We have spectroscopically determined breath ammonia levels in seven patients with end-stage renal disease while they were undergoing hemodialysis at the University of California, Los Angeles, dialysis center. We correlated these measurements against simultaneously taken blood samples that were analyzed for blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and creatinine, which are the accepted standards indicating the level of nitrogenous waste loading in a patient's bloodstream. Initial levels of breath ammonia, i.e., at the beginning of dialysis, are between 1,500 ppb and 2,000 ppb (parts per billion). These levels drop very sharply in the first 15–30 min as the dialysis proceeds. We found the reduction in breath ammonia concentration to be relatively slow from this point on to the end of dialysis treatment, at which point the levels tapered off at 150 to 200 ppb. For each breath ammonia measurement, taken at 15–30 min intervals during the dialysis, we also sampled the patient's blood for BUN and creatinine. The breath ammonia data were available in real time, whereas the BUN and creatinine data were available generally 24 h later from the laboratory. We found a good correlation between breath ammonia concentration and BUN and creatinine. For one of the patients, the correlation gave an R2 of 0.95 for breath ammonia and BUN correlation and an R2 of 0.83 for breath ammonia and creatinine correlation. These preliminary data indicate the possibility of using the real-time breath ammonia measurements for determining efficacy and endpoint of hemodialysis.

Clay minerals are layer type aluminosilicates that figure in terrestrial biogeochemical cycles, in the buffering capacity of the oceans, and in the containment of toxic waste materials. They are also used as lubricants in petroleum extraction and as industrial catalysts for the synthesis of many organic compounds. These applications derive fundamentally from the colloidal size and permanent structural charge of clay mineral particles, which endow them with significant surface reactivity. Unraveling the surface geochemistry of hydrated clay minerals is an abiding, if difficult, topic in earth sciences research. Recent experimental and computational studies that take advantage of new methodologies and basic insights derived from the study of concentrated ionic solutions have begun to clarify the structure of electrical double layers formed on hydrated clay mineral surfaces, particularly those in the interlayer region of swelling 2:1 layer type clay minerals. One emerging trend is that the coordination of interlayer cations with water molecules and clay mineral surface oxygens is governed largely by cation size and charge, similarly to a concentrated ionic solution, but the location of structural charge within a clay layer and the existence of hydrophobic patches on its surface provide important modulations. The larger the interlayer cation, the greater the influence of clay mineral structure and hydrophobicity on the configurations of adsorbed water molecules. This picture extends readily to hydrophobic molecules adsorbed within an interlayer region, with important implications for clay–hydrocarbon interactions and the design of catalysts for organic synthesis.

The Marshall Islands, a small island developing nation, has a significant solid waste problem. The atoll environment of the Majuro, the capital of the Marshall Islands, is one of scarce land and overpopulation. Increasing Western influences has been a major factor in this solid waste problem. This problem has created health issues and is an impediment to the development of a tourism industry, which is essential to the development of economic opportunities. Responsibility for solid waste management in Majuro is divided between several governmental and non-governmental agencies. This system is dysfunctional as there is little or no cooperation between the agencies. Although many consultants have developed recommendations, no action has been taken. Developing an action plan to consolidate solid waste management under one authority is important to solving of this solid waste problem. This project proposes legislation creating a solid waste management authority that will have the power to regulate all aspects of solid waste and help implement education and awareness to the people of the Marshall Islands.

Water quantity and quality issues worldwide are causing nations to consider alternate sources for drinking water. Desalination and other membrane processes for treatment of seawater and brackish inland waters have been in use for the past quarter century and are growing in use worldwide. These treatment processes create a highly concentrated waste stream in which the principal constituents are dissolved solids. This report provides an overview of desalination methods and the methods available to dispose of this waste stream. Innovative technologies being studied for possible future use are also discussed.

This is a small, paper-bound "waste book" containing minutes taken by the Secretary pro tempore, Samuel Cooke, at meetings held on the following dates: July 31, 1775; August 8, 1775; August 22, 1775; September 5, 1775; October 3, 1775; October 23, 1775 (fragmentary); November 5, 1775; April 16, 1776; and April 23, 1776. Because these meetings took place during the American Revolutionary War, they were held in the "Council chamber at Watertown."
