Light intensity preference of the pikeperch was tested in 1-m(2) tanks divided into four lateral compartments with a hole in the middle to allow the fish to move between compartments. Two experiments were carried out with both 0+ and 1+ pikeperch: one testing intensities from 25 to 300 lx and the other from 1 to 50 lx. Light preference was observed individually for 5 days at 8, 11, 14 and 17 h. on the first and fifth day, the preference was tested without differences in light intensity (control). In both experiments, both age groups showed preference for the lowest available light intensity. Preference for low light intensity in pikeperch may be related to innate activity and feeding behaviour and to avoidance of harmful effects of light. It is suggested that under aquaculture operations, pikeperch should be reared under very dim conditions.

We tested the effects of monochromatic light on the specific growth rate (SGR), feed intake and feed efficiency (FE) of juvenile pikeperch, Sander lucioperca (L.). Pikeperch were reared individually for 42 days in aquaria covered with blue, green, yellow or red gelatin filters or white paper (control; n=5). Linear regression analysis indicated a significant positive effect of longer wavelengths of light on the condition factor (CF), FE and SGR. The final weight, SGR and CF were significantly higher in fish reared under red than under white light, and FE was better under green, yellow and red light than under white light (Dunnett's post hoc test, P < 0.05) while blue was comparable to white light in terms of the measured parameters. After the growth trial, the spectral sensitivity of photoreceptor cells in the retina was tested using microspectrophotometry, which revealed the presence of rods with lambda(max) at ca. 530 nm and two cone classes, absorbing maximally at ca. 535 and 603 nm, all containing a porphyropsin-based pigment. These results suggest that the presence of mid and long wavelength-sensitive cones enhances visual sensitivity under mid-wavelength and long-wavelength environments, and thus supports the finding that longer wavelengths of incoming light can improve FE and SGR of the cultivated pikeperch.

Background. This cross-sectional study was designed to evaluate the role of cigarette smoking and high-risk HPV types as risk factors of CIN 2 and 3 in young, sexually active Brazilian women. Materials and method. A series of 100 consecutive women with abnormal Pap smears were recruited, subjected to colposcopy, punch biopsy, and questionnaire for their social, sexual and reproductive factors. Of these, 77 women between 20 and 35 years of age (median 26.5 years) with biopsy-confirmed CIN 1 or CIN 2 and 3, were enrolled in this study. Representative samples from the exocervix and endocervix were obtained for HPV testing with the Hybrid Capture HPV-DNA assay, including the probes for the oncogenic HPV types (16, 18, 31, 33, 35, 45, 51, 52 and 56). Results. The overall rate of CIN 2 and 3 was 23/77 (29.8%). The women with CIN 1, 2 and 3 did not differ from each other with regard to their age, race, schooling, marital status, life-time number of sexual partners, age at first intercourse, use of oral contraceptives, or parity. However, current cigarette smoking was strongly associated with CIN 2 and 3 (p < 0,001), and among smokers, the risk of high-grade CIN increased in parallel with the time of exposure (years of smoking) p = 0.07), HPV-DNA of the oncogenic types was detected in 43 (56%) women, the risk of being HPV DNA-positive was significantly higher in CIN 2 and 3 as compared with CIN 1 (p = 0.037). Importantly, the prevalence of high-risk HPV types was significantly higher in cigarette smokers than in non-smokers (p = 0.046). Conclusions. The results indicate that the severity of CIN lesions was clearly related to two fundamental risk factors: 1) high-risk HPV types, and 2) current cigarette smoking. These two risk factors were closely interrelated in that the high-risk HPV types were significantly more frequent in current smokers than in non-smokers, suggesting the possibility of a synergistic action between these two risk factors in cervical carcinogenesis.

In dieser Arbeit wurden erstmalig orts- und energieaufgelöste Untersuchungen der ferroelektrischen Elektronenemission (FEE) durchgeführt. Als Modellsystem diente Triglyzinsulfat (TGS). Als spektromikroskopische Methode kam die Emissions-Elektronenmikroskopie zum Einsatz. Typische Schaltfelder betrugen 2 kV/mm, angelegt wurde eine sinusoïdale Wechselspannung mit 300 Hz. Die Temperatur, bei der die FEE verschwindet (32°C), liegt unterhalb der Curie-Temperatur des TGS (TC=49°C). Dieser Unterschied kann auf den Einfluss des Extraktionsfeldes des Emissions-Elektronenmikroskops (1 kV/mm) zurückgeführt werden. Oberhalb der Curie-Temperatur konnte keine Emission beobachtet werden. Die Elektroden vor und nach der Messung waren identisch, d.h. nicht zerstört, wie man es erwarten würde, wenn ein Oberflächenplasma gezündet wurde. Bei ca. 150 V/mm beginnt die Intensität der beobachteten Emission Schwankungen aufzuweisen. Dies könnte die Ursache in dem Einsatz von ersten Zündungen eines Mikroplasmas mit destruktiver Wirkung haben. Die ortsintegrierte Energieverteilung weist bei Spannungsamplituden bis 300 V zwei Maxima auf. Dies deutet auf zwei Emissionsmechanismen hin, einen sekundären (ca. 10 eV) und einen primären (ca. 13 bis 45 eV) Effekt. Die Hochenergie-Abschneidekanten korrelieren im Bereich bis 200 V bis auf wenige eV mit der angelegten Spannungsamplitude. Die Messung der ortsaufgelösten Energieverteilung zeigt, dass die primäre Emission aus den Bereichen ohne Elektrode stammt. Sie wird der FEE zugeschrieben. Diese Elektronen können– auf Grund der lokalen Felder – auf die Elektroden beschleunigt werden und hier sekundäre Prozesse auslösen (niederenergetischer Bereich des Spektrums). Dies wird durch die lokalen Spektren dieser Bereiche bestätigt.

We performed a pooled analysis of three trials comparing titanium-nitride-oxide-coated bioactive stents (BAS) with paclitaxel-eluting stents (PES) in 1,774 patients. All patients were followed for 12 months. The primary outcomes of interest were recurrent myocardial infarction (MI), death and target lesion revascularization (TLR). Secondary endpoints were stent thrombosis (ST) and major adverse cardiac events (MACE) including MI, death and TLR. There were 922 patients in the BAS group and 852 in the PES group. BAS significantly reduced the risk of recurrent MI (2.7% vs. 5.6%; risk ratio 0.50, 95% CI 0.31-0.81; p = 0.004) and MACE (8.9% vs. 12.6%; risk ratio 0.71, 95% CI 0.54-0.94; p = 0.02) during the 12 months of follow up. In contrast, the differences between BAS and PES were not statistically significant with respect to TLR (risk ratio 0.98, 95% CI 0.68-1.41), death (risk ratio 0.96, 95% CI 0.61-1.51) and definite ST (risk ratio 0.28, 95% CI 0.05-1.47). In conclusion, the results of this analysis suggest that BAS is effective in reducing TLR and improves clinical outcomes by reducing MI and MACE compared with PES.
