This paper critically appraises the limitations of the liquid-limit water content of clayey soils determined conventionally either by percussion cup or by the cone penetration method. It is shown that the conventional liquid limit and plastic limit are arbitrary, strength-based water contents and that they cannot represent the plasticity limits, and that the state of the soil-water system at the conventional liquid limit does not correspond to a stress-free reference state. The present investigation identifies three characteristic limiting water contents for a soil-water system which have well-defined, unique mechanisms controlling them, namely the free swell limit, settling limit and shrinkage limit. Simple procedures for the determination of the free swell limit and settling limit of natural soils are presented. The settling limit is shown to be the 'real liquid limit' of any clayey soil. With a number of experimental illustrations, it is clearly shown that the settling limit represents the maximum water-holding capacity of clayey soils and that it corresponds to the stress-free reference state.

Standard Proctor compaction test data were generated for 3 soils with liquid limit water contents ranging from 48% to 84%. It has been established that by defining a soil by its liquid limit and coarse fraction, the path of compaction for a specific compactive effort can be predicted via a simple density-water content-liquid limit relationship. Ca-doped manganite La1-xCaxMnO3 samples with x=0.2 and 0.4 were investigated by extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) as a function of temperature and preparation method. The samples exhibit characteristic resistivity change across the metal-insulator (MI) transition temperature whose shape and position depend on Ca-doping concentration and sample thermal treatment. EXAFS results evidenced an increase of nonthermal disorder at the MI transition temperature which is significantly correlated with the resistivity behavior.

Fine particle and large surface area Cu/CeO2 catalysts of crystallite sizes in the range of 100-200 Angstrom synthesized by the solution combustion method have been investigated for NO reduction. Five percent Cu/CeO2 catalyst shows nearly 100% conversion of NO by NH3 below 300 degrees C, whereas pure ceria and Zr, Y, and Ca doped ceria show 85-95% NO conversion above 600 degrees C. Similarly NO reduction by CO has been observed over 5% Cu/CeO2 with nearly 100% conversion below 300 degrees C. Hydrocarbon (n-butane) oxidation by NO to CO2, N-2, and H2O has also been demonstrated over this catalyst below 350 degrees C making Cu/CeO2 a new NO reduction catalyst in the low temperature window of 150-350 degrees C. Kinetics of NO reduction over 5% Cu/CeO2 have also been investigated. The rate constants are in the range of 1.4 x 10(4) to 2.3 x 10(4) cm(3) g(-1) s(-1) between 170 and 300 degrees C. Cu/CeO2 catalysts are characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy where Cu2+ ions are shown to be dispersed on the CeO2 surface. Fine particle strontium substituted lanthanum ferrites La1-xSrxFeO3, where x = 0.0-1.0, have been synthesized by the solution combustion method using corresponding metal nitrates, oxalyl dihydrazide (ODH) or tetra formal tris azine (TFTA). Formation of La1-xSrxFeO3 was confirmed by the XRD and the fine particle nature of the ferrites investigated using SEM, particle size analysis and BET surface area measurements. La1-xSrxFeO3 (up to x = 0-0.4) exhibited low resistivity near the Neel temperatures. La1-xSrxFeO3 with x greater than or equal to 0.8 when used as bifunctional electrodes, showed oxygen evolution and reduction activity comparable with the orthoferrites prepared by the conventional solid state method. Fine particles of willemite, alpha -Zn2SiO4, were prepared by both solution combustion and sol-gel methods. Both processes yield single-phase, large-surface area (26- and 78-m(2)/g), sinteractive willemite powders. Thermal evolution of crystalline phases was studied using X-ray powder diffraction patterns. The combustion method favors low-temperature formation of willemite compared to the sol-gel method. The powders, when uniaxially pressed and sintered at 1300 degreesC, achieved 78-80% theoretical density. The microstructures of the sintered body show the presence of equiaxed 0.5- to 4-mum grains. Blue pigments of willemite doped with Co2+ and Ni2+ were also prepared by the combustion process.

Nanocrystalline ZnO:Mn (0.1 mol%) phosphors have been successfully prepared by self propagating, gas producing solution combustion method. The powder X-ray diffraction of as-formed ZnO:Mn sample shows, hexagonal wurtzite phase with particle size of similar to 40 nm. For Mn doped ZnO, the lattice parameters and volume of unit cell (a=3.23065 angstrom, c=5.27563 angstrom and V=47.684 (angstrom)(3)) are found to be greater than that of undoped ZnO (a=3.19993 angstrom, c=5.22546 angstrom and V=46.336 (angstrom)(3)). The SEM micrographs reveal that besides the spherical crystals, the powders also contained several voids and pores. The TEM photograph also shows the particles are approximately spherical in nature. The FTIR spectrum shows two peaks at similar to 3428 and 1598 cm(-1) which are attributed to O-H stretching and H-O-H bending vibration. The PL spectra of ZnO:Mn indicate a strong green emission peak at 526 nm and a weak red emission at 636 nm corresponding to T-4(1) -> (6)A(1) transition of Mn2+ ions. The EPR spectrum exhibits fine structure transition which will be split into six hyperfine components due to Mn-55 hyperfine coupling giving rise to all 30 allowed transitions. From EPR spectra the spin-Hamiltonian parameters have been evaluated and discussed. The magnitude of the hyperfine splitting (A) constant indicates that there exists a moderately covalent bonding between the Mn2+ ions and the surrounding ligands. The number of spins participating in resonance (N), its paramagnetic susceptibility (chi) have been evaluated. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A series of new dicationic dihydrogen complexes of ruthenium of the type cis-[(dppm)(2)Ru(eta(2)-H-2)(L)][BF4](2) (dppm = Ph2PCH2PPh2; L = phosphite) have been prepared by protonating the precursor hydride complexes cis-[(dPPM)(2)Ru(H)(L)][BF4] using HBF4.Et2O. The precursor hydride complexes have been obtained from trans-[(dppm)(2)Ru(H)(L)][BF4][(L = phospfiite) via a rare acid-catalysed isomerization reaction in six coordinate species. The trans-[(dppm)(2)Ru(H)(L)][BF4] complexes (L = phosphine) upon protonation gave the isomerized derivatives, however, further addition of acid resulted in a five-coordinate species, [(dppm)(2)RuCl](+) presumably via an intermediate phosphine dihydrogen complex. The electronic as well as the steric properties of the co-ligands seem to strongly influence the structure-reactivity behaviour of this series of complexes.

The utility of tetrathiomolybdate in a variety of organic transformations is presented in this account. The sulfur transfer ability of tetrathiomolybdate is exploited in the synthesis of organic disulfides under mild reaction conditions. The induced internal redox reactions associated with tetrathiomolybdate have been thoroughly exploited in developing various methodologies, which include the reduction of organic azides, synthesis of diselenides, cyclic imines, thioamides, and thiolactams. In addition, novel deprotection strategies using tetrathiomolybdate have been developed to cleave the propargyl and propargyloxy carbonyl (POC) protecting groups. Tetrathiomolybdate mediated tandem sulfur transfer-reduction-Michael reactions have been applied to the synthesis of sulfur containing bicyclic systems. Furthermore, the reactions in the solid state and the reactions in water medium assisted by tetrathiomolybdate have greatly simplified the synthesis of organic disulfides.

Pd/CeO2 (1 at. %) prepared by the solution-combustion method shows a higher catalytic activity for CO oxidation and NO reduction than Pd metal, PdO, and Pd dispersed over CeO2 by the conventional method. To understand the higher catalytic properties, the structure of 1 at. % Pd/CeO2 catalyst material has been investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy. The diffraction lines corresponding to Pd or PdO are not observed in the high-resolution XRD pattern of 1 at. % Pd/CeO2. The structure of 1 at. % Pd/CeO2 could be refined for the composition of Ce0.99Pd0.01O1.90 in the fluorite structure with 5% oxide ion vacancy. Pd(3d) peaks in the XPS in I at. % Pd/CeO2 are shifted by 3 eV indicating that Pd is in a highly ionic +2 state. EXAFS studies show the average coordination number of 3 around Pd2+ ion in the first shell of 1 at. % Pd/CeO2 at a distance of 2.02 Angstrom, instead of 4 as in PdO. The second shell at 2.72 Angstrom is due to Pd-Pd correlation which is larger than 2.69 Angstrom in PdO. The third shell at 3.31 Angstrom having 7 coordination is absent either in Pd metal or PdO, which can be attributed to -Pd2+-Ce4+- correlation. Thus, 1 at. % Pd/CeO2 forms the Ce1-xPdxO2-delta type of solid solution having -Pd2+-O-2-Ce4+- kinds of linkages.

An isothermal section of the phase diagram for the system Eu - Pd - O at 1223 K has been established by equilibration of samples representing 20 different compositions, and phase identification after quenching by optical and scanning electron microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, and energy dispersive spectroscopy. Three ternary oxides, Eu4PdO7, Eu2PdO4, and Eu2Pd2O5, were identified. Liquid alloys and the intermetallic compounds EuPd2 and EuPd3 were found to be in equilibrium with EuO. The compound EuPd3 was also found to coexist separately with Eu3O4 and Eu2O3. The oxide phase in equilibrium with EuPd5 and Pd rich solid solution was Eu2O3. Based on the phase relations, four solid state cells were designed to measure the Gibbs energies of formation of the three ternary oxides in the temperature range from 925 to 1350 K. Although three cells are sufficient to obtain the properties of the three compounds, the fourth cell was deployed to crosscheck the data. An advanced version of the solid state cell incorporating a buffer electrode with yttria stabilised zirconia solid electrolyte and pure oxygen gas at a pressure of 0.1 MPa as the reference electrode was used for high temperature thermodynamic measurements. Equations for the standard Gibbs energy of formation of the interoxide compounds from their component binary oxides Eu2O3 with C type structure and PdO have been established. Based on the thermodynamic information, isothermal chemical potential diagrams and isobaric phase diagrams for the system Eu - Pd - O have been developed.

We report an extended x-ray absorption fine-structure investigation on the Mn K absorption edge in La1-xCaxMnO3 as a function of temperature and magnetic field. The results provide microscopic evidence that the modifications in the local structure around Mn atomic sites, as a function of temperature and applied magnetic field, are directly related to the magneto-transport properties of these materials.

The diphosphazane ligands of the type, (C20H12O2)PN(R)P(E)Y2 (R = CHMe2 or (S)-*CHMePh; E = lone pair or S; Y2 = O2C20H12 or Y = OC6H5 or OC6H4Me-4 or OC6H4OMe-4 or OC6H4But-4 or C6H5) bearing axially chiral 1,1'-binaphthyl-2,2′-dioxy moiety have been synthesised. The structure and absolute configuration of a diastereomeric palladium complex, [PdCl2{ηsu2}-((O2C20H12)PN((S)-*CHMePh)PPh2] has been determined by X-ray crystallography. The reactions of [CpRu(PPh3)2Cl] with various symmetrical and unsymmetrical diphosphazanes of the type, X2PN(R)PYY′ (R = CHMe2 or (S)-*CHMePh; X = C6H5 or X2 = O2C20H12; Y=Y′= C6H5 or Y = C6H5, Y′ = OC6H4Me-4 or OC6H3Me2-3,5 or N2C3HMe2-3,5) yield several diastereomeric neutral or cationic half-sandwich ruthenium complexes which contain a stereogenic metal center. In one case, the absolute configuration of a trichiral ruthenium complex, viz. [Cp*Ruη2-Ph2PN((S)-*CHMePh)*PPh (N2C3HMe2-3,5)Cl] is established by X-ray diffraction. The reactions of Ru3(CO)12 with the diphosphazanes (C20H12O2)PN(R)PY2 (R = CHMe2orMe; Y2=O2C20H12or Y= OC6H5 or OC6H4Me-4 or OC6H4OMe-4 or OC6H4But-4 or C6H5) yield the triruthenium clusters [Ru3(CO)10{η-(O2C20H12)PN(R)PY2}], in which the diphosphazane ligand bridges two metal centres. Palladium allyl chemistry of some of these chiral ligands has been investigated. The structures of isomeric η3-allyl palladium complexes, [Pd(η3-l,3-R′2-C3H3){η2-(rac)-(02C20H12)PN(CHMe2)PY2}](PF6) (R′ = Me or Ph; Y = C6H5 or OC6H5) have been elucidated by high field two-dimensional NMR spectroscopic and X-ray crystallographic studies.
