Dielectric materials with high tunability, low loss, and desired range of permittivity are an attractive class of materials for a variety of applications in microwave components such as tunable filters, phase shifters, antennas, etc. In this article, we have investigated the low frequency dielectric properties of BaZrO3/BaTiO3 and SrTiO3/BaZrO3 superlattices of varying modulation periods for the potential application toward electrically tunable devices. The dielectric response of the superlattices as a function of temperature revealed remarkable stability for both types of superlattices, with no observed dielectric anomalies within that range. Dielectric losses were also nominally low with minimal variation within the measured temperature range. Sufficiently high tunability of ∼ 40% was observed for the BaZrO3/BaTiO3 superlattices at the lowest individual layer thicknesses. In comparison, the SrTiO3/BaZrO3 superlattices showed a minimum tunability for lowest period structures. It showed maximum tunability of ∼ 20% at 10 kHz and room temperature at an intermediate dimension of 3.85 nm periodicity superlattice. The tunability value degraded with increasing as well as decreasing periodicities for the SrTiO3/BaZrO3 superlattices. The dielectric response has been explained on the basis of size effects, interlayer coupling between dissimilar materials, domain contribution, and depolarizing electric fields.

Handling unbalanced and non-linear loads in a three-phase AC power supply has always been a difficult issue. This has been addressed in the literature by either using fast controllers in the fundamental rotating reference frame or using separate controllers in reference frames specific to the harmonics. In the former case, the controller needs to be fast and in the latter case, besides the need for many controllers, negative-sequence components need to be extracted from the measured signal. This study proposes a control scheme for harmonic and unbalance compensation of a three-phase uninterruptible power supply wherein the problems mentioned above are addressed. The control takes place in the fundamental positive-sequence reference frame using only a set of feedback and feed-forward compensators. The harmonic components are extracted by a process of frame transformations and used as feed-forward compensation terms in the positive-sequence fundamental reference frame. This study uses a method wherein the measured signal itself is used for fundamental negative-sequence compensation. As the feed-forward compensator handles the high-bandwidth components, the feedback compensator can be a simple low-bandwidth one. This control algorithm is explained and validated experimentally.

Addition of boron to cast Ti-6Al-4V alloy leads to significant refinement in grain size, which in turn improves processibilty as well as the mechanical properties of the as-cast alloy. Room temperature tensile and fatigue properties of Wrought Ti-6Al-4V-B alloys with B up to 0.09 wt.% are investigated. Thermo-mechanical processing at 950 degrees C caused kinking of alpha lamellae and alignment of TiB particles in the flow direction with a negligible change in prior beta grain and colony sizes, indicating the absence of dynamic recrystallisation during forging. Characterisation with the aid of X-ray and electron back scattered diffraction reveal a strong basal texture in B free alloy which gets randomised with the 0.09B addition in the forged condition. Marginal enhancement in tensile and fatigue properties upon forging is noted. B free wrought Ti-6Al-4V alloy exhibits better tensile strength as compared to B containing alloy, due to the operation of < c+a > slip on pyramidal planes with high value of CRSS as compared to < a > slip on basal and prismatic planes. Decrease in fatigue strength of Ti-6Al-4V-0.04B in as-cast and the wrought state is observed due to increase in the volume fraction of grain boundary a phase with B addition, which acts as a crack nucleation site. No significant effect of TiB particles on tensile and fatigue properties is observed. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Boron addition to conventional titanium alloys below the eutectic limit refines the cast microstructure and improves mechanical properties. The present work explores the influence of hypoeutectic boron addition on the microstructure and texture evolution in Ti-6Al-4V alloy under beta extrusion. The beta extruded microstructure of Ti-6Al-4V is characterized by shear bands parallel to the extrusion direction. In contrast, the extruded Ti-6Al-4V-0.1B alloy shows a regular beta worked microstructure consisting of fine prior beta grains and acicular alpha-lamellae with no signs of the microstructural instability. Crystallographic texture after extrusion was almost identical for the two alloys indicating the similarity in their transformation behavior, which is attributed to complete dynamic recrystallization during beta processing. Microstructural features as well as crystallographic texture indicate dominant grain boundary related deformation processes for the boron modified alloy that leads to homogeneous deformation without instability formation. The absence of shear bands has significant technological importance as far as the secondary processing of boron added alloys in (alpha + beta)-phase field are concerned. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. In the present study, asymmetric rolling was carried out for incorporating a shear component during the rolling at different temperatures, and was compared with conventional (symmetric) rolling. The microstructures were investigated using electron back-scatter diffraction (EBSD). The strain incorporated was compared with the help of grain orientation spread (GOS). GOS was eventually used as a criterion to partition the microstructure for separating the deformed and the dynamically recrystallized (DRX) grains. The texture of the partitioned DRX grains was shifted by similar to 30 degrees along the c-axis from the deformed grains. The mechanism of dynamic recrystallization (DRX) has been identified as continuous dynamic recovery and recrystallization (CDRR). The partitioned deformed grains for the higher temperature rolled specimens exhibited a texture similar to the room temperature rolled specimen. The asymmetric rolling introduces a shear component which shifts the texture fibre by similar to 5-10 degrees from the conventional rolling texture. This led to an increase in ductility with little compromise on strength. (c) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Thermoacoustic engines convert heat energy into high amplitude sound waves, which is used to drive thermoacoustic refrigerator or pulse tube cryocoolers by replacing the mechanical pistons such as compressors. The increasing interest in thermoacoustic technology is of its potentiality of no exotic materials, low cost and high reliability compared to vapor compression refrigeration systems. The experimental setup has been built based on the linear thermoacoustic model and some simple design parameters. The engines produce acoustic energy at the temperature difference of 325-450 K imposed along the stack of the system. This work illustrates the influence of stack parameters such as plate thickness (PT) and plate spacing (PS) with resonator length on the performance of thermoacoustic engine, which are measured in terms of onset temperature difference, resonance frequency and pressure amplitude using air as a working fluid. The results obtained from the experiments are in good agreement with the theoretical results from DeltaEc. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we report a significant improvement in mechanical and oxidation properties of near eutectic Nb-Si alloys by the addition of aluminum (Al) and control of microstructural length scale. A comparative study of two alloys Nb-18.79at%Si and Nb-12.3at%Si-9at%Al were carried out. The processing for microstructure refinements were carried out by vacuum suction casting in water cooled thick copper mould. It is shown that addition of Al suppresses Nb3Si phase and promotes beta Nb5Si3 phase under nonequilibrium solidification condition. The microstructural length scale and in particular eutectic spacing reduces significantly to 50-100 nm in suction cast ternary alloy. A detailed TEM study shows the presence of delta-Nb11Si4 phase in Nb matrix. The hardness of Nb solid solution can be increased as a consequence to a level observed in Nb3Si intermetallic due to the well oriented precipitates. Compression test yields the ultimate strength of 1.8 +/- 0.1 GPa and engineering strain of 2.3 +/- 0.03%. In comparison, the binary Nb-18.79 at% Si alloy possesses an ultimate strength of 1.35 +/- 0.1 GPa and strain of 0.2 +/- 0.01% when processed under identical conditions. The latter exhibits coarser microstructural length scale (300-400 nm) and a brittle behavior. The indentation fracture toughness of Al containing suction cast alloy shows a value of 20.2 +/- 0.5 MPa root m which represents a major improvement over bulk Nb-Si eutectic alloy. The detailed thermal studies confirm a multifold improvement in oxidation resistance up to 1000 degrees C. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The paper reports the effect of addition of small amount of Mg on the mechanical and oxidation properties of Nb-Nb3Si eutectic composites in Nb-Si system under the condition of suction casting. Mg addition increases the volume fraction of primary dendrites of Nb solid solution. This phase contains significant amount of strengthening precipitates. Two different precipitates are identified. The large plate shaped precipitates are that of hcp phase, while fine coherent precipitates have the structure similar to recently identified delta-Nb11Si2 phase. The Mg addition improves both the strength and ductility of the composite at room temperature (similar to 1.4 GPa and similar to 5% engineering strain) as well as at 700 degrees C(similar to 1.2 GPa and similar to 7% engineering strain). The presence of Mg results in a complex barrier layer which significantly increases the oxidation resistance up to a temperature of at least 1000 degrees C. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. Further miniaturization of magnetic and electronic devices demands thin films of advanced nanomaterials with unique properties. Spinel ferrites have been studied extensively owing to their interesting magnetic and electrical properties coupled with stability against oxidation. Being an important ferrospinel, zinc ferrite has wide applications in the biological (MRI) and electronics (RF-CMOS) arenas. The performance of an oxide like ZnFe2O4 depends on stoichiometry (defect structure), and technological applications require thin films of high density, low porosity and controlled microstructure, which depend on the preparation process. While there are many methods for the synthesis of polycrystalline ZnFe2O4 powder, few methods exist for the deposition of its thin films, where prolonged processing at elevated temperature is not required. We report a novel, microwave-assisted, low temperature (<100°C) deposition process that is conducted in the liquid medium, developed for obtaining high quality, polycrystalline ZnFe2O4 thin films on technologically important substrates like Si(100). An environment-friendly solvent (ethanol) and non-hazardous oxide precursors (β-diketonates of Zn and Fe in 1:2 molar ratio), forming a solution together, is subjected to irradiation in a domestic microwave oven (2.45 GHz) for a few minutes, leading to reactions which result in the deposition of ZnFe2O4 films on Si (100) substrates suspended in the solution. Selected surfactants added to the reactant solution in optimum concentration can be used to control film microstructure. The nominal temperature of the irradiated solution, i.e., film deposition temperature, seldom exceeds 100°C, thus sharply lowering the thermal budget. Surface roughness and uniformity of large area depositions (50x50 mm2) are controlled by tweaking the concentration of the mother solution. Thickness of the films thus grown on Si (100) within 5 min of microwave irradiation can be as high as several microns. The present process, not requiring a vacuum system, carries a very low thermal budget and, together with a proper choice of solvents, is compatible with CMOS integration. This novel solution-based process for depositing highly resistive, adherent, smooth ferrimagnetic films on Si (100) is promising to RF engineers for the fabrication of passive circuit components. It is readily extended to a wide variety of functional oxide films.

In this study tensile properties of consolidated magnesium chips obtained from solid state re-cycling (SSR) has been examined and correlated with the microstructure. Chips machined from as-cast billet of pure magnesium were consolidated through SSR technique, comprising of compaction at ambient conditions followed by hot extrusion at four different temperatures viz., 250, 300, 350 and 400 degrees C. The extruded rods were characterized for microstructure and their room temperature tensile properties. Both ultimate tensile strength and 0.2% proof stress of these consolidated materials are higher by 15-35% compared to reference material (as cast and extruded). Further these materials obey Hall-Petch relation with respect to strength dependence of grain size. Strain hardening behavior, measured in terms of hardening exponent, hardening capacity and hardening rate was found to be distinctly different in chip consolidated material compared to reference material. Strength asymmetry, measured as a ratio of compressive proof stress to tensile proof stress was higher in chip consolidated material. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We develop a unified model to explain the dynamics of driven one dimensional ribbon for materials with strain and magnetic order parameters. We show that the model equations in their most general form explain several results on driven magnetostrictive metallic glass ribbons such as the period doubling route to chaos as a function of a dc magnetic field in the presence of a sinusoidal field, the quasiperiodic route to chaos as a function of the sinusoidal field for a fixed dc field, and induced and suppressed chaos in the presence of an additional low amplitude near resonant sinusoidal field. We also investigate the influence of a low amplitude near resonant field on the period doubling route. The model equations also exhibit symmetry restoring crisis with an exponent close to unity. The model can be adopted to explain certain results on magnetoelastic beam and martensitic ribbon under sinusoidal driving conditions. In the latter case, we find interesting dynamics of a periodic one orbit switching between two equivalent wells as a function of an ac magnetic field that eventually makes a direct transition to chaos under resonant driving condition. The model is also applicable to magnetomartensites and materials with two order parameters. (C) 2013 American Institute of Physics. http://dx.doi.org/10.1063/1.4790845]

The plastic deformation behavior and dynamic recrystallization (DRX) in homogenized AZ31 Mg alloy was investigated in uniaxial compression in the temperature range between 150 and 400 degrees C with strain rates ranging from 10(-3) to 10(2) s(-1). Twinning was found to contribute significantly during the early stages of deformation. The onset of twinning was examined in detail by recourse to the examination of the appearance of first local maxima before peak strain in the stress-strain responses and the second derivative of stress with strain. High strain hardening rate was observed immediately after the onset of twinning and was found to increase with the Zener-Hollomon parameter. DRX was observed at temperatures above 250 degrees C whereas deformation at lower temperatures (< 250 degrees C) leads to extensive twinning at all the strain rates. At intermediate temperatures of 250-300 degrees C, plastic strains tend to localize near grain/twin boundaries, confining DRX only to these regions. Increase in the temperature promotes non-basal slip, which, in turn, leads to uniform deformation; DRX too becomes uniform. Deformation behavior in three different regimes of temperature is discussed. The dependence of critical stress for the onset of DRX and peak flow stress on temperature and strain rate are also described. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The magnetic saw effect, induced by the Lorentz force generated due to the application of a series of electromagnetic ( EM) pulses, can be utilized to cut a metallic component containing a pre-existing cut or crack. By combining a mechanical force with the Lorentz force, the cut can be propagated along any arbitrary direction in a controlled fashion, thus producing an `electromagnetic jigsaw', yielding a novel tool-less, free-formed manufacturing process, particularly suitable for hard-to-cut metals. This paper presents validation of the above concept based on a simple analytical model, along with experiments on two materials - Pb foil and steel plate. (C) 2013 The Authors.
