Currently, vehicles are often equipped with active safety systems to reduce the risk of accidents, most of which occur in urban environments. The most prominent include Antilock Braking Systems (ABS), Traction Control and Stability Control. All these systems use different kinds of sensors to constantly monitor the conditions of the vehicle, and act in an emergency. In this paper the use of ultrasonic sensors in active safety systems for urban traffic is proposed, and the advantages and disadvantages when compared to other sensors are discussed. Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) for urban traffic based on ultrasounds is presented as an application example. The proposed system has been implemented in a fully-automated prototype vehicle and has been tested under real traffic conditions. The results confirm the good performance of ultrasonic sensors in these systems. ©2011 by the authors.

Abstract. The ASSERT project de?ned new software engineering methods and tools for the development of critical embedded real-time systems in the space domain. The ASSERT model-driven engineering process was one of the achievements of the project and is based on the concept of property- preserving model transformations. The key element of this process is that non-functional properties of the software system must be preserved during model transformations. Properties preservation is carried out through model transformations compliant with the Ravenscar Pro?le and provides a formal basis to the process. In this way, the so-called Ravenscar Computational Model is central to the whole ASSERT process. This paper describes the work done in the HWSWCO study, whose main objective has been to address the integration of the Hardware/Software co-design phase in the ASSERT process. In order to do that, non-functional properties of the software system must also be preserved during hardware synthesis. ABSTRACT. Throughout this project, it will be analyzed the beginning of the radio in the first decades of the XX century, having as goal to describe the scientific-technological development and the political-militaries opponents of the European’s countries, United kingdom and Germany. Firstly, it will be shown the radio’s precursors before the origin of the wireless telegraphy, like: optical telegraphy, electric telegraphy or telephone. Moreover, it will show the first researchers like: Clerk Maxwell or Heinrich Hertz, thanks to them, the origin of the radio was possible. In addition, it will analyze the historical-political context of United Kingdom and Germany, where it is shown the main features of the Britain Empire and the German Empire. Moreover, the importance of the telegraphy without wire will make necessary and international organization, resulting the International Conferences of Wireless Telegraphy and it will put together these main countries in order to protect their interests. Guglielmo Marconi, by United Kingdom, and Telefunken, by Germany, they will be the main commercials brand of the wireless telegraphy, not only in their countries, but also in all over the world. Between both companies will be seen the main competitions for their patens, the technology development and the market’s control. Moreover, it will be dealt the direct conflict in the First World of War, where the radio has a fundamental role. Finally, it will be analyze the beginning of the wireless broadcasting in the second decade of the XX century, where the radio was established as one of the most important media of the age, able to arrive at every places of the world and it was perfectly integrated in the society of that moment.

This Master's Thesis Project involves creating a software able to monitor and manage the activity of Hydra, a tool for managing distributed environments, in order to adjust its load balancing strategy to the model created by GloBeM, an analysis methodology for distributed environments. GloBeM, which is an external methodology, can analyse and create a finite-state machine model from a particular cloud system. Hydra, also an external tool, is an open source management system for cloud environments recently developed, with a relatively limited system of load balancing. The created software gets the model created by GloBeM as an input and analyses it. From there, it monitors in real time and at a certain frequency Hydra’s activity and the cloud system that it manages, and reconfigures its parameters to adjust its performance to the stipulations by the GloBeM’s model, extending Hydra's original load balancing system.

The effects of Escherichia coli heat-stable enterotoxin (ST) and uroguanylin were examined on the proliferation of T84 and Caco2 human colon carcinoma cells that express guanylyl cyclase C (GC-C) and SW480 human colon carcinoma cells that do not express this receptor. ST or uroguanylin inhibited proliferation of T84 and Caco2 cells, but not SW480 cells, in a concentration-dependent fashion, assessed by quantifying cell number, cell protein, and [3H]thymidine incorporation into DNA. These agonists did not inhibit proliferation by induction of apoptosis, assessed by TUNEL (terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dNTP-biotin nick end labeling of DNA fragments) assay and DNA laddering, or necrosis, assessed by trypan blue exclusion and lactate dehydrogenase release. Rather, ST prolonged the cell cycle, assessed by flow cytometry and [3H]thymidine incorporation into DNA. The cytostatic effects of GC-C agonists were associated with accumulation of intracellular cGMP, mimicked by the cell-permeant analog 8-Br-cGMP, and reproduced and potentiated by the cGMP-specific phosphodiesterase inhibitor zaprinast but not the inactive ST analog TJU 1-103. Thus, GC-C agonists regulate the proliferation of intestinal cells through cGMP-dependent mechanisms by delaying progression of the cell cycle. These data suggest that endogenous agonists of GC-C, such as uroguanylin, may play a role in regulating the balance between epithelial proliferation and differentiation in normal intestinal physiology. Therefore, GC-C ligands may be novel therapeutic agents for the treatment of patients with colorectal cancer.

Helicobacter pylori is an important etiologic agent of gastroduodenal disease. In common with other organisms, H. pylori bacteria express heat shock proteins that share homologies with the GroES-GroEL class of proteins from Escherichia coli. We have assessed the heat shock proteins of H. pylori as potential protective antigens in a murine model of gastric Helicobacter infection. Orogastric immunization of mice with recombinant H. pylori GroES- and GroEL-like proteins protected 80% (n = 20) and 70% (n = 10) of animals, respectively, from a challenge dose of 10(4) Helicobacter felis bacteria (compared to control mice, P = 0.0042 and P = 0.0904, respectively). All mice (n = 19) that were immunized with a dual antigen preparation, consisting of H. pylori GroES-like protein and the B subunit of H. pylori urease, were protected against infection. This represented a level of protection equivalent to that provided by a sonicated Helicobacter extract (P = 0.955). Antibodies directed against the recombinant H. pylori antigens were predominantly of the IgG1 class, suggesting that a type 2 T-helper cell response was involved in protection. This work reports a protein belonging to the GroES class of heat shock proteins that was shown to induce protective immunity. In conclusion, GroES-like and urease B-subunit proteins have been identified as potential components of a future H. pylori subunit vaccine.

Post T Tauri stars (PTTS) are late-type stars in the age range between 10 and 100 Myr filling the gap between T Tauri (TTs) and zero-age: main sequence phases. This period of evolution remains ambiguous and until now different studies of young stars have failed to find the numbers of PTTS that are expected. In the last years, some PTTS have been identified among the X-ray detected pre-main sequence stars in some star-forming regions. More recently, additional PTTS have been identified in young associations and moving groups (β Pic, TW Hya, Tucana/Horologium, and the AB Dor). However, many isolated PTTS still remain undiscovered. In this contribution, we compiled the PTTS previously identified in the literature, and identified new candidates using the information provided by the high resolution spectra obtained during our surveys of late-type stars possible members to young moving groups, FGK stars in the solar neighborhood, and RasTyc sample. To identify PTTS we applied an age-oriented definition using relative age indicators (Li abundance, chromospheric and coronal emission and the kinematics) as well as color-magnitude diagrams and pre-main sequence isochrones.

A reduced set of measurement geometries allows the spectral reflectance of special effect coatings to be predicted for any other geometry. A physical model based on flake-related parameters has been used to determine nonredundant measurement geometries for the complete description of the spectral bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF). The analysis of experimental spectral BRDF was carried out by means of principal component analysis. From this analysis, a set of nine measurement geometries was proposed to characterize special effect coatings. It was shown that, for two different special effect coatings, these geometries provide a good prediction of their complete color shift.
