In the present experimental study we assessed induced osteoarthritis data in rabbits, compared three diagnostic methods, i.e., radiography (XR), computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and correlated the imaging findings with those obtained by macroscopic evaluation. Ten young female rabbits of the Norfolk breed were used. Seven rabbits had the right knee immobilized in extension for a period of 12 weeks (immobilized group), and three others did not have a limb immobilized and were maintained under the same conditions (control group). Alterations observed by XR, CT and MRI after the period of immobilization were osteophytes, osteochondral lesions, increase and decrease of joint space, all of them present both in the immobilized and non-immobilized contralateral limbs. However, a significantly higher score was obtained for the immobilized limbs (XT: P = 0.016, CT: P = 0.031, MRI: P = 0.0156). All imaging methods were able to detect osteoarthritis changes after the 12 weeks of immobilization. Macroscopic evaluation identified increased thickening of joint capsule, proliferative and connective tissue in the femoropatellar joint, and irregularities of articular cartilage, especially in immobilized knees. The differences among XR, CT and MRI were not statistically significant for the immobilized knees. However, MRI using a 0.5 Tesla scanner was statistically different from CT and XR for the non-immobilized contralateral knees. We conclude that the three methods detected osteoarthritis lesions in rabbit knees, but MRI was less sensitive than XR and CT in detecting lesions compatible with initial osteoarthritis. Since none of the techniques revealed all the lesions, it is important to use all methods to establish an accurate diagnosis.

This paper presents numerical simulations of incompressible fluid flows in the presence of a magnetic field at low magnetic Reynolds number. The equations governing the flow are the Navier-Stokes equations of fluid motion coupled with Maxwell's equations of electromagnetics. The study of fluid flows under the influence of a magnetic field and with no free electric charges or electric fields is known as magnetohydrodynamics. The magnetohydrodynamics approximation is considered for the formulation of the non-dimensional problem and for the characterization of similarity parameters. A finite-difference technique is used to discretize the equations. In particular, an extension of the generalized Peaceman and Rachford alternating-direction implicit (ADI) scheme for simulating two-dimensional fluid flows is presented. The discretized conservation equations are solved in stream function-vorticity formulation. We compare the ADI and generalized ADI schemes, and show that the latter is more efficient in simulating low Reynolds number and magnetic Reynolds number problems. Numerical results demonstrating the applicability of this technique are also presented. The simulation of incompressible magneto hydrodynamic fluid flows is illustrated by numerical solution for two-dimensional cases. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The use of AC/DC magnetic susceptibility and impedance measurements to detect oxygen depletion effects in La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 +/-delta and NiMn2O4+delta spinel-type compounds is reported. For the NiMn2O4, for which no Mn4+ was found, three superposed Debye relaxations were observed in the range 260-180 K. Otherwise, in La0.7Ca0.3MnO3, the argon annealed has contributed to a decrease in T-C, but the amount of Mn4+ is still too high to allow the observation of a relaxation in this frequency window. We report the effects of oxygen stoichiometry in the structure and magnetic response of spinel-type NiMn2O4-delta polycrystalline samples controlled by heat-treatments in different atmospheric conditions. The post-annealed samples were analyzed by Scanning Electron Microscopy associated to X-ray Energy Dispersion Spectrometry, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy and AC/DC magnetic measurements. Results indicate that the oxygen stoichiometry highly influences the magnetic interactions between the ferromagnetic, and antiferromagnetic sublattices in these compounds due to the presence of manganese in three possible valence states. In this work we report the synthesis procedure, crystallographic, structural and magnetic properties of the Li2ZnTi3O8 spinel obtained using a modified polymeric precursor method. This synthesis method generates very reactive and property-controlled nanoparticles. The samples were characterized using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) associated to the Rietveld refinement method, thermogravimetric analysis (TG), specific surface area, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The phase formation temperature of the lithium zinc titanate spinel was observed to decrease due to the homogeneity and highly controlled nanometric particle size. Yttrium-aluminum oxides are interesting compounds and they have been extensively used as host for lasers and phosphors, due to their stable physical and chemical properties. The fabrication of yttrium-aluminum garnet (YAG) has been investigated thoroughly. Single-crystal YAG is expensive and to produce it a new way has been investigated. This process consists of modifying the methodology of reagents mixture and the process of heating them. The microwave irradiation is used to heat-treat the oxide mixture. The traditional synthesis of YAG powders occurs through the reaction of aluminum and yttrium powders at high temperatures. With this work we investigated the preparation of YAG by non-hydrolytic sol-gel route as an alternative methodology to obtain yttrium-aluminum matrix from inorganic precursors (yttrium and aluminum chloride). The preparation of the gel was carried out in an oven-dried glassware. The AlCl3, YCl3 and ethanol were reacted in reflux under argon atmosphere. Europium III chloride was added as a structural probe. The powder was dried and heat-treated in modified microwaves. The samples were pre-treated at 50 and 800 C during I h and then heated in microwaves for 30 s, 2 and 4 min. The formation process and structure of the powders were studied by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), photoluminescence (PL) and transmission electronic microscopy (TEM). XRD presents only picks corresponding to the YAG phase and confirmed by TEM. PL date showed that the YAG phase was formed in 2 min with the samples pre-treated at 50 C. For the samples pretreated at 800 degrees C, the YAG phase appears in 30s. The excitation spectra present a maximum of 394 nm corresponding to the L-5(6) level and emission spectra of Eu III ion present bands characteristic transitions arising from the D-5(0) -> F-7(J) (J= 1, 2, 3, 4) monifolds excited at their maximum. The magnetic dipole D-5(0) -> F-7(1) transition presents more intensity than the electric dipole D-5(0) -> F-7(2) transition. This methodology showed efficiency in obtaining YAG phase. The non-ohmic properties of the 98.90% SnO2+(1-x)%CoO+0.05% Cr2O3+0.05% Nb2O5+x% MnO2 varistor system (all of them in mol %), as well as the influence of the oxidizing and reducing atmosphere on this system were studied in this work. Experimental evidence indicates that the electrical properties of the varistor depend on the defects that occur at the grain boundary and on the adsorbed oxygen species such as O''(2), O'(2), O in this region. Thermal treatments at 900 degreesC in oxygen and nitrogen atmospheres indicated such a dependence with the values of the non-linearity coefficient (alpha) increasing under oxygen atmosphere, being reduced in nitrogen atmosphere and restored after a new treatment in oxygen atmosphere, presenting a reversibility in the process. EDS analysis accomplished by SEM showed the distribution of the oxides in the varistor matrix. (C) 2002 Kluwer Academic Publishers.

The tin dioxide is an n-type semiconductor, which exhibits varistor behavior with high capacity of absorption of energy, whose function is to restrict transitory over-voltages without being destroyed, when it is doped with some oxides. Varistors are used in alternated current fields as well as in continuous current, and it can be applied in great interval of voltages or in great interval of currents. The electric properties of the varistor depend on the defects that happen at the grain boundaries and the adsorption of oxygen. The (98.90-x)%SnO2.0.25%CoO+0.75%MnO2+0.05%Ta2O5+0.05%Tr2O3 systems, in which Tr=La or Nd. Current-voltage measurements were accomplished for determination of the non-linear coefficient were studied. SEM microstructure analysis was made to evaluate the microstructural characteristics of the systems. The results showed that the rare-earth oxides have influenced the electrical behavior presented by the system. (C) 2002 Kluwer Academic Publishers.

Temperature and frequency dependence of the F-19 nuclear spin relaxation of the fluoroindate glass, 40InF(3)-20ZnF(2)- 20SrF(2)-2GaF(3)-2NaF-16BaF(2) and the fluorozirconate glass, 50ZrF(4)-20BaF(2)-21LiF-5LaF(3)-4AlF(3); are reported. Measurements were undertaken on pure and Gd3+ doped samples, in the temperature range of 185-1000 K, covering the region below and above the glass transition temperature, T-g. The temperature and frequency dependence of the spin-lattice relaxation rate, T-1(-1), measured in the glassy state at temperature <300 K, is less than the observed dependence at higher temperatures. At temperatures >T-g, the fluorine mobility increases, leading to a more efficient spins lattice relaxation process. Activation energies, for F- motion, are 0.8 eV for the fluoroindate glass and 1 eV for the fluorozirconate glass. The addition of Gd3+ paramagnetic impurities;at 0.1-wt%, does not alter the temperature and frequency dependence of T-1(-1), but increases its magnitude more than one order of magnitude. At temperatures <400 K, the spin-spin relaxation time, T-2(-1), measured for all samples, is determined by the rigid-lattice nuclear dipole-dipole coupling, and it is temperature independent within the accuracy of the measurements. Results obtained for the pure glass, at temperatures >400 K, show that T-2(-1) decreases monotonically as the temperature increases. This decrease is explained as a consequence of the motional narrowing effect caused by the onset of the diffusive motion of the F- ions, with an activation energy around 0.8 eV. For the doped samples, the hyperfine interaction with the paramagnetic impurities is most effective in the relaxation of the nuclear spin, causing an increase in the T(2)(-1)s observed at temperatures >600 K. In this article we present a concise report on our studies on the magnetic behavior and structural arrangements of the inverse spinel Zn7-xMxSb2O12 system (M = Ni, Co). Studies on the temperature dependence of the magnetization (M) of several samples in this system showed the occurrence of a spin-glass-like state in temperatures around 10 K. The capability of this system to hold magnetic ions in either octahedral and/or tetrahedral positions is responsible for the occurrence of competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions. This condition is likely to cause the appearance of the observed spin-glass-like behavior. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we report luminescent and morphological studies with yttrium oxide samples doped with ytterbium and erbium. The samples were prepared by the combustion method and also from different precursors: oxalate, basic carbonate and polymeric resin. All powders were identified Lis being an yttrium oxide with a C-form structure, independent of the employed precursor. From mean crystallite size measurements, it was verified that oxides prepared through the polymeric precursor and combustion methods lead to the smallest crystallite size. Particle shape and size were investigated by SEM and TEM, and showed that both the oxalate precursor and the combustion methods do not provide oxide materials of suitable shape or size, on the other hand. The basic carbonate and polymeric precursors resulted in spherically shaped particles with an average diameter of 90 and 15 run. respectively, Upon 980 run diode laser excitation, green and red emission lines were detected for all samples and were assigned to the H-2(11/2) S-4(3/2) -> I-4(15/2) and (4)Fg(9/2) -> 4I(15/12) transitions, respectively. Such transitions are characteristic for Er3+ and result from energy transfer from Yb3+ energy levels, F-2(7/2) -> F-2(5/2). A relationship between the decrease in the mean crystallite size and the enhancement in red emission was also established as well as the influence of the presence of a high percentage of Yb-3 Both factors promote ET from Yb3+ (F-2(5/2)) to Er3+ (I-4(11/2)).
