In the years of reconstruction and economic boom that followed the Second World War, the domestic sphere encountered new expectations regarding social behaviour, modes of living, and forms of dwelling. This book brings together an international group of scholars from architecture, design, urban planning, and interior design to reappraise mid-twentieth century modern life, offering a timely reassessment of culture and the economic and political effects on civilian life. This collection contains essays that examine the material of art, objects, and spaces in the context of practices of dwelling over the long span of the postwar period. This edited volume contains 18 chapters by 40 contributors from many parts the world, and is divided into four thematic sections. The focus of Part 1 is Destination image, and contains five chapters. This has arguably been the most popular topic in the destination marketing literature, underpinned by the knowledge that the image an individual holds of a destination is as important as any tangible features. Yin Chew and Siti Johari attempt to model the relationship between destination image and country image using structural equation modelling. While this does address an important gap in the literature, the measures used to operationalise the constructs are not reported and little of the data analysis is discussed to support the finding that country image is a predictor of destination image. Ana Rodriquez, Antonia Correia and Metin Kozak report the findings of an exploratory study about lakedestination image. They used a neural network content analysis of 40 lake descriptions featuring on an online directory for lake enthusiasts to derive a set of cognitive attribute themes. Yang Zhang and Yi-Wei Xiao explore the relations between literary works and tourism through the Asian voice. Coptotermes Wasmann (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae) is one of the most economically important subterranean termite genera and some species are successful invaders. However, despite its important pest status, the taxonomic validity of many named Coptotermes species remains unclear. In this study, we reviewed all named species within the genus and investigated evidence supporting the validity of each named species. Species were systematically scrutinized according to the region of their original description: Southeast Asia, India, China, Africa, the Neotropics, and Australia. We estimate that of the currently 69 named species described by accepted nomenclatural rules, only 21 taxa have solid evidence for validity, 44 names have uncertain status, and the remaining species names should be synonymized or were made unavailable. Species with high degrees of invasiveness may be known under additional junior synonyms due to independent parochial descriptions. Molecular data for a vast majority of species are scarce and significant effort is needed to complete the taxonomic and phylogenetic revision of the genus. Because of the wide distribution of Coptotermes, we advocate for an integrative taxonomic effort to establish the distribution of each putative species, provide specimens and corresponding molecular data, check original descriptions and type specimens (if available), and provide evidence for a more robust phylogenetic position of each species. This study embodies both consensus and contention of those studying Coptotermes and thus pinpoints the current uncertainty of many species. This project is intended to be a roadmap for identifying those Coptotermes species names that need to be more thoroughly investigated, as an incentive to complete a necessary revision process.

The pH and salinity balance mechanisms of crayfish are controlled by a set of transport-related genes. We identified a set of the genes from the gill transcriptome from a freshwater crayfish Cherax quadricarinatus using the Illumina NGS-sequencing technology. We identified and characterized carbonic anhydrase (CA) genes and some other key genes involved in systematic acid-base balance and osmotic/ionic regulation. We also examined expression patterns of some of these genes across different sublethal pH levels [1]. A total of 72,382,710 paired-end Illumina reads were assembled into 36,128 contigs with an average length of 800 bp. About 37% of the contigs received significant BLAST hits and 22% were assigned gene ontology terms. These data will assist in further physiological-genomic studies in crayfish.

The accidental discovery of a cell with haploid number of diplochromosomes in squashes of colchicine-treated root tips led to a search for haploid anaphases in treated roots allowed to recover in water. No haploid anaphases were seen. Apart from the divisional stages of diploid and tetraploid nuclei, cells with two pro-, meta- and ana-phases were observed. The formation of distinct cell boundaries by each nucleus of an originally multinucleate cell indicates their potentialities in this direction.

The behaviour of the nucleoli from mitotic prophase till the end of telophase is illustrated. Since at prophase, the SAT-threads appear embedded in the nucleolar matrix, their orientation in the mass and the rate of dissolution of the latter would determine whether this relationship would continue till meta- or ana-phase. The persistence of the nucleoli-SAT association often till anaphase indicates that the movement of such nucleoli on the spindle is governed by that of the SAT-chromosomes.

Autoimmune diseases are more common in dogs than in humans and are already threatening the future of some highly predisposed dog breeds. Susceptibility to autoimmune diseases is controlled by environmental and genetic factors, especially the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) gene region. Dogs show a similar physiology, disease presentation and clinical response as humans, making them an excellent disease model for autoimmune diseases common to both species. The genetic background of canine autoimmune disorders is largely unknown, but recent annotation of the dog genome and subsequent development of new genomic tools offer a unique opportunity to map novel autoimmune genes in various breeds. Many autoimmune disorders show breed-specific enrichment, supporting a strong genetic background. Furthermore, the presence of hundreds of breeds as genetic isolates facilitates gene mapping in complex autoimmune disorders. Identification of novel predisposing genes establishes breeds as models and may reveal novel candidate genes for the corresponding human disorders. Genetic studies will eventually shed light on common biological functions and interactions between genes and the environment. This study aimed to identify genetic risk factors in various autoimmune disorders, including systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)-related diseases, comprising immune-mediated rheumatic disease (IMRD) and steroid-responsive meningitis arteritis (SMRA) as well as Addison s disease (AD) in Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers (NSDTRs) and chronic superficial keratitis (CSK) in German Shepherd dogs (GSDs). We used two different approaches to identify genetic risk factors. Firstly, a candidate gene approach was applied to test the potential association of MHC class II, also known as a dog leukocyte antigen (DLA) in canine species. Secondly, a genome-wide association study (GWAS) was performed to identify novel risk loci for SLE-related disease and AD in NSDTRs. We identified DLA risk haplotypes for an IMRD subphenotype of SLE-related disease, AD and CSK, but not in SMRA, and show that the MHC class II gene region is a major genetic risk factor in canine autoimmune diseases. An elevated risk was found for IMRD in dogs that carried the DLA-DRB1*00601/DQA1*005011/DQB1*02001 haplotype (OR = 2.0, 99% CI = 1.03-3.95, p = 0.01) and for ANA-positive IMRD dogs (OR = 2.3, 99% CI = 1.07-5.04, p-value 0.007). We also found that DLA-DRB1*01502/DQA*00601/DQB1*02301 haplotype was significantly associated with AD in NSDTRs (OR = 2.1, CI = 1.0-4.4, P = 0.044) and the DLA-DRB1*01501/DQA1*00601/DQB1*00301 haplotype with the CSK in GSDs (OR=2.67, CI=1.17-6.44, p= 0.02). In addition, we found that homozygosity for the risk haplotype increases the risk for each disease phenotype and that an overall homozygosity for the DLA region predisposes to CSK and AD. Our results have enabled the development of genetic tests to improve breeding practices by avoiding the production of puppies homozygous for risk haplotypes. We also performed the first successful GWAS for a complex disease in dogs. With less than 100 cases and 100 controls, we identified five risk loci for SLE-related disease and AD and found strong candidate genes involved in a novel T-cell activation pathway. We show that an inbred dog population has fewer risk factors, but each of them has a stronger genetic risk. Ongoing studies aim to identify the causative mutations and bring new knowledge to help diagnostics, treatment and understanding of the aetiology of SLE-related diseases.

The transmission electron microscopy images of in situ prepared multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs)and polyaniline (PANI) composites show that nanotubes are well dispersed in aqueous medium, and the nanofibers of PANI facilitate intertube transport. Although low temperature transport indicates variable range hopping (VRH) mechanism, the dc and ac conductivity become temperature independent as the MWNT content increases. The onset frequency for the increase in conductivity is observed to be strongly dependent on the MWNT weight percent, and the ac conductivity can be scaled onto a master curve. The negative magnetoresistance is attributed to the forward interference scattering mechanism in VRH transport. (C) 2010 American.

Tutkin rakenne- eli järjestelmäanalyyttiseksi lainopiksi kutsumallani metodilla poliisiesimiehen käskyvaltaa hallin-to- ja rikosoikeuden muodostamassa kokonaisuudessa käyttäen vertailupintana oikeuskäytäntöä ja oikeusvertai-lua. Hallinto-oikeus luo perustan, jota vasten esimiehen käskyvallan ulottuvuuksia tarkastelen. Siihen kuuluvat poliisiorganisaation hierarkkinen rakenne ja käskynalaisuussuhteet sekä hallinnon lainalaisuus ja poliisin toimi-valta. Toimivaltaa käsitellään laajassa (tehtäväpiiri) ja suppeassa (toimivaltanormit) merkityksessä. Esimiehen käskyvaltaa voi pitää sekä organisatorisena että hallinnollisena toimivaltana. Se määrittää lähtökohtaisesti polii-sihallinnon sisäistä työnjakoa, mutta sen merkitys on usein ratkaiseva poliisin puuttuessa yksityishenkilön pe-rusoikeuksiin. Perusoikeuksiin liittyy osaltaan myös lainsäädännöllinen näkökulma, koska tällaiset toimivaltuudet tulisi säätää riittävän täsmällisesti ja tarkka-rajaisesti lakitasolla. Nykyään poliisimiehen käskyvallasta säädetään poliisiasetuksen 7 §:ssä, jonka mukaan poliisimiehen on noudatettava esimiehen toimivaltansa rajoissa antamia käskyjä, määräyksiä ja ohjeita. Meneillään oleva poliisilain kokonaisuudistus tuo oman näkökulman lainvalmiste-luun, jonka vuoksi esitän työssä myös sääntelyehdotuksen ja oikeustieteellisen kuvauksen keskustelun pohjaksi. Hallinto-oikeuden ja rikosoikeuden rajamaille sijoittuu kysymys esimiehen määräämän poliisitaktiikan ja oikeut-tamisperusteiden välisestä suhteesta. Nykyisin esimerkiksi hätävarjelun ei yleensä katsottane kuuluvan poliisilain 1 §:ssä säädetyn poliisin tehtävän suorittamiseen, mikä tarkoittaa virkatehtävän suppeaa määrittelyä. Kuitenkin tosiasiallisesti poliisin tärkeimpiä tehtäviä on hengen ja terveyden suojaaminen, mikä koskee niin poliisitoiminnan johtamista kuin varsinaista hätävarjelutekoakin. Tutkielmassa onkin otettu kantaa poliisitaktiikan ja hätävarjelun välisen vuorovaikutuksen systematisoimiseksi. Johtamisessa tarvittavien käskyjen, määräysten ja ohjeiden oikeudellinen merkitys ei ole täysin selvä, mikä saattaa pahimmillaan haitata poliisitoiminnallisen tilanteen hoitamista sekä jälkikäteisen oikeudellisen vastuun oikeudenmukaista jakautumista. Poliisitaktiikan ja tosi-asiallisen voimankäytön välinen ero näkyy sekä kotimaisissa oikeustapauksissa että Euroopan ihmisoikeustuo-mioistuimen tuomioissa, jotka jakautuvat tilanteen suunnittelun ja valvonnan sekä aseenkäytön arviointiin. Rikoslain kokonaisuudistuksessa säädettiin anteeksiantoperuste sotilasesimiehen käskyyn perustuen. Samalla hallituksen esityksessä sivuttiin muun virkakäskyn merkitystä erilaisissa organisaatioissa. Sotilasesimiehen käs-kyvalta ei ole analogisesti suoraan sovellettavissa poliisiorganisaatioon. Kuitenkin punninta, joka liittyy sotilas-esimiehen käskyvaltaan, on samankaltaista myös muissa hierarkkisissa organisaatioissa. Esitöissä on esitetty poliisiorganisaatioon liittyen kaksi vaihtoehtoa. Ensinnäkin on mahdollista säätää erehdysoppiin ja osittain ana-logisesti sotilasesimiehen käskyvaltasäännökseen perustuva malli. Toisaalta poliisiesimiehen käskyvaltaa voi pitää pääosin hallinto-oikeudellisin keinoin ratkeavana ongelmana, jolloin rikoslakiin ei ole tarvetta lisätä erillistä anteeksiantoperustetta vaan arviointi tehdään rikoslain yleisten oppien kautta. Tällöin tulisi säätää poliisiesimiehen käskyvallasta ja siihen liittyvistä velvoitteista poliisilaissa. Työssä on pyritty arvioimaan myös eri oikeuskulttuurien välisiä eroja. Tämän vertailun kohteina on Saksan ja Ruotsin oikeusjärjestys ja oikeustiede.

The regular associated solution model for binary systems has been modified by incorporating the size of the complex as an explicit variable. The thermodynamic properties of the liquid alloy and the interactions between theA ?B type of complex and the unassociated atoms in anA-B binary have been evaluated as a function of relative size of the complex using the activity coefficients at infinite dilution and activity data at one other composition in the binary. The computational procedure adopted for determining the concentration of clusters and interaction energies in the associated liquid is similar to that proposed by Lele and Rao. The analysis has been applied to the thermodynamic mixing functions of liquid Al-Ca alloys believed to contain Al2Ca associates. It is found that the size of the cluster significantly affects the interaction energies between the complex and the unassociated atoms, while the equilibrium constant and enthalpy change for the association reaction exhibit only minor variation, when the equations are fitted to experimental data. The interaction energy between unassociated free atoms remains virtually unaltered as the size of the complex is varied between extreme values. Accurate data on free energy, enthalpy, and volume of mixing at the same temperature on alloy systems with compound forming tendency would permit a rigorous test of the proposed model.

Biological invasions affect biodiversity worldwide, and, consequently, the invaded ecosystems may suffer from significant losses in economic and cultural values. Impatiens glandulifera Royle (Balsaminaceae) is an invasive annual herb, native to the western Himalayas and introduced into Europe in the 19th century as a garden ornamental plant. The massive invasion of I. glandulifera is due to its high reproductive output, rapid growth and its ability to outcompete native species. In Finland, the first observations regarding the presence of I. glandulifera date from the year 1947, and today it is considered a serious problem in riparian habitats. The aim of this master’s thesis research is to reveal the population genetic structure of I. glandulifera in Finland and to find out whether there have been one or multiple invasions in Finland. The study focuses on investigating the origin of I. glandulifera in Southern Finland, by comparing plant samples from the Helsinki region with those from its native region and other regions of invasion. Samples from four populations in Helsinki and from the United Kingdom, Canada, India and Pakistan were collected and genotyped using 11 microsatellite markers. The genetic analyses were evaluated using the programs Arlequin and Structure. The results of the genetic analyses suggested that I. glandulifera has been introduced to Finland more than once. Multiple introductions are supported by the higher level of genetic diversity detected within and among Finnish populations than would be expected for a single introduction. Results of the Bayesian Structure analysis divided the four Finnish populations into four clusters. This geographical structure was further supported by pairwise Fst values among populations. The causes and potential consequences of such multiple introductions of I. glandulifera in Finland and further perspectives are discussed.
