ABSTRACT Studies of carbon allocation in forests provide essential information for understanding spatial and temporal differences in carbon cycling that can inform models and predict possible responses to changes in climate. Amazon forests play a particularly significant role in the global carbon balance, but there are still large uncertainties regarding abiotic controls on the rates of net primary production (NPP) and the allocation of photosynthetic products to different ecosystem components; and how the carbon allocation components of Amazon forests respond to extreme climate events. The overall objective of this thesis is to examine the carbon allocation components in old-growth tropical forests on contrasting soils, and under similar climatic conditions in two sites at the Amacayacu National Natural Park and the Zafire Biological Station, located in the north-western Amazon (Colombia). Measurements of above- and below-ground carbon allocation components (biomass, net primary production, and its partitioning) at the ecosystem level, and dynamics of tree mortality and recruitment were done along eight years (20042012) in six 1-ha plots established in five Amazon forest types on different soils (clay, clay-loam, sandy-clay-loam, sandy-loam and loamy-sand) to address specific questions detailed in the next paragraphs. In Chapter 2, I evaluated the hypothesis that as soil fertility increases the amount of carbon allocated to below-ground production (fine-roots) should decrease. To address this hypothesis the standing crop mass and production of fine-roots (<2 mm) were estimated by two methods: (1) ingrowth cores and, (2) sequential soil coring, during 2.2 years in the most contrasting forests: the clay-soil forest and the loamy-sand forest. We found that the standing crop fine-root mass and its production were significantly different between forests and also between soil depths (0–10 and 10–20 cm). The loamysand forest allocated more carbon to fine-roots than the clay-soil forest, with fine-root production in the loamy-sand forest twice (mean ± standard error = 2.98 ± 0.36 and 3.33 ± 0.69 Mg C ha −1 yr −1, method 1 and 2, respectively) as much as for the more fertile claysoil forest (1.51 ± 0.14, method 1, and from 1.03 ± 0.31 to 1.36 ± 0.23 Mg C ha −1 yr −1, method 2). Similarly, the average of standing crop fine-root mass was three times higher in the loamy-sand forest (5.47 ± 0.17 Mg C ha1) than in the more fertile soil (from 1.52 ± 0.08 a 1.82 ± 0.09 Mg C ha1). The standing crop fine-root mass also showed a temporal pattern related to rainfall, with the production of fine-roots decreasing substantially in the dry period of the year 2005. These results suggest that soil resources may play an important role in patterns of carbon allocation of below-ground components, not only driven the differences in the biomass and its production, but also in the time when it is produced. In Chapter 3, I assessed the three components of stand-level carbon allocation (biomass, NPP, and its partitioning) for the same forests evaluated in Chapter 2 (clay-soil forest and loamy-sand forest). We found differences in carbon allocation patterns between these two forests, showing that the forest on clay-soil had a higher aboveground and total biomass as well as a higher above-ground NPP than the loamy-sand forest. However, differences between the two types of forests in terms of stand-level NPP were smaller, as a consequence of different strategies in the carbon allocation of above- and below-ground components. The proportional allocation of NPP to new foliage production was relatively similar between the two forests. Our results of aboveground biomass increments and fine-root production suggest a possible trade-off between carbon allocation to fine-roots versus wood growth (as it has been reported by other authors), as opposed to the most commonly assumed trade-off between total above- and below-ground production. Despite these differences among forests in terms of carbon allocation components, the leaf area index showed differences between forests like total NPP, suggesting that the leaf area index is more indicative of total NPP than carbon allocation. In Chapter 4, I evaluated the spatial and temporal variation of carbon allocation components and forest dynamics of Amazon forests as well as their responses to climatic fluctuations. I evaluated the intra- and inter-annual variation of carbon allocation components and forest dynamics during the period 2004−2012 in five forests on different soils (clay, clay-loam, sandy-clay-loam, sandy-loam and loamy-sand), but growing under the same local precipitation regime in north-western Amazonia (Colombia). We were interested in examining if these forests respond similarly to rainfall fluctuations as many models predict, considering the following questions: (i) Is there a correlation in carbon allocation components and forest dynamics with precipitation? (ii) Is there a correlation among forests? (iii) Are temporal responses in leaf area index (LAI) indicative of variations of above-ground production or a reflection of changes in carbon allocation patterns among forests?. Overall, the correlation of above- and below-ground carbon allocation components with rainfall suggests that soils play an important role in the spatial and temporal differences of responses of these forests to rainfall fluctuations. On the one hand, most forests showed that the above-ground components are susceptible to rainfall fluctuations; however, there was a forest on loamy-sand that only showed a correlation with the below-ground component (fine-roots). On the other hand, despite the fact that north-western Amazonia is considered without a conspicuous dry season (defined as <100 mm month−1), litterfall and fine-root mass showed high seasonality and variability, particularly marked during the drought of 2005. Additionally, forests of the loam-soil group showed that litterfall respond to time-lags in rainfall as well as and the fine-root mass of the loamy-sand forest. With regard to forest dynamics, only the mortality rate of the loamy-sand forest was significantly correlated with rainfall (77%). The observed inter-annual variability of stem and biomass increments of individuals highlighted the importance of the mortality in the above-ground biomass increment. However, mortality rates and death type proportion did not show clear trends related to droughts. Interestingly, litterfall, above-ground biomass increment and recruitment rates of forests showed high correlation among forests, particularly within the loam-soil forests group. Nonetheless, LAI measured in the most contrasting forests (clay-soil and loamysand) was poorly correlated with rainfall but highly correlated between forests; LAI did not reflect the differences in the carbon allocation components, and their response to rainfall on these forests. Finally, the forests studied highlight that north-western Amazon forests are also susceptible to climate fluctuations, contrary to what has been proposed previously due to their lack of a pronounced dry season.

ABSTRACT The hygroscopic response of wood varies throughout the radial direction of the tree. The longer cut of young trees and the use of small-diameter trunks in the forest product industry make it necessary to study the hygroscopic behaviour of both juvenile and mature wood. Determining this behaviour in both types of wood provides information for understanding the sorption mechanisms. Similarly, obtaining the thermodynamic properties of juvenile and mature wood facilitates modelling of industrial processes such as drying and bonding. In this study a comparison was made of the hygroscopic behaviour and thermodynamic properties of juvenile and mature wood of Abies pinsapo Boissier, Abies alba Mill., Pinus canariensis C. Sm. ex DC., Pinus nigra Arnold, Pinus uncinata Mill. ex Mirb. and Pinus pinea L. This was done by obtaining the sorption isotherms using the traditional saturated salt method described by COST Action E8 at 15, 35 and 50ºC in Abies pinsapo, Abies alba, Pinus nigra, Pinus uncinata and Pinus pinea, and at 35 and 50ºC in Pinus canariensis. In addition, dynamic vapour sorption (DVS) was used to obtain the isotherms of Pinus pinea at 35 and 50ºC. The curves were fitted using the Guggenheim, Anderson and de Boer- Dent (GAB) model and all samples met the established acceptance criteria. In the study of the isotherms, the hysteresis coefficient and area of the hysteresis loop between adsorption and desorption were calculated for each sample. To understand the hygroscopic behaviour of juvenile and mature wood, the chemical composition, infrared spectra (FTIR) and X-ray diffractograms of each type of wood were determined. The thermodynamic parameters - net isosteric heat and total heat of wetting - were obtained from the sorption isotherms by applying the integration method of the Clausius-Clapeyron equation. The data obtained using the traditional saturated salt method and with dynamic vapour sorption were compared to determine the similarities between the two methods. The results showed that the equilibrium points are greater in the mature wood than in the juvenile wood in most cases, and therefore the mature wood isotherms are always above the juvenile wood isotherms, mainly because of the chemical composition. As regards the thermodynamic properties, it was determined that the energy involved in the sorption processes is greater in the mature wood than in the juvenile wood, and is greater in the desorption process than in the adsorption process. On comparing the saturated salt and dynamic vapour sorption methods, almost no significant differences were detected in the adsorption process, but significant differences were obtained in the desorption process.

ABSTRACT Water availability is one of the major factors that determine vineyard performance in many grape growing regions, so its implications have been widely studied before. However, for a given irrigation water amount, other aspects such as application frequency, or emitter spacing and flow rate (i.e., distribution pattern), may play a relevant role, but these factors have been scarcely studied. The aim of this work was to evaluate the agronomic and physiological implications of two irrigation frequencies (IrrF, every 2 and 4 days) and two water distribution patterns (DisP, 2 L h−1 emitters every 0.6 m vs. 4 L h−1 emitters every 1.2 m). The experiment was carried out during four consecutive seasons in a cv. Syrah vineyard with a clay soil in central Spain, and the two factors were evaluated under two water availability conditions (LOW WA: 20% of ETo and MEDIUM WA: 40% of ETo). The effect of irrigation frequency and water distribution pattern on the agronomical response of cv. Syrah was studied in Chapter 1. IrrF and DisP affected some aspects of vegetative development and yield components under both water availability conditions, although the effects observed were not the same every year. The effects were more evident for IrrF under low water availability and for DisP under medium water availability. Two out of the four years of the experiment, the change of irrigation frequency from 2 days to 4 days promoted an average yield increase of 20% for the LOW WA situation. Soil texture certainly conditioned the results obtained under LOW WA conditions, since high frequency irrigation implied applying small amounts of water that resulted in limited superficial water bulbs, which probably favored water evaporation. In Chapter 2, the effect of irrigation frequency and water distribution pattern on plant water status and leaf gas exchange was analyzed to explain the differences observed in the agronomical response. Concerning irrigation frequency, under LOW WA conditions, applying irrigation every 4 days, resulted in higher net assimilation rates and stomatal conductance than doing it every 2 days, supporting the hypothesis that the latter frequency resulted in a water use efficiency loss, probably due to higher evaporation as a consequence of the fact the wetted soil volume created was small and close to the surface. Under MEDIUM WA conditions, differences in leaf gas exchange were much smaller. At the beginning of the summer each irrigation frequency behaved better one of the measurements days, compensating at the end of the 4-day irrigation cycle. However, as the summer progressed and water deficit became higher, significant differences appeared only on ‘day 4’ of the irrigation cycle, when 2d plants behaved better than 4d plants. These physiological differences were smaller than under LOW WA conditions and apparently not sufficient to affect agronomical performance. Regarding water distribution pattern, the effect was less significant but the closest emitter spacing resulted in general terms in a higher leaf gas exchange, especially at midmorning. The effect was more noticeable for MEDIUM WA conditions. In Chapter 3, the relationships between leaf gas exchange and leaf water status and atmospheric demand were compared to explain the changes in the intensity of the physiological response observed in Chapter 2. No differences were found in the relationships for water distribution pattern, so only the effect of irrigation frequency was analyzed focusing on whether the plants have a different physiological response to changes in water status and atmospheric demand according to the time elapsed since the last irrigation. Differences observed in the relationships explained the results obtained in the previous chapters, and point at the occurrence of acclimation processes linked to irrigation frequency and to water availability. Plants under LOW WATER AVAILABILITY conditions seemed to be more acclimated to water stress than those under MEDIUM WATER AVAILABILITY conditions. Irrigation frequency clearly affected the relationship between leaf gas exchange parameters, plant water status and atmospheric conditions, and together with the amount of water applied had implications in the development of acclimation mechanisms that affected plant physiological response, thus affecting irrigation efficiency.

Many reports have shown that plant growth and yield is superior on mixtures of NO3− and NH4+ compared with provision of either N source alone. Despite its clear practical importance, the nature of this N-source synergism at the cellular level is poorly understood. In the present study we have used the technique of compartmental analysis by efflux and the radiotracer 13N to measure cellular turnover kinetics, patterns of flux partitioning, and cytosolic pool sizes of both NO3− and NH4+ in seedling roots of rice (Oryza sativa L. cv IR72), supplied simultaneously with the two N sources. We show that plasma membrane fluxes for NH4+, cytosolic NH4+ accumulation, and NH4+ metabolism are enhanced by the presence of NO3−, whereas NO3− fluxes, accumulation, and metabolism are strongly repressed by NH4+. However, net N acquisition and N translocation to the shoot with dual N-source provision are substantially larger than when NO3− or NH4+ is provided alone at identical N concentrations.

Chloroplast-targeted overexpression of an Fe superoxide dismutase (SOD) from Arabidopsis thaliana resulted in substantially increased foliar SOD activities. Ascorbate peroxidase, glutathione reductase, and monodehydroascorbate reductase activities were similar in the leaves from all of the lines, but dehydroascorbate reductase activity was increased in the leaves of the FeSOD transformants relative to untransformed controls. Foliar H2O2, ascorbate, and glutathione contents were comparable in all lines of plants. Irradiance-dependent changes in net CO2 assimilation and chlorophyll a fluorescence quenching parameters were similar in all lines both in air (21% O2) and at low (1%) O2. CO2-response curves for photosynthesis showed similar net CO2-exchange characteristics in all lines. In contrast, values of photochemical quenching declined in leaves from untransformed controls at intercellular CO2 (Ci) values below 200 μL L−1 but remained constant with decreasing Ci in leaves of FeSOD transformants. When the O2 concentration was decreased from 21 to 1%, the effect of FeSOD overexpression on photochemical quenching at limiting Ci was abolished. At high light (1000 μmol m−2 s−1) a progressive decrease in the ratio of variable (Fv) to maximal (Fm) fluorescence was observed with decreasing temperature. At 6oC the high-light-induced decrease in the Fv/Fm ratio was partially prevented by low O2 but values were comparable in all lines. Methyl viologen caused decreased Fv/Fm ratios, but this was less marked in the FeSOD transformants than in the untransformed controls. These observations suggest that the rate of superoxide dismutation limits flux through the Mehler-peroxidase cycle in certain conditions.

Gender differences in anthropometric and athletic properties (e.g. strength) as well as the different net heights (2.24 vs. 2.43 m) on the same field size (8x16 m) would be reflected in the game. The literature about differences between male and female playing characteristics in beach volleyball is scarce. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyse the differences by gender in the use of offensive zones. Study participants were 20 players (10 female and 10 male) who took part in the European Beach Volleyball Championship 2005 and 2006. Video recordings were made of the 659 points in eight matches played. The beach volleyball court was divided into six zones (z1 to z6). The results showed that men and women use different offensive zones and also were different in the percentages of ball out (15.53 and 27.38% respectively). Concretely, men players used more 1, 2, 4 and 5 zones and women 1 and 5 zones. A few differences were observed in the percentage the ball to the net (7.73 and 5.35% respectively). An understanding of the use of offensive zones is relevant to establish specific tactical training patterns for beach volleyball.

The notion of artificial atom relies on the capability to change the number of carriers one by one in semiconductor quantum dots, and the resulting changes in their electronic structure. Organic molecules with transition metal atoms that have a net magnetic moment and display hysteretic behaviour are known as single molecule magnets (SMM). The fabrication of CdTe quantum dots chemically doped with a controlled number of Mn atoms and with a number of carriers controlled either electrically or optically paves the way towards a new concept in nanomagnetism: the artificial single molecule magnet. Here we study the magnetic properties of a Mn-doped CdTe quantum dot for different charge states and show to what extent they behave like a single molecule magnet.

Purpose. To validate clinically a new method for estimating the corneal power (P,) using a variable keratometric index (nkadj) in eyes with previous laser refractive surgery. Setting. University of Alicante and Medimar International Hospital (Oftalmar), Alicante, (Spain). Design. Retrospective case series. Methods. This retrospective study comprised 62 eyes of 62 patients that had undergone myopic LASIK surgery. An algorithm for the calculation of 11kadj was used for the estimation of the adjusted keratometric corneal power (Pkadj). This value was compared with the classical keratometric corneal power (Pk), the True Net Power (TNP), and the Gaussian corneal power (PcGauss). Likewise, Pkadj was compared with other previously described methods. Results. Differences between PcGauss and P, values obtained with all methods evaluated were statistically significant (p < 0.01). Differences between Pkadj and PcGauss were in the limit of clinical significance (p < 0.01, loA [ - 0.33,0.60] D). Differences between Pkadj and TNP were not statistically and clinically significant (p = 0.319, loA [- 0.50,0.44] D). Differences between Pkadj and previously described methods were statistically significant (p < 0.01), except with PcHaigisL (p = 0.09, loA [ - 0.37,0.29] D). Conclusion. The use of the adjusted keratometric index (nkadj) is a valid method to estimate the central corneal power in corneas with previous myopic laser refractive surgery, providing results comparable to PcHaigisL.

The currency crisis that started in Russia and Ukraine during 2014 has spread to neighbouring countries in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). The collapse of the Russian ruble, expected recession in Russia, the stronger US dollar and lower commodity prices have negatively affected the entire region, with the consequence that the European Union's entire eastern neighbourhood faces serious economic, social and political challenges because of weaker currencies, higher inflation, decreasing export revenues and labour remittances, net capital outflows and stagnating or declining GDP. •The crisis requires a proper policy response from CIS governments, the International Monetary Fund and the EU. The Russian-Ukrainian conflict in Donbass requires rapid resolution, as the first step to return Russia to the mainstream of global economic and political cooperation. Beyond that, both Russia and Ukraine need deep structural and institutional reforms. The EU should deepen economic ties with those CIS countries that are interested in a closer relationship with Europe. The IMF should provide additional assistance to those CIS countries that have become victims of a new regional contagion, while preparing for the possibility of more emerging-market crises arising from slower growth, the stronger dollar and lower commodity prices.

The mesozooplankton community, with special emphasis on calanoid copepods, was studied with respect to its species composition, abundance, vertical distribution and developmental structure during the ISPOL expedition to the ice covered western Weddell Sea. Stratified zooplankton tows were carried out nine times between December 1, 2004 and January 2, 2005 with a multiple opening-closing net between 0 and 1000 m depth. Copepods were by far the most abundant taxon contributing more than 94% of the total mesozooplankton. Numerical dominants were cyclopoid copepods, mostly Oncaea spp. A total of 66 calanoid copepod species were identified, but the calanoid copepod community was characterised by the dominance of only a few species. The most numerous species was Microcalanus pygmaeus, which comprised on average 70% of all calanoids. Calanoides acutus and Metridia gerlachei represented other abundant calanoid species contributing an average of 8 and 7%, respectively. All other species comprised less than 3%. The temporal changes in the abundance and population structure of M. pygmaeus and M. gerlachei were small while a shift in the stage frequency distribution of C. acutus was observed during the study: CIV dominated the C. acutus population with 48 to 50% during the first week of December, while CV comprised 48% in late December. CI and CII of C. acutus were absent in the samples and males occurred only in very low numbers in greater depths. In M. gerlachei, CI was not found, whereas all developmental stages of M. pygmaeus occurred throughout the study. All three species showed migratory behaviour, and they occurred in upper water layers towards the end of the investigation. This vertical ascent was most pronounced in C. acutus and relatively weak in the other two species. In M. pygmaeus and M. gerlachei, copepodite stages were responsible for the upward migration in late December, while the vertical distribution of adults did not change. In C. acutus all abundant developmental stages (CIV, CV and females) ascended to upper water layers. Almost exclusively (93%) medium- and semi-ripe females of C. acutus and M. gerlachei were found, and only 3 - 4% of the ovaries were ripe. The absence of CI and the low number of ripe females indicate that the main reproductive period had not started in C. acutus and M. gerlachei until the end of our study in early January. In contrast, the high portion of CI and CII of M. pygmaeus suggests that reproduction of this species had started in October-November and hence, before the onset of the phytoplankton bloom in the water. The community structure did not differ between stations with one exception on December 26, when the station was strongly influenced by the continental shelf.

Here, we present bulk organic geochemical data from a spatial grid of surface samples from the western Barents Sea region. The results show that the distribution of organic carbon in surface sediments is predominantly controlled by input from land-derived terrigenous and in-situ produced marine organic matter. Inferred from various nitrogenous fractions and stable isotopes of bulk organic carbon we show that the spatial distribution of terrigenous organic carbon is independent of water depth, organic carbon mineralization and variable sedimentation rates. Instead, the pattern is predominantly controlled by sea ice-induced lateral transport and subsequent release in the Marginal Ice Zone (MIZ) as well as the distance to shore. Consistent with the observation of high vertical flux of particulate organic material in the MIZ, are amounts of marine organic carbon significantly enhanced in sediments below the winter ice margin. This is in accordance with modern observations suggesting that Arctic shelves with seasonal ice zones can be hot spots of vertical carbon export and thus a potential CO2 sink.

Leg 193 was the fourth Ocean Drilling Program expedition focusing on understanding subseafloor hydrothermal systems. This program was the first to combine studies of the volcanology, structure, hydrology, mineralization, and microbiology of a subseafloor hydrothermal system hosted by felsic rocks by coring at the PACMANUS hydrothermal field in the Manus Basin, Papua New Guinea. The study examines only the petrology and bulk rock and mineral chemistry of the freshest and most morphologically youthful lava flows recovered from the shallowest drill cores at the four sites occupied during Leg 193. There are subtle but distinct petrographic and geochemical variations between the closely spaced sites.
