Beyond GDP: Methodological and measurement issues in redefining “wealth”

In the last decades; a growing stock of literature has been devoted to the criticism of GDP as an indicator of societal wealth. A relevant question is: what are the perspectives to build, on the existing knowledge and consensus, alternative measures of prosperity? A starting point may be to connect well-being research agenda with the sustainability one. However, there is no doubt that there is a lot of complexity and fuzziness inherent in multidimensional concepts such as sustainability and well-being. This article analyses the theoretical foundations and the empirical validity of some multidimensional technical tools that can be used for well-being evaluation and assessment. Of course one should not forget that policy conclusions derived through any mathematical model depend also on the conceptual framework used, i.e. which representation of reality (and thus which societal values and interests) has been considered.

Le point sur le traitement de l'hépatite C chronique [An update on the management of chronic hepatitis C]

Treatment of chronic hepatitis C with pegylated interferon-a and ribavirin is now adapted individually based on the virological response on treatment. This approach should improve the tolerability while maintaining or even improving in some patients the efficacy of antiviral therapy. Several new antiviral drugs are currently being evaluated in advanced clinical trials, with very promising results. These new drugs should greatly broaden treatment options for chronic hepatitis C in the near future.

Bilinear models for spatio-temporal point distribution analysis: application to extrapolation of left ventricular, biventricular and whole heart cardiac dynamics

In this work we describe the usage of bilinear statistical models as a means of factoring the shape variability into two components attributed to inter-subject variation and to the intrinsic dynamics of the human heart. We show that it is feasible to reconstruct the shape of the heart at discrete points in the cardiac cycle. Provided we are given a small number of shape instances representing the same heart atdifferent points in the same cycle, we can use the bilinearmodel to establish this. Using a temporal and a spatial alignment step in the preprocessing of the shapes, around half of the reconstruction errors were on the order of the axial image resolution of 2 mm, and over 90% was within 3.5 mm. From this, weconclude that the dynamics were indeed separated from theinter-subject variability in our dataset.

Qualidade de vida de mulheres vivendo com o HIV/aids de um município do interior paulista

A terapia antirretroviral de alta potência beneficia os indivíduos com HIV/aids na sobrevida, cronicidade e qualidade de vida. Este estudo de corte transversal, com abordagem quantitativa, objetivou avaliar a qualidade de vida de mulheres com HIV/aids, utilizando o WHOQOL - HIV bref e sua associação com variáveis sociodemográficas. Foi realizado em dois ambulatórios especializados no atendimento a indivíduos com HIV/aids. De 106 mulheres participantes, 99,1% eram heterossexuais e 92,4% foram infectadas por via sexual. Dentre os domínios de qualidade de vida, espiritualidade obteve maior escore (65,7), seguido pelo físico (64,7), psicológico (60,6), relações sociais (59,5). Menores escores foram atingidos nos domínios nível de independência (58,6) e meio ambiente (54,5). Evidenciou-se que os fatores baixo nível socioeconômico e educacional tiveram associação com diferentes domínios, denotando a relação entre qualidade de vida e condições de vida. Concluiu-se que persistem os desafios no âmbito das relações sociais, afetivas, financeiras, requerendo intervenções efetivas focando o empoderamento das mulheres com HIV/aids.

O monitoramento de processos físicos de esterilização em hospitais do interior do estado de Goiás

Estudo descritivo com o objetivo de identificar a realização de controles físicos, químicos e biológicos dos processos de esterilização pelo vapor saturado sob pressão e em estufas de Pasteur em Centros de Material e Esterilização - CME. Os dados foram obtidos por meio de entrevista ao responsável pelo CME do maior hospital de todas as cidades do interior do Estado de Goiás, com número de habitantes igual ou superior a 20.000, no período de agosto de 2005 a junho de 2006. Participaram 44 municípios. Foi utilizado o programa SPSS, para análise. Em 31 (94,0%) hospitais não havia enfermeiros exclusivos no CME, os responsáveis eram técnicos e auxiliares de enfermagem. A maioria não realizava os controles físicos, químicos e biológicos dos processos de esterilização e, em apenas um, esses eram realizados simultaneamente. O descumprimento da monitorização dos ciclos de esterilização, impedindo a garantia da qualidade dos processos, representa risco à população assistida.

The Point system of selection of immigrants in Quebec

The present paper is aimed at identifying what are the effects of the Point System of Selection of immigrants in Quebec. I defend that the distribution of points results in a different composition of immigrant stocks in terms of origin mix and not in terms of labour skills. To do so, I carry out a longitudinal descriptive analysis on the national composition of immigrants in Quebec and two other significant provinces (Ontario and British Columbia), as well as an analysis of the distribution of points in Quebec and in the rest of Canada.

Este trabajo consiste en un análisis comparativo del monólogo interior de dos fragmentos modernistas pertenecientes a The Waves de Virginia Woolf y Ulysses de James Joyce. Asimismo, se contextualizan las dos obras y se definen conceptos relacionados con el monólogo interior, como, el stream of consciousness o el soliloquio.
