A statistical thermodynamics theory of polydisperse polymer mixtures with strong interaction between dissimilar components based on a lattice fluid model is formulated. Expressions for the free energy, equation of state, phase stability and spinodal for a polydisperse, binary polymer mixture with strong interaction are derived.

The first thermodynamic dissociation constants of glycine in 5, 15 mass % glucose + water mixed solvents at five temperatures from 5 to 45-degrees-C have been determined from precise emf measurements of a cell without liquid junction using hydrogen and Ag-AgCl electrodes and a new method of polynomial approximation proposed on the basis of Pitzer's electrolytic solution theory in our previous paper. The results obtained from both methods agree within experimental error. The standard free energy of transfer for HCl from water to aqueous mixed solvent have been calculated and the results are discussed.

The crystallization kinetics in mixtures of poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) and poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) (SAN) has been investigated as the function of composition and crystallization temperature. The isothermal growth rates of PCL spherulites decrease with increasing concentration of SAN. Because of the miscibility of PCL/SAN mixtures, the radial growth rates of the spherulites are described by a kinetic equation including the interaction parameter and the free energy for the formation of crystal nuclei. The interaction parameter obtained from the fitting of the kinetic equation with experimental data is in good agreement with that obtained from melting point depression. Folding surface free energies decrease with the increase of SAN concentration. In light of these results, it is suggested that, for the PCL/SAN mixtures, the noncrystallizable SAN polymer reduces the mobility of crystallizable PCL polymer so that the growth rates decrease with the increase of noncrystallizable component fraction.

The crystallization and melting behaviour of poly(aryl-ether-ether-ketone) (PEEK) in blends with another polymer of the same family containing a bulky pendant phenolphthalein group (PEK-C) have been investigated by thermal methods. The small interaction energy density of the polymer pair (B = -8.99 J/cm3), evaluated from equilibrium melting point depression, is consistent with the T(g) data that indicate partial miscibility in the melt. Two conjugated phases are in equilibrium at 430-degrees-C: one is crystallizable and contains about 35 wt% of PEK-C; the other, containing only 15 wt% of PEEK, does not form crystals upon cooling and it interferes with the development of spherulites in the sample. The analysis of kinetic data according to nucleation theories shows that crystallization of PEEK in the explored temperature range takes place in Regime III and that a transition to Regime II might be a consequence of an increase in the amount of non-crystallizable molecules in the PEEK-rich phase. A composition independent value of the end surface free energy of PEEK lamellae has been derived from kinetic data (sigma-e = 40 +/- 4 erg/cm2) in excellent agreement with previous thermodynamic estimates. A new value for the equilibrium melting temperature of PEEK (T(m)-degrees = 639 K) has been obtained; it is about 30-degrees-C lower than the commonly accepted value and it explains better the "memory effect" in the crystallization from the melt of this high performance polymer.

Deposition potentials of Lithium and Sodium ions have been measured in binary chloride systems (LiCl-KCl, NaCl-KCl) by I-V curve method, to provide a theoretical base for preparing high purity Al-Li alloy by electrolysis in molten salt. The changes of free energy and enthalpy were calculated in terms of depolarization values on Al cathode. Thermodynamic meaning of depolarization was discussed in details and the empirical relation between binary alloy type and depolarization type was proposed. It is shown for the first time that the presence of a third element in Al-Li alloy can strengthen depolarization of Li ion at Al alloy cathode and give foundation for preparing high purity Al-Li-M ternary alloy. The effect of LiCl concentration on deposition potentials of Li ion at Al cathode in KCl-LiCl melt was studied and average active coefficient of LiCl was obtained.

Thermal behaviour of gamma-irradiated plain PA1010 and PA1010 containing different amounts of difunctional cross-linking agent BMI was investigated. In DSC endo- and exotherm, it was found that during irradiation, the presence of BMI markedly changes the melting and crystallisation characteristics of PA1010. A supposition that the network of BMI-containing specimens is rather loose in structure was proposed to explain the discrepancy in thermal behaviour between these two kinds of specimens. The supposition was further ascertained by the less brittleness in mechanical property of specimens containing BMI. Besides, the complexity of the thermal behaviour of gamma-irradiated PA1010 was discussed and attributed mainly to the increase in sigma-e, the fold surface free energy of chain fold crystals.

The adsorption of cationic surfactant cetylpyridinium bromide (CPB) on a glassy carbon (GC) electrode surface has been studied by spectroelectrochemistry with a long optical path length thin-layer cell (LOPTLC) for the first time. A fine adsorption isotherm of CPB molecules from an aqueous solution containing 0.10 M KBr has been obtained over the range of (1.00-8.00) x 10(-5) M. From theoretical calculation and experimental data, adsorption of CPB on the GC electrode surface shows four distinct orientations and three large orientation transitions. Compared with the ordinary isotherm, the differential isotherm is more characteristic and would be suitable for the study of orientation transitions of organic compounds. With a theoretical treatment of the adsorption isotherm, four orientations of adsorbed CPB on a GC electrode surface coincide with the Frumkin-Langmuir type. From adsorption parameters the Frumkin-Langmuir equations, the adsorption free energy and, therefore, the equilibrium constants of orientation transitions of the CPB molecule can be obtained.

The principal tidal constituents M-2, S-2, K-1 and O-1 in the South China Sea, Gulf of Tonkin and Gulf of Thailand are simulated simultaneously using the numerical scheme of Kwok et al. (1995 Proceedings of the 1st Asian Computational Fluid Dynamics Conference, pp. 16-19). The average differences between the computed and observed harmonic constants are mostly within 5 cm and 10 degrees for amplitudes and phase-lags, respectively. The simulated tidal regimes in the present model are believed to be more accurate than the previous numerical results. Our studies confirm that a clockwise rotating M-2 amphidromic system lies in the southeast of the Gulf of Thailand and an S-2 amphidromic system at the near-shore area of the northeast South China Sea. The linear tidal energy equation developed by Garrett (1975 Deep-Sea Research 22, 23-35) is generalized to the nonlinear case. Based on the numerical results, the energy budgets in the South China Sea and its subareas, namely the Taiwan Strait, the Gulf of Tonkin, the Gulf of Thailand and the remaining area are investigated. The tidal motion in the Taiwan Strait is maintained mainly by the energy fluxes from the East China Sea for both semidiurnal and diurnal species and partially from the Luzon Strait for semidiurnal species. For the other parts of the South China Sea, the tidal motion is mainly maintained by the energy fluxes through the Luzon Strait. The energy inputs from the tide-generating force are negative for semidiurnal species and positive for diurnal species. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

The title compound 1-(4,5-dihydro-3-phenylpyridine-1-yl)-2-(1H-1,2,4-triazole-1-yl)ethyl ketone (DTE) was synthesized and its inhibiting action on the corrosion of mild steel in 1 M hydrochloric acid solutions was investigated by means of weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and scanning electronic microscope (SEM). Results obtained revealed that DIE performed excellently as a corrosion inhibitor for mild steel in 1 M hydrochloric acid media and its efficiency attains more than 90.9% at 1.0 x 10(-3) M at 298 K. Polarization curves indicated that the inhibitor behave mainly as mixed-type inhibitor. EIS showed that the charge transfer controls the corrosion process in the uninhibited and inhibited solutions. Adsorption of the inhibitor on the mild steel surface followed Langmuir adsorption isotherm. And the values of the free energy of adsorption Delta G(ads) indicated that the adsorption of DTE molecule was a spontaneous process and was typical of chemisorption. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. Two triazole derivatives, 3,4-dichloro-acetophenone-O-1'-(1',3',4'-triazolyl)-methaneoxime (4-DTM) and 2,5-dichloro-acetophenone-O-1'-(1',3',4'-triazolyl)-methaneoxime (5-DTM) were synthesized, and the inhibition effects for mild steel in 1 M HCl solutions were investigated by weight loss measurements, electrochemical tests and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM). The weight loss measurements showed that these compounds have excellent inhibiting effect at a concentration of 1.0 x 10(-3) M. The potentiodynamic polarization experiment revealed that the triazole derivatives are inhibitors of mixed-type and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) confirmed that changes in the impedance parameters (R-ct and C-dl) are due to surface adsorption. The inhibition efficiencies obtained from weight loss measurements and electrochemical tests were in good agreement. Adsorption followed the Langmuir isotherm with negative values of the free energy of adsorption Delta G(ads)(o). The thermodynamic parameters of adsorption were determined and are discussed. Results show that both 4-DTM and 5-DTM are good inhibitors for mild steel in acid media.

Phenolic marine natural product is a kind of new potential aldose reductase inhibitors (ARIs). In order to investigate the binding mode and inhibition mechanism, molecular docking and dynamics studies were performed to explore the interactions of six phenolic inhibitors with human aldose reductase (hALR2). Considering physiological environment, all the neutral and other two ionized states of each phenolic inhibitor were adopted in the simulation. The calculations indicate that all the inhibitors are able to form stable hydrogen bonds with the hALR2 active pocket which is mainly constructed by residues TYR48, HIS110 and TRP111, and they impose the inhibition effect by occupying the active space. In all inhibitors, only La and its two ionized derivatives La_ion1 and La_ion2, in which neither of the ortho-hydrogens of 3-hydroxyl is substituted by Br, bind with hALR2 active residues using the terminal 3-hydroxyl. While, all the other inhibitors, at least one of whose ortho-sites of 3- and 6-hydroxyls are substituted by Br substituent which take much electron-withdrawing effect and steric hindrance, bind with hALR2 through the lactone group. This means that the Br substituent can effectively regulate the binding modes of phenolic inhibitors. Although the lactone bound inhibitors have relatively high RMSD values, our dynamics study shows that both binding modes are of high stability. For each inhibitor molecule, the ionization does not change its original binding mode, but it does gradually increase the binding free energy, which reveals that besides hydrogen bonds, the electrostatic effect is also important to the inhibitor–hALR2 interaction.

The determination of the composition and structure of the Earth’s inner core has long been the major subject in the study of the Earth’s deep interior. It’s widely believed that the Earth’s core is formed by iron with a fraction of nickel. However, light elements must exist in the inner core because the earth core is less dense than pure iron-nickel alloy (~2-3% in the solid inner core and ~6-7% in the liquid outer core). The questions are what and how much light element is there in the iron-nickel alloy. Besides the composition, the crystal structure of the iron with or without light element is also not well known. According to the seismological observations, the sound waves propagate 3-4% faster along the spin axis than in the equatorial plane. That means the inner core is anisotropic. The densest structure of iron-nickel alloy should be h.c.p structure under the very high pressures. However, the h,c,p structure does not propagate waves anisotropic ally. Then what is the structure of the iron-nickel alloy or the iron-nickle-light element alloy. In this study, we tried to predict the composition and the structure of the inner core through ab initio calculation of the Gibbs free energy, which is a function of internal energy, density and entropy. We conclude that the h.c.p structure is more stable than the b.c.c structure under high pressure and 0 K, but with the increase of temperature, the free energy of the b.c.c structure is decreasing much faster than the h.c.p structure caused by the vibration of the atomics, so the b.c.c structure is more stable at high temperatures. With the addition of light elements (S or Si or both), the free energy of b.c.c. decreases even faster, about 3at% of Si not only explains why the inner core is about 2-3 % lighter than the iron-nickle alloy, but also reasons why the inner core is anisotropic, since the b.c.c. structure becomes more stable than the h.c.p structure at 5500-6000K and b.c.c. is anisotropic in propagating seismic waves. Therefore, we infer that the inner core of the earth is formed by b.c.c iron and a fraction of nickel plus ~3at.% Si, with a temperature higher than 5500K, which is consistent with the studies from other approaches.

The heat capacity of nanostructured amorphous SiO2 (na-SiO2) has been measured by adiabatic calorimetric method over the temperature range 9-354 K. TG and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) were also employed to determine the thermal stability. Glass transition temperature (T-g) for the two same grain sizes with different specific surface of naSiO(2) samples and one coarse-grained amorphous SiO2 (ca-SiO2) sample were determined to be 1377, 1397 and 1320 K, respectively. The low temperature experimental results show that there are significant heat capacity (C-P) enhancements among na-SiO2 samples and ca-SiO2. Entropy, enthalpy, Gibbs free energy and Debye temperature (theta (D)) were obtained based on the low temperature heat capacity measurement of na-SiO2. The Cp enhancements of na-SiO2 were discussed in terms of configurational and vibrational entropy. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

To study the transport mechanism of hydrophobic organic chemicals (HOCs) and the energy change in soil/solvent system, a soil leaching column chromatographic (SLCC) experiment at an environmental temperature range of 20-40 degreesC was carried out, which utilized a reference soil (SP 14696) packed column and a methanol-water (1:4 by volume ratio) eluent. The transport process quickens with the increase of column temperature. The ratio of retention factors at 30 and 40 degreesC (k'(30)/k'(40)) ranged from 1.08 to 1.36. The lower enthalpy change of the solute transfer in SLCC (from eluent to soil) than in conventional reversed-phase liquid chromatography (e.g., from eluent to C-18) is consistent with the hypothesis that HOCs were dominantly and physically partitioned between solvent and soil. The results were also verified by the linear solvation energy relationships analysis. The chief factor controlling the retention was found to be the solute solvophobic partition, and the second important factor was the solute hydrogen-bond basicity, while the least important factors were the solute polarizability-dipolarity and hydrogen-bond acidity. With the increase of temperature, the contributions of the solute solvophobic partition and hydrogen-bond basicity gradually decrease, and the latter decreases faster than the former. Computer simulations of reaction processes in solution in general rely on the definition of a reaction coordinate and the determination of the thermodynamic changes of the system along the reaction coordinate. The reaction coordinate often is constituted of characteristic geometrical properties of the reactive solute species, while the contributions of solvent molecules are implicitly included in the thermodynamics of the solute degrees of freedoms. However, solvent dynamics can provide the driving force for the reaction process, and in such cases explicit description of the solvent contribution in the free energy of the reaction process becomes necessary. We report here a method that can be used to analyze the solvent contributions to the reaction activation free energies from the combined QM/MM minimum free-energy path simulations. The method was applied to the self-exchange S(N)2 reaction of CH(3)Cl + Cl(-), showing that the importance of solvent-solute interactions to the reaction process. The results were further discussed in the context of coupling between solvent and solute molecules in reaction processes.
