Ha sido diseñada e instalada en el Departamento de Ingeniería Rural de la Universidad Politécnica de Madrid una línea experimental de manipulación de fruta con el objetivo de mejorar elementos mecánicos y condiciones de manipulación para reducir daños a la fruta. La línea experimental consta de varias cintas transportadoras, un transportador de rodillos, un calibrador de diábolos, un elevador, un alineador y tres bandejas de salida para la fruta calibrada. La línea tiene una longitud de 6.15 m y una anchura de 1.9 m. Los diferentes elementos de la línea están accionados por motores eléctricos con velocidad variable controlada electrónicamente. La altura de los puntos de transferencia es variable y puede ser modificada con facilidad. La línea experimental ha sido calibrada utilizando dos frutos electrónicos IS 100 (8.8 cm Ø y 6.2 cm Ø). Los impactos registrados por los frutos electrónicos permanecen por debajo de 80 g's en todos los puntos de transferencia.

Damages -reduced in fruit packing lines is a major cause of grace reduction and quality loos in fresh marks: fruit. Fruit must be treated gently during in sir handling to improve their qualityin order to get a good price in a competitive market. The correct post-hardvest handling in fruit packing lines is a prerequisite to cut down the heavy post-harvest losses. Fruit packing lines must be evaluated, studying their design, the impacts applied to the fruits, the characteristics of the materials, etc. This study establishes the possibility of carrying out modifications and tests in a packing line during a long period of time. For this purpose, an experimental fruit packing line has been designed and located in the Agricultural Engineering Department of the Polythecnic University of Madrid with the aim of improving mechanical devices and fruit handling conditions to minimize damage to fruit. The experimental line consists of several transporting belts, one rollers transporter, one sizer, one elevator, one singularizer, and three trays to receive the calibrated fruit. The line has a length of 6.15 m and a width cf 1.9 m. Movement of the different components is regulated by electric motors with variable velocity electronically controlled. The height of the transfer points is variable and can be easily modified. The experimental line has been calibrated using two instrumented spheres IS 100 (8.8 cm Ø and6.2cm Ø). Average acceleration values obtained in all the transfers of the experimental line lay under 80 g's, although there is big variation for some of them being some values above 100 g's.

Characteristics of the impacts suffered by the fruit on a transfer point of an experimental fruit packing line were analysed. The transfer is made up by two transporting belts at different heights forming an angle of 90°. These transfer points are very common in fruit packing lines, in which fruits receive two impacts: the first onto the belt base and the second into the lateral plate. Different tests were earned out to study the effect of transfer height, velocity, belt structure and padding on tire acceleration values recorded by an instrumental sphere (IS 100). Results showed that transfer height and belt structure affect mainly impact values on the belt base, and padding affects mainly impact values registered in lateral impact. The effect of belt velocity in both impacts is less important when compared to the rest of the variables. Additionally, two powered transfer decelerators were tested at the same point with the aim of decreasing impacts suffered by the fruit. Comparing impacts registered using these decelerators to those analysed in the first part of the study without decelerators a high reduction of the impact values was observed.

Padding materials are commonly used in fruit packing lines with the objective of diminishing impact damage in postharvest handling. Two sensors, instrumented sphere IS 100 and impact tester, have been compared to analyze the performance of six different padding materials used in Spanish fruit packing lines. Padding materials tested have been classified according to their capability to decrease impact intensities inflicted to fruit in packing lines. A procedure to test padding materials has been developed for "Golden" apples. Its basis is a logistic regression to predict bruise probability in fruit. The model combines two kinds of parameters: padding material parameters measured with IS, and fruit properties.

Different parameters are used to quantify the maturity of fruits at or near harvest (shape, color, flesh texture and internal composition). Flesh firmness is a critical handling parameter for fruits such as peach, pear and apple. Results of previous studies conducted by different researchers have shown that impact techniques can be used to evaluate firmness of fruits. A prototype impact system for firmness sorting of fruits was developed by Chen and Ruiz-Altisent (Chen et al, 1996). This sensor was mounted and tested successfully on a 3 m section of a commercial conveyor belt (Chen et al, 1998). This is a further development of the on-line impact system for firmness sorting of fruits. The design of the sensor has been improved and it has been mounted on a experimental fruit packing line (Ortiz-Cañavate et al 1999).

Se han realizado diferentes ensayos con el objetivo de analizar la problemática de los impactos manzana-manzana en las líneas de manipulación de fruta. Para ello se ha utilizado una línea experimental de manipulación de frutas en la que se han evaluado las características de estos impactos en función de diferentes factores: características del producto, flujo de producto en línea y características de los puntos de transferencia entre elementos de la línea. Una vez conocida la problemática de los impactos fruto-fruto, se ha desarrollado un elemento decelerador accionado para minimizar dichos impactos en una transferencia en 90° entre dos cintas transportadoras. El elemento decelerador ha sido evaluado comparando su eficacia con otros sistemas. En los diferentes ensayos se han utilizado frutos electrónicos IS 100 y manzanas "Golden".

A non destructive impact sensor to measure fruit firmness has been installed on the sizer chain of an experimental fruit packing line. The sensor measures the fruit firmness related to the acceleration-time curve supplied by an accelerometer attached to an impacting arm. The sensor works correctly at a speed of 5 to 7 fruits per second. Ratio A/t (maximum acceleration value divided by its corresponding time), mean, and maximum slopes of the curves supplied by the accelerometer, were well correlated with the firmness data obtained in laboratory with the load-unload test. The accelerometer signal allows the classification of the fruit in three levels of firmness, by means of a specific software.

The increasing of quality fruit demanded by the consumers is originating an advance in the development and application of sensors capable of measuring parameters of quality (sugar, acids, firmness, etc) on a non destructive way. Some of these sensors are already operative for their use in laboratory and even in lines. The Physical Properties laboratory of the Polytechnic University of Madrid, is developing different sensors for their implementation in lines. One of them is a non destructive impact sensor to measure fruit firmness.

Este trabajo esta orientado a resolver el problema de la caracterización de la copa de arboles frutales para la aplicacion localizada de fitosanitarios. Esta propuesta utiliza un mapa de profundidad (Depth image) y una imagen RGB combinadas (RGB-D), proporcionados por el sensor Kinect de Microsoft, para aplicar pesticidas de forma localizada. A través del mapa de profundidad se puede estimar la densidad de la copa y a partir de esta información determinar qué boquillas se deben abrir en cada momento. Se desarrollaron algoritmos implementados en Matlab que permiten además de la adquisición de las imágenes RGB-D, aplicar plaguicidas sólo a hojas y/o frutos según se desee. Estos algoritmos fueron implementados en un software que se comunica con el entorno de desarrollo "Kinect Windows SDK", encargado de extraer las imágenes desde el sensor Kinect. Por otra parte, para identificar hojas, se implementaron algoritmos de clasificación e identificación. Los algoritmos de clasificación utilizados fueron "Fuzzy C-Means con Gustafson Kessel" (FCM-GK) y "K-Means". Los centroides o prototipos de cada clase generados por FCM-GK fueron usados como semilla para K-Means, para acelerar la convergencia del algoritmo y mantener la coherencia temporal en los grupos generados por K-Means. Los algoritmos de clasificación fueron aplicados sobre las imágenes transformadas al espacio de color L*a*b*; específicamente se emplearon los canales a*, b* (canales cromáticos) con el fin de reducir el efecto de la luz sobre los colores. Los algoritmos de clasificación fueron configurados para buscar cuatro grupos: hojas, porosidad, frutas y tronco. Una vez que el clasificador genera los prototipos de los grupos, un clasificador denominado Máquina de Soporte Vectorial, que utiliza como núcleo una función Gaussiana base radial, identifica la clase de interés (hojas). La combinación de estos algoritmos ha mostrado bajos errores de clasificación, rendimiento del 4% de error en la identificación de hojas. Además, estos algoritmos de procesamiento de hasta 8.4 imágenes por segundo, lo que permite su aplicación en tiempo real. Los resultados demuestran la viabilidad de utilizar el sensor "Kinect" para determinar dónde y cuándo aplicar pesticidas. Por otra parte, también muestran que existen limitaciones en su uso, impuesta por las condiciones de luz. En otras palabras, es posible usar "Kinect" en exteriores, pero durante días nublados, temprano en la mañana o en la noche con iluminación artificial, o añadiendo un parasol en condiciones de luz intensa.

Arundo donax L., commonly known as giant reed or arundo, is a perennial rhizomatous grass that has been studied since the decade of 1980 for bioenergy. In the Mediterranean region -characterised by dry and hot summers- arundo is usually grown with the support of irrigation. However, there is evidence that this plant species can tolerate dry-farming conditions once the crop is fully established. In this work the variation observed in plant growth of a 5-year-old arundo crop when the management changed from irrigated to dry-farming, is assessed.
