta-TiCl3-Et2AlCl as a catalyst system. The results indicate that the intrinsic viscosity of these polymers increases with each block-building step, whereas the intrinsic viscosity of those prepared by chain transfer reaction (strong chain-transfer reagent hydrogen was introduced between block-building steps during polymerization) hardly changes with the reaction time. Compared with PP / EPR blends, PP-EPR-PP block copolymers have lower PP and polyethylene crystallinity, and lower melting and crystallization temperatures of crystalline EPR. Two relaxation peaks of PP and EPR appear in the dynamic spectra of blends. They merge into a very broad relaxation peak with block sequence products of the same composition, indicating good compatibility between PP and EPR in the presence of block copolymers. Varying the PP and EPR content affects the crystallinity, density, and morphological structure of the products, which in turn affects the tensile strength and elongation at break. Because of their superior mechanical properties, sequential polymerization products containing PP-EPR and PP-EPR-PP block copolymers may have potential as compatibilizing agents for isotactic polypropylene and polyethylene blends or as potential heat-resistant thermoplastic elastomers.

Blends with a liquid-crystal polymers (LCP) as one component show, in general, very interesting properties. Reduction of shear visocity and improvement of mechanical properties are very remarkable. High melting temperatures and high costs of the LCP limit the use of these blends. A new class of thermotropic LCPs with flexible spaces, with relatively low melting temperatures, can overcome the first problem. In this work, rheological and mechanical properties of blends of polypropylene with low contents of this LCP are presented. Torque during extrusion and viscosity decrease with LCP content. Elastic modulus is remarkably increased when the LCP phase is oriented.

Turbot Scophthalmus maximus exhibits sexually dimorphic growth, with females growing faster and reaching larger adult sizes than males. Thus, development of techniques for preferentially producing females is necessary to optimize production of these species. In this paper, gynogenetic diploids of turbot were induced by activating egg development with ultraviolet (UV)-irradiated left-eyed flounder Paralichthys olivaceus sperm combined with cold shock to prevent extrusion of the second polar body. The results of UV irradiation experiments showed that survival, motility, and duration of activity of P. olivaceus sperm generally decreased with increase in UV dose. The typical Hertwig's effect was observed after fertilized turbot eggs with UV-irradiated P. olivaceus sperm and the optimal UV dose for gynogenetic haploid production was 36,000 erg mm(-2). At 15 degrees C, appropriate timing of cold shock for retention of the second polar body in turbot eggs was at 6 min after fertilization. Results of different combinations of two shock temperatures (1 or 3 degrees C) and four shock durations (15, 25, 35 or 45 min) at 6 min after fertilization demonstrated that shock of 25 min at 1 degrees C gave the highest production of diploid gynogens (39.58% relative to its diploid control). The results of this study reveal that the use of UV-irradiated P. olivaceus sperm for activation of turbot eggs and cold shock for polar body retention is an effective method to produce gynogenetic offspring.

The technique of balancing cross-sections, an important method for studying the tectonic history of sedimentary basins, has many applications. It enables one to compile charts for petroleum exploration and development, and growth sections of ancient structures can be restored so that the structural growth history can be studied. In order to study tectonic evolution in the Zhuanghai area of the Bohai-Bay basin, we selected two seismic profiles and compiled two structural growth sections. Based on the two balanced cross-sections, the evolution can be divided into four phases: the Triassic-Middle Jurassic phase, Late Jurassic - Cretaceous phase, Palaeogene extension phase, and Late Palaeogene-to-present phase. The whole area was uplifted during the Triassic-Middle Jurassic phase because of intense extrusion stress related to the Indo-China movement. During the Late Jurassic and Early Cretaceous, intense extension occurred in east China, and the whole area rifted, leading to the deposition of a thick sedimentary sequence. In the Late Cretaceous, the area suffered uplift and compression associated with the sinistral strike slip of the Tanlu fault. In the Palaeogene, a rifting basin developed in the area. Finally, it became stable and was placed in its present position by dextral strike-slip motion. In addition, some problems associated with compiling balanced cross-sections are discussed.
