An algorithm has been developed for a Public Access Defibrillator which utilizes distinctive features from the impedance cardiogram (ICG) recorded via defibrillator pads to advise both lay users and minimally trained bystanders to ensure CPR effectiveness. Following ethical approval, data were collected and marked. CPR was administered by trained personnel. 211 cases were gathered and the training set included 106 cases. A retrospective analysis was carried out of simultaneously recorded ECG and ICG. The speed of compressions was calculated by counting the outstanding waves in the ICG during CPR. Also if the base-to-peak amplitude of the ICG is greater than a minimum threshold, the corresponding compressions were classified as being applied with adequate force. For the validation set, adequate speed was detected with 91.45% sensitivity and 96.27% specificity (79826s) and adequate force with 99.94% sensitivity and 97.91% specificity (91973s). © 2011 CCAL.

We have developed the capability to determine accurate harmonic spectra for multielectron atoms within time-dependent R-matrix (TDRM) theory. Harmonic spectra can be calculated using the expectation value of the dipole length, velocity, or acceleration operator. We assess the calculation of the harmonic spectrum from He irradiated by 390-nm laser light with intensities up to 4 x 10(14) W cm(-2) using each form, including the influence of the multielectron basis used in the TDRM code. The spectra are consistent between the different forms, although the dipole acceleration calculation breaks down at lower harmonics. The results obtained from TDRM theory are compared with results from the HELIUM code, finding good quantitative agreement between the methods. We find that bases which include pseudostates give the best comparison with the HELIUM code, but models comprising only physical orbitals also produce accurate results.

Experimental assessments of the modified power-combining Class-E amplifier are described. The technique used to combine the output of individual power amplifiers (PAs) into an unbalanced load without the need for bulky transformers permits the use of small RF chokes useful for the deployment in the EER transmitter. The modified output load network of the PA results in excellent 50 dBc and 46 dBc second and third-harmonic suppressions, dispensing the need for additional lossy filtering block. Operating from a 3.2 V dc supply voltage, the PA exhibits 64% drain efficiency at 24 dBm output power. Over a wide bandwidth of 350 MHz, drain efficiency of better than 60% at output power higher than 22 dBm were achieved. © 2010 IEICE Institute of Electronics Informati.

Analysis and synthesis of the new Class-EF power amplifier (PA) are presented in this paper. The proposed circuit offers means to alleviate some of the major issues faced by existing Class-EF and Class-EF PAs, such as (1) substantial power losses due to parasitic resistance of the large inductor in the Class-EF load network, (2) unpredictable behaviour of practical lumped inductors and capacitors at harmonic frequencies, and (3) deviation from ideal Class-EF operation mode due to detrimental effects of device output inductance at high frequencies. The transmission-line load network of the Class-EF PA topology elaborated in this paper simultaneously satisfies the Class-EF optimum impedance requirements at fundamental frequency, second, and third harmonics as well as simultaneously providing matching to the circuit optimum load resistance for any prescribed system load resistance. Furthermore, an elegant solution using an open and short-circuit stub arrangement is suggested to overcome the problem encountered in the mm-wave IC realizations of the Class-EF PA load network due to lossy quarter-wave line. © 2010 IEICE Institute of Electronics Informati.

We apply time-dependent R-matrix theory to investigate harmonic generation from ground-state Ar+ with M = 0 at a wavelength of 390 nm. Contributions associated with the different 3s(2)3p(4) ionization thresholds are assessed, including the interference between these. The dominant contribution originates from the second ionization threshold, 3s(2)3p(4 1)D. Changes to the harmonic yields arising from the higher 3s3p(5) thresholds are also assessed. We further confirm that Ar+ has a higher harmonic yield than He for the same laser pulse, despite having a higher ionization threshold.

Nonlinear optics is an essential component of modern laser systems and optoelectronic devices. It has also emerged as an important tool in probing the electronic, vibrational, magnetic, and crystallographic structure of materials ranging from oxides and metals, to polymers and biological samples. This review focuses on the specific technique of optical second harmonic generation (SHG), and its application in probing ferroelectric complex oxide crystals and thin films. As the dominant SHG interaction mechanism exists only in materials that lack inversion symmetry, SHG is a sensitive probe of broken inversion symmetry, and thus also of bulk polar phenomena in materials. By performing in-situ SHG polarimetry experiments in different experimental conditions such as sample orientation, applied electric field, and temperature, one can probe ferroelectric hysteresis loops and phase transitions. Careful modeling of the polarimetry data allows for the determination of the point group symmetry of the crystal. In epitaxial thin films with a two-dimensional arrangement of well-defined domain orientations, one can extract information about intrinsic material properties such as nonlinear coefficients, as well as microstructural information such as the local statistics of the different domain variants being probed. This review presents several detailed examples of ferroelectric systems where such measurements and modeling are performed. The use of SHG microscopic imaging is discussed, and its ability to reveal domain structures and phases not normally visible with linear optics is illustrated.

The general properties of a frequency selective surface loaded with negative impedance converter (NIC)-based active loads are discussed from a theoretical perspective. The stability problem associated with NIC circuits embedded in artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) and AMC absorber applications is studied using pole-zero analysis. The requirements and constraints for achieving stable operation with enhanced bandwidth using negative capacitance as realized by a floating NIC network are derived. Furthermore, it is shown that it is nearly impossible to simultaneously implement a negative capacitor and a negative inductor to such structures. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We investigate harmonic generation (HG) from ground-state Ar+ aligned with M=1 at a laser wavelength of 390 nm and intensity of 4×1014Wcm−2. Using time-dependent R-matrix theory, we find that an initial state with magnetic quantum number M=1 provides a fourfold increase in harmonic yield over M=0. HG arises primarily from channels associated with the 3Pe threshold of Ar2+, in contrast with M=0 for which channels associated with the excited, 1De threshold dominate HG. Multichannel and multielectron interferences lead to a more marked suppression of HG for M=1 than M=0.

We address the estimation of purity for a quantum oscillator initially prepared in a displaced thermal state and probed by a suitably prepared qubit interacting with the oscillator via Jaynes-Cummings Hamiltonian without the rotating-wave approximation. We evaluate the quantum Fisher information (QFI) and show that optimal estimation of purity can be achieved by measuring the population of the qubit after a properly chosen interaction time. We also address the estimation of purity at fixed total energy and show that the corresponding precision is independent of the presence of a coherent amplitude.

We use the theory of quantum estimation in two different qubit-boson coupling models to demonstrate that the temperature of a quantum harmonic oscillator can be estimated with high precision by quantum-limited measurements on the qubit. The two models that we address embody situations of current physical interest due to their connection with ongoing experimental efforts on the control of mesoscopic dynamics. We show that population measurements performed over the qubit probe are near optimal for a broad range of temperatures of the harmonic oscillator.
