Sediments in Arctic sea ice are important for erosion and redistribution and consequently a factor for the sediment budget of the Arctic Ocean. The processes leading to the incorporation of sediments into the ice are not understood in detail yet. In the present study, experiments on the incorporation of sediments were therefore conducted in ice tanks of The Hamburg Ship Model Basin (HSVA) in winter 1996/1997, These experiments showed that on average 75 % of the artificial sea-ice sediments were located in the brine-channel system. The sediments were scavenged from the water column by frazil ice. Sediments functioning as a nucleus for the formation of frazil ice were less important for the incorporation. Filtration in grease ice during relatively calm hydrodynamic conditions was probably an effective process to enrich sediments in the ice. Wave fields did not play an important role for the incorporation of sediments into the artificial sea ice. During the expedition TRANSDRIFT III (TDIII, October 1995), different types of natural, newly-formed sea ice (grease ice, nilas and young ice) were sampled in the inner Laptev Sea at the time of freeze-up. The incorporation of sediments took place during calm meteorological conditions then. The characteristics of the clay mineral assemblages of these sedirnents served as references for sea-ice sediments which were sampled from first-year drift ice in the outer Laptev Sea and the adjacent Arctic Ocean during the POLARSTERN expedition ARK-XI/1 (July-September 1995). Based on the clay mineral assemblages, probable incorporation areas for the sedirnents in first-year drift ice could be statistically reconstructed in the inner Laptev Sea (eastern, central, and Western Laptev Sea) as well as in adjacent regions. Comparing the amounts of particulate organic carbon (POC) in sea-ice sediments and in surface sediments from the shelves of potential incorporation areas often reveals higher values in sea-ice sediments (TDIII: 3.6 %DM; ARK-XI/1: 2.3 %DM). This enrichment of POC is probably due to the incorporation process into the sea ice, as could be deducted from maceral analysis and Rock-Eval pyrolysis. Both methods were applied in the present study to particulate organic material (POM) from sea-ice sediments for the first time. It was shown that the POM of the sea-ice sediments from the Laptev Sea and the adjacent Arctic Ocean was dominated by reworked, strongly fragmented, allochthonous (terrigenous) material. This terrigenous component accounted for more than 75 % of all counted macerals. The autochthonous (marine) component was also strongly fragmented, and higher in the sediments from newly-formed sea ice (24 % of all counted macerals) as compared to first-year drift ice (17 % of all counted macerals). Average hydroge indices confirmed this pattern and were in the transition zone between kerogen types II and III (TDIII: 275 mg KW/g POC; ARK-XI/1: 200 mg KW/g POC). The sediment loads quantified in natural sea ice (TDIII: 33.6 mg/l, ARK-XI/1: 49.0 mg/l) indicated that sea-ice sediments are an important factor for the sediment budget in the Laptev Sea. In particular during the incorporation phase in autumn and early winter, about 12 % of the sediment load imported annually by rivers into the Laptev Sea can be incorporated into sea ice and redistributed during calm meteorological conditions. Single entrainment events can incorporate about 35 % of the river input into the sea ice (ca. 9 x 10**6 t) and export it via the Transpolar Drift from the Eurasian shelf to the Fram Strait.

We here present a compilation of planktic and benthic 14C reservoir ages for the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and early deglacial from 11 key sites of global ocean circulation in the Atlantic and Indo-Pacific Ocean. The ages were obtained by 14C plateau tuning, a robust technique to derive both an absolute chronology for marine sediment records and a high-resolution record of changing reservoir/ventilation ages (Delta14C values) for surface and deep waters by comparing the suite of planktic 14C plateaus of a sediment record with that of the atmospheric 14C record (Sarnthein et al., 2007, doi:10.1029/173GM13). Results published thus far used as atmospheric 14C reference U/Th-dated corals, the Cariaco planktic record, and speleothems (Fairbanks et al., 2005, doi:10.1016/j.quascirev.2005.04.007; Hughen et al., 2006, doi:10.1016/j.quascirev.2006.03.014; Beck et al., 2001, doi:10.1023/A:1008175728826). We have now used the varve-counted atmospheric 14C record of Lake Suigetsu terrestrial macrofossils (Ramsey et al., 2012, doi:10.1126/science.1226660) to recalibrate the boundary ages and reservoir ages of the seven published records directly to an atmospheric 14C record. In addition, the results for four new cores and further planktic results for four published records are given. Main conclusions from the new compilation are: (1) The Suigetsu atmospheric 14C record on its varve counted time scale reflects all 14C plateaus, their internal structures and relative length previously identified, but implies a rise in the average 14C plateau age by 200-700 14C yr during LGM and early deglacial times. (2) Based on different 14C ages of coeval atmospheric and planktic 14C plateaus, marine surface water Delta14C may have temporarily dropped to an equivalent of ~0 yr in low-latitude lagoon waters, but reached >2500 14C yr both in stratified subpolar waters and in upwelled waters such as in the South China Sea. These values differ significantly from a widely assumed constant global planktic Delta14C value of 400 yr. (3) Suites of deglacial planktic Delta14C values are closely reproducible in 14C records measured at neighboring core sites. (4) Apparent deep-water 14C ventilation ages (equivalents of benthic Delta14C), deduced from the sum of planktic Delta14C and coeval benthic-planktic 14C differences, vary from 500 up to >5000 yr in LGM and deglacial ocean basins.

General global cooling over the Neogene has been modulated by changes in Earth's orbital parameters. Investigations of deep-sea sediment sequences show that various orbital cycles can dominate climate records for different latitudes or for different time intervals. However, a comprehensive understanding of astronomical imprints over the entire Neogene has been elusive because of the general absence of long, continuous records extending beyond the Pliocene. We present benthic foraminiferal d18O and d13C records over the past 23 Ma at Ocean Drilling Program Site 1148 in the northern South China Sea and construct an astronomically tuned timescale (TJ08) for these records based on natural gamma radiation and color reflectance data at this site. Our results show that a 41 ka cycle has dominated sediment records at this location over the Neogene, displaying a linear response to orbital forcing. A 100 ka cycle has also been significant. However, it is correlated nonlinearly with Earth's orbital variations at the 100 ka band. The sediment records also display a prominent 405 ka cycle. Although this cycle was coherent with orbital forcing during the Oligocene and the early Miocene, it was not coherent with Earth's orbital variations at the 405 ka band over the whole Neogene. Amplification of Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere glaciation since the middle Miocene may be responsible for this change in sedimentary response. Our benthic foraminifera d18O and d13C records further exhibit amplitude variations with longer periods of 600, 1000, 1200, and 2400 ka. Apparently, these cycles are nonlinear responses to insolation forcing.

During most of the vegetation season from late May to early September large-sized diatom alga Proboscia alata forms local patches with high abundances and biomasses in different oceanographic domains of the eastern Bering Sea shelf. For 0-25 m layer average abundance and biomass of species in these patches are 700000 cells/l and 5 g/m**3 (wet weight), while corresponding estimates for the layer of maximal species concentrations are 40000000 cells/l and 38 g/m**3 (wet weight) or 1.6 g C/m**3. These levels of abundance and biomass are typical for the spring diatom bloom in the region. Outbursts of P. alata mass development are important for the carbon cycle in the pelagic zone of the shelf area in the summer season. The paradox of P. alata summertime blooms over the middle shelf lies in their occurrences against the background of the sharp seasonal pycnocline and deficiency in nutrients in the upper mixed layer. Duration of the outbursts in P. alata development is about two weeks and size of patches with high abundances can be as large as 200 km across. Degradation of the P. alata summertime outbursts may occur during 4-5 days. Rapid sinking of cells through the seasonal pycnocline results in intense transport of organic matter to bottom sediments. One of possible factors responsible for rapid degradation of the blooms is affect on the population by ectoparasitic flagellates. At terminal stages of the P. alata blooms percentage of infected cells can reach 70-99%.

The paper presents data on authigenic carbonate distribution in Holocene - Upper Pleistocene deposits of the Okhotsk, Japan, East China, Philippine and South China Seas. Description of carbonate samples, their chemical and isotope compositions are given. Chemical analysis of the samples indicates that almost all authigenic carbonates are composed of calcite or magnesian calcite; and only in one case, of siderite. Oxygen isotopic composition (d18O) ranges from +37.7 to +26.1 per mil (SMOW); it is, probably, connected with different temperatures of carbonate formation. A distinct geographic regularity is traced. Decrease in d18O values is observed from the cold Okhotsk Sea to the warm South China Sea. A very wide range of carbon isotopic composition (d13C from -42 to +3.8 per mil) indicates different sources of carbonic acid required for formation of these carbonates. As a basis for carbon isotopic composition we can distinguish three sources of carbonic acid in the studied sediments: microbiological methane oxidation, organic matter destruction during sediment diagenesis, and dissolved organogenic limestone. Thus, formation of authigenic carbonates in sediments from the marginal seas of the Northwest Pacific results from: 1) sediment diagenesis, 2) methane oxidation in zones of gas anomalies, 3) their precipitation from the supersaturated by carbonates sea shoal waters of tropical sea lagoons.

General characteristics of macrobenthos of muddy sediments of the subtidal (19-24 m) zone in the Nha Trang Bay (South Vietnam) were described based on the survey performed in April-May 2002. The mean abundance of organisms was 637 ind/m**2 and the mean biomass was 2.3 g/m**2. Sixty-seven macrobenthic species were found during the study. The main structural features of the macrobenthos were high species diversity, low species recurrence, and high evenness of species structure with the absence of clearly manifested dominants. The number of species encountered regularly increased with the increase in the total area sampled from 210 to 5000 cm**2, though the relation did not reach saturation. Similarities and differences between the macrobenthos structures in the Nha Trang Bay and those in some tropical and boreal soft-bottom communities are discussed.
