For slowly accumulating sediments, a major contrast exists in the radiocarbon-age differences among coexisting shells of planktic foraminifera between those experiencing little dissolution and those experiencing significant dissolution. In the former, the ages generally agree to within a couple of hundred years. In the latter, age differences as large as 1000 years are common. The most likely explanation appears to be the Barker Effect, which involves the preferential fragmentation of dissolution-prone G. sacculifer and G. ruber. The whole shells of these species picked for radiocarbon dating have shorter residence times in the bioturbation zone than those for dissolution-resistant species (including benthics). As low accumulation rate sediment cores often fail to yield reliable radiocarbon-based ocean ventilation ages, where possible, such studies should be conducted on high accumulation rate cores.

DATED-1 comprises a compilation of dates related to the build-up and retreat of the Eurasian (British-Irish, Scandinavian, Svalbard-Barents-Kara Seas) Ice Sheets, and time-slice maps of the Eurasian Ice sheet margins. Dates are sourced from the published literature. Ice margins are based on published geological and chronological data and include uncertainty bounds (maximum, minimum) as well as what we consider to be the most-credible (mc) based on the available evidence. Most current methods of reconstructing past sea levels within Antarctica rely on radiocarbon dating. However, radiocarbon dating is limited by the availability of material for dating and problems inherent with radiocarbon reservoirs in Antarctic marine systems. Here we report on the success of a new approach to dating raised beach deposits in Antarctica for the purpose of reconstructing past sea levels. This new approach is the use of optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) on quartz-grains obtained from the underside of cobbles within raised beaches and boulder pavements. We obtained eight OSL dates from three sites along the shores of Maxwell Bay in the South Shetland Islands of the Antarctic Peninsula. These dates are internally consistent and fit well with previously published radiocarbon ages obtained from the same deposits. In addition, when the technique was applied to a modern beach, it resulted in an age of zero. Our results suggest that this method will provide a valuable tool in the reconstruction of past sea levels in Antarctica and other coarse-grained beach deposits across the globe.

Shell chemistry of planktic foraminifera and the alkenone unsaturation index in 69 surface sediment samples in the tropical eastern Indian Ocean off West and South Indonesia were studied. Results were compared to modern hydrographic data in order to assess how modern environmental conditions are preserved in sedimentary record, and to determine the best possible proxies to reconstruct seasonality, thermal gradient and upper water column characteristics in this part of the world ocean. Our results imply that alkenone-derived temperatures record annual mean temperatures in the study area. However, this finding might be an artifact due to the temperature limitation of this proxy above 28°C. Combined study of shell stable oxygen isotope and Mg/Ca ratio of planktic foraminifera suggests that Globigerinoides ruber sensu stricto (s.s.), G. ruber sensu lato (s.l.), and G. sacculifer calcify within the mixed-layer between 20 m and 50 m, whereas Globigerina bulloides records mixed-layer conditions at ~50 m depth during boreal summer. Mean calcifications of Pulleniatina obliquiloculata, Neogloboquadrina dutertrei, and Globorotalia tumida occur at the top of the thermocline during boreal summer, at ~75 m, 75-100 m, and 100 m, respectively. Shell Mg/Ca ratios of all species show a significant correlation with temperature at their apparent calcification depths and validate the application of previously published temperature calibrations, except for G. tumida that requires a regional Mg/Ca-temperature calibration (Mg/Ca = 0.41 exp (0.068*T)). We show that the difference in Mg/Ca-temperatures of the mixed-layer species and the thermocline species, particularly between G. ruber s.s. (or s.l.) and P. obliquiloculata, can be applied to track changes in the upper water column stratification. Our results provide critical tools for reconstructing past changes in the hydrography of the study area and their relation to monsoon, El Niño-Southern Oscillation, and the Indian Ocean Dipole Mode.

The response of the tropical climate in the Indian Ocean realm to abrupt climate change events in the North Atlantic Ocean is contentious. Repositioning of the intertropical convergence zone is thought to have been responsible for changes in tropical hydroclimate during North Atlantic cold spells1, 2, 3, 4, 5, but the dearth of high-resolution records outside the monsoon realm in the Indian Ocean precludes a full understanding of this remote relationship and its underlying mechanisms. Here we show that slowdowns of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation during Heinrich stadials and the Younger Dryas stadial affected the tropical Indian Ocean hydroclimate through changes to the Hadley circulation including a southward shift in the rising branch (the intertropical convergence zone) and an overall weakening over the southern Indian Ocean. Our results are based on new, high-resolution sea surface temperature and seawater oxygen isotope records of well-dated sedimentary archives from the tropical eastern Indian Ocean for the past 45,000 years, combined with climate model simulations of Atlantic circulation slowdown under Marine Isotope Stages 2 and 3 boundary conditions. Similar conditions in the east and west of the basin rule out a zonal dipole structure as the dominant forcing of the tropical Indian Ocean hydroclimate of millennial-scale events. Results from our simulations and proxy data suggest dry conditions in the northern Indian Ocean realm and wet and warm conditions in the southern realm during North Atlantic cold spells.

Barents cod spawn in the Motovsky Bay during the periods of warming in the Arctic when proportion of mature fish in the population is high enough. Cod spawning is most likely to occur in the Motovsky Bay when large cod forage in southeastern waters, and prespawning fish migrate close by the Murmansk coast. Under such conditions cod spawn in the Motovsky Bay, but low water temperature and slow egg drift toward Murmansk coastal waters delay development of cod eggs. As a result the eggs remain at the first stage for a long time; this causes high egg mortality before hatching. Larvae that survive and become pelagic and then bottom juveniles nevertheless have little chance to survive in winter because they are not biologically ready for overwintering. Thus, delay in egg development at the first stage delays subsequent stages of fish ontogeny, and strongly impairs survival of cod juveniles from the Motovsky Bay.

Gneissic granodiorite was recovered by drilling at the base of the Mazagan escarpment, 100 km west of the Casablanca, Morocco, at 4000 m water depth. Coarse, predeformative muscovite yielded dates of -515 Ma, fine-grained muscovite of -455 Ma, biotite -360 and 335 Ma, and feldspar -315 Ma. These dates are tentatively correlated with the microscopic results. We assume a minimum age of middle Cambrian for the granodiorite, an Ordovician deformation and mylonitization, and a Late Carboniferous overprint under upper greenschist facies conditions.
