Sexual selection is a crucial element to understand behavioral evolution. Teleost fish have been considered as good models for research on sexual selection in the last decades due to their variety of sexual behavior. Female fish can choose males based on body and behavioral traits, such as body size, body color, ornaments, territorial quality, nest size and courtship behavior. Choices are based upon several types of sensorial inputs, such as visual, chemical, sonorous and electrical signals. Intrasexual selection also acts on females because they can mate with a dominant individual in male-male competitions. For both approaches, there is an expectation regarding the benefits of sexual selection by means of female choice. However, in several cases females do not choose the dominant male. In this mini-review, we present and discuss both intersexual and intrasexual mechanisms of sexual selection in fish and point out that females do not always choose a male for mating.

Barium zirconium titanate (BZT) ceramics were prepared by mixed oxide method. X-ray diffraction showed the presence of a single phase while Raman scattering confirmed structural transitions as a function of different Zr/Ti ratio. The addition of Zr strongly influenced the crystal structure and electrical properties of the ceramics. A typical hysteresis loops were observed for all investigated compositions. BZT ceramics with 15 mol% Zr have shown a ferroelectric to paraelectric transition at around 77 degrees C. (C) 2007 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Ceramic samples of SrBi2(Nb1-xTax)O-9 (0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 1) were prepared by the solid state reaction method in order to investigate their structural and electrical features as well as obtain useful information to improve the properties of SrBi2(Nb1-xTax)O-9 as a thin film. The X-ray diffraction patterns and the scanning electronic microscopy photomicrographs show no secondary phases but the formation of a solid-state solution for all the composition. The ac conductivity of the samples, measured at 25 degreesC and 100 kHz frequency, decreases with the increase of Ta content. Such results were explained by intrinsic conductivity of pure components.

A preparation method for a new electrode material based on the LiNi0.8Co0.2O2/polyaniline (PANI) composite is reported. This material is prepared by in situ polymerization of aniline in the presence of LiNi0.8Co0.2O2 assisted by ultrasonic irradiation. The materials are characterized by XRD, TG-DTA, FTIR, XPS, SEM-EDX, AFM, nitrogen adsorption (BET surface area) and electrical conductivity measurements. PANI in the emeraldine salt form interacts with metal-oxide particles to assure good connectivity. The dc electrical conductivity measurements at room temperature indicate that conductivity values are one order of magnitude higher in the composite than in the oxide alone. This behavior determines better reversibility for Li-insertion in charge-discharge cycles compared to the pristine mixed oxide when used as electrode of lithium batteries. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Two series of lead zirconate titanate (PZT) ceramics with composition Zr/Ti approximate to 53/47 have been prepared by the organic solution route. The effects on the electrical properties of calcination temperature in one series and of sintering time period in the other were examined. Dielectric constant, electrical conductivity and impedance spectroscopy results differed from one series to the other, probably due to differences in structure of the precursor powders, as seen by X-ray diffraction. Tetragonal and rhombohedral phases predominate in the powders used, respectively, in the calcined and sintered series. Physical and electrical behavior of ceramics prepared from predominantly rhombohedral powder suggests the evaporation of PbO. The presence of two semi-circles in impedance plots leads to the association of the low frequency semi-circle to the presence of PbO, which, apparently, was not eliminated from ceramics prepared from predominantly tetragonal powder. SnO2 varistors doped with CoO, Cr2O3 and Nb2O5 were prepared by evaporation and decomposition of suspensions. The composition of the varistors was optimized to improve electrical properties, such as nonlinearity, leakage current and electrical stability. The best results were achieved with the following composition: 99.15% SnO2 +0.75% CoO+0.05% Cr2O3 +0.05% Nb2O5. Samples showed high density, reaching 99.5% of the theoretical density, as well as an homogeneous microstructure. The nonlinear coefficient was higher than 30 in the current range from 10(-7) to 10(-2) A/cm(2). The leakage current was 0.86 mu A/cm(2). These samples showed high stability of electrical parameters when they were exposed to high current of 27 mA/cm(2) for different time periods up to 30 min. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. Electrically conductive LaNiO3-delta (LNO) thin films with typical thickness of 200 nm were deposited on Si (111) substrates by a chemical solution deposition method and heat-treated in air at 700 degreesC. Structural, morphological, and electrical properties of the LNO thin films were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FEG-SEM), and electrical resistivity rho(T). The thin films have a very flat surface and no droplet was found on their surfaces. The average grain size observed by AFM and FEG-SEM was approximately 100 nm in excellent agreement with XRD data. The rho(T) data showed that these thin films display a good metallic character in a large range of temperature. These results suggest the use of this conductive layer as electrode in the integration of microelectronic devices. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The effect of Ta2O5 doping in 0.99SnO(2). 0.01CoO on the microstructure and electrical properties of this ceramic were analyzed in this study. The grain size was found to decrease from 6.87 mu m to 5.68 mu m when the Ta2O5 concentration increased from 0.050 to 0.075 mol%. DC electrical characterization showed a dramatic increase in the current loss and decrease in the non-linear coefficient with the increase of the Ta2O5 concentration. The conduction mechanism is by thermionic emission and the potential barriers are of Schottky type, separated by a thin film. (C) 2000 Kluwer Academic Publishers.

The effect of Fe2O3 addition on the densification and electrical properties of the (0.9895 - x) SnO2 + 0.01CoO + 0.005Nb(2)O(5) + xFe(2)O(3) system, where x = 0.005 or 0.01, was considered in this study. The samples were sintered at 1300degreesC for 2 h. Microstructure analysis by scanning electron microscopy showed that the effect of Fe2O3 addition is to decrease the SnO2 grain size. J x E curves indicated that the system exhibit a varistor behavior and the effect of Fe2O3 is to increase both, the non-linear coefficient (alpha) and the breakdown voltage (E-r). Considering the Schottky thermionic emission model the potential height and width were estimated. Small amount addition of Fe2O3 to the basic system increases both the potential barrier height and width. (C) 2002 Kluwer Academic Publishers.

Zirconia-ceria powders with 12 mol % of CeO2 doped with 0.3 mol% of iron, copper, manganese and nickel oxides were synthesized by the conventional mixed oxide method. These systems were investigated with regard to the sinterability and electrical properties. Sintering was studied considering the shrinkage rate, densification, grain size, and phase evolution. Small amount of dopant such as iron reduces sintering temperature by over 150degreesC and more than 98% of tetragonal phase was retained at room temperature in samples sintered at 1450degreesC against 1600degreesC to stabilize the tetragonal phase on pure ZrO2-CeO2 system. The electrical conductivity was measured using impedance spectroscopy and the results were reported. The activation energy values calculated from the Arrhenius's plots in the temperature range of 350-700degreesC for intragrain conductivities are 1.04 eV.

Composites of natural rubber and carbon black have attracted great interest due to their technological applications. In this work natural rubber (NR) and carbon black (CB) were compounded, aiming the development of composites with good mechanical properties, processability and electrical conductivity for use as pressure sensors. The electrical conductivity changes from 10(-11) to 10(-2) S.cm(-1) depending on the percentage of CB in the composite. It was also observed that the conductivity varies reversibly and linearly with the applied pressure. The latter demonstrates that this material can be used as pressure sensors.
