In this paper we discuss the different models proposed to explain the visible luminescence in porous silicon (PS). We review our recent photoluminescence and Raman studies on PS as a function of different preparation conditions and isochronal thermal annealing. Our results can be explained by a hybrid model which incorporates both nanostructures for quantum confinement and silicon complexes (such as SiHx, and siloxene) and defects at Si/SiO2, interfaces as luminescent centres.

A simple, cost-effective and environment-friendly pathway for preparing highly porous matrix of giant dielectric material CaCu3Ti4O12 (CCTO) through combustion of a completely aqueous precursor solution is presented. The pathway yields phase-pure and impurity-less CCTO ceramic at an ultra-low temperature (700 degrees C) and is better than traditional solid-state reaction schemes which fail to produce pure phase at as high temperature as 1000 degrees C (Li, Schwartz, Phys. Rev. B 75, 012104). The porous ceramic matrix on grinding produced CCTO powder having particle size in submicron order with an average size 300 nm. On sintering at 1050 degrees C for 5 h the powder shows high dielectric constants (>10(4) at all frequencies from 100 Hz to 100 kHz) and low loss (with 0.05 as the lowest value) which is suitable for device applications. The reaction pathway is expected to be extended to prepare other multifunctional complex perovskite materials. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We have prepared stable colloidal suspensions in a lyotropic liquid crystal exhibiting an isotropic-nematic-lamellar phase sequence. Small angle neutron scattering (SANS) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) studies show the existence of attractive interparticle interactions in the nematic phase, which lead to a gas-liquid transition of the particles. The resulting liquid phase is weakly anisotropic. Further, the nematic-lamellar transition of the liquid crystal is found to be accompanied by a liquid-solid transition of the particles.

Employing aqueous tert-butyl hydroperoxide (70%) as an inexpensive reagent a useful methodology for the regioselective and chemoselective deprotection of terminal acetonide groups in aqueous medium is developed. A variety of acetonide derivatives on reaction with aqueous tert-butyl hydroperoxide in water:tert-butanol (1:1) furnish the corresponding acetonide deprotected diols in good yields. A large number of acid labile protecting functional groups and other functional moieties were found to be unaffected under the conditions employed for the present deprotection. This method has been successfully applied to sugar derivatives.

Variable cross-sectional area ducts are often used for attenuation at lower frequencies (of the order of firing frequency), whereas concentric tube resonators provide attenuation at relatively higher frequencies. In this paper, analysis of one dimensional control volume approach of conical concentric tube resonators is validated experimentally. The effects of mean flow and taper are investigated. The experimental setup is specially designed to measure the pressure transfer function in the form of Level Difference or Noise Reduction across the test muffler. It is shown that there is a reasonably good agreement between the predicted values of the Noise Reduction and the measured ones for incompressible mean flow as well as stationary medium. In this paper, a plane stress solution for the interaction analysis of strip footing resting on (i) a non-homogeneous elastic half-plane and (ii) a non-homogeneous elastic layer resting on a rigid stratum has been presented. The analysis has been done using a combined analytical and FEM method in which the discretization of the half-plane is not required and thereby minimizes the computational efforts considerably. The contact pressure distribution and the settlement profile for the selected cases of varying modulus half-plane, which has more relevance to foundation engineering, have been given. Experimental verification through a photoelastic method of stress analysis has been carried out for the case of footing on Gibson elastic half-plane, and the contact pressure distribution thus obtained has been compared with the theoretical results. Utilising Jones' method associated with the Wiener-Hopf technique, explicit solutions are obtained for the temperature distributions on the surface of a cylindrical rod without an insulated core as well as that inside a cylindrical rod with an insulated inner core when the rod, in either of the two cases, is allowed to enter, with a uniform speed, into two different layers of fluid with different cooling abilities. Simple expressions are derived for the values of the sputtering temperatures of the rod at the points of entry into the respective layers, assuming the upper layer of the fluid to be of finite depth and the lower of infinite extent. Both the problems are solved through a three-part Wiener-Hopf problem of special type and the numerical results under certain special circumstances are obtained and presented in tabular forms.

The effect of surface mass transfer on buoyancy induced flow in a variable porosity medium adjacent to a heated vertical plate is studied for high Rayleigh numbers. Similarity solutions are obtained within the frame work of boundary layer theory for a power law variation in surface temperature,T Wpropx lambda and surface injectionv Wpropx(lambda–1/2). The analysis incorporates the expression connecting porosity and permeability and also the expression connecting porosity and effective thermal diffusivity. The influence of thermal dispersion on the flow and heat transfer characteristics are also analysed in detail. The results of the present analysis document the fact that variable porosity enhances heat transfer rate and the magnitude of velocity near the wall. The governing equations are solved using an implicit finite difference scheme for both the Darcy flow model and Forchheimer flow model, the latter analysis being confined to an isothermal surface and an impermeable vertical plate. The influence of the intertial terms in the Forchheimer model is to decrease the heat transfer and flow rates and the influence of thermal dispersion is to increase the heat transfer rate.

The influence of pH on the corrosion behaviour of two aluminium-lithium-copper-magnesium-zirconium (8090 and 2091) alloys was studied and compared with a standard aircraft alloy, 2014 (Al-4.4% Cu) and 99.9% pure Al. In constant exposure and potentiodynamic polarization studies conducted in 3.5% NaCl solution having different pH values, all the alloys exhibited high corrosion rates in acidic and alkaline environments, with a minimum in less hostile environments close to neutral pH. The pitting potentials for aluminium-lithium alloys were slightly lower than those for 2014 and pure Al. The effect of pH on the passive current density was also less for aluminium-lithium alloys.

In this paper, the critical budding temperature of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), which are embedded in one-parameter elastic medium (Winkler foundation) is estimated under the umbrella of continuum mechanics theory. Nonlocal continuum theory is incorporated into Timoshenko beam model and the governing differential equations of motion are derived. An explicit expression for the non-dimensional critical buckling temperature is also derived in this work. The effect of the nonlocal small scale coefficient, the Winkler foundation parameter and the ratio of the length to the diameter on the critical buckling temperature is investigated in detail. It can be observed that the effects of nonlocal small scale parameter and the Winkler foundation parameter are significant and should be considered for thermal analysis of SWCNTs. The results presented in this paper can provide useful guidance for the study and design of the next generation of nanodevices that make use of the thermal buckling properties of embedded single-walled carbon nanotubes. A nonsimilar boundary layer analysis is presented for the problem of mixed convection in power-law type non-Newtonian fluids along horizontal surfaces with variable heat flux distribution. The mixed convection regime is divided into two regions, namely, the forced convection dominated regime and the free convection dominated regime. The two solutions are matched. Numerical results are presented for the details of the velocity and temperature fields. A discussion is provided for the effect of viscosity index on the surface heat transfer rate.

Porous, large surface area, metastable zirconias, are of importance to catalytic, electrochemical, biological, and thermal insulation applications. Combustion synthesis is a very commonly used method for producing such zirconias. However, its rapid nature makes control difficult. A simple modification has been made to traditional solution combustion synthesis to address this problem. It involves the addition of starch to yield a starting mixture with a ``dough-like'' consistency. Just 5 wt% starch is seen to significantly alter the combustion characteristics of the ``dough.'' In particular, it helps to achieve better control over reaction zone temperature that is significantly lower than the one calculated by the adiabatic approximation typically used in self-propagating high-temperature synthesis. The effect of such control is demonstrated by the ability to tune dough composition to yield zirconias with different phase compositions from the relatively elusive ``amorphous'' to monoclinic (> 30 nm grain size) and tetragonal pure zirconia (< 30 nm grain size). The nature of this amorphous phase has been investigated using infrared spectroscopy. Starch content also helps tailor porosity in the final product. Zirconias with an average pore size of about 50 mu m and specific surface area as large as 110 m2/g have been obtained.
